No one is talking about the horse on the left at 3:00 still charging and crushing the orcs even after losing its rider. A true war horse.
Now checked it, he's an absolute legend. Fighting to the death!
A true legend
That horse was crazy af
Horses are herd animals and will always follow other horses. Brave horse!
King Horse-oden, lord of the horses of the Rohirrim third only to Shadowfax and Theoden’s steed. He shall neigh in glory as he rides riderless into battle! Songs shall be sung of his great valour and glory as he stares into the eyes of the Dark Enemy’s forces, Orc, Goblin, Dunlings, Easterlings, Mumakills, and more!
"What can men do against us reckless hate?"
"Ride out and meet them."
"For death and glory?"
"For Rohan. For your people."

Problem for the Orcs is, that land was not Mordor ;P It was Gondor, on a flat land perfect for horse charges.

@@ahmetakgun5358 Well what were they going to do? Buy a bunch of horses and then sell them once filming ended?
If I get a time machine, I'm going back to be an extra in this scene.
One of the most interesting things I learned is most of the Rohirrim riders were women dressed as men, because most equestrian sport participants in NZ (and most western countries) are women

Can you even begin to imagine how terrifying it would be to hear “DEATH!!!” as a battle cry? Like, all 6000+ of those warriors and horses know full well that they are riding straight to their end. They know that, and have completely accepted it. THEY. HAVE. NO. FEAR. And they are 100% determined to dedicate every last fiber of their being, every scrap of their remaining lifeforce and willpower to bring every last one of those orcs to their graves right along with them. The sheer conviction just shakes me to my core every time, and they’re FICTIONAL!
That Death cry gives me chills everytime! One of my favorite scenes in movie history.
This 💯💯💯
The moment the violin hits I knew the greatest scene in movie history has occured.
A red day..a sword day..ere the sun rises.
This is really moving and terrifying, but it's a bit different from the book and I think is even better there.
Theoden gives his speech, they charge, "And then all the host of Rohan burst into song, and they sang as they slew, for the joy of battle was on them, and the sound of their singing that was fair and terrible came even to the City."
After Theoden has died, Eomer finds him and puts on a tough look and basically tells everyone not to cry 'cause it was a good death. Then he finds Eowyn.
"Éowyn, Éowyn!' he cried at last: 'Éowyn, how come you here? What madness or devilry is this? Death, death, death! Death take us all!'
Then without taking counsel or waiting for the approach of the men of the City, he spurred headlong back to the front of the great host, and blew a horn, and cried aloud for the onset. Over the field rang his clear voice calling: 'Death! Ride, ride to ruin and the world's ending!'
And with that the host began to move. But the Rohirrim sang no more. Death they cried with one voice loud and terrible, and gathering speed like a great tide their battle swept about their fallen king and passed, roaring away southwards."
First these guys come at you singing, they don't fear you, or even take you seriously. They just want to kill you and sing in joy for the opportunity.
Then your great general has died and the battle is going badly, but something else has happened as well, and now they are pissed. Or actually gone mad with suicidal frenzy for vengance. The guys who moments ago were singing because they liked killing so much, are now riding at you full speed, completly disregarding their own safety and yelling DEATH in unison, from the top of their lungs. Good luck.
I ENVY those who were able to see this first in theaters...
It was big time epic, I recall.
You wouldn't believe how it felt, mate.
Yes. Lucky them.
3X in theaters. Very lucky.
Unforgettable. Imagine, when closing credits showed up, it was PAINFUL. Back to reality...
Sorry EndGame, you can't beat this with your 'Assemble' scene...
Endgames scene is way better
@@thehighground4920 did you know, that Russo Bros. was inspired by this scene?
@@LYOVSXXX no
The Endgame one was pretty generic ngl. The ones in Infinity War (the Wakandan charge and Thor's arrival) were pretty good, but still not as good as this.
Why people try to bring Endgame into this? Why not Twilight, when vampires and... what's them hairy things... werewolves, are charging each other across the field? Or Three Amigos against a Mexican gang horde? Or in Police Academy, in that Blue Oyster scene, when flamboyant local dancers are charging at those police cadets?
I remember reading the book and getting choked up during the Ride of the Rohirrim chapter. It was the one part of the movies that I couldn’t wait to see on screen.
Packed theater, the distant horn sounding their arrival, Theoden’s speech, the cry of Death, the charge, the music. Seriously the best movie moment in my life.
Can you quote the scene here from the book? 🥺
@@marlonquintana3466 “At that sound the bent shape of the king sprang suddenly erect. Tall and proud he seemed again; and rising in his stirrups he cried in a loud voice, more clear than any there had ever heard a mortal man achieve before:
Arise, arise, Riders of Theoden!
Fell deeds awake: fire and slaughter!
spear shall be shaken, shield be splintered,
a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises!
Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor!
With that he seized a great horn from Guthlaf his banner-bearer, and he blew such a blast upon it that it burst asunder. And straightway all the horns in the host were lifted up in music, and the blowing of the horns of Rohan in that hour was like a storm upon the plain and a thunder in the mountains.
Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor!
Suddenly the king cried to Snowmane and the horse sprang away. Behind him his banner blew in the wind, white horse upon a field of green, but he outpaced it. After him thundered the knights of his house, but he was ever before them. Eomer rode there, the white horsetail on his helm floating in his speed, and the front of the first eored roared like a breaker foaming to the shore, but Theoden could not be overtaken. Fey he seemed, or the battle-fury of his fathers ran like new fire in his veins, and he was borne up on Snowmane like a god of old, even as Orome the Great in the battle of the Valar when the world was young. his golden shield was uncovered, and lo! it shone like an image of the Sun, and the grass flamed into green about the white feet of his steed. For morning came, morning and a wind from the sea; and darkness was removed, and the hosts of Mordor wailed, and terror took them, and they fled, and died, and the hoofs of wrath rode over them. And then all the host of Rohan burst into song, and they sang as they slew, for the joy of battle was on them, and the sound of their singing that was fair and terrible came even to the City.”
Legend has it, Eomer went through the entire army and kept going south screaming, riding straight into the stories of myth and legend.
Lmao
he screamed and ride into the future to become judge dredd

Like in the hobbit, the leader of the dwarves and every dwarven soldier was CGI... Where in the LOTR, all important characters and characters at the front of shots were always real. Apparently it was like this in the Hobbit because they "ran out of time".

This is by FAR the greatest calvary charge ever put to film. The entire trilogy is an unparalleled masterpiece. I do not think i will see another that rivals this in my lifetime.
Its a very different charge but for drama and music the one at the end of Excalibur is very stiring too.
This is why Lord of the rings is the greatest fantasy series in existence, comparing this to game of thrones would be pointless.
Yes friend, but in the end it also benefits from the popularity that Game of Thrones has had, many people have joined the world of fantastic literature thanks to this series, and interest in the Lord of the Rings also shot up as a result of the serie. Thanks to Martin's universe many people have discovered Tolkien's great and insurmountable universe, everything is profit.
Honestly, the only thing that GOT has that LOTR will never come near are the titties and borderline porno scenes.
The Game of Thrones book are amazing, and really can't be compared to LOTR since they are so different. Yes, the later seasons of GoT were less then spectacular, but that doesn't change how crazy of an achievement the show and books were. Seriously, not every fucking fantasy out there needs to be measured against LoTR. Malazan, The Wheel of Time, the Witcher, the Stormlight Archives, A Game of Thrones/Song of Ice and Fire etc are all completely different in pretty much all ways from LoTR and cannot be compared because of how different they are... Fantasy has evolved far beyond the wonderful story that Tolkien created. I absolutely love both series for very different reasons.

Its said the Riders of Rohan were modeled after the Norsemen from ancient Scandanavia, hence the round shields and shape of their helmets. And just like the Vikings, they were absolutely fearless in the face of death, and were not afraid to die in battle. @@mandalorian1994 I have heard they were based on the Germanic people.
@@ano_nym They're based on the Anglo-Saxons (the English). The Anglo-Saxons come from the Jutland peninsula (modern day Denmark) and were kin to the Norse. The Norse and English languages in the tenth century were mutually intelligible (to an extent), both peoples lived in (and fought over) modern day England, and both worshipped the same gods and goddesses before they converted to Christianity. J.R.R. Tolkien was a linguistics professor with a special interest in Germanic languages, especially Old English and Gothic. He made his own translation of Beowulf (which I believe was only published after his death), and many of the names of the Rohirrim come from Old English (while other characters are drawn from the Old Norse language). J.R.R. Tolkien longed for a world where the Anglo-Saxons were great horseman (in history, they did not have an extensive cavalry culture) that repelled the Normans and prevented the Norman conquest. In the Rohirrim, he created this.

Oh, that's how Cavalry works again. Kind of forgot after seeing the Dothraki charge into darkness.
Nah but in fairness the whites were probably stacked up like a wall and compeltly screwed their momentum
honestly though this scene for all it's pure awesome has the opposite problem that the dothraki charge has, and that's that this cavalry charge gets FAR further into the enemy than their momentum should allow. the orcs are more like blades of grass despite even setting up spears in the front. Charging head first into a formation of spear men is one of the dumbest things cavalry can do
that rant aside, this charge and the dothraki ones are equally awesome to me for opposite reasons; this ones builds hope, the dothraki one crushes it
@J E yeah that's not what I'm talking about. what I'm talking about is how when they're already in amongst the orcs, said orcs get trampled like nothing. Granted trampling something the size of a human on a horse the horse is obviously gonna win, but it will at least slow the horse down a LITTLE bit, and given how many orcs there are...
just look at 2:59 in the video, that's what I was talking about. ramming into a demoralized enemy is still ramming into an enemy, yet there they are trampling them with absolutely zero loss of momentum.
on a side-note don't misunderstand me, I still LOVE this scene, I even once wrote a paper on it in high school because of how awesome it is. All I'm saying is that it suffers from the single real flaw in the lord of the rings trilogy, and that's that at times it doesn't feel like there's any real danger to the frankly overpowered protagonists.
No this is not how cavarly works, a horse can't just run full speed over a 100 orcs.

Thank you Peter Jackson & crew for the greatest, most epic charge & battle in cinema history
Today I have seen, in 3 weeks, all 3 movies of the Lord of the Rings in the cinema, and I can say that it has been the best decision I have made in my life to celebrate the 20th anniversary of this perfect and wonderful saga.

GOT thats how you make a battle scene.
U dumb
Wedge It’s the truth dumbass
GoT knows how to make a great battle scene. They just kinda failed the Battle of Winterfell. Battle of the Bastards is top tier and the battle on the Wall is pretty good.
Maikeru Uchiha90 must admit GoT does know how to make a battle scene, especially visually, this is shown during all of them, it’s just as of late the writing has been on the weaker side which has angered people, such as the amount of plot armour and conclusions to particular characters. Whereas in the earlier seasons when they had the source material of Martin’s books, the storylines were (a majority of the time) strong and characters weren’t protected by such factors
Yeah yeah yeah they know how to do it but it will never be the same as Lord of the Rings...
A cavalry charge like this did happen, but was actually 3x the size. During the Battle of Vienna, the Ottoman force numbering 150,000 was besieging the city and 16,000 defenders. A relief force numbering 75,000 arrived a month after the siege had began and immediately attacked the Ottomans in the rear. The Polish King then led 18,000 horsemen straight down into the demoralized Ottoman ranks. I don’t know if Tolkein took inspiration from this battle, but there are definitely similarities. I’m glad this movie exists so we can see what a charge of that magnitude was like
Every time I see this scene I get chills. Nothing will ever top this, cinema peaked here.

General Billdog another thing I love about LOTR is the extras get some individual screen time and a bit of character. In too many shows the extras are a background group that ebb and flow to emphasize the hero.
Here we see individuals being led.

Imagine being an orc, raiding the city, and then a couple thousand dudes on horses ride over a hill and start screaming *DEATH!* and then charge at you with no concern for if they live or not.
6000 spears!
Darn, even those heartless creatures felt true fear
When everyone is there to kill. Make sure you're the one doing the killing. Your side that is.
They're not dudes. They're men.
The Rohirrim: The Horse Lords. Bred for War.
Just imagine it.
You're in the front line of the King's Company, facing down more orcs than you've ever seen while Gondor burns. Your horse starts to feel heavy and everyone around you starts shaking. You've probably got a family back home that you will likely never see again. Your mount keeps bucking beneath you and shifting, its anxious cries twisting with those around you. You can't distinguish friends amidst the mass of Riders surrounding you. Then suddenly, Theoden's sword hits your spear as he rides down the line and you're snapping back to attention. You may not make it back to your family, but this is for them either way. If Gondor is lost, then they'll be next. You face almost certain death and the horns blare in your ear. Then you move. Slow at first before you can get into a gallop. Because you dont know if you are doing the right thing, Your King is beside you, and the orcs are coming closer and closer, and still you know Death is on your side.
Then you ride for ruin, and the world's ending.

This was less than 10,000 Rohan riders against 200,000 orcs.
In Game of Thrones it was suppose to be 40,000 Dothraki against 100,000, what we got was more or less 5,000 Dothraki riders vs darkness and shadows
Ikr. I was so confused by how little Dothraki there were compared to the insane number that charged the Lannister army. This GoT season has been stupidly weak. I almost thought that the dragon didn't die because it was just so unbelievably ridiculous. Like how did they not notice the ships? How did they get that good at shooting? How did they get that many arrows? How did they reload that fast? The show definitely took a nose-dive this season. I'm definitely missing the original Starks and Lannister conflict.
They were at least 200K undead.
It was actually 6,000 of the Rohirrim against 100-150k of orcs, Southrons, and Easterlings.
@@Anonymous-or2nz According to the wiki, it was 100k wights, 12 white walkers, 2 giants, and a dragon. That and plus whoever was killed.
I think they said around 14 k dothraki were present at the Battle of winterfell
Greatest trilogy of all time and the greatest battle you'll ever see on screen. So much despair, so much heroism. Listen to the music in this scene from start til the end, the sound of the war horns, warshouts with the sunrise in the background, the sun itself pushing away the darkness in the sky - so beautiful, so epic. A true masterpiece, forever timeless! I can't believe these movies are 20 years old.
