Totally agree with you about the lambs, first loss is the best as my grandad used to say. I have lambs at the moment that are in a similar situation and am considering just leaving them out and let them grow naturally until January feb, cracking vid about true farming life, no bullshit 👏

Sam you are so humble people will desperately want to buy your merchandise because you're such a lovely lady. Glad to see you having a night out and enjoying yourself and subscribers buying you a drink. It was lovely to see you dancing away as your still a very young lady. Thank you for the educational video on costs because it is an eye opener to see how little you and Oliver make on your stock and what you put into them they have to be fed, feet dipped and body dipped, feet trimmed also worming all these cost time and money. You also have to put into consideration your time because you must get paid for your time everyone that goes out to work gets paid for that too. So you should add on a few more hundred pounds to that when you think about it. Also there inside in a shed and that has maintenance every now and then as you clean it out with machinery that needs diesel and parts. Farming everything costs you a fortune to replace and you have to think about your health it's a physically demanding job that affects your body carrying heavy bags move the wrong way and your laid up for weeks or months. You are all wonderful and not paid enough as far as I'm concerned so I hope you do very well on your merchandise and subscribers.

Hi Sam only ever commented once before but I have alot of time for you as 44 years go I was in the like you and had to pull some of the same stunts as yoarted farming on a rough broken down old farm like you. I now own it never and I have never milked a cow or keep a lamb or had a sum in 32 years. I know that things have changed since but my farm is still all down to and now it turns a profit you could only dream of and it was started by little rough lambs like yours so don't give up I started wintering little
Kendal rough hoggs that could not come till November and had l had to keep till the 5thon of April and they paid me 5o pence per week that was the deal but that was the rate before you were, the measurement was Ted towers wagon they were so small he could fit approximately 500 on . But we sentthem back in spring we could not get them on is wagon and drag some went back in a. Bedford tk . The secret was improved grass land and. Clean ground no. Worms and poor little hoggs were bigger and better than the hoggs that had been kept at home round Kendal, is Raymond Robinson still alive worked as fore 12:51 man at Kendal auction he would farm somewhere near your grandmother was great friend of mine the only thing it's ever cost me is my health

Sam, if you wear a lamb today and weigh that same lamb in one month time then calculate the lamb today at today’s price on the lamb and its weight in one months time at the price in one month from now you will realise it’s very good value what you’re spending on that lamb and how much more extra that lamb will cost you a month to sell

Hey good video. We had a similar situation, sold probably half the lambs fat straight off the grass/ewes averaged £130, when we weaned we fed the rest outside drawing lambs every week for about 6 weeks and all went fat apart from the last 12. The fat averaged £116 the 12 stores made £92.50. It’s questionable whether it was worth us feeding the lambs, it didn’t help with the price going down every week either. Conclusion is get as many fat off the grass as possible 🤷🏻

i think with all types of farming if you look too closely at your expenses you will find there is very little profit. i often think if we could get paid for our time we would do quite nicely........if only we could get paid an hourly equivalent to a accountant.........which reminds me i have our accountants bill to pay for doing last years accounts ..........£2,500.........why do we bother

I fatten my lambs on grass with whole oats or cake and works fine but they are mostly continental cross, I had some mule wethers once and had them in a shed fed them cereal based ration like you are and it took forever but as soon as I changed them to just cake, they was flying ! I recommend trying just cake even tho it is more expensive is does do a much better job and finish quicker so the days being fed is less. Also I’ve never fed little lambs as in my eyes they need to grow then fat not just feed and cost a fortune if that makes sense. Lambs looking well tho

@@Sam-shutt oh I’d love to see his face reading some of the comments you should make a video of him replying to some what a good man he is🤣, all I’m saying is I couldn’t afford proper cake for them mules at the start hence the cereal based but I wish I had just gone for proper from the beginning as they really changed and feeding small lightweight lambs just eats into the profit I think but everyone is different and things work on some systems and not others

Sam, its a bit of a juggling act .It all depends on lamb breed and the availability of autumn grass .If you have reseeds and a dry runback id definitely consider hoppper feeding for four to six weeks , then draft out the market ready fat lambs and sell the rest as what id call "forward stores", this might suit the more white faced lambs and as for the swales id say given the price of straw they would only be an option to finish if they were on slats. But it's as much to do with were you start as to were you finish and if these lambs were only worth £60 as stores then they will leave a decent margin and let's face it their not beltex. Hey do whats best for your system and cash flow. Good luck team.

Why have you got the goats ?
From what you have calculated there's no point in hanging on to the lambs to feed them then end up with no profit, or a loss.
What was Oliver cussing at when in the tractor at the dung heap ?

I would work out your value based upon fat price minus the price you'd have had for these actual lambs in the store ring, then you're looking at £100 fat minus £45, in which case you've still got 4 months worth of feeding before it no longer pays (so long as they don't die)
