Replacing rotted wood trim around front door post

I'm no professional (clearly) and I'm not sure of the proper way of repairing this but I did it this way (my way lol). My whole intentions was to replace the old trim with new trim, and that was good enough for me. The wood that was under the trim may need to be replacement as well but I wasn't trying to do all that today (or by myself), I would seek a professional for that.
