As a retired Youth Development Director I always told my staff that everything that the kids experience is a necessary skill that they need to learn. It is important to give them the space to work out their issues with each other so that they can learn how to cooperate & grow a sense of community & belonging. Adults need to resist the urge to step in unless the situation is dangerous or unhealthy.

this has been happening since the home computer...its just progressive with smart phones. why ANYONE would give their child a smartphone...is something beyond my understanding.

I don't equate porn to sex. Porn is a stimulant in a sexual way, I guess, but I don't think that porn and potentially masturbating qualifies as sex. I certainly don't think that pornography is to blame for boys and their dating habits. There's a lot of unreasonable expectations, a lot of social media pressure, a lot of factors that are influencing romantic connection - and let's not forget that we also tell a story that money is the most important thing of all time now so we're all supposed to work fervently and never date anyways. I don't think that "easy" sex dissuades people from having it. In fact, most men who use dating apps cannot find a date on them - only a small percentage of men date on dating apps so clearly it's not an easy way to a date for most men. There's just a lot that was said here and many premises I disagree with despite appreciating that the discussion is happening because on that point I agree. We should be talking about sex a lot more and why romantic relationships are particularly important for our health and how to make the best of them. I hope that discussion will exclude how prudish we should be or not be.

I'm finding this line of discussion a bit insulting to the youth of today. It always seems like adults who did not grow up with tech are attacking the 'new culture' of today's youth. Porn has always been available--- not to blame of social anxiety or 'laziness'. Today's youth are being analyzed through a lens that is outdated. That said, this is a new era and reasonable limitations around tech should take place. But, there is far more going on with youth today. There was a pandemic, our standards of "success" have become increasingly difficult, our ways to success have changed.... I don't think this is an accurate assessment. I would prefer to hear directly from the youth--- not adults that never experienced this type of upbringing. Just saying. I think all blame on tech is a cop-out. (Perhaps some blame on parents spending too much time on tech is a problem....)

I would also point out that there are so many ways that the youth of today are far more successful overall than generations past. Indicators may show that there are many delinquent behaviors that have decreased in the last few decades. (I'm certain that if there had been a camera every place I was growing up--- we would have been much better behaved. lol). The bigger issue ironically is the idea of "success" and the pressure around it have become more intense than I have ever noted previously. That's anxiety provoking and depressing in itself. The standards have changed. Not all bad, and not all good. Different.

Exactly, they sound like the generation before them, who said the youth were lost because of un-Christian music, "secular" music. It also must be said that the youth in this generation are doing better than the last, I know I'm a kinder person than my parents etc. Some of their generation are in parliament making up bigoted laws, that's not the new generation ruining the world.

Porn has always been available but not this easy, you had to go to a store and buy a magazine or check out a video…therefore causing some embarrassment or nerves about it…just saying

As someone whose been following the crisis with young men phenomenon- I can say this segment is so off-base and only adds to emasculation of young men. Just ridiculous

I’m just about tired of old people speaking on behalf of the young. Sure, they say a lot of the obvious. But how about you actually speak to one of us, and try to understand our perspective.
