In the 1950s it was impossible to make a movie like Terminator without it being a complete botch. It was already difficult to make it in 1984 with the special effects of that time, and now that film is seen with Schwarzenneger's very primitive animatronic tricks, so imagine 25 or 30 years earlier.
If the "present" part of the movie is set in the 1950s rather than 1984, and John is still conceived by Sarah's protector knocking her up, John would be in his seventies when he leads humanity to victory in 2029. Well, it's not completely impossible.
With the movie set in the 1950's, the nuclear war is in the late 1960's. Which is sort of what most people expected back then anyway... without the time-travelling robots.

The AI was quite undecided on just how Kyle's hair should look. The hairdo changed at least 3 times in the span of just 2.5 minutes.
