    I have been doing some of my own car repairs for a number of years without consultation, a few months ago my daughter"s 2000 E46 BMW would not move when the reverse was selected, so I started to watch some video, after reviewing a few, I choose your videos to test my ability. This was my first attempt at a transmission repair job and because of your detailed videos and articulation, I was able to complete the repairs to the transmission. You are proof that RUclips can be used constructively and not necessarily destructively. THANK YOU 50S KID. Your videos are great teaching tools, keep them coming.

    I'm extremely impressed by you taking on a transmission overhaul. That said, seeing the inside of one of these beasts makes the best argument ever to choose the simplicity of a manual gearbox.

    I am an amateur and have rebuilt many manual boxes without any problems, but I have no idea how you have so much knowledge to rebuild one of these. I watch the pros doing this and you are just as good.

    Did you steal my brain ? This is exactly how I think ! I like the way you narrate the details as you go. Too often someone with "expert knowledge" just pops a part off, gives it a name and throws it to the side with no explanations. You take the time to clean, show and describe what you're seeing and doing. Like Chevy Chase said in Modern Problems after he snorted up a trail of "demon powder" - I like it !

    Recently told I need a new Trans on my 2000 323is, and I tell you I have been in the "dumps" since last Friday! So I decided to make it my mission to learn more about it, other than knowing that it helps drive the car! Within a few days, I have become accustomed to the terminology, while searching for a new one, used or rebuilt. I viewed the video on Mr. Ferraro and learned something about gears 3 and 4 ( part of my problem with car). Additionally, my learning experience continued as the video moved to the 50's kid on rebuilding the trans. I have gained so much just by watching you breakdown your transmission. You are so darned efficient, knowledgeable and organized. I'm impressed! But not only that, you have helped me alleviate some of my fears of the unknown. I now know and with more seeking and searching, I can make an informed decision about my car. Thanks and thanks!

    That spring compressor tool is absolute genius! I have the gm tranny in my 330ci and will ultimately have to rebuild or replace it. Everything I've read (very little in the way of you tube) says that compressing those is a bee otch and you made it look like child's play. Thanks again for an awesome vid!

    • @50sKid
      @50sKid  9 лет назад

      +Robert Laugherty Yeah it's a piece of cake to compress auto tranny clutch packs. The tool is the design of Jeff Richardson, whose videos I credit in the description.

    • @robertlaugherty4914

      +50sKid the pistons are evidently difficult to put back in place on the gm 5L40e. They sell some sleeves to help wedge them back into place. I hope my transmission doesn't fail anytime soon but I'm actually looking forward to trying this. Even considered buying a junk yard one to practice on. Didn't see a significant amount of burning on your clutch steels so looks like this will serve you a good long time! Are you going to replace the wiring harness? Do you think that is necessary due to the heat cycling making it brittle?

    • @50sKid
      @50sKid  9 лет назад

      +Robert Laugherty Wait for part 2--I show how I deal with burn spots on my C clutch steels. I did not replace the wiring harness--it's fine. Just had to be really delicate. So transmission builders use something called a Bench Buddy www.benchbuddy.com/ to burnish the insides of the piston sleeves in the valve bodies to help sticky pistons to not be stuck. It's like a pipe cleaner that you can stick on a drill. There is a transmission builder called Hiram Gutierrez who has a good RUclips channel and he uses them. ruclips.net/user/hiramgutierrez I highly recommend you watch one or two of his builds on other GM transmissions and maybe you'll get a good idea of what it looks like. I can't remember which of his videos I saw it in, but if I can find it I'll post it.

    Great videos! Super helpful. One thing I was trying to do is identify if my D/G drum had already been replaced or not (180k miles and no reverse problems) but I could not find a way to ID the updated drum without fully disassembling the clutches to see the "Kuhle" marking under the G piston. So I fully disassembled it, and did not have the Kuhle drum. But after buying one, I learned an easy way to ID it that may help others. The original drum is not machined on the OD of the G drum area, it's a rough casting (D drum are IS machined). The Kuhle drum is fully machined on both drums.

    50's kid!!!! I definitely have to thank you for the great highly detailed videos again!!! I've replaced my tierods and moved on to replace the control arms and bushings and sway bar end links, amongst many other items thanks to your videos. I would have never attempted any repairs without watching your earlier videos that gave me the confidence to get the job done. Very much appreciated!! Thanks and please keep the videos coming!!! I have a quick question for you......I currently have 171K miles on my 2004 325I. The car runs extremely smooth and I do not have any error codes at all. Oil is changed every 6k-7k miles with full synthetic Castro oil. I do not see a single leak of oil anywhere in the car. My problem is that I end up having to add a full quart of engine oil every approximately 2-3 thousand miles. Is this normal for a 170K mile 2004 325i car? any recommendations on fixes?

    • @50sKid
      @50sKid  9 лет назад

      +Ken mine does the same thing. I can't say for sure if the rings or worn or if it's maybe the valve stem seals. But, pretty common for an old engine. Just add oil. :-)

    @50sKid I'm not entirely sure what happened to mine yet. I'm going to pull the transmission out today. When I was driving I saw some light smoke in the mirror and when I turned down the music, I could hear something wasn't right, like a rotational groaning sound. I stopped the car and saw smoke was coming out from under the hood but when I opened it, I couldn't see anything. I debated stopping there but was literally a few minutes from home. When I got home, I saw ATF hemorrhaging all over the driveway. The car was still moving and shifting fine at that time. I'm thinking it probably spun the bushing out from the front. Do I have other things I need to worry about since I drove it like this a few miles? What other kind of damage could have occurred with a probable low fluid condition etc.? Thanks for the great videos! I've been working on cars for over 20 years and sometimes I think "wow this is complicated" and then hearing you say "no big deal" about some of this stuff is actually a great a confidence booster!

    Hi , I have passat with 5hp 19 transmission, the car was flooded, and the TCU was dead, the car worked in limp mode, he used it like that for a while forward 3d gear an reverse working fine, after I bought it from him I found the dead TCU, there was a lot of corrosion on the plug also, I cleaned it and after that the car works normally forward, changes gears smoothly but the reverse only works when the engine is idling, as soon as I touch the acceleration it seems to disengage and acts as neutral, if I release the acceleration it goes in reverse, other simtoms, when cold in reverse there is only a bump even at idle and car stops, move from N to R and moves a little and disangages, when hot reverse works at idle, it even goes uphill, other than that, if I remove the TCU reverse seems to work fine, I can accelerate even when cold. Hope you read this

    Update: 1.5 years (~50k miles) after boring out my oil pump and replacing the bushing, it has failed again. Looks like it wasn't straight enough, and caused the nose of the torque converter and the oil pump to wear on each other, and the teeth of the pump gear to wear out. I bored the housing straight, I was a pro machinist for 12 years. I think the problem was that I used a bushing that was already the correct size on the inside. It's much more accurate to bore the bushing after it's installed. They sell them like this, called "finish in place". If you're going to do the job, I would use that type of bushing. I would also use a solid bronze one, the "puzzle piece" looking joint on the steel/copper clad bushing always seems to become a problem. But in hindsight, I would have just bought a new oil pump. It's not too expensive for the amount of labor involved getting in there.

    Hey the kid. Simple question... can an M54 be put into a diesel e83, both mk1, using the transmission that is in the diesel? 2009 2.0L diesel vehicle, I'm not sure which box I'm sure it's a 6 speed. The GM box on the M54 is knackered, as is the 2.0L. Soooo just wondering. Surely the m54 ecu (which I'll have to transfer with looms) will see the wrong tranny and just throw a code? M54 box needs refurbishment as has lost drive forward or backwards. .👍👍👍👍👍

    I wish there was a detailed diy video for the zhp21 on my 2007 bmw 335i. Getting gear ratio monitoring for 3-4. I've done fluid,filter all sleeves except the solenoids. Hoping its solenoids & not the e-clutch as I would have to take it to a shop, though I would be so willing to diy if there was a vid.

  • @maxreaper25
    @maxreaper25 6 лет назад

    My car says gear monitoring 4 and it went into limp mode while cruising down a hill. The transmission clunked and I felt it and the cog sign appeared. It hasn’t disappeared for anything. Not when the battery was unplugged or anything. I didn’t clear the codes because I don’t wanna dismiss the issue I want to figure it out. Someone had a similar issue and said their drum a snapped and they replaced it. Apparently it’s a clutch issue. But any advice or help would mean a lot. Your opinion is appreciated. Don’t hold back! Let me have it! Thank you.
    I don’t wanna replace the transmission bc like you said.. I don’t wanna have to go through the issue again and I prefer being able to fix and learn what I have now rather than go the easier route.

    • @maxreaper25
      @maxreaper25 6 лет назад

      Easier and much much more expensive.

    • @maxreaper25
      @maxreaper25 6 лет назад

      to anyone who has a similar issue.. I cleared the codes after doing much research, driving the car particularly conservatively, and somehow before clearing the codes, my car felt like the issue wasn't as severe. when it felt like things were getting better, I realized that what had happened was clearly an issue that wasn't terrible. it got better and I was driving around fine. so I decided to clear the codes and get ahead on maintenance. I spent close to 400 om that alone but anything is better 1500 for a new to me transmission + labor. ill take my chances with what I have and ride it till the wheels fall off. the limp mode is simply a computerized safety feature that is triggered by internal issues. being fully aware od the fact that my transmission wasn't hindering itself, but rather the computer was I felt it was safe to clear the codes and continue ownership until further notice hahaha

    So much appreciated the time You spent to show us this great project , I just got a question about My 04 330ci most of the times when the car sits for an hour or 2 after driving I get slow engagement from R to D for 1-3 seconds , it'll go a way after that and no shifting issues while driving
    I know I might need a new used tranny, but just don't know what's causing the problem, I even replaced the oil and filter but no improvement.

    We have a 1999 Audi A6 and it has the same transmission. It will barely pull itself forward and it won't go anywhere in reverse at all. I was wondering if it's the transmission or if it was something else. It also just pulled a code of P0741. Hope this help and I hope to hear something back soon. Thank you.

    • @50sKid
      @50sKid  8 лет назад

      Ah, so if you're getting that code, which is "Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Performance or Stuck Off" it COULD be that the solenoid in the valve body that controls that circuit has gone bad. That is the EDS-4 solenoid. If you look in the description you will see a dropbox link with 5 documents. The one that says valve bodies in the title has information on all the solenoids. You can check at the transmission connector for the proper resistances without having to remove anything. As to the loss of power, it could be that your transmission is in safe mode, which limits you to 4th gear (which is hard to get moving forward in). Anyway, if it were me I would jack the car up, unplug the round connector, and test the pins with a multimeter to verify the correct resistances according to that document.

    How much fluid does this gearbox hold and what type did you use ?.....also is it possible if draining the gearbox to change the oil to drain the fluid out of the torque converter otherwise doesn’t the old fluid left in the torque converter mix with the new gearbox oil ? ....Thank you

    @18:17 you removed part that mounts to the stator. Was it secured with two bolts which you didn't record removing? My 5hp19 was already rebuilt by someone else and it had two bolts holding that down. On spare 5hp19 that I have there were no bolts there.

      Well, shoot! I wonder if those two threaded holes were used as oil passage or if molting two parts together somehow prevents oil pressure regulation or circulation.

    Hey 50’s kid, love your videos. Quick question, I was driving my 2000 e46 auto, heard medium POP! Noise and transmission started slipping. Drove a mile to stop in a safe location, looked underneath car and transmission fluid all over the place.
    What do you think happened?
    What do you recommend to do? Replaced or rebuilt transmission?
    The car is only worth $2000 in good running conditions? Thx in advance.

    Hi 50skid, Great videos. I also have an e46 that I maintain myself. Your videos are tremendous help. I recently lost the reverse on the ZF transmission and am planning for the rebuild. Question to you... my jack stands max out at 17-inch height. Is this enough or should I buy longer stands?

    • @50sKid
      @50sKid  8 лет назад

      Seeing as my engine is currently out and my transmission is just sitting on my transmission jack, tomorrow I will go out and film a video and hold up a tape measure and show everyone how high my jackstands are and show how high the trans sits on the jack and then you'll be able to figure out how high you need your jackstands to be.

    Now you know why the other guy he was on about had a smaller block in the middle on his press, to support the centre shaft while you press it to put clip on not a roll of tape lol

    Hi 50s kid. A couple of months ago I had an alert next to the transmission indicator on my 2001 bmw zf5hp19. We changed discs and metals of the entire transmission. Everything went smoothly, until it tries to shift from 3rd to 4th. I have these errors:
    * Gear Monitoring Symptom
    * P0734
    * GLUE Symptom
    50s Kid, I love my car and it is not working properly. Any help/idea would be awesome. Greetings from Mexico.

    Hi Great Video, I just bought a used 325ci with a bad tranny,,it slow to start but after 15 mph it shifts fine, if I rev it up from stand still,,it will make a clunk sound and then it starting to move, but still slow, until the car picks up speed and then seems to work ok after that....what do you recommend me doing first, thanks

    Cool videos! My e46 330xi automatic is slipping on the 4th gear every thing else runs smoothly. I have read countless forums and each of them say different things. Does my transmission need to be rebuilt? Any advice on how I should go about this?

    Hi there, great video! I am trying to rebuild my 5HP19 transmission and I can't find in the transmission rebuild manual the oil pump gears clearance in order to determine if my oil pump is in good condition. Do you happen to have that information?

    • @50sKid
      @50sKid  6 лет назад

      i do not, but usually with gear type oil pumps it's 6 thousands between the rotor tips and the wall

    • @50sKid
      @50sKid  6 лет назад

      6 thousands of an inch. 0.006"

      +Tony Copelyn nah I needed to get a new pump bushing in there and couldn't install another in the old pump because the old seal had spun out

    Just did the same job but damaged the tubes between the valve body and pump housing. Found fuel injection hose that was a perfect match so I cut them to the proper length and made new ones. The trans functioned properly beforehand with a steady leak. Now i have no reverse. Any pointers?

    • @50sKid

      Get the proper tubes, lol. Give transtar a call and they should be able to ship to you. Check the description.
