I had graduated college in summer '91, and wanted to reward myself with a new hi fi system, a good one. Went to a stereo store, and needed a cd to test them out. Bought Just For A Day on a whim, being a shoegaze fan, and brought to the store. WOW. Perfect choice. Sounded so good, helped me pick out a nice system.

If Blue Day was considered an initially-released or stand-alone album with slowdive’s EPs (which should have been) then I would rank this as their absolute best.

My conscience is haunted for not going full number one with Pygmalion. Hopefully, my passion for that album came through in the video. Thanks for watching and commenting. -Kevin

one last thing, and maybe it's because i'm a graphic designer, but do not like the design of "everything is alive". no one touched on it, but i was a little bummed when it was revealed.

Greg had some great great vinyl to showcase his vinyl wall today! Is that Sonic Youth's Sister in the top left corner? Great episode guys :)

That definitely looked like SY's Sister back there indeed. Thanks for watching, Martin!

Yes, it is indeed "Sister"! And thank you! :) I don't own any Slowdive on vinyl so I thought for this video, I'd decorate my vinyl backdrop with albums from bands who influenced Slowdive (Sonic Youth, Brian Eno, JAMC, Syd Barrett, Cocteau Twins, The Byrds, The Cure, Pink Floyd, The Smiths, Pixies, VU and of course the 12" of the Banshees' "Slowdive" that gave the band their name).

I am a pretty big Slowdive fan from the Just For A Day album in the early 90s I bought the former when released on SBK records (odd label they were on in the U.S.) When I heard Soulvaki, I thought it was masterful record. I was going to university in Salt Lake City, Utah at the the time and the campus library had Melody Maker and NME which I would spend my Sundays reading in-between long study days in the library. Both of those publications trashed Soulvaki and weren't too kind to Just For A Day. Oddly, both praised some of the earlier E.P.s if my memory is correct. Boy where the Dave Simpsons of the world wrong back then. All the band's albums just grow in resonance over the years. Maybe the latest will do the same, Everything is Alive. As a comparison, I didn't love Pygmalion at the time but it quickly grew on me when I gave it chance a decade later. I do like Slowdive's electronic experimentation. I loved the 5 song E.P. and the Reload Mix of "In MInd" available on the remix ep of the 5 song e.p is one of my favorite pieces of music ever recorded. It's like a electronic symphony . Part of that is because of the brilliance of Middleton and Pritchard (see Global Communication, Reload, Jedi Knights,) Lastly, even though I discovered the dutch goth metal band The Gathering late, in the mid 2000s. That band was/still is heavily influenced by Slowdive. This band recorded a cover version of "When The Sun Hits" in 1997. Probably one of the earliest example of post the heyday of shoegaze Slowdive worship by another band I can think of. That worship continues to this day. The guitarist of that band formed a Shoegaze/Dreampop band called Habitants that just dropped a fantastic Slowdive inspired album this past Friday!

There are quite a few black metal/black gaze bands that take a lot of love from Slowdive! Alcest, Ameosoeurs, Lantlos, and the like...always great to hear that Slowdive influence elsewhere!
