- Back at it with Bens Luton Camper Conversion. We got a lot done recently including cutting off the roof and replacing it with a timber construction. We also put rubber on the roof and got the van protected from the rain.

If you drive the van in a rainstorm water will drive up underneath between the cab and possibly get to that door
Great build.
Never seen anyone take off the roof before.... that's my intention when.i get a van.
Nice job...
I think 2 run offs at the front would help if the van wasn't sloping correctly, but if its permanently parked I guess that wont be a problem, interesting idea using the rubber sheet.
Hello! Can you tell us what are the dimensions (an thickness) of the alu profils you used to build the overcab? Thanks a lot!
We are starting our building of a 20m3 luton van, and we also want to build again the roof and an over cab!
This will be a nice 7.5t motorhome.
Looks awesome! Possibly a little late to comment, but you may have issues with weight with the OSB plus rubber sheeting on the roof and all the 75x50(?) roof beams. I think you may end up above the 4-tonne mark when completed. Aluminium sheet might have been a better (lighter) material.
We're going to keep an eye on the weight
and much more durable!
Rubber + sun = disaster in a few years
@@mhannebert That rubber is EPDM which I've used professionally. It's guaranteed for 50 years.
Any idea of the weight mate? I think personally I’d use 8020 ally or ally box frame and composite panels on the exterior , insulation, vp barrier then 6mm ply/preferred covering on the inner 👍🏼
We will publish weight and specs once finished.
@@HughTube when ?
I've just put an EPDM roof on a garden office I built so I was surprised to see you using it for a van. I assume this is NOT a 3.5T van?
Think it is 3.5t
@@HughTube I used 18mm OSB at over 30Kg a sheet - no mean feat getting them on the roof!
Will this be a tiny home that barely moves or a camper?
This is looking like a quality build. Out of interest what are your backgrounds ie trades?
Ben has been doing carpentry and woodwork for most if not all his life and I am just a fond DIYer that has learnt a lot from Ben
@@HughTube the man has skills
Please can i ask why you took off the old roof? What was was with it? Also, why didn't you replace it with fibre glass like the previous roof? Thank you 😊 I'm thinking about Converting a Luton but someone told me that it will 'definitely leak'
They took off the fibreglass roof so they could build a solid roof they can stand on it and use as a rooftop garden. Also no leaks :)
Interesting way to waterproof the roof.
Great job.... but guys, the WEIGHT!!! Especially the front axle! OMG! Take it to a weighbridge before you do anything else 😱
What is the material that the back doors are made of? It sounded like sequoia.?
You're right, it sounded like Sequoia wood but I believe it's usually red in colour, I'd say it's Tricoya
I believe he pronounced it Jaccoya but he means Accoya which is the stuff that lasts for up to 50 years. Google it.
it's tricoya
whats that 50yr magic wood called?
Its called Accoya. Done a few jobs with it myself and really good 👍
@@chrisneville7310 thanks, don't think I ever would have worked out the spelling!
It's Tricoya, I still can't believe it haha 50 years without painting! Doesn't seem possible with a fibre board
Interesting because the sterling ply means roof weighs a ton
Gonna be one heavy girl, but worth it
Your get plenty of rain under the overhang if driving in the rain
Why did you remove the original roof ?
had seen better days and I know fibreglass can be repaired but Ben wanted to replace it
Slightly abrupt ending! But, good job!
haha sorry yes I am forgetting to sign off recently. will try step up my game
I know it's a lot of work, but that front end should be streamlined. 👍
A lot of lutons have a square front and are fine on the road, also Ben won't be doing lots of miles in this van
UFO at 1.51
haha just a cheeky seagull
10:17 😂😂😂
An excellent job guys 😊
great job you two
Amazing build guys
Awesome house on wheels this is going to be👍
Omg this is going to weigh a tonne
More like 5
@DG Enterprises why I used 3 and 5mm ply, corex(estate agent sign plastic) and the skins off interior doors. Be interesting at the mot in the next few weeks to see what it weighs.
we will keep the weight posted at the end
To be fair, it was made pretty clear at the start that this will be a tiny home rather than a tourer.
@DG Enterprises I hear ya, I'm just playing devil's advocate
whats the guys name again? lol
Nice he gave Ben a quick mention, eventually!
Sorry guys, that rubber is installed very poor. You should of used contact adhesive on perimeter and openings at least 8” wide. The water based will fail on edges, and no russ strip on perimeter with mechanical fixings. You left lots of air bubbles and it will gas forming bulges in those areas. Please don’t use upvc trims and poly caps nails. At least finish it off with some aluminium profiles. And make sure you use primer and tape on detailing those windows.
Not sure about the rear only rain water drainage, wouldn't it be good to have a way for rain to escape at the front end too? If you're parked up for a few days or a week and rain water collects in that front end of the luton it could potentially just sit on the seals for the roof hatch and maxxfan, you need to get rid of it not let it sit.
Hey Patrick, I totally see where you’re coming from but what Ben has done is made the access hatch and maxxfan seal edges higher than the roof edges so even in worst case scenario the rain would get over the edge before trying to leach into the van. Does that make sense?
@@HughTube That makes sense, if the seals are higher than the roof edges. It's still an awful lot of water to sit on the roof, stay in one place long enough you'll have Ducks up there! lol.
@@patrickh8602 lmfao
That roof will have added a good 200kg..no thanks
So much attention for scrap vehicle perhaps should first start with engine rebuild : )
It's mechanically sound and had originally before starting a full check through
