Fun topic! I've been all 3 (immigrant, expat & nomad) and each has their benefits. One frustration is that often times westerners are labelled expats even when they are immigrants, whereas people from 3rd world countries are always labelled immigrants. It's as unfair as white privilege is, sadly. Nomad is easy to understand = travelling from place to place and living out of a suitcase or vehicle. But expat & immigrant are based on intent. Immigrant is someone who moves to a new country and plans to stay forever. Expat is someone who moves to a new country (normally for a particular job / assignment) and will return to their home country or move on to another after. For me, I've been an immigrant twice (illegal immigrant and later turned immigrant) and an expat (illegal expat several times, legal expat several times) in the other countries. I've also done 2 stints as a nomad in Southeast Asia, once for 60 days and once for 90 days :-) Ohhhh one last thing, I conducted a survey a few years ago amongst expat and immigrant friends for an article. The purpose was to determine when someone is simply on a long holiday / visit vs. living somewhere. The consensus is that if you reside in the same city for 2 months, you can say you lived there. People who are location-independent and move around for 1 month each in different countries are nomads but don't qualify as "living there" if that makes sense :-)
@@30AndAWakeUp I've written about them many times over the years. There were times when I was undocumented & illegal living in a foreign country and was invited to embassy parties and treated so well ... because I was white. Really drove me crazy. I also have a pet peeve with people saying they are moving somewhere but really they're just staying for a few weeks or a month hahahha That's a damn holiday abroad, whether working holiday or not ;-) Sending a big hug and 2 besos xo ((heyyyy, Katie started an expat podcast, you should be on it!))
White privilege…..please. i have been to 80+ counties and have never been privileged because of my skin color. I have been treated great and also poorly. It all depends on the person you are interacting with at the time and the circumstances. Please get off the color. Like Morgan Freeman has said many times….quit making a persons skin color an issue regardless of what it is and color will cease to be an issue. Or Malcolm X said……the biggest threat is the “white liberal” Jesus.
Thank you thank you thank you Kevin !!!!! Im learning so much from you and have rewritten my life goals to be more precise than they were. Now they have more meaning the more I’m learning about travel etc from you. ❤
You explained it well! There are some nuances, but the essential difference is transiency vs. being more permanent. I'm definitely a nomad and want to remain that way for now. But at some point far down the line, I suppose I will reach a point of wanting to be more permanent somewhere, and therefore, become an expat. I'm enjoying the topics of your livestreams, even if I'm not able to join them live due to the time difference. Thank you for sharing. Cheers!
And one thing the Digital Nomads discovered was that if you aren't REALLY exceptional and produce a LOT of quality work -- if your job can be done remotely then you can be replaced with workers who get paid far less in places like India and Mexico.
i never even thought about giving myself a label. i just exist and it never occurred to me that i needed to name it. i must be doing it wrong. but it's all transient anyway isn't it. this year i'm travelling next year i might be stationary. at the moment i'm doing this is the relevant thing. it's not my identity it's just what i'm doing at the moment. no need to give it more significance than it has.
I’ll continue to purchase a whole new set smaller than the first set as I’ve lost ALOT of weight and gave the first set away before I moved to Hawaii the beginning of 2023. It will be nice to have some that fit me now. (I was going to place an order when I lived in Hawaii yet I didn’t because unbound merino is from out of Canada. I would have had to pay the duty taxes to Hawaii so I cancelled my order before I hit the purchase button.)
i find it baffling that so many people, especially the younger generation feel either they coined the term expat or its newly created. in Hemingway's book “The Sun Also Rises” published in 1926 he talks about ex-pats living in Paris in the 20’s. There is nothing wrong with the term and it’s been around longer than we have all been alive. Also it doesn’t mean you renounce your existing citizenship. Just means your living outside of the country of your birth and nothing negative or gentrifying about the term.
Great live stream. Question on safety... Do you think that this also applies to women? Just curious if you have found other solo women travelers have found the same. I am packing for an upcoming trip and OMG how do you pack only carryon? I am a chronic "what if"-er. What if I get caught in the rain...multiple times in one day? What if I laugh so hard I pee my pants ...multiple times in one day? What if I spill my breakfast, lunch and dinner on my shirt in one day? Lol. *sigh* Big checked bag, carryon and a tote for a 9 day trip😢
Yeah, I know a ton of women that travel like I do. And while I’d say there are some different things to consider…the safety is similar. Like Japan, I’d say sex doesn’t matter at all. Yeah, you have to let go of the what if’s….if you have access to laundry…just pay enough for a week or so.

You definitely defined them more eloquently than I did! I should have brought you in for this topic! :)

yeah, I always say…I think all expats should be nomads first to figure out where they want to be
