    I left the RAF the year he joined! I loved my time when we had Harriers, Phantoms, Buccaneers and when we took delivery of the brand new Tornado F2/F3, it’s a very sad moment when they retire an Aircraft you remember being delivered new. These interviews however bring back great memories.

    My slightly older brother’s favourite aircraft is the gloster meteor but I’ve got two and they are the hawker hunter and the sea harrier and they are because as an air cadet in 1977 I had along with the the rest of 102 sqdrn air cadets spent a week at raf north luffenham and we had a day at raf wittering and the highlight for me was watching no1 sqdrn practicing short take offs on a ski jump. I ended up having a 20 minute chat with a raf officer who was in charge of the raf fire brigade about the Land Rover regarding the bar pressure and psi rate coming out of the nozzle at the fire hose. I did get what he told me about the smaller the hole made for more pressure at the tip , anyhoo thank you sir for a cracking insight into your career. 🙏👍

      @@goodputin4324 I like the Typhoon more, and the Royal Airforce is more versatile with more legacy. But don't get me wrong, I really wish to join the Royal Netherlands Air Force, but it's just something about the Royal Air Force that captivates me.

    I've only recently discovered your channel & podcasts, but am really enjoying these.

    Paul has the type of flying experience that transends an era. How many Spitfire pilots have flown an F-16, Eurofighter, Harrier, and Chipmunk? Paul is a fortunate member of a small group of pilots who lived their dream fully.

    @AircrewInterview Pretty sure Dick Bong (highest scoring American fighter pilot of all time) first used the term "climbs like a homesick angel" when describing the P-38 Lightning

    I've never really thought about it, but do canards have controls? or is that all computer operated?

      Canards in Typhoon are control surfaces used to pitch the aircraft, controled by fly by wire computer ( with pilot input).

    F22 in attack formation: come in fast following each other at more than 761.65 MPH. Keep formation following. We look like a single small Piper airplane!

    I cannot comprehend how the angular momentum of an idling engine can still be that strong. There must be a lot of moving weight. If it is an issue at idle it must be major at higher RPM.
    If you push the throttle, will it flip the aircraft?

      Actually, what he experienced is the torque from the propeller. Newton's 3 law of action->reaction and the the reason helicopters need torque compensation. Basically every centerline Propeller aircraft has this problem. For instance if i remember correctly in the P51 it was normal to trim the rudder 8° to the right for take off, to counteract the propeller torque.

      @@shi01 With the propeller there also is the problem of the air spinning around the airframe at low speed but high thrust.

      poles apart performance wise the typhoon is far superior to so called "legacy" aircraft ie f15,f16,f18

      Mark Cannon - The US Navy has replaced it's older F-18s for the newer F-18 Super Hornets and F-35s. While the Typhoon was designed to be an air to air fighter, the F-18 was designed to be a multi role fighter that is designed to operate off a carrier. Also the F-18 Super Hornet, F-15E and some of the upgraded F-15C's have more advanced radars. The F-15E and F-18 Super Hornet are multi role fighters that have more capabilities than the Typhoon. Yes the Typhoon is a better dogfighter and has some very advanced sensors, but saying that it is far superior isn't technically true depending on what kind of mission it needs to perform. The Typhoon still doesn't have it's new Captor E AESA radar, which even if it did would still not be as capable as the F-18 Super Hornets APG-79, F-22's APG-77 and especially the F-35's APG-81 AESA radar. The Typhoon only has a very limited air to ground capability.
      I'm not saying the Typhoon is bad or anything because it isn't, it is a very powerful and advanced fighter. But it's biggest issue is that it is VERY expensive and for that price you could get a more advanced fighter in the F-35 that is way more capable and can perform all types of missions. That is the reason why the UK is buying the F-35.

      @@mississippirebel1409 the radar issue you mention is quite correct however when the eurofighter gets its new radar coupled to its performance trumps pretty much all there is in an air dominance role ground attack is a secondary concern the eurofighter was designed for air dominance

      Mark Cannon - I'm sure the new E-Captor radar improve it's performance but it's highly unlikely that it's radar will be as good as the ones in the F-22 and F-35. It definitely won't be as good as the F-22 when it comes to air superiority.
      When it comes to AESA radar technology the US is way ahead of everyone and has way more experience building them. Russia and China are just now starting to produce and use them in their best fighters. Also the Eurofighter was suppose to get it's new radar years ago but the makers of the new radar have had a lot of issues with it. Honestly I won't be surprised if the Eurofighter never gets it's because countries like the UK are now using the F-35.

      @@mississippirebel1409 at the end of the day it comes down simply to who has the deepest pockets to who gets what and trust me the eurofighter with the new radar for the UK is as good as it gets name me a better air dominance fighter bar the f22 there isn't one

      @@thefrecklepuny Yeah, Rafale looks much nicer but it's also about radar cross-section. Obvious Rafale was designed with some thought to reducing it (at least from the front sector), whereas it seems like Typhoon engineers were told to design an aircraft with the maximum possible RCS while still being able to go supersonic. It's just weird. Also Rafale now has AESA, and it was designed with a side stick (the right way to do it). And it has longer range. But yes, Typhoon is very powerful...

      @@KRGruner the Typhoon has the lowest frontal RCS of any front line fighter with the exception of the F22 and F35. The Rafael is very good looking and puts on a fantastic air display, but it is underpowered at high altitude, it can't super cruise with weapons, and its radar has a small antenna due to its slim (but very pretty) nose cone, limiting its range and scan angle. The Typhoons R2 Captor E has its AESA antenna in a movable gimble, giving it much wider scan angles and range. The new Striker 2 HMD is also a game changer.

      @@robertblay9179 LOL... So "the Typhoon has the lowest frontal RCS of any frontline fighter..." Please, quote the source for this, it should be amusing. I'm guessing you have no idea how RCS reduction works (hint: right angles are really, really bad, and so are traditional gimballed radar antennas). Also note the Rafale has an AESA today, the Typhoon does not and it's unknown when I will ever get one (yeah, they keep talking the talk, but I don't see any actual results). The only significant advantage the Typhoon has compared to Rafale is indeed the HMD. But then again, everyone except the Rafale has an equivalent or better (except the F-22, but that's coming). Typhoon can't supercruise in any useful air-to-ground configuration, and even in an air-to-air role, it's nowhere close to what the F-22 can do. It's just done through brute force. Many air forces have picked the Rafale over the Typhoon, and there is a reason. Typhoon has only been sold to traditional UK buyers, except for Austria, but it turns out they don't like them and have been trying to get rid of them. Switzerland also picked Rafale over Typhoon (but then that competition was cancelled). Maybe they know something you don't...

    It would be interesting to see a Typhoon pilot compare the kinematics to that of the F35 after flying both. I simply cannot buy the story that the F35 has superior kinematics because of low drag, when it is significantly heavier than the F15 and with 20% lesser thrust. The Typhoon has higher kinematics than the F15.

      In training fights the F35 scored 101:0 ratio against typhoons and Rafales in BVR (beyond visual range) when they changed it to within visual range the score was more equal when typhoons were able to out manoeuvre the f35, it was made for long range engagements that's where it's good at but it's also meant to be a jack of all trades for the 3 branches of the military 👍

    Loving these interviews, but disappointed about his comment that people in the military don't appreciate what QRA pilots do (It's around the 5:30 mark).
    Having served for a number of years, deployed to Afghanistan several times, Libya/Southern Italy, Cyprus all in support of air operations, I'd suggest that pilots don't appreciate what a lot of the ground crew do. His "you cannot fail at that role" is exactly the same as literally everyone else. Aircraft mechanics fail at their role - dead pilot. Comms don't do their role, everything stops working. Armourer doesn't do their job - bomb doesn't drop or missile doesn't fire.
    We all did our jobs and we all understood the importance of each others'. If anything, the public and the military appreciate the job of a pilot more than anyone and it's the rest who go unnoticed and it's more often than not the pilots that don't appreciate it. Libya for example, we were in 3 weeks before the pilots were and we left 5 weeks after they'd gone home. They were limited to the amount of hours they could work due to flight hours, meanwhile my team were regularly pulling 20+ hour shifts to ensure everything was working for them. They stayed in a posh hotel 10 minutes from the airfield - we stayed about 40 minutes away, which we had to drive twice per day after working ridiculous shifts.
    Shame to hear that coming from someone with so much experience.

    Never have I heard a fighter pilot praise himself so much My God ...plus my friend f-22 could take you out 300 to 400 miles away...but hay I love to Typhoon 😁
