  • Suddenly, your VW air-cooled engine dies out of nowhere! Now what? Starter cranks, but no spark? Dollars to doughnuts your Blue Coil is breaking, bad! At current, there are NO SYMPTOMS of an OG coil starting to go bad, but not to fear, here are a few tips to check the "health" of your coil.
    WE PREFER OUR COIL FACING DOWN SO THE CONNECTORS ARE AS CLOSE TO THE DISTRIBUTOR AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE! Capiche !? How you want your #bracket to "sit" is up to you. Aesthetics has nothing to do with coil function.
    GOOD COIL HEALTH:
    If it is running warm or hot to the touch, that is OK. It may seep a little white or yellow wax, that is OK, too. Read on for "BAD Coil Health"

    I feel this may be my problem with my 67 beetle. New project 1600 - replaced H30/31 Carb with new H30/31. Replaced fuel filters(2), alternator and crank pully/belt, set the valves - set the points- set the timing (static light method).
    The problem is the engine will crank and crank then finally start after a couple times. Definitely getting gas.. smell and opened flap on carb and can see gas squirting into the carb.. with electric choke once it starts we are good and I can drive around my little town just fine with no hiccup or bogging down or stall when coming to a stop with a clean idle. Once I turn the key off like at the store or back at home I have to crank the engine over and over to get it to fire or start up again.
    Should I check the coil? Spark Plugs?
    Thanks for all your videos.

      Jeremiah, I feel for you! I am not the best VW troubleshooter by far but it seems you have covered everything but the coil!! Well done, sir!! Here is how you can test your coil: It takes 2 peeps. One to crank the engine, the other performs the test. Disconnect the high tension cable from the distributor. That's the cable going to the center of the distributor cap. Now grasp the cable at least 3" or 4" away from the exposed terminal end so you won't get shocked. Place the end about 1/2" away from a good ground. (intake manifold, sheet metal). Have your helper crank the engine. Observe the spark... a great coil will have a thick super bright spark accompanied by a sharp cracking sound. I have seen a strong coil spark jump a gap to my intake manifold from over an 1 & 1/2" away!! A weak coil will have a skinny yellow spark. You may have to move the cable end closer to the gorund you're using to even get a spark! Shake your coil. If you hear a lot of sloshing around inside, it's time to replace it. Bosch coils at times will seep a wax-like substance when subjected to long periods of high speed driving. This has no effect on the function of a Bosch coil. If I were you, I would replace the coil & see what happens! Let me know, Jeremiah, how it goes for you. Happy Fahrvergnugen!Also, you didn't mention, but weather conditions play on a coil's ability to work. Very cold or very hot temps, shortend the life of a coil.

    HEY VW BRUCE AWESOME VIDEO BROTHA I HAVE A QUESTION, I just bought a 58 bug with a 1915 engine with dual kadrons carbs. I cleaned out one of the carbs that wasn't spitting gas got it running started to attempt to adjust carbs and heard a loud pop like a back fire so I shut it off .. now I get nothing when I turn the key just a click any idea where I should start. im not a mechanic but I will definitly try to fix the issue myself first just need some guidance

      @VWBRUCE  2 года назад

      Thank you BEARD BULLY for your kind words. Sounds like an electrical issue. First, determine how much the original wiring was altered. '58 Bugs only have a few fuses & the wires were attached to electrical components

    • @VWBRUCE

      Thank you BEARD BULLY for your kind words. A '58 Bug?? WOW!!! Lucky you! Sounds like you have an electrical issue. Determine how much, if any, of the original wiring was altered. '58 Bugs have only a few fuses & the wiring was attached to the electrical components via screws. There should be no push-on connections. Was your bug converted from 6 volt to 12? Check your fuses, the starter motor & the solenoid. Make sure all connections are tight. Do the headlights work? Turn signals? You stated that the loud pop sounded like a backfire but something popped in the electrics to just get a click! Did you smell any hot wiring/cable insulation? Does any wire/cable insulation look melted? Check your regulator as well. Hope this helps. Keep me posted & Happy Fahrvergnugen!!

    Is it ok to use a Beru Part# ZS172 3.3 ohms coil on stock points set up. I've heard it might burn points faster using one not at factory specs your car calls for. I got a 72 Ford Pinto 2.0 eng

    I was hoping you were going to show me at the end what wires were connected to either the positive or negative ? I have forgotten everything??
    The wire to oil switch is that from +ve ?
    Likewise the wire running to behind carb ? Is that from +ve ?

    • @VWBRUCE
      @VWBRUCE  3 месяца назад

      Hi arnietwo 11, thank you for watching my video.
      The wire to the oil switch is one that is part of the wiring harness from the body firewall on the driver side. It has nothing to do with the coil.
      Depending on what carburetor you're running 1 or 2 wires will come from the left side of the coil to the choke &/ or the electromagnetic cut-off valve of the carburetor. Hope this answers your question.
      Happy Fahrvergnugen.

    Hey man think you could give me some insight on my 69 westfalia, I took the coil out and I'm not sure what wires go back into negative/positive

    • @VWBRUCE
      @VWBRUCE  Год назад

      Hi Gary. What I can share is for a bone stock engine set up. Stock carb, stock distributor, etc. The green wire from the distributor condenser goes to the small connection on the right side of the coil. That is the only wire to connect to the right side. The auto choke & back up lights wire go the connector on the left side of the coil. That's all there is to it. Good luck & Happy Fahrvergnugen! - VW Bruce

      Hi Brent, Good question! I found it while surfing TheSamba.com for a restored carb. I saw an Ad for exactly what I needed and clicked on it. I got the Solex 30PICT-2 from Tim at VolkzBitz.com . Their quality workmanship and customer service is GREAT! With that, note that they are pricey though. Here is their link -- www.volkzbitz.com/prices---contact-info.html

    I was just wondering if it is acceptable to mount the coil upside down? I have one in my 72 Alfa that is mounted horizontally and someone suggested it should be mounted vertically with the posts facing upwards. Is this true?

    • @VWBRUCE
      @VWBRUCE  Месяц назад

      Good question, Tony Ray. My VW experience with Bosch coils is it makes no difference how they're mounted. Other makes & models of cars & coils may require a specific mounting method. Hopevthis helps you. Thanks for watching my videos.
