What i loved about this Riddler is that though he was absurd, as were all of them, he was also, truly frightening. He was truly psychotic and still very, very scary. Truly sinister but also nutty as a fruitcake.
Gorshin never (or at least very rarely) played it for laughs - his Riddler wasn't just smart, but dangerous too. The writers hit upon the perfect rationale for Edward Nigma leaving what were basically clues, by turning it into a monomania that he couldn't help indulging, purely to prove his own genius. That was the beauty of the show - everything was absurd, but nobody ever acknowledged that.
@@wwb16 In the comics? Yes, from his very first appearance. In the show? ... I don't think any of the villains had their real name used, aside from The Mad Hatter and King Tut.
That's true but it makes me laugh, when I was a little kid he scared me the most. So it's true he also played the part as very evil and sadistic as well.
Gorshin was a genius! An amazing talent. Batman could not have been more campy but that was part of its charm. These actors truly poured themselves into their roles and their work will always be remembered!
Bar far the best, the part comes so naturally to him. His movements and gestures are a big part of it too, he's just so realistic as a comic book villain.
In this series, Riddler was the best villain due to Frank Gorshin. Not even Joker was as good in this series. At this time in the 1960s, Riddler was maybe a 3rd tier villain at best. Gorshin elevated him to become one of Batman's top 3 villains. Riddler went from a throw away character, to being the main antagonist in "The Batman" movie out now.
His talent is unmatched, he really IS The Riddler!! His movements and enthusiasm for being a criminal who outwits Batman seems so real they can't even draw a comic character to match him in the comic books.
I think the secret to Gorshin's success is the quick turns from maniacal glee to deadly seriousness. It is frightening! He seems to be a genuine threat; one who is completely unhinged. If it weren't for the camp nature of the show, he would cause nightmares! My fav!
Always the best villain, which is why he was the only one nominated for an Emmy. Unfortunately, we were cheated from some of his appearances because he held out for more money.
Yeah most criminals hide outs are in abandoned factories or museums, but the Riddler's hideout is the entire Gotham City sewer system! You never know where he's hiding or where he will pop up!
In most of the scenes, he's a giggly, comic, quirky, not exactly imposing riddle machine. But in that scene, with his tone and mannerisms, you get a glimpse of the dangerous, ruthless criminal he is at core.
Batman's producer William Dozier was absolutely brilliant when he cast the villains. Every one of the actors cast (Gorshin, Meredith, Romero etc) fit the part like a glove. Any of the movie version actors don't even come close to the TV actors who went before them.
0:02-0:06 maybe it’s because I grew up watching the 90s version of the the character, but I’d never thought I’d see the Riddler do something like THAT! Frank Gorshin’s riddler’s personality and laugh is so insane it almost rivals that of Mark Hamill’s Joker RIP to one of the greatest riddler actors, Frank Gorshin
No matter how down I can get Frank Gorshin's Riddler laugh and gestures make me smile !!! Look at the face of the actor at 2:43 who plays Whitie that sure looks like a real smile reacting to the laugh !!
Saturdays lineup of Westerns is the best; from 10am EST to 6pm EST leading right into the the 3 stooges, then Svengooli at 8pm then BATMAN at 1030pm. Worth the wait!

Not even Fassbender can pull off what Gorshin did. In this series, Riddler blew Joker out of the water. Paul Dano plays the current Riddler and not even his performance was that good. Jim Carrey wasn't as good either.
@@Jackson87RandomClips Well, I'm not exactly happy with this Riddler since I was an avid reader of the comics. They made him out to be a sadistic serial killer with riddles leaving Batman clues to the next victim. But I guess things are going towards trends now instead of true source material. The movie wasn't bad though. I just still appreciate Gorshin who outshined every other villain in that 60s series.

I would think so too but just remember that she’s probably shocked that a dude is a green jumpsuit just came out of nowhere just to leave through the stage trap door. I would have been so confused about how I just witnessed tbh. But I agree she should have slapped him hard
I love watching Frank play Riddler. He was having the time of his life
Easily the most unhinged of the villains from the TV series.
The best of the Batman villains in my opinion.
He nailed it with that laugh😅😅
Pops into some club, kisses one of the girls, pops out. What a crime!
I would have done the same thing, but maybe not in the Riddler suit. LOL,
I always found stolen kisses to be the best, even if she slapped me in response.
Supposedly his crime was stealing a priceless tierra.
Enough to rub the tussles of cancel culture these days …. I consider this Branson and risky if it was aired these days
Riddler was ahead of his time.

Fantastic actor, did a great job as The Riddler.

Frank Gorshin just made up the laugh in college for fun, he tried it out for Riddler here, first audition and it stuck with him.
I think he added a touch of his Kirk Douglas impression to when Riddler is serious, but played dramatically, not for laughs.
