      Glad to see others happy with 1080p. I decided to go 1080p because I would rather upgrade my graphics card in the future to get maximum frames with high graphics settings than feel forced to run at a native 2k.

      @@jericosha2842 Also higher than native resolutions can do the trick with 1080p monitors and/or Anti Aliasing plus sharpening stuff on top (reshade), but well with 24"ers you would need to come closer to your screens in order to have a 1:1 feeling like in real, which in turn would make the pixel density more visible.
      I would definitely go for 27"ers.

    I finally made the move to triple 27" monitors. At first I had the monitors 110cm from my eyes. When properly setup I was able to place my car right on the edge of the track when needed, and the in sim elevation changes were incredible. The last hill on Road America in RaceRoom felt like I was climbing a moutain, Brands Hatch's drops felt like being in a roller coaster. Getting close to cars in front of me, the cars filled the screen and sold the illusion of being close.
    As nice as that was, I still had issues with seeing apexes sitting that far back from my screens, so I pull the monitors closer when I am racing. They are now 75cm from my eyes thanks to my Fanatec wheelbase not being able to fit under the monitor.
    I was expecting the same large scale feeling out of the new eye distance, but after using multiple FOV calculators and getting my sims dialed in, things just seem so much smaller. Not only that but placing the car is tougher. I'm giving myself time to adjust to this but I don't feel as confident in this area. I am wondering what happened, and why did the perception of size vary so much if both setups were properly calculated?

    • @davecamyt
      @davecamyt  Год назад +1

      Mathematically there is a correct fov, but don't get too hung up on that. Set up your triples so it looks right to you. If the numbers are off a little don't worry about it 👍

    Great information here that's still, and always will have the most important information for those triple screening. Prices change on monitors and new GPU's come out that can pump more pixels, but in my opinion, the MOST important decision in going with a multi monitor setup (simming, gaming or productivity) is the footprint. My first triple setup was with a Matrox G400 using a Matrox Trip2Go unit decades ago with 26" screens. Much later I had built a very expensive 744 (way before it was common, and using Epic cards and Epic programming). It was 2002 and I had $1400 in Project Magenta software to mimic the instruments with only open sky on the projector screens. Now, I love my HP Reverb G2, but just got back into triples. I have three 4k Samsung 28" Odyssey G70A's. Keeps me under 5' wide on my rig which is a must. Having them just like you do, right over my yoke and so close to my face I can appreciate my 4k screens detail. What got me back into 3 screening was I helped a friend get three 55" Oled TV's going on his setup. Both of us are more into aviation sims. I loved it, but his screens have to be far away. That wasn't on my mind at the time, but weeks late, on my one 28" 4k Odyssey G70A, I was practically drooling at the detail. So much more crisp and detailed on my 28" Computer monitors than his 4k Oleds (I love my 65" Sony Bravia Oled for movies and gaming from afar), plus they're right in front of me so I see soooooo much more than anyone with larger anythings.
    For those interested, I have a 3090 Ti, and I do not run all three in 4k, nor do I run them all at 144hz. I run only the center screen at 4k and the two sides at 1440. Sometimes all three at 1440 due to my beast of a comp screaming. My room gets way too hot and the drop doesn't look any different to me on the side screens, and never notice when all three are at 1440. Had I to do it over again, I would have bought 3 1440 native monitors. I went this route because I already had one of them. Flight simmers that use other screens for their replica pits, such as even Winwings awesome F18 Top Gun Mip that uses three USB 3 screens, need to know that all of these things with resolutions will demand a ton. Even a 4090 trip screens on 4k isn't worth the tradeoff to me for the added heat in the room for 4k vs 2k. Dropping a 4k monitor to 2k gets lots of flak saying it's blurry is nonsense in my experience (since 2k is a fine ration drop from 4k), but having native 2k screens with 240hz refresh for other games would be my choice now since as I said, 4k in MSFS vs 2k isn't worth the tradeoff.

    I agree with Dave 27 is a great size. Going any bigger and you are just going for the wow factor as you are just seeing things that don't matter inside the car. I went with 1080p monitors about 3-4 years ago as my 1070 could run it fine but I wasn't going to be getting enough power to warrant 144hz/1440p

  • @John-ok8ts
    @John-ok8ts 2 года назад +8

    If both monitors have the same res a larger monitor just allows you to place it further away and get the same pixel density and fov. 27 inch monitors are fine but you need them close to your eyes which can give people eyestrain and obv requires then to be above the wheel base.

  • @75Mdb
    @75Mdb 2 года назад +3

    A bigger monitor does not have to be further away from your eyes to keep a 1:1 ratio so everything looks in proportion at all. As long as you adjust the FOV in game the game calculates the correct size to display everything to get the 1:1 ratio no mater how far away the screens are. All that happens if you place a 32" screen where a 27" screen used to be is you get a little more displayed around the edge of where the 27" screen used to be. Everything that's displayed on the 32" screen is exactly the same size as it was on the 27", there's just a bit more displayed around the edges.

    • @davecamyt
      @davecamyt  2 года назад

      Of course it does! If you didn't your fov would be completely unrealistic.

    • @75Mdb
      @75Mdb 2 года назад +1

      The FOV adjustment in game adjusts for this. That's why you can get a larger FOV with larger monitors than you can with smaller monitors - if you keep the distance from your eyes to the centre monitor the same and you don't move the larger monitors further away.
      The whole point of an in game FOV adjuster is to get everything looking 1:1 relative to whatever distance the monitor is away from you.
      You set your games FOV up to the angle that a FOV calculator gives you relative to your screen size and distance from your eyes don't you Dave? Your FOV always looks good anyway.

I am sitting approx 78cm-80cm away from the screen and have no intentions to go bigger as it would look like driving a bus, plus I would have to sit further away. 3x1440p requires quite a GPU to power it in most games. I guess it's fine for simracing as racing games in general are less demanding on the hardware but good luck running that setup in Microsoft Flight Simulator, DCS or IL2 Sturmovik without at least 4090 (3090Ti can't handle it) to get 60fps. For majority of players, 3x1080p is much more viable option IMHO (also 27'' 1080p 165Hz IPS Dell monitors with G-Sync and FreeSync are available brand new at 129GBP). For anyone considering the triple 1440p setup, consider that it's 30% more pixels than single 4k display - check if your current hardware provides you with enough overhead. If you can barely run your game of choice on 4k resolution, it will work even worse on 3 monitors.

    Great video Dave! One thing I would recommend is to stay at 1080p in iRacing. Unfortuntaely iRacing's graphics engine is ancient and is still very much more CPU bound than GPU. Even with my OC'd 11700k and a 3080 and triple 32", It still struggles at some tracks with a full grid to keep 60fps even at triple1080p. I couldn't imagine what that would be like with a triple 1440p! That's the unfortunate old backend coding of iRacing. IMHO, fps is far more important in these types of sims than high resolution and eye candy.

      Higher resolution should barely affect CPU load. The CPU and GPU are doing completely different tasks and resolution is almost completely GPU bound as its the graphics card thats actually pushing the pixels. The CPU is running game engine calculations while the GPU is creating the video output and applying processing and post-processing filters like MSAA, FXAA, Heat Blur, Particles, etc. Increasing resolution should barely affect CPU load, maybe a couple percent at most. I’m running a 3440x1440 ultrawide and on max settings I’m sitting at a constantly locked 142fps with 70% gpu and 20% cpu load (3080ti + 11900k).

      @@bjornna7767 hahaha, no worries buddy, it happens, especially if you have a bunch of RUclips tabs open. I don't think I will see myself getting a 4K 32" inch monitor anytime soon.
      Since I play many older gen consoles on a smaller monitor and the current ones at 1080p on a 24" inch monitor I've decided to stick with those instead of going to a bigger monitor. Playing those on a bigger monitor, the PPI density will be smaller and the games will look pixelated.
      I've also tested this with a 42" inch HDTV that let's me resize the screen image. So at their native resolution, a smaller monitor means more PPI density and looks better. For sim racing or any racing games I don't mind playing on a big HDTV when offline, but for anything online I prefer to use the 24" inch monitor with less lag.

    Regardless of size, you have to set the correct FOV to have the correct perspective. You can have 32” the same distance from your eyes and you have to set it up correctly. Bigger screens absolutely don’t have to be further away. They simply give you a “bigger window to look through”…

Wires breaking inside the plug housing after a number of months are/were a common issue for these connections (happened to me too) if not secured that way. You want 1ms refresh rate, at least 144hz and 1440p especially if you go with 32 inch. You can somehow get away with 1080p if you have 27 inch monitors, but that's already borderline pixelated if you sit at the correct distance for a 180° field of view. Oooof. And as stupid as I am spent a lot money just for a 32" 1440ish to use. Unfortunately I have not the space for triples and a complete rig either but looking at your rig makes me jealous :D
    I can live with one monitor to be honest as i´m adapted to it but when it comes to overtaking in corners you have definately the best option as you can see into the corner and also exit which I cannot see. So i´m bound to the spotter and imagine where that other dude is right or left of me. Thanks for this cool explanation mate :)

    I want to create a triple monitor setup with 3x curved 27" yet you seem to be against curved monitors. Is there a specific reason for that or is it just personal preference?

      For my understanding the problem with curved monitors is that the games don't know about them, they expect to project on a flat screen, so the image is less accurate by default.
      Furthermore, games with true triple monitor support don't just make the image wider but actually render three different perspectives from respective cameras which allows to take the angle between the screens into account. This means you can angle your monitors to such a degree that you get the desired (180°?) FOV with everything looking right. With curved monitors you'd probably want to stick to the angle dictated by the curve's radius, so you have a continuous curve (everything else seems to defeat the point of curved monitors).

    agree, I was thinking to get 32inch but I liked the 27inch more and the 3x4k isn't really there may be the "RTX 5000s" series will be good for 3x 4k

    Curious why you specifically wanted flat monitors after using curved monitors for so long?
    Especially since I may be building a rig in the next few months I was originally planning 27" curved monitors, would be good to know if there was a downside to it. Thanks!

      I couldn't find any flat ones in stock when I bought my curved screens. 👍

      @@davecamyt Thanks for the reply! Any preference between the two, or do you think of them as pretty much the same viewing experience?

    I'm running only a single 27inch but was done with the idea to eventually move to a triple 27inch setup

    I’m looking at buying these myself. How have you got them mounted? There doesn’t seem to be a vesa mount on the pictures I’ve seen!

      Yes they are regular Vesa mounts 👍

    Hey Dave great video! I also have triple screens but they are curved. Why do you like flat screens? Another benefit to 27 inch screens is that its easier on your graphics card for rendering. Hey i noticed your running the simucube dd wheel base. I thought you were a Fanatec man!👍🥃

      I just think it's easier to set up the correct fov with flares, plus they're much easier to line up 😁
      I'm still a Fanatec guy. I just have both now 😁

      Doesnt matter if your screen is 24, 27, 32, 100”…….1440p is still 2560x1440 pixels and 1920x1080 is just that no matter the size.

    Weight is another factor if you are using wall mounts for any of your monitors
