LOVE IT!!! i saw very few Katy locomotives growing up...they used to bring coal trains via BN here in illinois....i did see a few on the CNW! great work!
The barb wire fence keeping the cows in check and the substation amongst other settings other shows imagination and amazing attention to detail.. Fantastic job.
My mother grew near Parsons, Kansas, which was the headquarters of the Katy for many years. People in Parsons used to go to the restaurant in the station/HQ, because the food and service was the same as the dining cars on the Katy Flyer, the Bluebonnet, and the Texas Special. I can still picture the station with a red roof and the big M-K-T sign.
Very nice layout and good representation of the Katy. I worked for the Katy offline (Chicago marketing and sales) during the period that you have modeled and I rode the Katy from KC to Dallas as well as worked Dallas Yard with a switch crew in 1983. Your simulation is right on par!
My dad worked on the Katy for 30 years. I remember mom going to the round house to take or pick up dad. This was during the steam engine days. The Katy depot in Denison TX was restored a few years ago. Fond memories if those huge old puffer bellys and riding passenger trains. Reggie Martin RIP

I love the Katy. Grew up in Denison myself and was a teenager at the time of the merger. Your excellent layout captures the essence of that era and Texas landscape. Can't wait to see more updates.
Very nice layout. I'm a big fan of Katy (but red). One thing that's missing is the "roller coaster" topography in central and south Texas. But that would be hard to model in your space. Good luck going forward and be safe. Love your bridges over the Brazos.
Looking good! You're off to a great start. And you've got trains running - the most important part. The rest will come in time. A layout is never done; there's always just a little more, if only you can find the time. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the layout tour and describing your future plans. My old layout was in my garage in Miami, while not ideal it worked. Adding A/C really helps and one thing I did was use a epoxy paint on the floor which cut down on the dust and made the room look more finished. The layout looks really nice and I look forward to following your progress. -Tom
Thank you, Tom. I do have plans to do something with the garage floor....trying to get most of the major work done before I decide how to finish it out....
Impressive work. Don't knock a simple track plan; I like your layout design. It gives a realism with the right amount of track to scenery (nicely balanced). Track side scenes can always be improved by adding blind spots, so the train goes behind other structures and/or tall trees or shrubs on a knoll. Regarding your passing sidings, I think they're great. Very nicely done!
I was going to ask if you were modeling a particular area or specific place, and then you mentioned Waco -- I live in Katy, and remember when the GRR cars used to run along I-10 (the Katy Freeway) into the batch plant at Shepherd Street in Houston during the '80s and '90s, until the line was abandoned and removed. You've done a nice job, keep going.
I am roughly following through north central Texas (Waco area), but no real plans other than to have some named industries from that time period. The Brazos is on there but other than that, will be mostly freelanced. GRR hoppers will definitely be on the layout, service the rock/cement plant.
I love your layout it is very clean and neat well thought-out. I would love to see all your videos on how you made every scenic part of your layout. Great job...
Nice job! Looks great! The garage door is not a big deal to me. As long as you can live with it. It’s your layout, others will see the beauty in your efforts. Thanks for sharing.
Love the layout, Those GP39's are nice, cant get my hands on one these days, last one I saw on Ebay sold for well over the list price of it when it was new, lol. MKT stuff fetches top dollar. I keep coming back to watch this video. Cheers Rob Oh, High five!!!
Very nice layout not to big and not to small, Do you have the tracks directly on the foam or did have somthing between? (on the Yards) Good job Thank you for share it.
Your layout looks really good. I like how you blended the back drops in. I model Conrail but I have some MKT to run as well. One reason I will run MKT is because the old tracks used to run through my yard before it was my yard. They were torn up in 1957 or 58. It was the high line that went to Paola KS.
Great work so far on the layout, love the video. Can't wait to see more videos and see your progress on the helix and 2nd deck. Keep em coming.........
Nice looking layout you've put together , look forward to seeing more of it as you progress . I can't believe you fit a car under that bridged section by the garage door . Take care .
That looks great, I especially like the bridge and how the land drops down to the river. Nice to see every vehicle fits the time frame too. You might want to find a way of making the buildings sit slightly lower into the ground once they're permanent or maybe put some bushes round the base of the farmhouse to eliminate the gap. Or raise it up to create a crawl space? Hope you get another 911 sometime, I'd imagine you miss it.
Re: 911 I definitely do....but when my kids are gone, there will be another! buildings still need some work- I agree. I am trying to get a basic level finished and then go back and add lots more detail to the layout. I dislike running on pink foam, so getting it 80% is the goal, then go back and weather, detail and make it more believable!
You have good taste with your scenery. But im sorry this layout looks very realistic in a closeup as i observed its prototypical the trains awesome. This is fine work. Looking forward to the updates & add ons. Marvelous work..😀🚧🚥🚞
I think your layout looks very nice. Maybe consider a "nolix" to get to a lower staging level. A single lap around the room along the wall with about a 2% grade will get you down over a foot. Then you save the floor space and can maintain larger radii.
Yes, I realized if I ever re-do the layout, I will be doing the nolix. This is essentially my first ever layout, so I am definitely learning as I go....
This is very attractive and well done model railroading. Your blending of the 3D scenery into the photo backdrops is excellent. Two comments: 1) If your switches in the area you intend to remove to make way for the helix are glued down with water-based glue you don't have to discard them: saturate the ballast and track with hot water and the glue will soften to permit gentle removal. 2) If you do indeed install your helix I can recommend using 22" radius sectional track: the radius is not too tight and your trains will navigate it just fine, and sectional track is so much easier to lay within a helix structure than flextrack. I have built my helixes this way and they work fine, and their footprint is about as small as can be. However, once your helix goes into your garage any auto of any size never will again! Choices, choices... Keep up your great work.
Thank you so much for the nice words and the tip on saving those switches! I am actually going a different direction- scrapping the helix and adding a big peninsula in the middle. More details to come!
@@wamozart9573 Well then you're definitely not getting another car in there now! That's okay, your beautiful use of the space supersedes the needs of a lowly automobile any day! Keep up your great modeling.
