I enjoyed the movie, but I ask that we please cut the director, Ryan Coogler, a break. He had to do 4 things that would be hard for any director. In fact, 2 of those things were just straight up impossible. 1. Introduce Ironheart in a satisfying way (really difficult), 2. Make a dope sequel to Black Panther (really difficult), 3. Introduce Namor, his homeland, and his whole backstory in a satisfying way (impossible), 4. Pay tribute to T'Challa/Chadwick in a satisfying way (impossible). He did all of that while still mourning the extremely sudden loss of his friend.

Angel, Shuri is a scientist. She's not emotional, she's very logical. She's gonna be a quiet rage. The rage you wanted is for someone who is pure emotional. Acting choice or not. That's will never make sense for Shuri. She didn't even agree with her mum during the burning ritual at the waters edge.

They are a normal nation of people, some of whom are warriors. They are heavily protected and they were not worried about anyone on EARTH being able to get to them and the Queen felt safe in the Castle (the most heavily guarded place in Wakanda). He told Ramonda if she sent anyone down there he would kill her. Specifically her- and she did it anyway. Plus Nakia killed one of his citizens. Like Shuri said, that was an act of war. Ehhh... Shuri doesn't lack for confidence. She's intelligent, neglects her mother's objections to go into the field and rescue the scientist. That's not insecurity.
She mentions the rage when she's on the beach with her mother. Shuri says something about if she thinks about her brother too long, she wants to set the world on fire. We just don't really see that side of Shuri throughout the film until she meets Kilmonger. That was my gripe: if Shuri has been so angry this whole time, we should've seen it made more prevalent throughout the film than just after seeing Kilmonger.

I think she saw Killmonger because he was/is the reflection of how she was actually feeling and a reflection of the conflicting feelings. She was ANGRY! I think Black women are always walking the tightrope and questioning our feelings or hiding them for societal troupe reasons.
Each Black Panther sees who they need for their journey as BP when they enter the Ancestral Plane. T'Challa was angry and confused by his father's choices, so he saw his predecessor. Technically Killmonger was BP too, her mother never was. Her grief is why she hoped she would see her mother one last time, but her new role required she see Killmonger.
Also Killmonger is a subtle reminder of how we got here...The child who is not embraced by the village, will burn it down to feel its warmth.

She’s a whole princess who rarely fights in the field, but with her mind and technology. She’s not the violent and rageful type, especially the way that she’s been grieving her brother was by staying in her technology and her lab. I feel this episode was a downer. I was anticipating coming together and talking about the movie with everyone and instead it became a debate about the movie. Black Panther will never be just a movie. It will never be just a plot. It should never be just reduced to a rating. Even though it is apart of the Marvel Universe, it will always have a greater significance to African people around the world. The emotional impact of the Black Panther Character and Chadwick Bozeman will always be an important part the Black Panther legacy. It wasn’t just Kev who felt this emotional connection. Lots of people cried in movie. Some things have such an emotional impact that ratings aren’t important.

Angel’s take was absolutely insensitive and trash. She’s spoke about the memories of Chadwick being included in the movie as if it was supposed to just be a cut and dry film and Ryan Coogler and the rest of the cast has addressed how responsible Chadwick was for the accuracy of the on screen African-ness of T’Challa and Wakanda itself. They literally loved this man, so to expect anything less of a tribute to him was trash. These actors are more than just actors, they are people who lost a friend. Angel was also loud and wrong about Shuri not being angry enough. Shuri could not necessarily afford to explode her anger due to the fact that she is by all accounts, the new queen and Black Panther. Her emotions overtook, but only in the right moments. Shuri had to be pushed to be BP the same way her brother had to take the mantle after their dad was murdered as well. There’s a creative parallel.
And them not giving credit to Riri Williams’s place in the movie sucks too because I wonder if Angel would’ve felt that way if Tony Stark was there instead.
Then Angel trashed the Wakandan boat thing and that pissed me off because the Talokan army rolled up on their turf and tore stuff so the Wakandan army had the same energy. Angel was pulling for critiques where it wasn’t necessary. It’s giving “It didn’t go the way I felt it should’ve went, so I hate it” vibes. But this isn’t surprising coming from someone who didn’t think Chadwick deserved the Best Actor Oscar for Ma Rainey after not watching the whole movie. Ma’am stop.

They had a common enemy and Riri unknowingly played a part in that, which started the initial disagreement. If Shuri didn't have the strength of the BP, Wakanda would've fallen, or been weak for some time. Talokan had too many soldiers out there. I loved this Black Panther movie. I think this movie was done in an abundance of love and the cast new and old was amazing. In my honest and humble opinion, I think this movie speaks more to people that are dealing with grieving/mourning the loss of a loved one. I think this movie just sets up the potential for another BP movie to come through. Lastly, I think us as Black folk, we have very high expectations and like to compare things to each. It’s ok to have two things be equally great but for different reasons.

  • @CARATMom
    @CARATMom 2 года назад +10

The whole movie was Shuri having a hard time grieving her brother. It wouldn’t make any sense for her to complete her arc in the middle of the movie. Also she did weep over her mother. Her behavior in the lab however was consistent with someone who is scientific and methodical. She always struggled with the conflict between tradition and science. Also Shuri was not sentimental about tradition and would often have reactions that was not similar to other people expectations
I haven’t experienced a recent death and I loved the movie. You don’t have to be processing grief to be moved by Black Panther.

  • @africansuperhero

Kev, the mourning, memorial and emotional feelings about Chadwick were threaded throughout the film simply because the writers (Ryan Coogler and Joe Robert Cole) wanted the film's theme to be about "grief".

I felt this movie wasn’t just for the culture it was for ours and native’s well. I would have loved more commentary on the Yucatan story line, especially from Josh seeing as though most people who were either Mayan Native, Native Mexican, or just Hispanic as a whole were extremely impressed with finally being reflected and represented on the big screen. I felt this was more for the Culture as a whole and I loved it. I loved every bit of it and I think they did an amazing job given the circumstances.

    SPOILERS:
To be fair we have to look at this as Shuri's journey. It's not just her origin story, but one of grief and moving forward. I loved it. I see what Angel means about the flower, but most likely if Shuri felt she failed her brother by not recreating the heart shaped herb she wouldn't have continued trying to recreate it after he passed. It would have been a reminder of what she considered the biggest failure of her life. It would have taken something big (like her mother's loss) to push her to attempt it again.

My thoughts: I think we expect people to act the same way we would in Shuri’s situation and that’s not realistic. Also we don’t know what we would do. Grief comes in stages. We went through the STAGES of grief with Shuri.
    The stages are
    Denial
    Anger
    Bargaining
    Depression
    Acceptance
    Not always in that order

I completely disagree with Angel saying that the Marvel women don't get to act out of rage. Like we didn't just get a whole WandaVision series and Dr. Strange and the Multiverse of Madness of Scarlet Witch raging against EVERYTHING because she lost 1 person. Shuri's quiet rage felt like a nice change to all of the wildin that Scarlet Witch was doing. I like seeing their portrayals of how grief looks different on different people

Everyone’s entitled to their opinion, but Angel seemed to miss a lot. First of all, everyone grieves differently. Also, her confusion is confusing to me. It was by no means a perfect movie, but I loved it. I was annoyed by the Riri character, also felt like Val was forced into the movie. The death was hard and M’Baku could have had a larger role.
