It's the same as the smuggling that we've already got. The players reputation's not low enough to warrant the guards to go out of their way to perform a scan, but they will still scan the player if they get close enough. So they're just keeping their distance.
Why they're pretending to tactically hide behind boxes and everything is anyone's guess. You'd think moving around like this would arouse more suspicion, so just normal social distancing would be enough.

    So a few things:
    - Point defenses can't kill skimmers and won't shoot them. They WILL shoot down missile volleys from the skimmers but against a person on foot I suspect the skimmer's main laser/plasma weapon is more than lethal. (EDIT: Apparently not. They should be, though.)
    - Keep in mind that these outposts are going to be procedurally generated by the galaxy forge just like everything else besides Sol and a few lore places. Meaning they have to be super generic so they can fit in a wide variety of places. Also remember that we're in a frontier outpost in a space future. Lore-wise, this place was not custom made with architects and land permits, it was plopped down by low-level engineers by connecting a bunch of mass produced prefab units together. It thus makes both game sense and lore sense that it's "not interesting."
    - 7:23 How is that not stealing? And how did THAT not aggro the skimmer even if their presence doesn't? I don't see a sign on the medical supplies that says "free, take one." Normally video games avoid this issue by placing them in hostile territory so, naturally, it's not a big deal if you steal them because you're killing the inhabitants anyway. Since this is a neutral outpost, though, then this is theft, no?
    - I understand WYSIWYG from when I learned HTML at age 12, but there's a fine line between judging what's presented and ignoring the fact that what's presented is absolutely an Alpha. Perhaps some game devs can comment on this but my understanding is you generally make "greybox" assets, which have either no textures or very minimalist textures, then you place them in the game world, THEN you polish them with high quality textures once you can actually see them in-engine. Again, if this is wrong, some game dev feel free to chime in, but assuming it's right, then I would not expect good texture quality right now, and bringing it up feels...mildly dickish.
    - As someone who primarily does exploration and wants all the gadgets, I am happy to see they took the Halo approach to firearm design. (i.e. the pistol being the best gun.) But even though I love it personally, I'll agree it's an odd design choice when you see it.
    - It is a Goliath. Skimmers have 2 turbofans. Goliaths have 4. It is absolutely a Goliath. But yes, they should be very dead. Even with the PDs handling the missiles, the main laser/plasma weapons on a Goliath will shred a non-engineered space ship. A human on foot should be almost instakilled by them.
Personally, I am quite impressed. I still believe that Elite and Star Citizen are more or less direct competitors, and while Star Citizen's FPS gameplay has more depth than this, it's also janky as hell. Every death I've suffered doing FPS stuff in Star Citizen was the game's fault, and I say that as someone who freely admits to being a complete trash FPS gamer. Despite being Alpha (too), this was smooth as silk. I can already tell that I am 100% going to enjoy FPS gameplay in Elite more than I do in Star Citizen.
That said, I still can't sit in the front of my Anaconda and look out that big beautiful bay window at the front, sipping a cup of coffee and watching Sag A* do its thing. I'm still glued to the bridge. And for me, that's the biggest failing of Odyssey. Walkable ship interiors was my #1 most wanted feature and it got axed immediately. For that, Odyssey will always be second fiddle overall to Star Citizen, for me.
But the FPS stuff looks very solid. Guess I won't be leaving either game any time soon.

Perhaps you'd like to enlighten us as to what, exactly, out of my eight pretty damn well explained points you think is me "falling for a marketing tool" precisely?
Was it the part where I pointed out the strange lack of theft mechanics, or the part where I point blank said that the lack of walkable ship interiors meant this game was inferior to Star Citizen in at least one way? Or maybe it was the part where I agreed that a damn Goliath should be more than a match for a single dude in a space suit?
All I did in FDev's defense was simply point out that you don't usually see finished, polished 4k textures in "Alpha" footage. In fact, when was the last time we DID see finished 4k textures in Alpha footage? Gee that'd have to be...the Cyberpunk 2077 Demo at E3 in 2018, I guess? Boy that turned out to be such an accurate yardstick to measure the game by, didn't it! (Sarcasm, just in case it wasn't blatantly obvious.)
tl;dr I wasn't somehow biased in my original comment. I gave them the benefit of the doubt that they have not 100% polished the textures in ALPHA. Other than that, I was actually mostly skeptical and critical, and unlike you I EXPLAINED why I felt that way. You say I have "no idea" but give as much details as the textures we see above. Go troll commenters in one of Yamiks' videos. (Or don't. Yamiks doesn't deserve you either.)

@@austinm5630 first off it’s common knowledge that this footage is comprised of multiple play attempts at the same mission. Not even going into the things we saw that were obviously a bit jank in this demonstration. It is not at all a stretch to assume that the multiple attempts are covering up current game issues. That is because this sort of demo is a marketing tool by definition. It is not a demonstration of game stability. Furthermore if you write a novel every time you reply to a comment don’t be surprised if people don’t touch on every detail and focus on a general point.

You're right about the "greybox" assets. It's to give the developer (sometimes the player if they're playtesting) an idea of what is going to be there. To be like "I'm just judging it on what's there" and calling it shit is like saying "this is a shit final paper" when you're at the end of refining the draft. All the stuff is there but it just needs to be slightly refined. In this case, the stuff that's here (excluding the running animations cus that shit kinda bad) really isn't that bad looking (I don't really know what has been going on behind the scenes at fdev though). Most of the stuff in this video seems really nitpicky and comes off asshole-ish. Also, he hasn't seen moon dust before smh.

Exploration in the ships isn’t very fleshed out and in the SRV it’s less so. There’s no salvage in this game really. The reason they're able to run around but are still being stealthy, is because the guards scan you if you get too close, and they're carrying something they shouldn't be.
The guard at the beginning doesn't turn around or hear them because there's a thin atmosphere on the planet and they're also wearing helmets..
There's logic behind a lot of the stuff in the video and they discuss it after.

    • @Seekay_

This makes no sense. Either the guards were actively looking for illegal items, or they weren't.
If they were, they would've been waiting for these guys at the gate because it's kinda hard to miss a giant spaceship dropping off two randoms right next to your settlement and then doing a low flyover.
If they weren't, what's the point of being stealthy? Just act normal and walk right in but keep your distance. The guards aren't going to scan you unless they have a reason to, or if you get close enough for their sensors to auto-scan you, in which case you'd get caught anyway because sneaking doesn't magically make your equipment invisible to their sensors.

The combat also doesn't even seem that intense, but at the same time its just a basic combat encounter with only laser weapons, im sure grenades and other heavier weapons might possibly make it more intense. Nice of you to say that your opinion shouldn't be the end-all be-all of how others ought to feel about the preview. I know it feels like something that shouldn't be said, but sometimes folks need to hear that if they hinge their enjoyment on the whims of "influencers." Even if myself and the people I play with seem to be the only ones eager for Odyssey most of the time, we're still going to look forward to it.

i think thats not the sniper rifle, its laser rifle and i assume its main usage is chewing through shields, then i think you need to change weapon for more appropriate to penetrate suit/body of target. But Yeah, that pistol is something else...

Need to get rid of the auto docking computer as a mod and integrate that plus the auto land as a standard option on every ship that CMDRs can either leave active or disable as we currently have with flight assist...hopefully this auto land is the first step towards that? :-/

I agree with most of your points, but the pistol doesn't do more damage, you see him shoot guards with it later and it clearly does less. He just used it against unarmored unsheilded npcs in the power room, then the guy with the rifle opens up on armored, shielded targets.

I'd agree. Tho for me the bad graphics are not nearly as important as the technical stuff:
    - the AI is terrible (aiming, movement, visbility to player?)
    - the engineering grind will be probably super painful - aswell as engineered attachements cannot be switched? What?
.. the graphics doesn't bother me, they get old the fastest while the good gamedesign last almost forever. (look at Valheim/Portal/Minecraft .. xD)

I get space legs is exciting (really) and that it's the next 'big step' for expanding Elite (really). What I *don't* get is...Elite's core mechanics and features are woefully incomplete, imbalanced, or shallow (and in many cases, all three!).
Where is Passengers 2.0? Where is a working C&P system that makes sense? Where is c-logging and interdiction improvements? Where is improved commodities system? What about Powerplay? CQC? Squadron game play and meaningful leaderboards/leagues?
Where is the *rest* of the space(SHIP) game we all know and love and want to see more of?

The pistol and laser rifle could be different classes. The pistol might be a pure energy class to break shields (hence quick shield break) with the rifle kinetic and energy even. They could also be engineered differently but hard to know.
It looks very promising, but I'd like to see the more compete version. With improved animations, more aggressive AI, weapons that sound meatier or louder. That sand needs sparkle/glint to it and the crates are probably place holder awaiting actual textures. At least these are things we'd hope, also that constant beeping for auto dock on the surface, good catch, that should only be turned on when landing gear is deployed, wouldn't drive people insane then. Interestingly, this is from a build 3 months ago, the combat gameplay from a dev diary looked more polished than this, wonder if anyone else caught on to that.
I wouldn't compare their commentary to Ubisoft, Ubi is a whole different level of fake cringe.

I'd like to touch on a handful of things that you (Pilot) brought up. I'm not gonna be gentle but I won't be harsh either. Just my opinion here just as you have yours.
    "Nobody talks like that."
People that want to have a little fun in what they're doing do that. People that like to RP do that. People that want to maybe take the game a little too seriously will do that. People that like total immersion do that. People that just wanna goof around a little do that. Hell, I'm tempted to get a voice modulator to do a "walky-talky" tweak and talk like this with my buddies in missions when it comes out just for the hell of it. Why? Because people aren't always talking their work or what happened in their lives lately or what they had for breakfast or what the fucking Kardashians are up to this week. True, not many people play games like that (I guess, I dunno, I didn't take a survey or anything), but some people like to. It doesn't have to be the whole MilSim-level stuff, but planning things out and organizing and coordinating on the move? Definitely something me and my buddies do. Why do people play like this or however they want to? For whatever reason they like. Is it kinda silly? Sure. But this is a video game; it's not meant to be super serious. Even if some people DO take it WAY too seriously.
"Everything is bland colors, just beige and dusty."
I'll assume that you've never been on a military installation. Buildings and structures on military bases (US bases at least) couldn't get more bland if they were on a black and white TV. And if you're in the Navy (like I was) or visit a Navy ship, I sure as hell hope you like gray, gray, and oh yeah! More gray. Okay, and a little white thrown in here and there. It's utilitarian. This is a planetary settlement on what seems to be a desert planet, not the Louvre. They wouldn't care about what's pretty; they're care if it worked or not. Not to mention what a sandstorm or two does to a nice paint job if all the sand everywhere is anything to judge by.
"The walk animation is horrible and they float above the ground."
Yes, they're floating above the ground. Yes, the animation is kinda janky. But I've also seen far worse. And this is also an alpha build. Just another thing to add to the list of things to work on. At least it seems that we'll have the option to switch between
    "The mountains are popping."
Yep, I saw it too. And as someone that likes to take in all the details from close by to far away, things like that can be freaking annoying. But again; alpha build. Another thing to work on.
"Why don't the NPCs see them?"
Gonna have to go with speculation here. As you mentioned, maybe it's a neutral location and the NPCs don't care until you do something dumb. When they landed, they said that they were clean, so there's that. They aren't in any sort of stealth movement. They walk right in front of several guards and skimmers who just don't care. Gotta be the whole "neutral base" thing. I can't imagine the AI detection being that bad. If it is, then DAMN that's definitely something to work on.
"I'm not judging on the final product, I'm only judging on what's presented."
What's being presented isn't a beautifully polished release trailer built to showcase the greatest aspects of the expansion. It's a playthrough video of a single mission with strict parameters meant to show what's possible. Yes, it's gonna be rough around the edges; that's what Pre-Alpha means.
You like salvage mechanics and the tools. I love the idea and wish they'd put some sort of ship salvage mechanic into the game, maybe something No-Man's-Sky-ish. Not necessarily to get free ships, but materials, goods, maybe some modules.
Pistol doing more damage than the assault rifle? Remember the M6D pistol from the first Halo? Pepperidge Farm remembers. Speaking of weapons; non-lethal and/or silenced weapons! Come on FDev, give us sneaky types something to work with!
That pretty much sums up what I've got to say about it. Are my hopes and dreams for the expansion shaken or broken? Nah, it looks pretty damn nice overall. Am I fan-boying all over it? Hell no, there's plenty of things to work out and change around to make sure it works right. Is it promising? Very, but promises have been broken before. Here's hoping that this is something that lives up to the promise.

I've only had Elite for about two weeks and I have a bit of a hot take about this:
The trailer doesn't really fail to meet my expectations. This is about the level of quality I was expecting.
Elite is a mind blowing game in terms of scope. It's a 1:1 scale recreation of the galaxy, astronomical physics simulator, spaceflight simulator plus combat, terrestrial flight simulator plus combat, and a driving sim (sort of). That's not even the full list of core gameplay elements. But the "a mile wide and an inch deep" metaphor from the "combat is broken" vid from a while back is accurate. There's so much going on that none of the components of the game are perfect. A lot of them are just okay.
Obviously I hope they improve heavily on what we saw in the trailer, but that level of datedness and jankiness should be familiar to anyone who's tried any of the Horizons missions. It's not exactly shaping up to be the lowest quality gameplay component of Elite.

In the video they talked about how they tried attacking before the power take down they lasted seconds lol
I think they are showing the sneaking in way for just for show and tell .
Yes the damage is what they did for weapons on ships so the pistol does more Physical Damage and it does crap against Shields
There is 3 energy weapon types Physical Damage , Heat Damage and Plasma Damage
Physical Damage good against non shielded target and not good against shielded target
Heat damage good against Shields not good against non shielded
    Plasma ok against both
Just like in ships unless engineered

This expansion is needed and wanted but I could care less about the combat. I would have rather seen how this could be used in finding new areas to change the future of the game. I hope that fd let's us use this expansion to further exploration. I want to be able to use it to better find things like guardian ruins in systems and even underground tunnel networks on planets and things of that nature. I mean in my opinion this should have been a video where the team was exploring a body and one of them fell into a tunnel discoverying something or a biological lifeforms home under the surface. I would also like to see the fps used to create some sort of base on planets way out. Thats what I want in elite. I want to be able to use the fps to do research on far out bodies and create a small base for myself. Wouldn't mind the combat as far as dealing with pirates or intruders. Still I hope that in the future these kind of things are used with the fps and planet upgrades. Personally I think they should have used something of this nature to showcase the fps side. Great work as always and keep up the great content

I don't think start citizen needs help killing itself, it's barely alive in the first place. Comparing ED to SC is like comparing NASA to that chick from highschool who sells scentsi cubes and kitchen knives for a living and talks about flat Earth all the time

@@thewolf9637 so is literally everyone else because it's still not out. I'm almost fucking 30 and they announced that shit when i was in highschool. It's a pyramid scheme run by a known confirmed con artist and anyone still defending it is a fucking moron.

I was so positive after the Dr Kay Ross interview/presentation on the new lighting and planet tech. Then... then we got this. I am honestly deflated, as Odyssey was my most anticipated software of 2021. (except perhaps for Horizon or God of War)
