As a mechanical engineer with masters in this topic I will say this to whomever planning to modify their cars like this. Yes you will get more power but it comes at a cost. Reliability! We do calculations on fatigue and long term effects of the stresses on the cars. Usually a car is made to run without any major problems for ~8 years. Such modifications might lower this significantly putting more stress in the pistons, the engine block and any part of the engine you can think of. If you are okay with having a car with more in need of replacement parts along your ownership by all means go for it. However, do be aware that this is not a free power bump for your car during your period of ownership. What is free then? A better exhaust, and intake are the ones I can think of.
Believe they go from 18 psi boost to about 24 psi, but that alone won't significantly decrease service life. Overall these engines are holding up very well
You literally just did the internet meme. 5 years of study in the subject and a relevant masters - it’ll reduce reliability. Internet guy: WTF do you know - no change in reliability.
The overhead designed into these engines is to accommodate all trims - so reliability is calculated based on the highest tune map which is 543hp - pushing slightly higher than that is not going to cause much additional wear. Your degree is useless for this evaluation.
@@Anko88888 check the market there's high spec M2s with less than 10,000 miles being sold for £10-25k less than they cost Everyone wants an M3 or M4, M2 is the ugly bastard child that isn't very popular
What I find impressive in this video is that the m240i has been measured 534 NM of torque stock, and the M2 here measured 540 NM stock. Meaning, the m240i stock has as much torque as the M2. That is what you feel when driving. Insane.
Even the plugin type tuning options are detectable via the BMW software, things like turbo pressure, turbo shaft speed and ignition timing are recorded within the ecu, so maybe undetectable from a physical perspective, but definitely not from a software perspective 😉, only a concern if you're wanting to retain the factory warranty. Great results though
Yeah I wanted to say this too. You're right. Also just installing the piggyback and sending it is usually a bad idea. Wether it's a custom tune, OTS tune, or piggyback, they should datalog the car in order to see if everything is ok (boostprofile, ignition timing, AFR's, etc etc). A dyno graph says almost nothing at all wether the tune for the car is healthy..
That is not true. The way a piggyback tune works is it intercepts the boost pressure from the sensor PRIOR to it being sent to the ECU. So it goes boost sensor to piggyback box then from piggyback box to ECU. As far as your car ECU is concerned it thinks it’s running stock boost. For example if the piggyback is trying to run +4 psi it will tell the ECU that the boost pressure is at 12 instead of 16 which in turn the ECU allows the turbos to generate more boost. This is how a piggyback tricks the ECU into calling for more boost. I have also verified this first hand by logging the car. I have a G87 M2 with a RaceChip installed on it and when I hook up to obd and log it’s showing the same 16-17 psi boost that it was prior to installing RaceChip even though it is in reality running 20+. As long as the dealer doesn’t see it in the car and notate its existence you shouldn’t have any issue with warranty work if you remove it and put everything back factory.

Hi Auto ID. Picked the Areeve piggy back tune from the store and had shipped to the states a few weeks back. After install their were some serious lag and hesitation issues. More from incorrect settings, but after support from Areeve and updating the settings the issue did improve. Moving custom sport setting to factory default of P-0. Unfortunately there is still noticeable lag in M modes at take off and as car climbs MPHs and when you ask for power quickly. If you ease into it is much better, but the pronounced flutter is noticeable and annoying. The M2 synthetic dual clutch bump almost fights the HP boosts. It would have been nice if BMW had an option in M modes to turn that off. Still working with Areeve to try and get this correct. The HP gains are enormous and noticeable, but the hesitation and lag compound the issue and despite the extra power I will have to go back to stock if I can't work out the issue.🤔
