The"guy" is Byron Berline, one of our grand national fiddle champions. And the other fiddler is Mark O'conner, also one of our grand national champs! It doesnt get any better than this!!!
Don't worry...he KNOWS who Bill Monroe is (or was, RIP). The introducer, Byron Berline, played with Bill in his Bluegrass Boys band and actually co-wrote this song with Bill. He was obviously using understatement in his introduction.
CALIFORNIA... Byron Berline AND Mark O'Connor ON FIDDLES, John Hickman ON banjo, Jerry Douglas on dobro, and of course Bill Monroe on MANDOLIN....WHO IS ON BASS?? THESE PLAYERS ARE ALL THE BEST IN THEIR CLASS!!
@MeatIsbetter I started on guitar age 11, and still flatpick - learned from the Oleee Timers.. old plank floors, Franklin wood stoves and music all night long - great way to grow up. I was about 12 years, and one day someone brought in the biggest instrument I'd ever seen - and when it filled up the room with low notes I was Hooked! Been doing bluegrass, swing and gypsy ever since! And you... Banjer only?
MONROE DIDNT GOOF UP . THAT IS A GLITCH IN THE RECORDING . IM NOT A BIG DOBRO FAN , BUT JERRY DOUGLAS PLAYED IT STRAIGHT MELODY HERE , AND FIT IN PERFECTLY
Outstanding performance of this tune. Even in his older years Bill could still make that old Loyd Loar sing. This band had one fine line up of musicians. Byron and Mark are fantastic on the twin fiddles on this number.
I just discovered this of my friend of 5 decades. Thank you. Let me share some of my good fortune thanks to Byron... First, my most treasured field recording with a bunch of superstars.. frobbi.org/audio/culpeper.html Then on the Opry: frobbi.org/audio/berline-monroe-opry.html And during a week at his house, with John and George Hickman... frobbi.org/audio/berlinehouse73
Bill Monroe was the greatest bluegrass musician ever and his idea of what the music should be was awesome. No wonder he succeeded to such a super degree! Bill - America thanks you!
@MeatIsbetter (shhh... I agree, but didn't want to say anything... you know how 'sensitive' the fiddlers get ;) Thanks! (for the record.. it's really the Bass that carries the show!)
...HillbillyJ, are you sure Bill's break was edited, or did he just go into the ditch at 1:42. Apparently Bill was uptight about who he was playing with,...-not his band! It would have been better,...sans a dobro !...Bill and dobros didn't mix, you know! !
Watching the fiddle players is like watching poetry in motion - absolutely brilliant!!!
Byron Berline is one of the best there is.
I like how they introduce him as "being around bluegrass a long time." Ya think?!
Considering it was Byron who introduced him, he probably didn't mind it

Don't forget that young dobro player; he sounds pretty good playing with Mr. Bill.
The incredible Jerry Douglas
What a great version of an amazingly beautiful tune, with and by the The Father of Bluegrass!!! Thank you for posting this!
Awesome. Byron aand Mark with Bill on mando and Jerry on dobro. As a multi-instrumentalist it don't get no better.
Bill Monroe was a genius as much as a man who would push himself and best anyone at music. He went into it like a bloodsport
Not only Monroe (God), Berline and O'Connor (which is insane as it is) but Dan Crary: guitar and John Hickman: banjo. Psycho!
AND JERRY DOUGLAS-DOBRO !
What a super group! Looks like Dan Crary , Mark O'Connor , Byron Berline, Jerry Douglas, and Butch Robbins backing uo the King!

gorgeous--I forgot that song had a melody
As Bill said many times, the "hot" guitar and dobro aint' no part of nothing in his music
The man who created a entire genre of music crushing it !!!!!!

The introducer needs to get his facts straight. Bill Monroe created bluegrass lol not just been in it for a long time lol.
Look at Monroes hands. Ancient but still playin' it right. I hope I get to heaven just so I can pick with old Bill.
Thank you for noticing and noting.
I was awed by the image.
Humbled. Reverent.
For all us would be mandolin players... notice his right hand moving, nothing else. No elbows, shoulders, etc..
The guy says here is a man that has been in bluegrass along time. He started it.
BIG MON = THE FATHER OF BLUEGRASS
As Bill would've said...that's a powerful number. :)
I love the way Mr. Monroe lifts the mandolin in the B part. What a great tune, and thanks for posting.
Too cool
GREAT SOUND FROM A GREAT BAND , WITH THE FABULOUS BONUS OF MONROE HIMSELF .NEVER BE BEATEN
bill is the greatest....
MONROE DIDNT GOOF UP . THAT IS A GLITCH IN THE RECORDING . IM NOT A BIG DOBRO FAN , BUT JERRY DOUGLAS PLAYED IT STRAIGHT MELODY HERE , AND FIT IN PERFECTLY
Wow! That's wonderful! It's really cool how those fiddlers keep their timing together!
And the bowing too! It’s just magical.
Not too surprising lol
mandolin players will soon rule the world!
TOTALLY AMAZING - Mark O'Connor up there - MY hero!
Used to be mine. Then he got woke. Just another commie now.
R.I.P. Byron Berline
You can’t beat those twin fiddles❤
Outstanding performance of this tune. Even in his older years Bill could still make that old Loyd Loar sing. This band had one fine line up of musicians. Byron and Mark are fantastic on the twin fiddles on this number.
This man started the bluegrass tradition
how has no one mentioned Dan Crary on guitar
You play guitar, huh?
It's Byron!!
That's what heaven is like.

Mark O'Connor? I thought it was Tex Logan !!!
2:09
I believe the fiddlers led this one. Byron wrote the song
wish mark would play more bluegrass nowdays
I like John Hickman the best.
Guys, this as good as it gets!
Bill needed a band like this! He's in his element with these great players.
Damn that was Great!!!!!!!
I love Dan Crary
My God stunning
GREAT!

No, that's Dan Crary
Also a former Bluegrass Boy.
Grrrrrrrat!!!!!
Sweet Fiddles!!
are their any albums of all these guys together...minus Bill I guess since he was a guest
this is a great dancing song and jeff davis and mike grove from newport,tn, can both play this song really extra good
Fantastic! Where's my goddamn fiddle.....?
Superb. Seven stars!
The show came to an end.
tony's version from church street blues is pretty killer too
mandolin players will soon rule the world!
I think he played an extra
"A" part and the band followed him.
the dobro player sucked everything up almost
the "Dobro" player is Jerry Douglas.
Music 🎶

!
the repeat at 1: 42 is an electronic glitch in the recording. had nothing to do with monroes' playing.
it sounds like YOU just went into the ditch
