- Install ElementaryOS (Freya) in UEFI Mode (Dual Boot Windows 7/8/10)
Tested on: elementaryos-0.3.2-stable-amd64.20151209.iso
Here is a list of stuff which I do in the video:
After making some space for Freya in Windows, follow:
0. Check if you have booted the installation media in UEFI mode or not.
- Fire up a terminal and type the command: [ -d /sys/firmware/efi ] && echo UEFI || echo Legacy
If it says UEFI, then continue.
If it says Legacy, then type:
sudo gdisk -l /dev/sda
If it says GPT: present and MBR: protective, then boot the installation media in UEFI mode. Otherwise, this is not the video for you.
1. Switch to Elementary OS Installer, select Language and click continue.
2. Select 'Something Else' and click on continue.
4. Time to create some partitions.
- Select the free space and create a new partition on it of type 'swap area' at the end of the free space.
- Select the remaining free space and create a new partition with the filesystem ext4 and mount point /
- Click on 'Install Now' and then click continue :)
5. Choose your timezone and click on continue. Then choose your keyboard layout :)
6. Enter your account details and click on continue.
7. The installation might take some time, I'll fast forward it. :) :) :) :D
8. Click on 'Restart Now'.

Worked great, thanks for the tutorial! Really helped me out after failing to setup dualboot properly in the past.
+SasCologne11 Thanks for the feedback! Glad to be of help! :-)
GREAT TUTORIAL. I HAD A PROBLEM AND THIS MAN HELPED ME A LOT. THANK YOU SO MUCH.
:-)
Absolutely fantastic!!! Thanks so much!
:-)
I'm just here to say is that this guy is a life saver, he helped me revive my PC with my data intact, I've tried my computer company's forum for help, they didn't even bother helping.
This guy deserves a lot of subs and I'm sure he'll help out anyone with problems . Thanks a lot 🤗
+Reaperz7Teen Glad to be of help! :)
Definitely agree with you this guy should deserve more subs.
Sobieska Onigiri Glad to be of help! :-)
thank u very much ☺
what operative system do you recommend to me "Apricity os" or "ElementaryOS", i want the most stable and without many bugs, in dual boot with windows and i want another recommendation what windows (8.1 or 10) only these two, because my laptop isn´t compatible with windows 7, and what versión pro, enterprice, etc. i hope your answer. friend.
Try both, use whichever suits you :-)
Hi, I've freshly instaled Elementary with WIN10 on UEFI (according to present instaructions). Works ok, however to change OS's I need to change boot order to boot'em "smoothly". When I set Elementary part. as first for booting, GRUB starts and when choosing WIN it starts recovering WIN OS, which I don't want. Is there any chance for switching the OS's more greacefully?
It starts *recovering* Windows? Well, this is the first time I am hearing about this. Are you sure you have installed both OSes in UEFI mode and are not mounting Windows partitions in write mode in Linux?
Windows is on UEFI, when I'm in Elementary and type command: [ -d /sys/firmware/efi ] && echo UEFI || echo Legacy ... it says UEFI - thus I assume it's also in UEFFI.
To install Elementary, I've to change boot order to USB flash drive - if that have anything to do with it.
Do you mount any of the Windows partitions in Elementary?
not through commands, it was accessible right after installation completion.
I've explered Windows partition thus mount by default?
+Nehal J Wani hey, so sinds you cant have more than 4 partitions and windows already taken up 3, and you need 2 for linux wich one should i delete? recovery partition or efi system partition?
+Eutim Putnoki If you are having an EFI partition, then your partition table is definitely GPT. You don't need to delete any partition. If you don't have an EFI partition and Windows is installed in Legacy Mode, then don't delete either of them. Instead of creating two primary partitions, create two logical partitions. For the option '"Select Type of Partition", make sure you choose "Logical". For helping correctly, please open diskmanagement in Windows, take a screenshot, upload it on picpaste.com and share the link here.
imgur.com/IBsymaf
+Eutim Putnoki Open command prompt and type:
diskpart
list disk
Do you see a '*' beneath the GPT column?
yes i do
+Eutim Putnoki You don't need to delete any partition. Just follow the video. Your partition table is GPT, so you can easily create more than 128 primary partitions. The 4 partition restriction is only valid for MBR partition tables.

your guide seems to work for me, but I'm in a big trouble: during OS install, in the end, it fails to install GRUB, and installation program crashes. How can I solve?
In order for me to help you, please boot the installation media for ElementaryOS, open a terminal, and type the command:
sudo gdisk -l /dev/sda
sudo ls -l /sys/firmware/efi
And share the output here.
+Nehal J Wani I have the output you asked me. Can I contact you by Hangout?
Yes.
Plz @Frederico, can yu tell me what changed yu brought to Bios to install EOs ? I've been trying since 2 days but i fail though i 'm following the guide ( HP./ Uefi W10 ) - Thaank u
Please share your exact issue. Where are you stuck? You can turn off secure boot in bios/uefi settings and access the boot menu by pressing F9
Hey guys, someone recommended to me to make a third partition called /home to store programs and files etc in case the OS gets corrupted. Is this necessary or just 'good practise'?
+TheDigitalShrapnel That is good practice. Not necessary.
great man, i just lost in partition step, new on linux tho
So are you stuck some where, or your problem is solved?
well my first problem solved, now when intalling process, it give me some fatal error, cannot install grub on dev/sda
something like that, i can't boot the OS
well it solved now, all is perfectly fine
thanks for the video, great job
Hey man, I know there's been some time and I appreciate the tutorial but I get an error with grub I would really appreciate it if you could help, I get the error; "Unable to install GRUB in /dev/sda
Executing `grub-install /dev/sda` failed.
This is a fatal error."
Is that all, or is there more text in the error?
@@NehalJWani Thanks for the quick reply, I really appreciate it; That's it there's no more text it prompts to a crash and it leaves me on the desktop after a bug reporting message
@@realeyelicker Could you share the output for the following commands:
fdisk -l
mount
@@NehalJWani Hey dude, I fixed all my problems by just nuking all the partitions and starting from scratch, I just installed elementary. Love your tutorials. Best of luck man!
U___u Why can't I create partitions ?? when i click the free space, the plus bottom don't appear...
Is windows installed in uefi mode or legacy mode? Please open disk management in windows, take a screenshot, upload it on picpaste.com and share it here.
i have all info just like you, but my acer boot to windows :( this is disapointing, i've tried to install ubuntu and it dont worked too. any tips? really apreciate your help :)
+Maxim Stratan What is your computer make/model?
+Nehal J Wani I have an acer aspire v15, no SSD, windows 10.
Follow this: forums.kali.org/showthread.php?28918-Acer-Aspire-v11-Dual-Booting-Kali-Linux-in-UEFI-Mode
+Nehal J Wani thank you sooooooo much!!! this worked :D
:)
It doesnt work for me, i have a more advanced MB with mouse support. I have done everything upto shutdown, after restart it doesnt show my DVD in uefi mode (have both uefi and legacy support on). If i choose boot menu options and select DVD, it goes to efi screen. Also have ubuntu installed in Uefi.
If that is the case, follow what I do in this video: ruclips.net/video/tV6mF1PL06g/видео.html
+Nehal J Wani Tried it. during installation it asks me to create "Reserved Bios Area". If i create it, there are 2 grubs( uefi and efi), If i dont create it my grub doesn't show freya, it only shows ubuntu. I cannot get to boot my DVD in uefi mode
+PirateZ Oops.. I sent the wrong link. Here is the correct link: ruclips.net/video/WulgG1GeJ4U/видео.html
+Nehal J Wani You are a gem, Thx mate. It was too much trouble and time wasted but I did learn something.
Here is what it looks like: onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=C2FAB187FAD1CFB6%2137555
A little bit cluttered, more unnecessary windows options.
You can always edit the grub.cfg file to remove the entries that u dont want to see.
I can't load my Windows 8 anymore... Any tips and help would be greatly appreciated. On a Lenovo IdeaPad
+BlackWavez I have the same laptop. As soon as computer boots, keep pressing F12. A boot menu will pop up. You should see Windows there.
That wasn't the issue, there was a problem with the bootrunner. I had to change a bunch of BIOS settings and re-install Windows and recover my previous version.
+BlackWavez :(
hey, my notebook have 2 storage.
SSD and HDD, but my SSD scheme is GPT, and my HDD scheme is MBR.I had been installed Windows on SSD. and my plan is install Linux on HDD.but when I'm install Linux on HDD and using grub for bootloader. does it can boot to Windows Boot Manager with Grub?
+ari nurcahya You can add an entry for Windows in Grub manually. Actually, in your case, I would convert HDD partition table to GPT and then install Linux in UEFI mode. Please share the output for the commands:
sudo gdisk -l /dev/sda
sudo gdisk -l /dev/sdb
But, i don't want convert my HDD to gpt. Because I'm worried to lose my data
+ari nurcahya You can convert to GPT without data loss. Use gdisk to do it.
Oke, i had been convert my MBR hdd to GPT hdd, but do i need to make efi partition again, in HDD? Because. I always get problem with booting. When i shut down my notebook, then i turn on again, it's always boot into grub minimal bash, but when i select windows boot manager in bios, my notebook can boot to windows
+ari nurcahya Grub minimal bash? What are your boot priorities? Have you installed Linux in UEFI mode? Send a chat request to me on hangouts for quicker responses.
I have a problem after I assign swap area the remaining free space got unusable can you help me???
You probably have Windows installed in Legacy mode, which means the partition table on your HDD is MBR. So, you can't have more than four primary partitions. You can, however create two logical partitions, one for swap and other for mountpoint / or you can create only only primary partition for / and ignore swap, or you can delete one of the pimary partitions of Windows after taking backup, and then create two primary partitions, one for swap and one for /
+Nehal J Wani thanks for answer and I have question is it important to make it primary? Also it worked as you said I make / primary and swap logical but there is other problem after installing at the very end there is execution grub dev/sda error. Do you know how to solve it?
Hi! No, for linux, it is not necessary. Could you please share the exact error while installing grub? For faster response, send a chat request to me on hangouts.google.com
+Nehal J Wani thank you very much for solving my problem!!! You have very good channel that help many people, subscribed.
Windows does not appear in grub, I lost my information? The windows partition was not deleted, can you help me?
(Update: Temporal error, after to update the system and reboot appears windows, nice tutorial ;) )
Thanks for your comment.
Hello Nehal - I tried following the same steps but its not working for me.
I have Acer V3-112p-C797 laptop with windows 10 , followed all steps but not working.....please help if you can....
+Aditya Sonawane Where are you stuck? Probably you boot directly into Windows. In that case, first, in BIOS settings, setup a supervisor password, then enable secure boot, then go the option "Select an UEFI file as trusted for execution" and select hdd0\EFI\ubuntu\grubx64.efi and name it as ElementaryOS, then turn off secure boot, clear out the supervisor password, then when computer boots up, keep pressing F12 and then choose Elementary.
+Nehal J Wani - Nehal thanks for response, I have created eos bootable USB from where I can boot the eos. Please advise if the steps you have suggested above should be executed before installation on HDD or after installation?
Thanks,
Aditya
+Aditya Sonawane Does it boot in UEFI?
Hi Nehal, yes it did boot in UEFI
+Aditya Sonawane The steps that I have suggested above have to be followed after installation.
Do you have method of fixing srttrail error? Automatic repair loop. Please
+Reaperz7Teen That problem is a bit different in context to this video. In any case, for me to help you, get to the command prompt, and share the output of the following commands:
diskpart
list disk
sel disk 0
list vol
list partition
Take a picture of the output using your smartphone / camera and upload them on imgur.com or picpaste.com and share the link.
Send a chat request on hangouts for quicker response :P
+Nehal J Wani okay I'm going to do it right now, how do I message you?
Add me on hangouts or share here as a comment. plus.google.com/+NehalJWani
+Nehal J Wani hey I sent you the image :)
I didn't receive it. Please give a chat request on hangouts.
Hago los pasos tal y como es el video y a la hora que termina la instalación de elementaly se debe de reiniciar pero no me la opción de que sistema operativo elegir....
+David Galvez What is your computer make/model?
+Nehal J Wani 😃😃😃 ya me funciono.... Muchas gracias.
¡Me alegra ser de ayuda! :)
+Nehal J Wani amigo estoy tratando de instalar APROCITY OS en una Laptop Acer aspire... Pero al momento de arrancar con la memoria no me manda la interfaz gráfica de la instalación.. Me aparece una pantalla azul... Whatsapp 7531439182
Could you please type in English? I don't understand Spanish. :'(
It shows an error whith grub, "failed to get canonical path of aufs"
+Josh C. During booting of Installation media or after installation of Elementary? If former, then try re-creating the installation media.
+Nehal J Wani During the installation.
+Josh C. What method did you use to create the installation media?
+Nehal J Wani I used Rufus to create the booteable usb. I entered in live mode but when I tried to install Elementary apeared this error (sorry for my english)
+Josh C. Is the EFI partition mounted in read only mode?
Hey man I have a problem, while installing the os, the installation screen completely freezes during the language selection and I'm unable to continue. Here are some pics with my problem: elementaryos.stackexchange.com/questions/6782/elementaryos-froze-during-installation I'm pretty sure I'm running UEFI mode and I disabled the secure boot and legacy boot, but it continues to freeze in the same way, what should I do?
Hey, can you type the following command in the terminal and share output?
sudo gdisk -l /dev/sda
Nehal J Wani It said permission denied. I also checked the boot type with your other command and it said UEFI, so I tried again and this time something popped up (but it still froze), it said "you may wish to read the release notes or update this installer". Maybe the ISO is old (I downloaded it 2 weeks ago) or maybe there's another compatibility issue that I'm still not aware of. :/
First type :
sudo su
Then type:
gdisk -l /dev/sda
Then share output.
Nehal J Wani i.imgur.com/YmCjtwN.jpg
I hope I did it right.
+Crimson Koba No, you did not. I asked you to type gdisk -l /dev/sda You keep typing the | where as I asked you to type small 'L'
I got the Elementary OS Iso on my Desktop. Can i do it?
You gotta make a bootable media from the ISO first.
+Nehal J Wani How do i do that? Im new in this
+Nehal J Wani I got it thanks :-)
