Would you commute by E-bike? If so why? Let us know in the comments 👇

No. The e-bike itself would cost quite a fortune. I'll stick to my regular bike. I think regular bikes will save us even more money than an e-bike. 🤣

I would if and when I couldn't ride my muscle-powered bikes anymore. I understand if someone buys an e-bike instead of a car. Or uses one for their job. Less so if someone fit and healthy, or who needs to get fit and healthy, buys an e-bike instead of a normal bike.

I finally upgraded to an E-Bike for my commute and it has almost eliminated any excuse to take the vehicle. My commute is 12.5 miles (20km) each way so it was easy to say I didn't have enough time if I was running late in the morning or to get home in time for family night if I had a late meeting but with my E-Bike my commute is nearly the same time by bike or vehicle. As an added bonus I am fresher for those longer weekend rides on my Roubaix

The great thing about ebikes is that you can wear Lycra and push yourself hard and get a good workout, or you can wear jeans and a t shirt or your business clothes, let the motor do the work, and arrive with no sweat on you.
If you push hard, you’re pedalling a heavy bike on legs alone once you go over the motor’s cutoff speed (26kmh where I live). Makes for quite a workout!
An ebike got me back into cycling, I’ve since retired it and bought a road bike

Before the COVID crisis, I commute quite a lot on my Cube Kathmandu ebike. The daily commute was about 14km, and love the acceleration of the line in the city. Often the fastest form of transportation in The Hague. Sometimes the longer route, is the quickest when you know which traffic lights are a bottleneck. With decent suspension, disc brakes and lights it's quite a comfortable ride to work. And it is fun racing the trams in the city.

A couple of things I've not seen mentioned: 1. if you're wearing normal trousers on the bike, pant clips are helpful. 2. if your shoes have long laces, you might want to tuck the excess into your shoes to keep them out of the chainring.

Something for bikers in the US where I live is to splurge on a good helmet or a good light system that comes with lights on it for turn signals. Since we have to ride bikes with cars on the regular road, you want to alert cars behind you that you're turning.

    • @tconnolly9820
      @tconnolly9820 Год назад +1

Totally agree. If you are mixing it with every kind of traffic which I do because of lack of infrastructure, then you need to be able to communicate your intentions to the vehicles behind or around you.
I'm still on a normal hybrid bike but will go electric in the foreseeable future.
I have two motorbike mirrors on my handlebars so I can always clearly see what's coming up behind me from a long distance without having to look behind. When I am changing my position or lane I still will look behind to emphasise my communication with the vehicle behind.
I always have a daytime flashing front light and a good headlight for the dark.
Now on the back I am using a little Macgyverism of my own.
I have a 70cm length of 12mm (½ inch) light and flexible water pipe the same width as my handlebars attached to the back of my carrier rack with two pipe clips.
On either side I have a bright flashing 150 lumens tail light. This makes my bicycle look wider to traffic from behind day or night and encourages them to pass with a wider berth.
On the dull winter days and nights when in traffic I also use two really good separate right and left Bluetooth indicators to further emphasise my intentions when in traffic along with clear hand signals and glancing behind. They work great.
It doesn't matter how right I may be, if there's any misunderstanding of my intentions with a 40 tonne truck right behind me, there's only going to be one loser. And it won't be the truck.😢
The pipe is attached by two pipe clips which can be loosened with a few turns of a 7mm spanner and slid around on the carrier rack to lie flush along the side of the bike out of the way in half a minute.
I always wear a bright orange hi-vis vest and a helmet.
And I have racks front and back for baskets, crates and a variety of panniers for every occasion. Plus a couple of trailers for all kinds of really heavy or bulky cargo but that's a whole other story!
Many will say it's overdoing it but because there is virtually no safe or adequate cycle lanes or paths, I'm another smaller slower vehicle on the road amongst other traffic with the same rights to be there but also with the same responsibilities.
That's what I'm doing and I believe it helps keep me safer.
      Safe cycling everyone.

I bought the e-moped instead (Vespa looking type) no registration in Canada at 500w (Disconnect the limiter) now its like a 750w.
They have lock steering with alarm ,weight 200 lbs and hard to steal so you do not have to lock it to a post ever single stop, plus it can carry a lot of stuff without a wearing backpack all the time.
And the wide soft seat does not try to impregnate you.
Mind does 50 km range on a charge and it goes as fast as a young person on a 10 speed petaling his guts out.
I did buy the optional $700 20ah LifepO4 battery 5 years ago . Im buying the 30ah next time then im good for 70km.

Lots of new e-bike riders who ride they way they learned to drive- barely safe and counting on others to watch out for them. How about:
    1. On an e-bike, you are going faster than a regular cyclist usually, and when you are driving a car it is hard to gauge speed and distance of a cyclist. So watch for a driver pulling out in front of you, thinking they have plenty of time.
    2. Take out the ear buds. It is illegal in most states (not sure internationally) to ride with headphones on, it takes away your ability to hear cars. ("what about electric cars"? if you listen, you will hear them) Oh and the louder a car is, the quicker it is moving or accelerating, and the more you need to be paying attention.
    3. When overtaking, pass on the left and let the person know you are passing with bell or voice. You super win when you pass someone at velocity, but just let a body know, ok? Sure sucks to take someone by surprise who was just about to turn... into you!
    4. Helmets don't equal safety, situational awareness and the expectation that someone driving is not going to be looking for you can go a lot farther than putting a helmet on and thinking you are now safe. Helmets don't protect against neck injuries. Helmets don't stop traumatic brain injury. Learn to ride attentively and keep your helmet from impacting the pavement. New riders will get more personal protection from a good pair of gloves (you will usually fall and stick your hand out to stop you). Sure, wear a helmet too.
    5. bright clothing is great! lights and reflectors! yes! what happens when you are relying on your visibility instead of making eye contact? Is someone texting while driving again? Well it doesn't matter how visible you are when someone driving isn't looking at you.
Good luck. Riding is levitation of the spirit, and even an e-bike is exercise. Driving in cars makes you fat and lazy, and changes how you perceive the environment and other human beings. Get good at riding and be a better person.

The first actually useful comment on here. Nice.
A lot of very unexperienced (if any experience at all) riders hop on e-bikes nowadays. Safe cycling in itself is not an easy task but I find those people are a constant threat to themselves and their environment unfortunately. Too fast, too hard on the brakes, no signaling, no communication, nothing BUT constantly driving at 15mph everywhere, surprising other cyclists on busy roads.. Bonus points for headphones on both sides, or even noise cancelling over ear headphones, dark clothing and no helmet. Please don't be that e-biker. Thank you.

I bought a Cannondale Topstone gravel ebike which is a very similar spec and price to the Canyon. Both great bikes using the Bosch cx motor. Biggest reasons for me buying were, comfort, hill climbing and keeping up with my faster mates. I’m 62 and don’t think I want to be pushing my max heart rate by climbing some steep but short 14% climbs around here. Riding with my younger friends I don’t get dropped on the climbs and I can still keep up with them at higher speeds on the flats. I now have to work harder on the shallow gradients at faster speeds, however this is much better than my friends waiting for minutes at the top of the big hills. These bikes are super comfortable with big tyres, upright riding position and a bit of frame flex. You still need to work on an ebike, it’s never a free ride, you get back what you put in. The alchemy of the electronics of the Bosch motor are amazing, you are always pressing the pedals, you just find yourself going faster. You have to try one to understand it, but they’re great bikes, especially for older guys like me. I’m getting 100 miles per charge riding undulating terrain which is mighty impressive.

For a bike you use every now and hen don't leave it connected to the charger all of the time. Yes. Although any modern bike or equipment will properly disconnect the charger when it's full. Just don't leave the bike in 'standby' all the time.

@@marcb1289 my s-pedelec is unusable without power. I have to work like crazy to get it to 20kph with the engine off. But that's a crazy heavy beast :).
I use anywhere between 40% and 60% to get to work, so I have to charge there to get back home. It's recommended (by the manufacturer, dealer, and basic understanding of modern batteries, for my bike at least) that it's better to do more charge cycles when the battery isn't completely drained. In other words, charging a bit twice a day is better than charging a big chunk once a day. Most bikes also deliver more assistance and power when the battery is fuller, so charging at work and at home always gives me full speed.
There are people with the same battery already 4 years old and riding it daily (close to 2000 charge cycles), and it's still at >90% original capacity.
Don't leave the bike in standby-mode at the charger for weeks without being used ,and don't let the battery come close to completely-empty, and it can live a long nice time.
