    I agree with you 100% on everything you stated. I have a ‘16 1794 tundra and pull a 35ft 8000 trailer thru all kinds of terrain our great country has with zero issues. This thing was made to work. Gas sucks but you get what you pay for. Peace of mind, comfort and reliability. I’ve always said it’s a “3/4 truck” just because of how beasty this thing is built

      @@kenj.8897 I kindly disagree with you. Proper trailer brakes do exactly what they’re meant to do and proper weight distribution is key. Toyota overbuilds their vehicles like you wouldn’t believe, with the exception of leaf springs. I get around the same mpg as all the diesels in my campsite, with a difference of minus $.75 - $1/gal and thousands less in maintenance and repair costs. I don’t have turbos going out and complicated fuel system to worry about. And power is definitely not an issue my friend. Torque comes at a higher rpm but that’s fine with me, because as I said these motors and transmissions are overbuilt more so than any other truck on the road. Do your research, pal

      I have a 2016 tundra an love it, but my Jayco 263 RBS, just seems squirrely. I do have a fiberglass shell. I have an and a bedslide, which may be taking several hundred pounds off my cargo capacity. I use an equilizer hitch but just feels like my trailer is too tongue heavy to be stable on rough roads, etc. I just added airbags, so now need to experiment with that and pray it does the trick. I love my Tundra, lol

    Well...we're bros. 16 years ago I bought a 2006 Tacoma new, put 165K on it with no issues at all, but had to upgrade for safe towing reasons when I bought the 26' travel trailer. I had such a great experience w/ the Tacoma that I felt confident staying w/ Toyota and upgrading to the 2018 Tundra 5.7L V8 (w/ 38 gal tank you mentioned on yours) specifically to tow my TT.
    I love everything about my Tundra including the LED headlights & for lights, the roominess, the comfortable seats, the blind spot monitor, the dynamic cruise control, and the overall design of everything that went into this ½ ton. For an SR5, this thing is loaded w/ a lot of safety features.
    I did spend months going back and forth to buy the proven 5.7L motor in the proven 2nd gen config...OR wait for the V6 turbo version expected 2 or 3 years later. I am SO glad I bought this truck! The new V6 turbo ½ ton Tundras w/ the 288 volt DC battery assist do not get any better mileage than my 2018. My crewmax gets 17 mpg when the bed is empty and I'm not towing. To your point: I bought this particular truck for towing my travel trailer across the country, over the Rocky Mountains, etc., NOT for great gas mileage....it's a truck!

      ​@KEdRevs also if you beef up your tires to continental or michelin 10ply you'll not only get less tire squat, you'll get longer lasting tires cause it does from 12/32 to 14/32 tread. 70k mile warranty. That with air bags with really beef up payload and tongue weight

    All it needs is 1 extra long leaf in the rear suspension and the tundra is officially 3/4 ton truck that can handle 2500 lb payload every day. It needs 4 leafs + overload to be a great work truck. They made that suspension for comfort. Do not use air bags they restrict the travel too much and are not designed for continuous support like leaf springs.
    Just add 1 more leaf long leaf not a short leaf but long one that will support the longest leaf. Also made of 5160 steel which is quality steel good for 10 years if you use cheap steel then that is good for 1 or 2 years

    I've got a 2020 TRD Pro and added the transmission cooler with a fan. It makes a world of difference.
    I've posted before on your videos about using the transmission in manual mode which allows the convertor to lock up better and faster. I believe running in manual mode does more for cooling than anything else.
    Love the videos. Hopefully you keep the truck and see how long it'll go.

      I always enter shift mode on long grades or hills. Typically S4. But long flat streches and I'm in D with Tow/Haul on. As I document the truck, I'm trying to follow the Toyota's recs as close as possible

      While towing, I'm using the manual mode to select gears based on my acceleration needs & incline. Also helpful in just keeping it in 5th gear rather than it keep downshifting back and forth from 5/6. I tow an enclosed car trailer once in a while, approx 8500lbs w/ car tools.

      Yep, 4th is direct drive and keeps the convertor locked. As long as the rpm's are good you should be good.
      I always keep an eye on my convertor and pan Temps. If it's optimum they'll be within a few degrees of each other once it balances out.

      Yep I installed a separate Transmission cooler in my 2020 TRD PRO also. Not that I know it needed it but I just wonder why toyota discontinued it in the 19-21 models. I haven't towed heavy since installing it but unladen I rarely go above 200 degrees Fahrenheit.

    Great video. I recently purchased a 2012 Tundra 4x4 extended cab with a maching leer topper. 250k miles but almost all interstate. Zero rust. I truly love this truck in platinum silver with the 5.7 V8. David

    Completely agree that your truck is a great tow vehicle. Also completely agree that axle weight ratings are far more important than payload. The CAT scale numbers when fully loaded for travel are what tell the story. I tow my Cougar with my 2015 F150 Ecoboost and when fully loaded for travel (including my wife in the passenger seat) I am about 200# under the front axle rating, about 100# under the rear axle rating and about 2000# under the trailers axle ratings. Set the proper tire pressures from there based on the tires and the load (not based on the stickers) and hit the road. My truck also does about 2/3rds of its miles while towing, and I have had no complaints at all. Having said all that, I love your truck. For some reason the max tow rating was showing 9800# or something silly like that, but I am sure that yours is at least as capable as my F150 with max tow. Tundra was high on my list for my next truck until they redesigned it....not so sure anymore, unless I find a good 2021 or prior. Fully expect to have my current truck for a few more years though. Looks fine, does the job great, and yep it is still the 6 speed transmission, but I cannot see the issue with that. Works great. As always, safe travels....

    Agreed! I have a ‘18 TSS Offroad 4Wd and live in Western Colorado. Almost anywhere I haul my 5000 lb trailer involves climbing and descending a mountain pass. I did add Roadmaster Active Suspension to my rear leafs. Helps stability and helps the leaf springs. And of course a Weight Distribution Hitch. 😊

    OMGOSH! Thank you for your inputs on towing. I'm looking at a 2021 X-Series CrewMax and I want to take the family on cross country camping trips.
    The trans cooling system I knew, but thebtouch screen with the rear view camera anytime is great and adding the airbags I will DEFINITELY be doing. Thanks again!

    I had a 2017 Limited Crewman 2wd. Great truck. I pull a 6500lb boat with no issues. I recently bought a 2022 1794 2wd i will tell you it will tow circles around the 2017. The 20 percent increase in torque is really noticiable. That coupled with the 10 speed auto it will sit at 2500 rpms at 67 mph. Boost is only applied when going up a hill. The trans temp is no different towing vs towing. I know people are worried about turbo's and boost but these engines are designed from the ground up to take the boost pressure. Loved the 2017 but the 2022 is a leap forward.

      I''ll do back to back days at that speed for 1000 miles and 15 hous. Try that for 15 kmiles a year and tell me how good you 3rd set of turbos are, because that's the ones you'll be on.

      Lmao, your new tundra isn’t a truck anymore, it’s a sissy car. Funny you say it will tow circles around the previous gen. Shows you have no clue about truck specs. Not to mention how ugly the new gen is, the 5.7s will outlive the v6 turbo for years to come.

      @@kedrevs4037I think the turbos will last. Toyota uses a commercial standard not passenger car standard for the truck turbos but for the money I’ll keep my 5.7L. I’m pretty sure my co worker has the original turbo on his 5.9L Cummins and the body rusted away a long time ago.

    I just towed with a 2010 Tundra Limited a 14 ft encloded trailer with a total 7000lbs weight from Charleston West Virginia to Chicago Illinois and was plesantly surprised how smooth it went. Also my gas mileage did not changed much and got an average of 14mpg mostly highway. However, i used mostly the tow haul mode and drove no more than 65mph.

    I just brought the exact truck.. but 2021. I don't do any towing, so the Trans cooler isn't a concern. Great review.. Love it so far.

    This video and the comments helped boost my total confidence in my 2018 Tundra on being able to tow a 26' 7000 lbs boat. My pooper will still be puckered tight though. Thanks everyone. Now for the new brakes, new tires and a new boat. And im definitely looking into the plug and play touch screen.

      Remember the Tundra pulled the Space Shuttle at 280,000lbs across the bridge over the 405 by LAX. I did see a video where Toyota was testing ahead of time and they pulled 320,000lbs of concrete block to make sure they did it without issue. That Tundra sat at the California Science Centre for a few years.

    Love the video! Love my 2020 tundra. Fun fact about mpg go to fuelly and saw real world data on the 2022 and up. You’ll see it’s only 2.5 mpg better, not worth it in my opinion. Love my 5.7

    I have a 2017 Limited double cab, and it tows my 5,000 lb travel trailer with no issues. I replaced the stock Dunlop car tires with BFG K2 all terrains, put Bilstein 5100 shocks and Sumo springs on it, tows like a champ!

      My KO2’s went so far out of balance after 18,000 miles I thought the brakes had come loose. Not very happy with BFG.

    I agree with everything except fuel mileage. For me 10ish towing 3 ATVs and 2 dirtbikes and 13's mixed driving. I have '21 SR5 4X4 with 15k miles bought used last June. Probably will change oil to my go to Royal Purple 0-20 to see if that helps.
    I've added trans cooler, airbags, and TRD rear sway bar. Looking to add TRD or Borla dual exhaust, TRD skid plate, Catylitic Converter shield, and possibly TRD intake.
    Truck is phenomenal.

      Yes, my 2017 got 11Mpg towing my Escape 19 fibreglass camper (round like an Airstream) and it was only 3500lbs. That’s towing around the Great Lakes region which is only 800’ above sea level.

    The new Toyota Tundras do have the same transmission cooler. It is located in the passenger side turbo intake. I wish I could attach a picture.

      I would to see one as well. My understanding is that the have the standard cooling system, but no auxiliary specifically for the transmission. This is also true on 19-21.

    I wish Toyota would put a Hino diesel in the Tundra. I had a 4.7L in an older Tundra and absolutely loved it. Thinking of trading my 2014 TTUE FJ and pick up a 2021 Tundra... FJ won't haul the travel trailer that I'm wanting.... Great video. thanks, RT

    Great technical video. Thanks. Was surprised to learn that my 2011 Sequoia Limited has 130lbs more payload than your 2018 Tundra. Agree that the limiting factor is suspension. Your air bags take the leaf-springs out as a limiting factor - excellent. My most limiting factor is tongue weight. Would love to hear your thoughts on tongue weight in a future video.

I also want to understand why the 2018 Tundra has a Gross Combined of 16,000 lbs with front and rear axel limits of 4,000 and 4,150 respectively while my 2011 Sequoia has significantly less combined with same or greater axel limits (13,500, 4,000, 4,280 respectively). Drivetrain and frame are same, I believe. If anyone has insight, I will be grateful their sharing.

      ​@@kedrevs4037 My Freedom Express 20SE trailer has a tongue weight of 512 lbs and my EAZ-Lift WDH comes with 600 lb bars. Overall the rear of my Tundra sags 1 inch and does not shift to the front, really pleased with the sway control of this system as well!

      I used a Alpine Halo9 ilx-f309 with the appropriate gear to scan the OBD2. I have switched to a scanguage 3, about $300 direct to the OBD2 port.

      Haha, I was wondering if anyone would recognize that. It is the seldom visited Kolob Canyons section of Zion National Park. Only about 5% of Zion visitors go to that section. Unlike the remainder of the park, during peak season you can drive to the lookouts and you can do it in an RV. IT's about 5ish miles long and at the end there is a very large lot that you can turn around at.

    Do you have videos of what weight distribution hitch you are using? I have a 2016 and struggling to comfortably tow my Jayco 263 RBS, around 6,300 lbs empty, 700 lb tongue weight empty. It pulls it fine but just hard to get comfortable over 45 mph, on back roads, and rough roads. It just gets a little wiggly in the rear, hard to explain. I have a fiberglass shell and bedslide, so several hundred pounds off of my total cargo capacity.

      I use a Curt WDH system with the sway control arm, round bars. Been happier with it than fastway e2 or equalizer friction systems.

    I have a 2013 Tundra , great truck but unfortunately it has a ridiculously small tank( 28 gallons ) and range sucks . But with the prices of new trucks i will drive it till it gives up which im thinking will be at least over 300K's if i maintain it well

    After waiting 2yrs for the 22 Tundra to be released, and then the 23 hoping they would fix some quality issues, I'm now going back to square one and buying a 2021 Tundra Platinum. Although this video was about towing, I wanted to state that I don't plan on towing anything around but myself. I've been a Toyota / Lexus fan boy (at least up until recent releases), due to owning a trouble free 2005 LS430. I'm 6'7" and want a RELIABLE, QUALITY, large cabin truck I can easily fit in. I don't drive a lot so I don't care about the 13mpg avg. Also, I refuse to pay $75k for a covid era manufactured pickup.

      At your height, I think you'd find the new Tundra ideal for your height. The old one won't be a problem.

      @@kedrevs4037 Rear cabin in 23 is 8" shorter, so leg room is far less for all people. Plus, the full length moon roof cuts out 1.5" from roof height.

      Smart move they ruined the new Tundra imo it looks horrible and wimpy with it's small tires and low ride height.Love my 2010 RCSB 5.7 TRD never selling it.

    Weird as my 22 Tundra out tows my 2019 all day every day. Much smoother shifting, better power and better gas mileage. Loved the 19 gas hog but for towing no contest.

      Pulling is one thing. Short distances and it's not a big deal. Motortrend overheated that '22 offroading...in a PRO! Just don't think V6 or turbo would stand up to back-to-back days at 75 mph for 15 hours very long. But I'd love someone to prove me wrong.

      That small engine and those turbos won’t wont last the same as a v8 engine.

      That v6 will probably only last for about 50k towing before it blows, trust me. Might feel better but ultimately it’s goin to damage the engine. Good luck.

      Depends as much on shape as weight, but personally I'm not comfortable beyons about 8-8,500 lbs with any half ton

      Depends on how loaded can be anywhere from about 22-32 psi. About 22 with nothing in bed and no fluids or load in RV. 32 with bed loaded and full water tanks. I set it to get the right height for the ball. Took a while to play with it.

    I have a 08 . Rate for 10,500. I put air bags on it years ago. I tow a 28 foot toy hauler with a can am hd10 limited. Fully loaed its pushing 10 thousand pounds. Another big thing that's makes it much better is the hitch set up. I run a husky equalizer with a brake. That brake definitely helps in the wind or even around big rigs. I have no reason to get a 3/4. She is a keeper.

    I would love to send you a pic of my 2020 Tundra with the Casita……after 32 years of LE………about to retire and hit the road…😊…..I’ve done sway bar, TRD exhaust, cat theft skid plate, ARE topper, and K & N filter…..might see you in Utah…??…..it’s on the bucket list……I tell everyone that I bought the motor….and the truck came with it…….

      Awesome setup. Southern Utah is the most Unique area in my opinion. Here is the Loop, camp on BLM land in Valley of the gods ( can do monument valley, mexican hat, Goosenecks state park, and Moki Dugway). Head north on 191 to Moab. Stay anywhere - tons of BLM or RV park. Arches, Canyonlands, Dead Horse Point are all right there ( and so many other things). Want to feel like you have the place to yourself camp on BLMs Windwhistle Campground south of Moab. It’s on Needles Overlook Road. Take needles overlook to the end (25 miles on well paved gravel road and you’ll have views of Canyonlands from Minor overlook and Anticline overlook all to yourself.
      Now the most important part: Head back down south on 191 just past blanding and Turn west on Utah 95. Get ready for the best 250 miles in America. The first 120 take you through Bears Ears National Monument. Several fantastic sites and short hies in Bears Ears. If you’ve never been there, it is impossible to describe. There are developed establishment for the next 130 miles until it becomes the Utah 24 in Hanksville. The entire road is brand new and almost no traffic. You want mind stopping for a night on BLM land. Once it becomes the Utah 24 keep heading east and you drive right through Capitol Reef NP. Perhaps the most underrated NP we have. For shear beauty, I would rank it ahead of Arches and Csnyonlands. Stop at any of these licals for days at a time and you won’t be disappointed. From Torrey, Utah at the eastern edge of capitol reef, head south on the Utah 12 toward Bryce Canyon. There are several BLM spots and campgrounds near both Torrey and Bryce. After Bryce fish the last few miles easterly on the Utah 12 throgh Red Canyon toward Hwy 89. South on 89 about to hours to the My Carmel junction and head west Toward Zion canyon. Entering Zion from the east through the mount carmel tunnel is a must. It is stunningly dramatic. Three days mimimum in zion if you’ve never been and for one of those make the drive over to Kolob canyons, which is the most northern drive through section of Zion. Leave Zion back onto Hwy 89 south. Page is 2 hours south. Horseshoe bend is a must in Page, as is an overnight at Lone rock beach if Lake powell ever recovers. Pricey, but lower Antelope Canyon is another must between about 10:30 and 1 pm is best. Finish in Page and head south on 89 again to Grand Canyon NP. Turn west at the circle to Desert View drive. This is for the south rim, congested but better views than north rim, and definitely best entrance/ exit from the park.

    Another great video as always. The more videos I see of the 2022+ Tundra and actually see them on the road and in parking lots, I thank the good Lord above that I got a 2021 and did not wait. I would have been so upset if I had missed out on the 2.5 gen Tundra.
    I've already put 33,200'ish miles on mine in about 18 months since I am a regional manager for my company and drive all over Texas and Oklahoma, and the 600+ range on the tank is such a nice feature to have especially when you are on a schedule and cannot afford to stop.
    A lot of times I have to go 6-7 straight hours to get to an appointment on time and I can do that with the Tundra. All I need is a wide mouth water bottle for bathroom breaks and I'm good to go! :)
    By the way my TRD Pro Double cab gets 15 city and 17-18 highway all day long, and that is with a set of Nitto Ridge Grapplers 285/70/18 (34's). My previous truck which was a 2009 F-150 5.4L V8 Lariat got 12-13 city and 16-17 highway and was 80 hp less with stock tires.

    Somehow the car shown between 1:28 and 1:39 will still out-tow, out-haul and out-muscle (both in terms of power *and* torque) its 2nd gen equivalent any day of the week while being significantly better on gas.

      If you don't tow regularly or heavy, I wouldn't worry about it. If you do tow a lot, aftermarket auxiliary trans cooler.

      Change right when I get home from long trip, and usually right before I leave again, unless there is less than a couple thousand on the new oil. Ends up being between 3 and 7K.

    The only thing that can think of that affects payload capacity are accessories like sidesteps and tonneau covers. I have Toyotas tri-fold hard cover and I’ve taken it off before to put my atv in the bed. That cover is pretty heavy.
    (Edit) even with my 600 lb atv back there, the truck doesn’t even squat…like at all.

      That depends on the model you have. I have a TRD Pro double cab with the Fox Shox and it squats pretty bad especially when I get to capacity which is around 1,000 lbs. Granted, I've had 1,700 in bedrock in the back and it squated really bad but still carried her home about 15 miles with no problem.

      I've seen mine squat pretty well when full hauling a bed full of mulch before air bags, but I was only traveling 2 miles. But I am still far more concerned about approaching GRAWR than Payload total.

      I think that they are darn near mechanically identical. Not many buyers reviewing them yet, but the biggest knock seems to be very poor interior space. Especially third row/ luggage

    I agree, still like the older tundra than the 22+. My 15 limited 4wd has 1300 payload but it only has the 26gal gas tank but I love it. Interesting you don’t pay attention to payload, so what’s more important? Axle rating?

      I'm always within about 150 lbs of max payload, but yes the GRAWR and % tongue weight/ gross tongue weight are far more important in my opinion. Those are numbers that I pay closest attention to for safe towing.

    Toyota under rates the Tundra for some reason. My wife’s 2021 Subaru Crosstrek has a max-payload capacity of 905lbs. My 20221 Toyota Tundra 1794 edition with the TRD-Off-road 4x4 package has a max-payload rating of 1185lbs. You’re telling me my big bad Tundra can only handle 280lbs more of payload???

      IMHO it is to keep dummies like me from putting 2,000 lbs in it which would definitely blow the shocks, but hopefully only go over the "max payload" by a couple of hundred pounds which is no biggie. Funny you mention the Subaru my Honda Odyssey has a payload of 1,400 lbs and its a 3.5L V6 van!

    Toyota really should have kept the 5.7 as an option on the 3rd gen. Hopefully they will realize the error in their ways and bring it back! Sure the 5.7 would be even better paired to a 10spd. I appreciate that about Ford still offering a tried and true N/A V8 alongside the EcoBlowsup.

    Love my Toyotas, have a couple including the last V8 made. My employer bought me a 2023 Ford F150 3.5 EB. Anyone who tells you the 3.5 EB pulls like a V8 is a complete liar...its much better, actually, way better at elevation. Pull heavy loads weekly in the mountains and this truck kills it everyday. No matter how hard you try, the 5.7L isn't coming back.

      @@kedrevs4037 Call all the bluffs you want, an NA V8 truck isn't in the same league as the 3.5 EB. At 5000', your truck isn't producing as much torque as a Chevy 2.7L 4 cylinder turbo (engine in the midsize Colorado...) Climb from there and the power gap just continues to grow at an alarming rate. No bluffs, just fact. Less negativity and assumptions, more driving...try towing with a 10 speed turbo truck before you judge, it will be an eye opener. That's what opened my eyes after years of V8 half tons. This EB pulls like a turbo deisel (owned one), not an NA V8...it has a couple turbos and makes power in a whole different place that provides a lot better pull, especially at elevation, where I live and pull everyday.     I've owned a a 2013 Tundra for 10 years and after I bought my new Tundra IFORCE Max, I can say the new Tundra is a huge upgrade. I tow my 10,000lbs camper with no issues up here in the rocky mountains. My 2013 tundra was slow, the grade braking wasn't great and the transmission temps got hot. I have non of those issues with my new Tundra.

    The only thing that ruins this truck for toying is the 6 speed and the TRD exhaust. I have a 2020 TRD pro with a supercharger. I’d pay 10k or more for a 10 speed conversion. 3,000+ rpm’s going a cross the Great Plains with a headwind listening to what sounds like a motorboat wide-open sucks. Using cruise control is a must and it doesn’t work well while towing. I don’t care what you people say 14 hours of modulating a gas pedal is extremely fatiguing.

    dealer refused to install one and told me if I did it anyway I d void my powertrain warranty

      The 3year/36 warranty on that truck has almost no chance of being needed. It is the most refined version of the statistically most reliable truck ever built. I would do it anyway.
      If you have another warranty issue, can't believe that would hold up. But in that case, I would use it until 3year/36. Do a complete flush and add the cooler at exactly 36k.

      @@kedrevs4037 I wanted to use 5w30 motor oil instead of 0w20 and a dealership mechanic warned me that the dealership sends oil for testing as soon as someone comes in for a warranty repair and will deny repair if anything other than 0w20 is used. I have no doubt they d deny a tranny repair if I installed a cooler. I m just going to wait, not towing at all in the meantime.

      @@CheekyMonkey888 They can't deny warranty for installing a cooler unless you do something wrong installing it which causes damage. A cooler only makes things easier on the transmission so actually would prolong the life of the Tranny. I installed one on my 2020 TRD PRO at somewhere around 10K and no issues as I'm now at 30K.

    Dangerous and also illegal to tow too much
    Don’t try to convince yourself or others that your numbers match
    If you are in an accident towing too much your insurance is null and void as well as your warranty.
    Check the hitch weight restrictions.
    1185 lbs cargo capacity, oh my god!!!!!!
