- To my knowledge, there is only one company that refurbishes or rebuilds the Getrag 420G transmission for the BMW M5 and other e39 series. And they want $6,000 for a rebuilt transmission PLUS a $1,000 core charge!! Or, you can buy a new one. Good luck with that. I take an exhaustive approach to refurbishing this transmission with no knowledge available to me on how to do so. It was a bit scary.

You are a brave man, a long time ago we used to convert these transmissions to dog boxes, we had a whole wall full of special tools.
Foreman all ways came by and wondered why it took so long 😂
@claessjostrom565 Do you know where to buy syncros to it??
@@nicolaimrkbrejnbjerg611 No I’m sorry I haven’t worked on these gearboxes for over twenty years.
When you were splitting those cases I thought you were gonna go all the way and 1000 little dears, bearings, keepers were all gonna fall out on the bench.
:) Only one little pin and two bushings fell out. Better than expected.
Awesome video, I have never seen anyone attempt such a brave repair of a Getrag 420G. When taking out the output flange me and my father also discovered the washers were glued together with some deep reddish sort of glue like I believe you mentioned briefly, do you know what that could be? Does it need to be replaced?
Thanks 👍 I used a red loctite like substance on the cv axles. I don't recall using it on the transmission.
What’s the name of the part that fell out? I’m missing that on my e46 m3 6 speed
No idea. And I doubt you will find one anywhere. Maybe if you call diffsonline and beg.
How much to refurbish the e39 M5 Gearbox. Mine makes a noise in all gears but 5th
Sorry for the late reply, but it costs about $7k to get the Getrag 420G refurbished!
This was good, but it didn't really explain how you remove the tail housing which is one of the most important parts!
If you are removing that tail housing, all I have to say is good luck and let me know how you did it.
@@artwerksgarage YES!! Just did it yesterday, looking on youtube for instructionals, but couldn't find any, so I did a ton of research because there really isn't much out there. I figured it out and my video is coming out in a couple of hours actually! So if you're ever interested, I've got the info. Big fan of your work and channel - Keep it up!!
Send me a link to the video when you’re done. I’d love to check it out.
This transmission was also fitted to E39 540i, am i correct? Could you provide me with BMW OE number for this exact transmission?
Yes it was also used in the 540. Part No.: 23007501757
Hello, my transmission is a factory 6-speed manual (getrag 420g), but I have a problem with the bell housing bearings. Do you have a bearing kit that you can sell me for the bell?
Sorry, I do not. Your best bet would be to go through Diffsonline.com.
Can u do bmw E36 plz
Sorry for the late reply, but I don't own an E36. Should I?
You're a brave man lol
Brave and stubborn
