- Happy New Year!!! Today I'm back at Premium Coach Group in Gilbert, AZ iinspecting a 2005 Monaco Diplomat. I wanted to share this inspection because 1. It is a metal roof and 2. It has a fairly common problem I see on Monaco RVs of this era. I will include a walk-thru at the end too.
Thanks for watching!

Wow, so cool to see this video- I bought this RV from premium coach. They are awesome folks! Great to see what you saw and they did a nice job fixing it up before I bought it. Also love your other videos!!
Hey! That's awesome! :) Welcome to the channel!
Beautiful coach! Do you still have it? If so, how’s she holding up?
My Monaco Executive is 23 years old and the fiberglass roof is like new! Quality was built in back then!
You probably take care of it too
@@AZExpert you bet I take care of it! This past summer I spent 5 months repainting it like new! Has a 450 hp Cummins with less than 100000 miles! My pride & joy!
Still a pretty nice looking rig. I still learn something from your roof inspections every time so thank you for continuing to show them. I hope you have an awesome new year.
Thanks for watching! :)
Everything I learned about RVing I learned from az expert!!!! I’m 36, I have a 2004 Holiday 40’ I fixed my entry door because of your Video. Really love all your older Monaco inspection and maintenance videos I do all my own work and you’re my how to guide!!
Great News! Thanks for watching! :)
I have a 1999 Holiday Rambler Vacationer and it has a metal roof and also aluminum siding. Built very well. My roof tape is peeling back less than this motorhome and now I know what I'll be doing to mine. Thanks James, for these tips.
you're welcome, thanks for watching
James, a quick thank you. I developed a leak on my super c in the front cap. Looked everywhere, no noticeable causes. Took what I have learned from your roof inspections, I looked at the clearance lights closer, yup 👍 , 1 light was allowing water to trickle in. Again, a big THANKS.
Im glad my ‘98 HR Endeavor has same roof still in excellent shape after all these years
Great to hear, you must take care of it
After watching your videos, I am in the market for a Monaco. I looked at 2004 Monaco Windsor today. I noted that the roof looked a little wavy when sighting from the ladder - I didn't walk on the roof. Is this normal for this type of roof. At least there is no wood in the roof structure. Such a shame that manufacturers aren't more thoughtful in their engineering and design. It is refreshing to see the great pride you have in what you do. I wish there were more people out there that did...I used to be a boater, but after trying to find a diesel mechanic for a year and a half, that was it for me.
Thanks for this video! I have a 2001 Monaco Diplomat that had the exact issue regarding the roof radius coming untucked. As you've recommended, I opted to use screws (stainless steel) rather than rivets for my repair. I figured that they had much better pull-through resistance to prevent the issue from reoccurring. At first, I tried using hex-head screws, but they did not fit into the aluminum channel that holds the vinyl molding. Hence, I switched to #10 self tapping screws (Philips head).... and, as you've mentionned, I must have broken over a dozen drill bits while installing these. Glad to know I'm not the only one!
Thanks for another great video! I've been following your channel for just under one year and can honestly say that I've gathered a ton of great advice! Keep up the good work!
Thanks for watching! :)
I didn't realize anybody outside of bus conversions and Newell did metal roofs. Coach is in pretty good shape for it's age.
It is!
@@AZExpert thanks for both entertaining and educating us RV laypeople. I have a much better appreciation for not only why quality RVs are expensive, but also why a good inspector is worth his weight in gold. 🥂
Never gets old. Usually something different each time. 👍😎🇺🇸🦅
Thanks for watching!
Nice work pointing out the ‘fail’ possibilities for us shoppers. Still looking but getting closer to acquisition
Watching to learn before I buy. Thinking you're saving me a ton of frustration, time and expense. Thank you so much!
You are very welcome! I hope it helps you make a wise choice!
It's interesting to see how darn-near identical our 2005 Monaco 37PST LaPalma's interior layout, as well as the roof construction, is to that of the Diplomat's, down to the exact same A/C roof shrouds, the aft one blowing away on us, while on a trip to Las Vegas. Prior to our trip, I found the same cracking as the one you inspected, along with a couple of loose mounting screws; it now has two new shrouds.
Thank very much your videos are very informative and I am learning so much about RV I’m retiring in in a couple of years so I’m getting interested in RV’ not sure if I want a diesel pusher “”LOL see I’m learning the lingo”” or a fifth wheel. Thanks again
Larry
Definitely depends on the life you want to lead
Great video and excellent job explaining everything! Thank you! Keep up the great work!
Thanks for watching! :)
DVDs & VHS are going to make a comeback, lol. That was funny.
Sad thing is..they will have this combo player for 800$ as new vintage stock in 10 years
Always enjoy learning from your inspections. Thank you. Happy trails!
Glad you like them!
Excellent build quality from that era of coaches. Pre-def and this type of construction is why they are in demand. The only units built new with metal roofs now are Newell or Prevost conversions to my knowledge. Our 06 Wanderlodge roof is aluminum. Great video James. Thank you again.
Hey You're welcome! Thanks for watching! :)
Yes screws are good for the refastening but I also use good quality Tri Bulb rivets and they work really well (as long as there is clearance behind the metal)...With screws there is still that long term chance of pulling away unless there is really solid backing...the tri bulb rivet will likely never pull away...just my 2 cents worth....PLUS you have that cool milwaukee rivet gun that made me go out and buy one! LOl...great tool!!!!
Thanks for watching! :)
Very informative 👏 👌 thank you..I have a monaco la palma..2006..
Glad it helped
Super educational and helpful as a travel trailer owner.
Thanks for watching! :)
Wow!!! Great info as to know what to look for. Hope you had a great CHRISTmas and you and yours have a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year. Breakthrough 2022
Thanks for watching! :)
The surprising part of this video to me was that ice had formed! Best Wishes James! Kevin
It gets frosty down here in Jan
@@AZExpert Ok, I guess we will just stay here in Missouri. 😊
Your videos have taught me a lot.....Thank you for sharing them. Just purchased a 2011Tiffen Allegro Red 36qsa. After all my research and with your guidance I narrowed my choice down to a Newmar or Tiffen. The Tiffen won out based on research showing positive customer support. I hope that continues given Bob Tiffen has sold the company to Thor. Fingers crossed.
Thanks for watching! :)
If it were me, I'd want the VCR/DVD combo, because out on the road, you might stop at a second hand shop, find an old copy of Mannix, or Murder She Wrote, and want to watch it over dinner.
Thanks for this great video! I bought a 2002 HR with aluminum roof 14 months ago. I am glad to hear the aluminum roof is like a floating roof as I was worried it was going to be a problem. I have the same problem with the rail at the top where the roof is attached to the side except mine is where the slide topper is.
Just make sure to fix as when you can and Thanks for watching! :)
Still in pretty good shape for it's age.
Sure is
My '88 Itasca Suncruiser had a metal roof. However they use a fiberglass side caps, they didn't bend the metal. I never had an issue with it over the 11yrs I owned it. I sold it in 1999.
Thanks for watching! :)
Talking about fantastic vent fans my 2006 komfort came with a factory one in the bedroom which has been fine the other 2 I put them in around 2013 the motors are starting to squeak 🐁 a little I may upgrade to the ones that open with the lid and get rid of the ginormous vent covers nice video James
Always a good investment. Thanks for watching!
Not bad. I have 1991 overland mallard with epdm roof. No leak ever. Going on 33 years old soon. Built to last. This rig os solid built as well. Todays rvs are weak. Too weak
Love my 2006 Monaco Knight - have lived in it for 4 years. AC/Heat pump went out yesterday so I've got work to do 😑
At least it's the weekend? lol My Washer died yesterday so guess what I get to do today
Great to see how to manage a metal roof. Thank you! We still love these roof videos.
Thanks for watching! :)
Need to show the toy hauler trailer in the background, they are pretty special.
Ill keep it in mind! Thanks for watching
I like it, want a signature series but nice ones are still costly
That they are
This rv looks better for the age and quality than the one I am considering .
IT really depends on how it was stored and if they were properly maintained. Even then, a used RV is buyer beware.
@@AZExpert Yes that's why I have gone thru 3 inspectors 2 the dealers were nightmare with the used of inspector and another couldn't wait for me to get my report. Now the present rv it seems to have a few problems, black tank connections was a leak and engine was showing signs of smoke and the generator has a code 3. The dealer is working on this major issues. The rest is cosmetic. We will see the rv for the 3 time if the problem continues of something else show up. Definitely we will walk away for the 3 time. I feel like I am trying to find my prince 🤴 charm character😂. I saw a yellow stain on the ceiling fabric the first time. On the second time I found another plus small black spots. Have you seen any thing like that during your inspection? What is causing that? Can it be removed and how to avoid getting more? Thanks James.
Monaco’s are going up in value. If they’re a good shape. Kind of like classic cars. I love the older coaches. Personality.
I do too
👍👍🇨🇦✌️🇨🇦✌️🇨🇦👍 Thanks James
I like that one . Decent roof for the age I think.
I think so too
Really appreciate all of your insights on what can be wrong on RV's, are there certain type of RV roofs you can't walk on?
not really, some trailers have very thin roofs that you must walk on the trusses but remember vents and a/c's have to be installed somehow.
Interesting that they seam the roof like that. We had a Sundowner toy hauler that was 102" wide, and had a one-piece aluminum roof. The downside to aluminum is heat transfer.
thats true
Glad that wasn’t a Winnebago. Seems one piece fiberglass or metal is best. I don’t think I’ve ever seen you review an FRP roof. That’s what I have on my 2010 forest River sprinter based C. Wondering what you think. Thanks
I've reviewed a few FRP including a Georgetown recently. Thanks
Great video, what's the longest lasting best lap sealant for the roof; dicor, 3M, sikaflex, or ? They talk about needing to be able to expand and contract as the RV moves down the road, but don't many traditional home construction flashing and window sealants allow for expansion and contraction especially in cold climates and they seem to last for many years longer that rv sealants?
I've seen dicor last 20+ years problem free very often.
Another great inspection. Do you ever get out towards Yuma? Would love to have you look at my roof & a couple of other issues. 98 Holiday Rambler Endeavor 37cds - in good shape IMO but a couple of issues. Only here until mid April 2022 😀
I don't, that's a real trek for me from Mesa
@@AZExpert Thanks for replying. If I can get out to the Mesa / Metro phoenix area is there a chance of getting an inspection appointment with you?
All it needs is some flex seal. It would be good as new. ha ha
HA. HA. very funny
The only bad thing about pulling them rubber scraw cover moldings is the paint cracking i use hot water when pulling them frome the radius Edge to keep the paint frome cracking after carefully cutting the Silicon because im a painter i know the the headache of Tech's who work way to fast and they just yank on them when doing repairs
Thanks for watching!
@@AZExpert your welcome i live in Glendale and work in mesa we do a lot of custom cabinet work floors our biggest job has been going through a total remodel its now if full paint work its a semi tractor show hauler
LIKE,LIKE,LIKE
Thanks for watching! :)
Could one overlay aluminum sheets over a conventional RV roof? I know it's a crazy idea. Just thinking.
No
Love my Monaco. No issues on mine. Now that I said that..........
You have challenged the simulation
Thank you got the info
Thanks for watching!
James, these are excellent videos, thanks! When you do these inspections are you doing them for the dealer considering taking it in on trade, or are you hired bu a prospective buyer?
Generally the dealer hires me
I have 2003 with the same TV ANTENNA, like to upgrade?? What one should i get??
King products makes a modern replacement. Make sure and pick up the base plate as well. Worker great on replacing my antenna on .y 02 Diplomat with this same antenna
Satellite dish lol
Would be nice to know what kind of cost would be associated with repairs described. Like a ballpark overall guess.
Also the time frame that might be expected for something like this.
Sorry I dont quote prices on here
Thanks for the walk around. I purchased a 2005 Monaco Knight and the roof was bad... well I thought it was until watching your video. The roof has 'floating' parts, like what you showed, and all the seals on the end caps were just like what you showed. Luckily I had already cut them back a little bit and sealed them, but didn't remove the seal.
My question, is that my roof looks identical, but doesn't have the seam down the middle. Did they make metal roofs just like that but with out the center seam?
Thanks for watching!
I’m looking at a 2016 Monaco dynasty 45P with 40,000 miles to upgrade from our itasca meridian 40u. Read a bunch of reviews and everyone seems to love them, of the few that mentioned some problems, they were very minor.
Would like to know what you think ?
Enjoyed the inspection....ever consider including the asking price of the coaches you inspect? That are for sale?
Sometimes I do, but I'm not in sales. That's their bag
@@AZExpert your opinion means a lot to many many people.....just sayin!!
Please comment on your feelings about installing a metal roof on newer trailers to replace the existing fabric roof. I have a two year old Torque with a fabric roof (TPO?) and am thinking I would like to install an aluminum roof. I feel the fabric is not adhered well and is very thin and weak. Already have installed tape on several holes from branches. I came across your video while searching for info but there doesn’t seem to be much.
Looked at a 2004 monico diplomat with 38 k on it. Kept in a building it's entire life when not in use. Super clean in and out. They are asking 65 k firm. Do you think this is a good deal?
I’ve got a 1998 Coleman ranger slide in truck camper. I need a new front skylight. Where would I order a new one from? What measurements do I need?
Google is your friend
Cold in AZ is what? 50? Hahaha
It gets below freezing. It has even snowed on occasion
@@AZExpert Whoa!!!!!
What makes this an entry-level RV versus a top-of-the-line RV for the year?
It's really all about finish
What's the best Monaco/Holiday rambler? Any to stay away from? I'm looking at 2002-2010
Looks a lot like my 06 Monaco Monarch except that is in better shape, AZ Sun last 11 years on mine
Our sun is rough but still better than wet mold
I've got a 1993 Minnie Winnie class c that has an aluminum roof. It has some corrosion on the aluminum along the passenger side a few inches from the edge. Would you splice the metal or cover it with some sort of sealant? It's a strip about 4" wide along the edge cap about 4 ft long. I'm also wondering why it only corroded in this spot. There are some perforations in the metal.
What caulking would you recommend for the radius repair for beaver/monoco ?
Do you use caulking under metal molding ?
Thanks for the video, I have the same style roof on my 2002 Safari Trek, do you have any advice on paint for these, the paint is starting to wear thin on mine in a few places
no advice
Is the bracing under the roof aluminum?
Yes
yes under the foam
What are your thoughts on RV Roof Armor coating? My 02’ Cross Country needs a new roof this spring. Rubber is getting brittle.
It's a bandaid.
I've seen that rig. Why didn't you talk about the windshield seal?
Because it's a roof video. Thanks for watching!
Do u have a video for slide out topper for monaco la palma?
I don't, but many slide out toppers are similar
Nice rig and very little pollution gear on engine.
Thanks for watching! :)
Beaver and country coach we're using fiberglass back then. Better than metal?
Check with the manufacturer
Did you check the top of the slide outs themselves
I check everything on inspection. It doesn't always make it to the videos. I inspect those with the roof
When you replace a roof, do you have to replace what you took off? . A rubber roof for a rubber roof or fiberglass for fiberglass roof or can you change it to something else?.
Generally you would stick with what the manufacturer put on there
@@AZExpert ok, thanks!
What would the approx cost on such repairs, and slide out vinyl replacement run?
Sorry I dont quote prices on here
I don't own an RV but would like to. Have no clue on costs, that why I ask.
FIRRRRRRRST
Thanks for watching! :)
Beta baby Beta:)
Thanks for watching! :)
Do they use steel or aluminum rivets?
ALuminum
