Jonathans recoil comment about tarkov is correct. It has pretty much been confirmed that the way recoil has been modelled in tarkov is as if you were holding a pistol. This wasn't all that noticeable when the recoil was relatively low (and imo more realistic) in the past but as an easy balancing solution developers have slowly increased recoil over the years to combat 0 recoil laser meta builds. This in turn caused stock and lightly modified guns to have this over the top recoil with almost unusable ironsights. Luckily a recoil rework was promised in the roadmap this year so hopefully this will be fixed.
Should've done the scene from MGS4 where Snake gets the M4 and checks its functioning (I'd also love to see an MGS3 episode, particularly Snake's extensive breakdown of his M1911 (and also Ocelot's weird detachable revolver stock thing)).
it's funny Jonathan should say that the tarkov M4 feels like it's pivoting off the wrist. Because due to a flaw in the way recoil works in the game that's exactly what's happening.
Absolutely insane that Jonathan saw that PD2's M16 was a little too thick and then took that to theorize that it might be based on an airsoft replica. Man is the real deal
Something to point out, Fallout does not take place in an alternate 1950s, it takes place in an alternate 2200-2300s post apocalyptic world, where the apocalypse happened in 2077. The 1950s stylings is because various modern, efficient technology, such as the micro chip and transistor, never got invented, which meant 1950s styled stuff never stopped being in style. The wood furniture on the service rifle is, apparently, because the Service rifle is a post apocalypse built rifle built for the NCR, and polymer is near impossible to come by in the wasteland, and is not to be wasted on trivial stuff like handguards. That's how I understand it anyway.
The CS:GO M4A1-S is clearly using a C7 style upper, which were developed for the Canadian military's C7 rifle. Those were common before the M4 adoption and were never part of the M4 series except in very early models. Black Hawk Down era forces used rifles with C7 uppers. The correct Colt catalog number for what they would call the M4A1-S is the Colt 723.
Let me suggest ArmA 3: SOG Prairie Fire again! ASide from the unique SOG weapons, there's a certain Australian SASR modded L1A1 I'd really like to see Jonathan talking about...
@@North_Dumpling Rising Storm 2 is great. Prairie Fire has a niche in Vietnam-era special forces and unique toys rarely seen outside of it. For Australia, It has both of those, the Owen and the F1, but also the integrally suppressed L34A1, including one with an XM148 GL (also in L1A1s), and especially the one I mentioned above... the infamous SASR full auto shorty L1A1, with a very special nickname.
Technically it falls into what Jonathan called "boutique gucci thing" since the pricepoint of an ADAR 2-15 was ₽126k, which at the time was around $2k (the conversion now would be more like $1200).
I was hoping he'd mention the Dutch made AR-10's (I know not AR-15 but still) because those were manufactured with the intent of military service with wooden furniture.

Perfect Dark on the N64 does in fact reference to Goldeneye (James Bond) N64 game. By having the said weapon in the game (which you have to complete challenges at the HQ).

As an FMF Corpsman, I carried an M4 in Iraq. I loved that little rifle! Lightweight, handy, & accurate. If I ever have to face combat again, I wouldn't want any other rifle.
IIRC in the Rising Storm 2 multiplayer campaign the US/ARVN side starts with m14s, and as it progresses you get M16s, with officers and some other classes getting XM16E1s before late game gives proper M16A1s
Having played A LOT of destiny 2, it very much does differ from the real life gun but i think it's because there's a standard reload animation for auto rifles (that class of weapon in the game) and that reload doesn't follow the irl way that gun would be cocked. Some guns have unique reload animations (mostly exotics) but since the khvostov is The Starter Gun (literally the first one you get) they didn't give it unique animations. It's coming back with an exotic version soon so maybe they'll fix it there which would be cool, who knows.
The AR-16 suffers from a bit of that late 2000's 'greeble' designs and left-hand-eject which opted for style over realism. However there are a few real world parts we can identify from it: The Taiwan production M16 (T91) has a similar foreend design, but the front sight looks like something one would see on a Sig550. It has a Milkor MGL red dot sight, a carry handle borrowed from a FN Minimi (M249) (the Colt LMG variant had a carry handle but not in that style), and lastly the receiver resembles the Rock River Arms EOP (Elevated Optics Platform).
I don't know if you guys can edit already uploaded videos, but the Payday 2 segment doesn't show the AMR-16 (which is based on the M16A1, IIRC). Instead it shows the AMCAR rifle (which, as Jonathan pointed out, is indeed based on the Colt Model 733).
This is a Longshot, but I'd like to see Johnathan look at the guns from Homefront 2. So, you can turn your starting pistol into an smg, and back again. I'm wondering if there are any real world parallels to that.
Please Jonathan, break down the weapons from *METAL GEAR SOLID 3* before the remake comes out. There are so many more other interesting trivias and weapons in MGS3 so please gamespot and Johnathan make a video for the game.
You mentioned it on the Payday 2 rifle about battery operated arisoft M16/AR15, but if you look at the CS:GO M4A4 you can clearly see that it's modeled after an airsoft rifle. Look at the buttstock and you can clearly see where the batteries were supposed to go inside it.

Random memory based on the XM16E1 mention around 15:00. In the early 2000s I was doing Army training and somebody I knew was issued a rifle with a lower marked "XM16E1" that had been crossed out and "M16A2" stamped next to it. The rifle was still being used with live ammunition for target shooting.
Would love to see Jonathan do Ghosts of Tabor’s weapons. They are modeled impeccably from what I can tell and entirely by veterans. The mechanics are also insane.

Glad to see Black finally get some love here. That game was awesome when it came out on the Xbox/PS2 back in the day. The only thing it lacked was multiplayer. One thing that gets me though is that you didn't point out that on every single one of the iron sights, the night/NBC large aperture is being used and not the narrow day aperture it should be on the narrow one for almost all usage, and only flipped to the large aperture for night time or when firing with your Pro-mask on.
Heck ya! More BLACK please. Now more eager to see Mr. Ferguson talk about it since he never got to play the masterpiece that it is back in the day. Good times.
You Guy's should get him to check out: Killzone Series for helical mags and bullpups The Order 1886 for Steampunk guns and old lesser known guns From this video definitely he should look at Black
Destiny 2 is kinda infamous for guns that just cannot work without shrugging and going "Space magic" I'd love to see Jonathan react to the Conspirator scout rifle.
I have to say, much as I loved this whole video, I spent about five minutes on the first CS:GO entry pausing it to compare the S10 gas mask the operator is wearing to the one on my wall. Pretty accurate, overall I was impressed - the embossed '2' (denoting the mask size) is on the wrong cheek, and a tad higher than on mine, but I can't discount the possibility that this was altered throughout the production run, as mine is from 1991. The other details all look pretty solid, including the presence of the 'ridge' running around the entire facepiece in front of the straps, which isn't present on the FM12, the S10's successor. I realize that quite possibly no one else in this comments section cares in the slightest, but I thought I'd note my observations regardless.
I'm probably wrong, but I think the reason why the magazines aren't fully loaded in RS2:V has to do with a fear the magazine might fall out on its own. I've heard of stories of this happening to GIs with Thompson M1A1s, so they would load 27 or 28 rounds in the stick, and I know Bren gunners typically loaded their top-mounted magazines with the same amount of ammunition. It's probably just a fear that the magazine would come loose in a firefight. Those 20-round STANAGs are pretty reliable, but the early 30 round magazines had issues. The other factor to take into account probably is the magazine spring. I can't say for sure, and it's probably a game design choice that the developer went with to balance the weapons out.
can Jonathan explain what the legalities are for using guns in games? Is it a general copyright issue? Licensing? Do movies have to deal with that, or because they bought/rented a model, it doesn't matter? Though, maybe this is a lawyer question no? I would love to know though!
I think he mentions things here and there. Something like the HK firearms generally have licensing issues, but an M4 for example is not licensed because it's not the name of the gun, it's a designation given to what is actually called the AR-15
From what I've seen and heard its a little messy and kind of depends on manufacturer (some are more litigious than others or demand higher licensing prices) and whether the actual firearm name is used vs. just a military designation. Like you'll probably never see a "Glock 19" in a big game, but there'd be no issue with a "Mk27" or a "L131A1" (the Seal and British designation for their specs of it). And you never just see "AR-15"s but M4s and M16s are in pretty much every military shooter. I also think in the late 90s and early 2000s a lot of developers weren't actually sure how things would work themselves and were just pre-emptively covering their asses, see: the firearm names in pretty much every Bond game.
This is something Dave and I are still slowly researching. There are certainly legal concerns around tradenames and likenesses - something called "trade dress". However there is no real test case on the latter and most devs don't worry about it. I am convinced that most "legally different" guns in games are just artistic licence but Activision MAY be changing designs by X percent out of sheer paranoia. Not sure!
For future breakdowns like this, the year of release should be included in the card for each episode given how much JF mentions the age of the game within his breakdowns. For a part 2 of the same subject, I'd like to see SWAT4 and Homefront 2 included, since have officially licensed (!) examples. 55th week asking for Bullet Girls Phantasia episode, 31st week of asking for loadout on games (not) keeping track of round in chamber.
Id like to see this for the scar platform of rifles (H and L). Games to get footage from may include: Escape from tarkov (has both) Mw2 (og) for H mw3 (og) for L Operation flashpoint dragons rising (has both) Insurgency sandstorm (for H). Love you guys vids ❤❤
I would like to point out the fact that the CS:GO M4A1-S is for some reason modeled after a Colt Model 723, so him saying the proportions are all off is correct!
I love how the AMR-16 stock puzzled Jonathan, maybe because he does not know much about nerf guns while im a gun and nerf nerd... So it seemed very familiar as I have had my hands on a gel m4 many times, and that stock attachment looks exactly like it. So pulling the latch down disconnects the stock and reveals a n-strike attachment point. Unlikely/impossible that the seam is for folding as the folding mech would be different. I suspect the designers just took some toy m4 and drew it on while making it look a bit less like a toy. Entertaining to see Jonathan be confused
It would be cool to see an overlay of the real thing overtop/next to the various game models to really highlight the detailed differences in parts and scale etc.
I mean I remember hearing now I don't know if it's 100% true but I wouldn't put it past them, US Ordinance department didn't like the M16s as they had their M14s which lets be honest, was what the M1 was supposed to be but wasn't in WW2. But they apparently sabotaged guns, didn't supply cleaning kits and supplied ball ammo and not the FMJ they were supposed to use, hence lots of mechanical failures happened in Vietnam, once it was cleared up the M16s ran fine and well and the M14 was effectively dropped as the standard rifle, has been used in more niche rolls but it was effectively forgotten about in the end.
Even as an avid airsofter, Jonathan just taught me something new. I double-checked it for myself and I'm shook. On the topic of obscure AR's, I'd love to see a reaction to APB Reloaded's guns.
If you compare the pistol grip on an AEG M4 with a GBBR M4 you can feel the difference really easily! GBBR ones are true to size because they have similar working parts.
@@Lozart I unfortunately don't have either of those (I'm more of a bullpup guy, gives some variety on the field in the middle of all those AR15) but I'll check it out if I see someone with a GBBR on the field one day
While I know y’all have to/will do a video like this on the AK family and maybe the Garand, I’d love to see one going over video game M14s, Mini-14s, and Mk14 EBRs, as well as any other M14 derivatives
13:50 I know in my use case I down load my duty Pmags a couple rounds because I cant store them with the dust covers on them. The dust cover pushes the rounds down which alleviates the pressure on the feed lips, keeping stored fully loaded without the covers on can cause stress cracks on the lips.

The fact that he didn't even touch on the fixed right side charging handle used in Fallout New Vegas for all the AR-15 variants has ruined my night.
The “AR 16” is closer in resemblance to an AR 180 without the side charging or piston system.
"M4A1-S" from CS is XM177. Little stock, A2 style upper and thin handguard. Also XM177 muzzle device if memory serves
I'm glad they covered Rising Storm. Tripwire/Antimatter modelled weapons have always been decent
Heck ya! More BLACK please. Now more eager to see Mr. Ferguson talk about it since he never got to play the masterpiece that it is back in the day. Good times.
6:21 surprised there was no mention of the selector switch being in the wrong position.
23:30 i believe thats been modelled of an Airsoft rifle. as the bit attached to the buffer tube is a sling mount for QD sling points
You Guy's should get him to check out:
Killzone Series for helical mags and bullpups
The Order 1886 for Steampunk guns and old lesser known guns
From this video definitely he should look at Black
Cool content idea, love it
would have loved Squad or Arma in here
This is excellent! please do one on the Mp5
Destiny 2 is kinda infamous for guns that just cannot work without shrugging and going "Space magic" I'd love to see Jonathan react to the Conspirator scout rifle.
Killzone please 🥺 i promise my first born to the royal armour museum
That M16A2E1 is so fricking cool!
7:15 Oh my god, they made the charging handle reciprocating.
I would like to point out the fact that the CS:GO M4A1-S is for some reason modeled after a Colt Model 723, so him saying the proportions are all off is correct!
When did we get the new camera? The focusing was pretty on point
2:09 come on Jonathan, it has feelings you know?
I love how the AMR-16 stock puzzled Jonathan, maybe because he does not know much about nerf guns while im a gun and nerf nerd... So it seemed very familiar as I have had my hands on a gel m4 many times, and that stock attachment looks exactly like it. So pulling the latch down disconnects the stock and reveals a n-strike attachment point. Unlikely/impossible that the seam is for folding as the folding mech would be different. I suspect the designers just took some toy m4 and drew it on while making it look a bit less like a toy. Entertaining to see Jonathan be confused
Great video
a lot of guns are mirrored in games to make shells eject or have the reload action on the visual side, since most people are right-handers.
My stock don't telescope, it folds...
Jonathan Ferguson Jiggle Jiggle cover when?
Johnathan breaking down the guns from the Ghost Recon games would be great.
Love the Ghost t-shirt!
I did not know I needed Jonathan saying "this sucker right here" in my life. But, it turns out I did. Very much so.
I carried a M16A1M203 during my military service, and l loved it..
Do more episodes like this (:
Think my biggest gripe with the FO-NV M16 wannabe isn't the wood furniture but the weird dust cover they had
Even as an avid airsofter, Jonathan just taught me something new. I double-checked it for myself and I'm shook. On the topic of obscure AR's, I'd love to see a reaction to APB Reloaded's guns.
Didn't know it either, but it doesn't surprise me all that much, gearboxes can be pretty chonky
If you compare the pistol grip on an AEG M4 with a GBBR M4 you can feel the difference really easily! GBBR ones are true to size because they have similar working parts.
@@Lozart I unfortunately don't have either of those (I'm more of a bullpup guy, gives some variety on the field in the middle of all those AR15) but I'll check it out if I see someone with a GBBR on the field one day
Ayo? Jonathan Ferguson, weapons expert and Keeper of Firearms & Artillery at the Royal Armouries with the Ghost merch?
While I know y’all have to/will do a video like this on the AK family and maybe the Garand, I’d love to see one going over video game M14s, Mini-14s, and Mk14 EBRs, as well as any other M14 derivatives
CS2 already came out so have a look on the new models.
I loved playing Black, but just now noticed that they put the fire selector on the right side and to make matters worse, it's on the "Safe" position.
"there are several people who have lovingly carved, polished and whatever else" 😳😳
And where? Pray tell, is Syphon Filter on the original Playstation?
13:50 I know in my use case I down load my duty Pmags a couple rounds because I cant store them with the dust covers on them. The dust cover pushes the rounds down which alleviates the pressure on the feed lips, keeping stored fully loaded without the covers on can cause stress cracks on the lips.
This wonderful man needs to do an HK platform variants AR.
