This is a great tutorial. In case it isn't obvious, if you have existing .settings transition, it is really simple to convert them to this style for better reuse
Excellent point, Matthew. It's not necessary to start from scratch. You can pull existing Fusion .setting files into an Adjustment Clip and you're off to the races.
Here's another tip to make things even easier: Place a marker in the transition clip right at the middle, then line up the marker with the cut between the two clips. Thanks for the video! When I heard about the new adjustment clips, I figured this would be possible (and thank goodness) but wasn't sure if it would work so seamlessly. Glad to see it does!
Excellent suggestion. It's unfortunate that DR removes markers when you save a clip to a Power Bin (a bug, perhaps). But as long as your Adjustment Clip remains on the timeline, markers are super-helpful.
My goodness, David! Your teaching style is EXACTLY what I have been looking for! Not only do you show what to do, but you take the time to explain WHY you do it. I am the kind of person who needs to understand why and how something works, and I am grateful that you do this in your videos.
Dear David, I am new to Davinci and spent countless hours yesterday replicating transitions. This video is EXACTLY what I needed and nobody on the entire internet could explain it as well and easy as this! Thank you so much, you earned your sub!
David that is totally amazing. I watch a lot of these demos and this is by far one of the best I have seen in a long time. Very clearly explained thank you for taking the time to create this video.
I was using Hitfilm Express and it was so easy for me to create Zoom in transition in Hitfilm Express. But I found it difficult in Da Vinci. But you are a real power David Sir. It is really really helpful tutorial and it makes the things super easy.
Thank you David 🙏🏻!!! That’s what I was looking for. Very Good explanation coming fast to important points without time waisting blabla. Looking forward to your next Power Tip 🤩
Great tutorial! Although results are a bit limited, since we cannot get input videos individually, and can't access their "handles" (frames beyond the end of the clip in timeline) - if we could do that, then that would be a complete solution for making proper transitions.
That's a fair comment. The implementation isn't perfect (yet). But the new functionality is a huge improvement over where things stood even a few months ago. Cheers!
I cannot wait for your next tutorial. They are so clear and so easy to follow with your step by step explanation. Thank you for your great job. Keep goin', man. Waiting for the next one!
Thank you for this one! I really like these useful tips we can expand on. That's exactly what I was looking for. I saw many "reviews" of a (nice) transitions pack by others doing davinci resolve tutorials, but they never show how they really work.
Upon thorough review of your superb tutorial, I noticed that at the beginning of the video you talked about the possibility of drag and drop "adjustment clip" based transitions being variable length. At about 1:20 into the video you displayed a 3rd bullet point mentioning variable length transitions. However, you then moved on to create a fix 24 frame transition for a 24fps timeline, but at the end you never discussed how to make such a drag and drop transition stretchable. What steps would be required to make such a transition variable size, so that when it is stretched on the timeline its internal keyframes and so on adjust automatically in response?
Haha, badaboom badabim :-P Great Tutorial David, easy and great explanation of how to use the Power Bin... There is actually no debate, this is way faster trough all off your projects :-)
Superb. This is how it should have been from the getgo. The ability to build your own first class transitions. (Well your not yet able to place them in the same place as the build in transitions yet but close. Ok second class transitions. Does 16.2.1 resolve the need to create the dummy clip in the power bin yet? How would we know when that isn’t needed anymore?
I just checked with v16.2.7 and the adjustment clips still demonstrate the same behavior. Again, it's not clear if this is a bug. But the fact the "problem" disappears after you drag the clip to and from a Power Bin makes me suspicious.
Hi David, thanks for the PowerTip! Had a question regarding expression. Time Speed's speed param does not conform to expression. Any idea on how we can slow or speed up the adjustment layer based on comp.renderTime while still using keyframes ? Time Stretcher perhaps ?
Hey, Ray. You're correct... TimeSpeed's Speed parameter doesn't accept expressions. I'm not familiar with the TimeStretcher node yet... this might be a good opportunity for me to experiment with it. As far as changing speed of an animation, you can use the "Time Stretch" function in the Spline window. Granted, it's not as elegant as dragging a clip edge on the edit timeline, but it gets the job done. I'll investigate the TimeStretcher and see if there's a solution there.
Hello again David, after making the adjustment clip and saving it. Then if I open a new project with a different FPS, the adjustment clip doesn't work properly. Is it possible to make it conform to the current mast FPS automatically. Or will I have re-adjust the adj clip in Fusion and re shift the keyframes ?
@@rays4015 When you open a clip under a different FPS, are you saying it doesn't work at all? Or that it works at the original frame rate? When you "hard code" keyframes, they don't automatically adjust when the framerate changes. That would be a killer features but I don't think it exists in any form right now. The only option is to open in Fusion and move the keyframes to suit the new FPS. However, I'll keep my eyes open for more efficient methods.
I really like DaVinci resolve because of how stable and smooth it runs, but at work I’m forced to use Premiere which has a plethora of stability issues and crashes constantly. Resolve is a learning curve for sure, but if there’s one thing that hinders my production workflow in Resolve is how difficult it is working with text. In Premiere it’s unified and all done in one layer and is 100x easier to customize. I just have a hard time wrapping my brain around all the text features in DaVinci because they’re so spread out and don’t make logical sense as to where they place keyframe options.
Indeed, this is still the case. It leads me to believe it may be intended behavior rather than a defect. But the fact the "problem" disappears after you drag into and out of a Power Bin makes me think at least one of those behaviors is a bug.
David, do you know a way to move Power Bins from one database to another? I lost some Power Bins after updating to DR 16.1.2. In the former database I had saved they are still available, but not in the new. That's a pitty :(
Hmmm... My Power Bins carried over to 16.1.2. If you have the ability to open the previous database, you can drag the clips to a project, save the project as an archive (i.e. .dra file), open the new database, restore the archived project, and drag the clips to a new Power Bin. Yes... that's a lot of putzing around. I've done some searching but haven't found a more efficient method. Let me know how you make out.
Excellent question! You can create a transition inside an Adjustment Clip in v16.0. BUT... neither a) naming the clips; nor b) saving them to a Power Bin are supported until v16.1. If you're still using v16.0, you have the option of creating multiple transitions on a project timeline, saving that project, then either using it as a template for your next project, or using Dynamic Project Switching to copy and paste the transition clips from one project to another. So you can work around the limitations in v16.0 but it's a little convoluted. Make sense?
Hey there. If you're asking whether text transitions can be created int he same way (i.e. using Adjustment Clips), the answer is... absolutely. You just need to do your Fusion work in the Adjustment Clip rather than in a Fusion clip.

@@DavidPower ...I hope, that in future versions of resolve, adjustment clips can be assigned to specific tracks. Than with your method overlapping transitions will be possible...
@@brmoogma YES! I agree with you 100% on that point. Right now, adjustment clips effect every layer below them. Ideally, we'd be able to link them to specific tracks and/or clips.
