FAQ Q: Why do you mark two lines? A: The inner line is where I want to sew. The outer line is where want to cut. The distance between the lines is the seam allowance and I prefer it to be precisely 1.5cm (5/8 inches). Q: Why do you draw the basting thread tight? A: Because the fabric is patterned, I'm cutting each side seperatly. Thus, I don't to seperate two layers of basting thread as usual. Q: Where did you buy the fabric? A: Here are a couple of shops I regularly buy my fabrics from: ebay.us/Z6jBqQ / ebay.us/vpXIlb / ebay.us/c90p81 / ebay.us/GWLgNd / ebay.us/rF94l9 Q: Where did you get the fabric weights? A: These are old balance weight I found at a flea market. Q: Why don't you sew in any darts? A: Depending on the style, you don't need darts. I skipped them because I don't need them and it's easier without darts. Q: Why do you sound so different in certain parts? A: I was sick when I recorded those additional voice overs. Q: My seams look so wrinkly when I turn them. How do I do it right? A: Cut down the seam allowance and clip in inside curves as shown around 7:43 Q: What's that fancy black pair of scissors you use for the lining fabric? A: These are zig zag scissors. They make that the edges fray less.
My history class is studying the Victorian Era this week, so this feels fitting. I am glad to know that Victorian fashion still survives. How many people here would enjoy getting together in a Vintage mansion with Vintage attire to drink tea, listen to Mendelssohn, and perhaps solve a mystery?
@@jtbasener1810 Closest to everyone? Well, here in Atlanta, Peachtree street back in the 1880's was lined with the Victorian mansions of the wealthiest families in the city. Rhodes Hall is one of the few that are left. It's a beautiful sort of neo gothic house museum but I'm not sure they host tea parties. However, Dr, Bombay's Under Water Tea Party is a charming little tea room in a row of Victorian era shops in a considerably more modest neighborhood that would love to host us in their library dining room. The Portal Victoriana, our local Victorian/Edwardian society goes there occasionally.
@@brucetidwell7715 That is amazing. Just your description alone makes me want to take the journey. Thank you for sharing. That is absolutely fantastic!
Every time I make a new waistcoat I come back to this video for inspiration and motivation. I really like the end result here. Despite having a very bold pattern it still exudes elegance and taste. My latest is going to have black/white plaid to match a pair of trousers I have.
I usually prefer to avoid visible top stitching unless it is decorative, but as you say it is all personal choice. The waistcoat police are not going to show up either way. Excellent tutorial.
Wow! So sharp! At the very end, I noticed the plaid on your vest appears to actually match your trousers. That is just next level tailoring. Do you have a video about that?
This is gorgeous, and so helpful! I'm sewing my father a vest out of a plaid cotton fleece material for Christmas, but have been struggling to find a pattern/style that would come out looking handsome. So many of the patterns out there end up looking quite plain, and particularly with the material I'm using, my fear is that the finished product would end up looking sort of elderly. But this is so handsome, and I think it will suit the material really well, and suit him, which is the most important. Thank you so much for this wonderful detailed video!
Wie immer, sehr schöne Arbeit. Und auch gute Inspiration für meine kommenden Näh- und Arbeitsvideos... Immer diese vielen Projekte. Aber du kennst das ja. ;) Liebe Grüße
You make that look so effortless and easy. I am making one for my partner having made a womens one for myself and really needed a video explaining what I needed to do so I could do it right.
Absolutely stunning! I hope you enjoyed making this video because I loved watching it and I'm looking forward to more! This the type of content I can watch over and over countless times.
I've tapered a pair of 30' trousers some days ago and gave me enough self confidence to buy your patterns, i didn't bought them yet, since i can't find the correct fabric But i will, by any means
I thought it was just me that was drawn to this period in history. Lovely channel and have subscribed. Will put my machine to good use in making some period fishing clothing to compliment my traditional angling. I'd be interested to see a video in your opening credits on the Red paisley smoking jacket. Look forward to seeing further episodes 👍
It was worth waiting for this video. It will be very helpful for sewing using patterns from yours book which I own. The waistcoat is so fantastic and you look great in it. Do you consider making some video (maybe in a Q&A) how you work with pdf patterns? What paper/material to copy them when I have it printed on A0 paper. Best wishes!
Since you have a plastic mat, you would save time by using a rotary cutter around your pattern instead of all the unnecessary time marking with chalk. If you're marking with chalk to be old fashioned, that's another story.
This waistcoat looks so amazing! Also like your use of the Geodreieck (geometry ruler?!) for marking the seam allowance. Why buy something new, when one has utensils from school fitting the purpose? Thank you for your making such beautifully shot videos!
Very nice video as always! I also tried basting on my sewing lines, to make them more visual, but i got a lot of troubles removing them, since i sewed over them. Do you have any tips?
He's not making sewing instruction videos as such. He is showing us how he makes his clothing. However, he does have a couple very specific videos like sewing a welt pocket and making buttonholes. Otherwise, your best bet is to scour RUclips for sewing instructions. There are lots and lots of out there. Also, check out your local fabric stores. They may other sewing classes.
Evening mate, I just got my center vent darker side grey pinstriped three piece suit, inspired off Luka changretta from peaky blinders, im worried if the center vent messed up my suit, im 5ft8, skinny, I've always worn double or ventless, I've never tries single vent, I wanted to try center vent but everywhere I read, people day it's the worst and isn't formal, should you disown and get another double vented one stitched or, keep it and not worry much.
amazing! So there is no canvas in the shawl collar area- Is that standard or is it just because your fabric is very thick? (gathering info because I love shawl collars)
In Belgium it’s impossible to find a pattern of a waistcoat Been to many many shops. I tried to make one from an another waistcoat but it’s a waist of valuable time really. Unless you are a professional seamstress which I am not. Sadly I had to abandon my project and focus on my drawing and embroidery.

Where is "here?"
@@brucetidwell7715 That is a good question... Do you happen to know of a castle that would be closest to everyone?

Look up Bernadette Banner... and then imagine her in her lovely Sherlock inspired garment as Holmes.
You look sharp in that suit. The fabric is wonderful. Thank you for sharing. In the US those zig-zag scissors are called "pinking shears"
The waistcoat looks fabulous. Thanks for showing how you made it.

Definitely a new channel I like this, man has style the only thing he’s missing is a pocket watch he could definitely pull off a double Albert drop
Lovely video and waistcoat!
Hope you’re feeling better now! ❤
So nice to see the waistcoat video!
I hope you're healthy again ❤️
holy cannoli you did so much prep work before even cutting these pieces out -- which is why the end result is so stunning~
the timing on this could not have been better, I can't wait to make this, I have some white and grey plaid wool that will make a slick waistcoat
Yes! The long awaited waistcoat video, thank you!

I love a classic waistcoat. I wish more men took the care for these details. They really elevate a look!
You even matched the pattern to the trousers! Exquisite craftsmanship.
Such a great video-- you describe the process accessibly and understandably while also making it clear you are very, very skilled ✨️

do you have any beginners series ? im not really sure whats happening or the reasoning behind some choices

What sewing machine do you use. Do you know whether old non-electric Singer would be also ok for such a project?
What fabric do you use for the back and lining? I think I'll use 100% black twill cotton for the main part.
Ordered your book! Currently I don't sew but I wanted to help out your channel and you have been a big inspiration on learning!
Much appreciated!
Beautiful craftsmanship! The ensemble is beautiful! QQ for you - and a bit random - what sewing machine are you using? Is that a Singer 301 by chance?
Hello sir, what is that fabric/item of clothing at 0:21? it is incredible !!
I liked your video
amazing! So there is no canvas in the shawl collar area- Is that standard or is it just because your fabric is very thick? (gathering info because I love shawl collars)
I don't know how other tailors do it, but as long as the outer fabric is not super flimsy, I skip the canvas in the lapel.
great video - why did you add the canvas to the front of the waist coat?
So the waistcoat stays in shape. That's standard procedure.
