Always exciting to see Matt fights in the UFC. Hosting PPV fight nights were always fun. Sucks to see Matt like this. He is an icon in mixed-martial arts.
Anytime I get the chance I let people know how awesome Pat is. Met him at a training seminar in 05 and been buddies with him since. I spoke with him the night before my first MMA fight and he regularly checked in on me while I was going through a split with my ex and dealing with some depression issues. Cheers to the Miletich team.
I won't judge a man at his worst, especially after a brain injury. I had a TBI that made me violent and emotionally out of control for the better part of 6 years. I only wish him peace, recovery, and the reconciliation of his pain in hopes to be a healed man down the line.
Matt is and always will be a hero of mine. Matt and Brock Lesnar inspired me to start wrestling as a 240lb 13-year-old 7th grader. By the start of 8th grade, I was 190lbs with abs and biceps veins. I'm 31 now and do jiu jitsu because of my love of grappling which Matt was directly responsible for. Matt post-TBI is clearly a different person, and I hope he can recover both physically and mentally.
Great documentary. I just have 1 critique, one of the facts was incorrect. As you stated, St. Pierre was coming off a loss to Matt Serra leading up to the 2nd Hughes fight. In fact the serra fight was after GSP had won the title from Hughes.
He is truly a champion in the fighting ring. As a person outside the ring , it's more challenging. Real life is a challenge, & he has faced it. I wish him growth, healing and peace. Most of all, his family. God bless.
yeah, slauthering baby piglets in front of your friend to disturb him with the animal's screams and then throwing it's testicles at said friend is super challenging. real life is a real challenge fr fr
Your editing, narration and storytelling makes it so easy to watch this video, I feel like I'll be binging your videos for years to come. Excellent work sir!
@Jay Pat that doesn’t make a lot of sense. Not saying you’re wrong or anything but it just doesn’t make sense in the aspect of boxing and cte brain injuries. These guys not only get punched in the head as boxers do, but they also get kicked in the head, dropped on their head, and slammed. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that mma fighters take more damage to their punkins than boxers. And to think mma is less dangerous than boxing is just ludicrous. No one needs to be put under a microscope to see that.
Matt's second fight against trigg was my favorite of all Matt's fights. After the low blow went unnoticed I thought for sure he was done. That chock was sunk tightly. Hell of a comeback 🤘
I deal w/ TBI from being blown up overseas. It changes you, and not always for the better. I had to walk away from martial arts after almost 30 years, which only added to the depression. Mood regulation, sleep issues, body changes due to messed up hormone levels, no short term memory… It’s no fun, and I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy. I can’t say I was always the biggest fan of Hughes, but I am absolutely rooting for him now. A country boy can survive.
I pray that you may be victorious over the TBI you suffered whilst in Uniform, my brother. May Christ warm you with His protective, & empowering Light throughout your journeys in life. Amen!

Its inevitable that fighters will never be able to stay undefeated. But you can not take away from Matt what he was and thats why hes such a legend and always will be.
Well executed biography about a complicated and polarizing figure. Thank you for (mostly) not glossing over the ugly parts but also not making it the main focus of your production. We are all human, and we've all committed unspeakable acts - at least by the time we're middle-aged. There is redemption, but not for everyone. Some of us get hit by trains and experience traumatic brain injuries - the after-effects can change us completely and scramble our realities, making redemption that much harder to find. God bless Matt Hughes and all of the broken birdies among us.
Read his book and I guarantee you’ll immediately change your mind about that piece of shit of a man. He’s truly evil. Pls at least read the summarized version of it. People need to know that he’s a terrible human being. The lord works in mysterious ways and karma is one hell of a factor. No surprise this happened to him.
@@thedogrunner isn’t it? The whole concept of “karma” is a pure mystery. Why wouldn’t it be the man above? Who else can wield that type of control and power if not the one and only?
I never liked Matt Hughes, personality wise. He seemed arrogant, and took pleasure in bullying people, and this was by his own admission in his book. With that said, he is a legend of the sport, and nobody can take away his accomplishments. Given the accident he was in, it's hard to know whether or not the resulting TBI was a direct cause of his domestic battery issues after that. I'm not excusing that behavior, but there is no doubt that severe head trauma can dramatically alter a person's behavior, personality, and impulse control. I think this documentary does a good job of showing his successes without directly condemning his failures.
TBI is no excuse for him, he’s truly evil. Legend to the sport, but he is not a man that should be respected. Idc how impactful he was in the sport. The lord works in mysterious ways and karma is one hell of a factor. This was punishment, not an accident. No men on earth like him go unpunished. There’s a special place in hell for people like him.
A "Traumatic Brain Injury" can change a person's behavior without they even be aware of. It's impredictable the way that a person can act after a TBI injury, it can disable a person permanently. The quality of life may improve somehow but the damage is done. It's highly probable that Mr. Hughes was never shown any violent sign inside his family circle untill after the accident. He was one hell of a good fighter in the UFC.
@@StonedApe93 No, it isn't surprising. That doesn't make it excusable. Plenty of great fighters AREN'T human garbage. Khabib, Porier, GSP, DC.... All decent, standup dudes.
Absolutely loved Hughes back in the day. My favorite fighter by far. Was he a goof? Sure, but man could he back it up. A train couldn't beat him. Had the opportunity to take a picture with him at a event and was a amazing moment.
Complete Hughes is one of the beat. Stop saying negative things. Even if it happened before he was a big star. If he is struggling from the wreck, we should embrace him. He is a OG 🐐.
So because he has brain trama we should just forget about what he did to his wife and the way he used to treat people, he was an asshole just because he failed at suicide we should forgive him? Yeah right.
I remember watching him fight and didn't have a clue that anything like this happened to him until last year I believe I ran upon a story and him talking about it and it literally floored me because he was just so humble and no doubt anybody would be when you're life is taken and Jesus gives you another chance ..
Exactly. I understand her leaving and taking the kids if there was a legitimate threat to their well being. You can't raise your kids around DV, not if you have any kind of love for them. If there wasn't a legit threat though, then his wife did him wrong because this is part of the "for better or worse...in sickness and in health" oath she took. No matter how humble and polite a person may be, TBI's can change any, or every, aspect of who you are as a person. The ability to handle stress and control anger/aggression is certainly one aspect that is most often negatively affected. We can only pray for them.
I always felt bad for Carlos on that first loss...he clearly won that fight. Hughes was out first, everything that happened after that was collateral damage.
Matt was the guy that made me fall in Love with MMA and start training. I’ve done some horrible things in my life, destroyed great opportunities, everyone fucks up.

All honesty have gone through so much since Matt's accident. May there be better days ahead for all. 💪🏻🙏🏻✨
After you have an accident like he had, you are def not the same person you once were. Does not sound like Matt had DV issues before the accident, so the TBI after the accident could have changed him. Awesome job on this video
This was amazing man! Huges was my favorite when I started watching MMA in 1999. Until GSP came around then they're both my top fighters for years lol! But I have to be completely honest it seems like he got abusive due to the wreck and the brain injury I have heard so many people get violent with family after brain injuries or brain tumors
The lower cerebellum controls anxiety, panic, feelings, your heart rate, and many other things. So, something like this done to his brain might have completely changed how his mind works. A lot of people have no clue what an injury to the brain can do. I have been flοxed, which causes injury to the lower brain. His injury is several times worse. I take several supplements to counteract what it caused. So I can't imagine what's going on in his head. Most people do not realize just how much your brain controls. They assume it only is for "thinking".
@@Godrules That is pretty wild man. I appreciate you commenting that because I have really bad PVC's and palpitations in my heart and the palpitations didn't start until I started getting the arryithmias in 2020. I stopped watching the UFC years ago. I was involved in the business for close to 12 years. I trained and trained with many UFC fighters (first one was Rich Franklin) I've met Matt Hughes a few times (first time in Vegas and two more times in Chicago). the nicest guy in the world to meet. about 6 years ago now I got out of the business.. I still trained but I lost interest in the UFC brand.. including many others because how much the business has changed. to the point where it just wasn't fun for me anymore. Back to my point here.. I just learned about what happened to Matt, maybe 3 months ago.. it was a complete shock to me. I came across a video with him and at first I thought maybe it wasn't him.. that it was just someone that looked like him. once I figured out that it was him, my heart just broke.. the 2nd time I met Matt, was at a UFC press event and I sat 3 seats down from him and had many conversations during that evening.. great video by the way and sorry for the rant.. but seeing him now still shocks me for some reason. I'm just glad he seems happy and he's getting lots of help from friends and family.
Made in America (his autobiography) is one of the most atrocious books I've ever had the displeasure of discovering. Some of the stuff he admits is not only criminal but creepy. However, I believe he is both a legendary/ important figure in MMA's history, while also being a despicable human being. He was a big star early on with his contemporaries Bj Penn, Rich Franklin, Tito Ortiz and Chuck Liddell. He helped grow the sport and that can't be overlooked. Nor should we overlook his many shortcomings.
Imagine my dismay when I received his book as a gift from my ex-girlfriend. She overheard me saying I wanted to buy Forrest Griffin's book, and mistakenly bought Matt's abomination instead. Notice I said "ex-girlfriend."
It really sucks for him and his family. He woke up a completely different person. It isn't anyone's fault and it his family cannot be blamed for leaving. Sad situation.

@@Adam.Rushing I agree 100%. My wife's best friend's husband had an aneurysm that changed his personality. He became hostile, paranoid and eventually physical. He was just fine before, but she had to leave after 15 years in the marriage and 2 years after his recovery. He eventually learned to cope and deal better but it was too late as she had remarried a couple of years after.
@@soonerstingergtrwd2906 Oh wow man, that sucks! Well, you certainly do understand this subject better than most then! Are they classifying aneurysm's as TBI yet? If not, they really need to.
It's a touching documentary. He is definitely the greatest of his time in UFC history! We cannot judge him for the things he did specially after having brain injury. So let's keep the nasty comments out of this.
He abused animals and bullied people. His whole life before head injuries. I love him as a fighter but bullying hitting women and animal abuse. You know who starts out abusing animals serial killers. Bro he tortured animals to death. No mean comments. He can rot in and he will. He does not show remorse at all.
Yeah he's most definitely both His book is absolutely cringe and does nothing but stroke his own ago and make him look like a scumbag , still sad to see him like he is now I don't wish that on anyone
I suspect that a lot of professional male athletes who participate in contact sports are probably jerks. They are trained to be aggressive. You never see pansies participating in these types of sports. The trash talk alone is a fine sample of this disgusting behavior.
I truly shed a tear the day I read about his accident. I've had friends with severe brain injuries. It's far worse than the injury. It's a life sentence. I have no idea. I couldn't even imagine.
One of the classiest moments I have ever seen- across all sports, was when Matt Hughes clearly stated that GSP was just simply a better fighter than he was and that he couldn’t beat him. As happens so often with so many people in sports, they will come up with excuses for why the other person beat them. Matt Hughes refused to do this- said that he trained as hard as he could, was injury free, was fully prepared; it’s just that GSP was a better fighter. As far as I’m concerned, he was truly humbled and showed incredible strength of character in that moment. As for his personal life, I will leave that up to Matt Hughes and his family and friends to figure out. Regardless, I hope that whatever issues he and his family have can be worked through and that Matt and his family are able to live the best lives they can given the circumstances and are able to overcome whatever obstacles are in the way of that happening.
Nobody seems to want to speculate on his most questionable traits. It was pretty obvious to a few of us, that his accident was a suicide attempt. What about how he and his brother decided one to to take over the family farm by ganging-up on their dad and whooping his ass. That and the fact that his first girl.was, 14, when he was over 18.
June 2, 2020 I was in a near fatal car accident. I spent 2 months in a coma and 1 1/2 years in the hospital. 3 years of surgeries. I am so grateful I had no brain damage and that no one else was hurt. Please take it from me, wear your seatbelt. I hope he has some peace throughout the rest of his life, his family too.

I'm 31 now and do jiu jitsu because of my love of grappling which Matt was directly responsible for. Great documentary. I just have 1 critique, one of the facts was incorrect. As you stated, St. Pierre was coming off a loss to Matt Serra leading up to the 2nd Hughes fight. In fact the serra fight was after GSP had won the title from Hughes.

@jaypat7867 Give me a brake. Total fame news.

We are all human, and we've all committed unspeakable acts - at least by the time we're middle-aged.

Some of us get hit by trains and experience traumatic brain injuries - the after-effects can change us completely and scramble our realities, making redemption that much harder to find.

Read his book and I guarantee you’ll immediately change your mind about that piece of shit of a man. He’s truly evil. Pls at least read the summarized version of it.
Very well said
Boring
Look at Chris Benoit, TBI's and Roids turned him into a demon too.
Guarantee you internet search history makes Matt Hughes not such terrible person
TBI is no excuse for him, he’s truly evil. Legend to the sport, but he is not a man that should be respected. Idc how impactful he was in the sport.

Yeah right.
