- An update on our Hydroponic Lettuce House, and answering a few questions from viewers.
Growing through the winter months can have it's challenges, but as we experiment, we learn what works and what doesn't.
Hope you enjoy, and feel free to ask away down in the comment section below!
I'm sure you know we all have been thinking and praying for you but I wanted to express my heartfelt thoughts for you and Ethan. Wayne meant so much to many of us. It was his passion and commitment in sharing your experiences with the hydroponic growing that inspired so many of us to follow along in your footsteps. Wayne was an inspiration for me and in fact because of your weekly videos walking us through your set up in the new greenhouse converting to slab media to harvest. It's because of Wayne and your sharing that I've acquired a new poly tunnel 25ft, the excavation and leveling take place in a couple weeks and then it will be built. The poly tunnel will be dedicated solely to hydroponic growing - slabs for my tomatoes, cukes and peppers as well as a couple projects growing root vegetables, onions, garlic and potatoes in hybrid Dutch buckets that will combine drip with wicking troughs. My plan for the poly tunnel, nutrient solution with 55 gal barrel/pump, slab set up is all because of Wayne's encouragement and knowledge. I'm thankful for his wisdom and your enthusiasm. I'm so happy you're continuing the farm business. Wayne's spirit will be with you along the way. Take the time you need...we look forward to your next video. Much love and prayers.
Wow, wow, wow - You guys are wonderful and so open and sharing. I'm a retired CFO, CPA and previously worked with by gardener dad and worked through college at a wholesale plant nursery. Now, I'm a small time hydroponics hobbyist at home. You guys have tied it all together for me with growing hydroponics and sharing so much data. It's great to hear an operations guy talk about the turntime, productivity (yield), revenues and experiment with costs. I bet you guys have some great spreadsheets. This is the only video that I've watched but I will watch more and I have subscribed. Can't wait to see if you installed the LED lights. Look forward to your analysis and payback talk about the lights. Keep it going.
these are still awesome awesome vids
I have never met such sharing folks, you have been so much help to me with my small hobby greenhouse, thank you
Awe, thank you so much! I'm happy to hear we are of help! Thanks so much for watching!
Hi. Thanks for your education on make these on youtube. You have inspired me and my family to star hydroponic farming next year. Thanks again with all your family working together.
Lovely🌳💜
A very good idea
Wow I could spend all day learning from you. You make it look so easy.
It is easy once you get the hang of it!! 😉
You guys are so generous with info surely you are blessed. Love you all and looking forward to the led video as with any from you all.
Thank you so much! Sharing what we have learned in the past 4 years, makes it so much easier for others to learn without searching all over the place, trying to find answers like we had to do when we started. It puts a smile to our faces when we know we have helped someone.😀 We are hoping to have a video up on the lights soon.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for watching!
My new favorite videos. So knowledgeable and explain so I can understand. I’m eager to try new things!

WOW this is some awesome information right here. Thank you so much for taking the time to share this with us. You folks always have some of the best things growing over there! One day I might try me some of those troughs to see if I can get some huge lettuce to grow. Thanks again for this video and hope you folks have a great week!
Thanks for the kind words CB! Yes, you should definitely try this system. Just like I have to try your straw bale system. Thanks for being Awesome! Have a great week, you two!
Awesome job , thank you for the information.. your greenhouse is very beautiful.. I just put a small fish tank heater in my tank to control my root temperature thru the winter ? Keep up the great work 👍⚡️🇺🇸
Thank you! Yes, a fish tank heater would work well, thanks for sharing this!
Thank you so much for watching! 😀
I was wondering how many seeds of basil per cube? And how many oz or lbs per tray you get ? Thank you .. 🇺🇸 yours looks so fresh and healthy 👍
I just love the way you share your knowledge for the benefit of others. Thanks!
Thank you for watching!
Awesome so glad I found you on you tube .Thank you so much for your time and wisdom, it is much appreciated!!!
May God Bless you and your famiy.
Wow guys, first time I have come across you. Thank you for being so generous with your knowledge. I am about to dive into this gardening lark. I have a little greenhouse on the way shortly with raised beds being assembled. It’s just for me and my family. So I will tune into u when I need more advice or tips. Thank you x
we have problem in Indonesia, we are hydroponics farmer, we use pvc pipe for planting and using Deep Flow Technique (DFT) for hydroponics, and the problem is, if we finish harvesting, we have to pull out one by one part of the pipe and the connection to clean the dirt, moss, and algae in it, maybe you can make a video tutorial on how to clean the pvc pipe without having to be opened, yesterday I saw it on youtube, he said to clean the pipe pvc without having to open, is using H2O2 with 30%, but we don't know how to measure and how to mix it, hopefully SPRING HILL FARMS can make the video, it will very very help us
Keep up the good work wonderful people. I adore what you do
I just found your channel today....what an inspiration that you can do so well in a northern climate... everything looks so organized and the plants are beautiful... I live in Northern NY and it gets pretty cold here, but you are about 200 miles further north than me... are the walls of your greenhouse double wall polycarbonate or polyethelene???? I can't imagine how much it costs to heat a greenhouse that large... thanks for the video/SUBSCRIBED... and just a side note... One end of my driveway exits onto US HWY 11..
Awesome and amazing green house. U guys are so very kind for sharing this information. Love It.
Take care and stay safe
Thank you so much! We love to share as we learn! Thanks for watching! 😀
Wow. If I had the room, I think I would try this. It even looks like fun.
It's alot of fun! 😀
Great and very informative video on the hydro update. Thanks for answering my question about the algae growth.
Thank you! I hope it helps you.. Thanks so much for watching! 😀
I have missed you guys! How crazy is it there? You go from tank tops to 4 feet of snow in a few days. Lights.... That is exciting! I am waiting on you guys to figure out a way to go vertical in that greenhouse.
Hello, thanks for sharing your valued information. I watched some of your videos and you really did give good information for beginners start their journey. god bless you.
I know there are a lots of questions but your videos little bit cut from some more information that required for your viewers. I like you to make a main video for all information required to grow in winter because summer time its always grow.
We have to start from beginning so we know its greenhouse.
1. what is the degree of heat that stays level in the green house for winter months like 21, 25 etc.
2. we know u are using oasis product to germinate seeds. Where do you get seeds how much you paying. what do you recommend.
3. for germination which products do you use and how much of it how often.
3. how much water how many times u are pumping for germinating platform.
after transferring them to growing platform
4. where did you get those growing pipes? how much each? and why those ones why not regular pipes? price? stability?
5. what fertilizers do you use and how much fertilizer?
6. which product how much for market?
7. most profitable crops that you can cut more then 5 times?
8. what do you recommend to newbies? do they need what you got in your green house, green house hoop? can they have same quality production by spending less in materials.
9. why not rack system with some led lighting for hydrophonic lettuce and some others crops. its way more space efficient more production?
10. what do you recommend for colder climates like -30 -40
I know you answered most questions in your videos but we like to see it in 1 video from start to end.
11. can you make this video for other crops like tomato, peppers, etc.
thanks
Very helpful, thanks.
God bless all 3 of you. I enjoy your videos so much. We just took delivery of 2 100 foot high tunnels and 98 channels from crop king. I wanted to ask you where did you get the white trays in the nursery station?
Steve Myers to me they look like the ones from Amhydro
We are modeling our hydro set up from you right now! This video was SUPER helpful thanks a million!
You should see how we did our LED lights!
This is so great to hear! We would love to see how you did your LED lights!
Thanks so much! I'm a home hydroponic gardener, using PVC downspouts to grow in. I noticed you don't plug the ends. How to keep the water in the tube, and how do you get the water back to the pump? Could you maybe show how you are hooked up? I just have not had very good results and your lettuce looks GREAT! I keep trying, but any help you suggest would be welcomed.
You guys are awesome !!
hello, love your channel you doing a great works, can you please explain to me what type of fluorescents light you use in the germination seedling processes? a regular one? what the lumens watts ? and another question, can i use a regular rockwool ( for the isolation)
thank you in advance
good day to you guys !! you have an amazing set up for your lettuces and other greens there on the farm !! thanks for sharing this awesome advice and information on it and how it works !! you guys rock !! 🌱👨🌾🎥👌✝
Thanks for watching Simon! 😀
Soooo wonderful is your greenhouse. Thank you for sharing in your hydroponics. Maybe you could make a very detailed video or pdf with tons of pictures of everything from water flow, additives, ph checking, troughs, heating and btu output, etc. etc. . The more details, the better as this would be for those starting from scratch. This you could sell so it would be worth your while. This way you will have less interruptions in your work. We would definitely buy it if you offered it. Keep growing those wonderful greens, thank you.
Nice job guys.
this is one of my favorite setups I've seen. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much! Thanks for watching! 😀
I just love your videos they are very helpful. I am planning to put up a similar system but here in Serbia i am worried a lot about the cost/price values since here the price of vegetables is very cheap and by installing all of this consumes Electricity, Nutrients, Maintenance when needed i am worried about that. From what i saw in US the head of lettuce can go over $1 while here the head of lettuce is around $0.25-0.30 and other plants same or bigger difference.
I would definitely like to see a video about the cost of this system and i think that would be extremely helpful.
Anyway keep up the good work, can't wait for your next videos. Much love from Serbia.
We will be answering your questions in today's video. Stay tuned and thanks for watching!😀
Keep up the great videos. You folks are very knowledgeable people
could you do an update video to this? this has great info and visual help for us in the greenhouse hydro business. going to try arugula and the beet leaf this week. the parsley, cilantro, dill, chervil and basil are doing great in this system. have a good one.
Great update! Everything looks amazing.
Love your' videos. From what I've seen out there Ya'all have set the Benchmark. Chasco Fish Co. in By God Port Rickey , Fla.
Thanks for doing the tore and answering the questions :)
Hi!
What do you use for heating the greenhouse?
What temperatures differences do you get in the winter? For example for this video, I see he is in a polo shirt, what was the aprox temperature inside and outside
Your greenhouse is build with double air blown polly? Or is just one single layer?
Thank you!
I was thinking the same thing 😂 already know how to grow just wanted green house specs and knowing what to expect with climate changes. New to the whole greenhouse growing don’t want to bite off more then I can chew especially just starting out!
Thanks for an informative video. Both of you do a wonderful job and are very generous. I am from Western Pennsylvania U.S. zone 6B and have a few questions. What temperature do you keep the lettuce house during the winter? Have you ever tried a static system i.e the Kratky method? How do you prevent spindly, leggy plants? In the winter, how long is the lettuce turn around? Thanks so much for your time and patience.
Thank you for the kind words! We keep our greenhouse at 58 degrees F through the winter months. We have not tried the Kratky method, but we may experiment with it some day.
Our plant never go spindly or leggy because we only keep them on the top heat table until they are starting to germinate, and then we lower them to the table under the lights. This keeps them compact.
Our lettuce turn around in the winter is around 6 - 7 weeks.
I hope this answered your questions. Thanks for watching! 😀
Spring Hill Farms Thanks. For the quick reply. Hope to stay more in contact with you. Stay warm this winter.
Thank you so much for sharing. My question to you is do you do any other veggies beside what we see (Melons, Cucumbers, etc)
new subscriber, I myself have started the process to building a green house to just what your doing here is Ohio. We get cold but not as cold as you guys. I'm looking to starting small and working my way up. Awesome video. And thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the awesome videos guys! You given me the inspiration and confidence to try a 20x36 greenhouse in SoCal. I’m building the greenhouse now. I’ll be watching all your videos for a 3rd time when I’m done :).
So happy to hear you are enjoying the videos. Thanks for watching!😀
Thank you for everything that you do on your channel. Could you let me know where you get the tubes that the plants are grown in? Thanks again.
Awesome information as always!! Great work!!! :)
Thanks so much! 😀
very nice
Your farm is my role model lol. Thanks so much for sharing one day gonna try to grow my own lettuce :D
great video
Nice video. Can I know what growing media do you use?
Beside that, in different stage of growing lettuce, it need different nutrient value of the EC and PH?
From your seed germination video, it’s use water for germination, after few day it’s started the nutrient water ? Do you have any guideline on growing lettuce with the nutrient level?
Very thorough and informative guys. Thanks for sharing it. :O)
Thanks Brent!
Thank You so much for sharing the knowledge!!!
Greetings from the 1000 Islands Region of Northern NY. What size grow channel do you use 4" or 6"? Love your videos and have learned so much rom them!
awsome work
im in barbados and now starting my hydrophonic lettuce system i wanted to know...do i need an air pump along with my regular pump for better growth
Hi !
Very interesting video thank you !
I get some additional questions.
You said you don't have any light infrastructure in your greenhouse, which lettuce varieties could grow even with small light intensity in winter please ?
Do you have only one water contain for all your infrastructure ? How many litters have this watter contains for how many square meters irrigate ?
What is the medium used ?
And I don't understand the controlled system for nutrients (Ec, pH) ? Is there a programmer ?
Thanks in advance,
Best regards,
Hugo
Oh I wish I lived closer .great info
Hi Patti. I wanted to know, can you tell me what are the organic nutrients you use in your hydroponic system, please? I am interested in trying a hydroponic setup but only if I can use organic nutrients.
Thanks for the advice. Love all your videos and wish you continued success in all you do. Can you also do a video on how you grow your herb pots please, if you haven't already done so. Thank you very much.
looking to by property around north bay ontario and doing this my self not only to self sustain but also a small buisness ill be watching all your vids. still on research stage
Wayne passed away in January 💔
The Farm will been sold as of August.
@@Growwiththelaplantes im so sorry to hear that, found your FB page and had a feeling thats what happened. But congrats on selling the farm. Just my timing that I was looking into this very kind of farming and then doing all this research stumbled on your channel then saw your FB page and was like omg half hour away. My timing is terrbile but best i might be able to scrounge up is 400K so not realistic for me to buy at all. But hope within 2 years to have a green house operation up and running. I would love the oppratunity to talk to you about feasability of this kind of buisness and living could i contact you on FB ? If not thats fine my inlaws are farmers down south and considering a course at canadore to take so will eventully figure it all out. Thanks again and sorry for your loss.
Great video.
Thank you!
Great update love it cheers 🍻
Thank you! Thanks for watching!😀
Another amazing video, you guys are amazing and inspired my girlfriend and I to start a small operation with hopes of expanding into the rest of our 7500sqf greenhouse, I’d love to hear more about arugula and beat tops !! We can’t grow enough of the arugula ever lol
Stay Warm!

We will be answering your questions in today's video. Stay tuned and thanks for watching!😀
Thank you for all your knowledge sharing x
If i got a supermodel to video my plants, i think mine would be as good as yours!
i did not get what the 18 to 22 was was that 1.8 2.2 ? very nice set up I would like to see the harvest of the beet tops. Or a winter and summer in same short video as far as temp water temp of green house. Thank you have a good year
Hey Guys, great videos! I do have a question, what do you use for CO2 generation in the winter?
What do you purchase for your hydroponic solution. I grow mainly leafy greens, but I am interested on what type of solution you use. I purchase the Master blend formula.
Great work !!!!! do you know an average of how much propane you use during winter ?
Thanks for the video - could i ask the temperature of your lettuce house and how do you heat it?
The temperature in the winter is held at 58 degrees F. In the summer we try to keep it at 70 degrees F.
We heat with propane.
@@Growwiththelaplantes thank you so much for your response
Wonderful.
Thanks!😁
You guys have an awesome setup. I'm trying to emulate it on a very small scale in my basement. Would you mind saying what those seedling trays are, or who makes them? Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge. I've always killed everything I ever tried to grow. Hydroponics is so much simpler than dealing with dirt, and sun, and all of the variables that come with growing outdoors. I'll admit, it's only been a couple of weeks, but I haven't killed anything yet. They actually look really good. Me, and everyone I know is amazed. ;)
Found the answer in another reply. Looks like American Hydro or Crop King sell the seedling trays. Thanks!
I did see the clip where you was seeding your cubes, was wondering if maybe you had adopted using a little funnel that you could stick down the opening. I have the same problem with big fingers, and I have found I can zip through the process. Well as long as I can keep track of where I set it.
Greetings, I'm Suchi
I really enjoyed your video. I have plans on constructing my own hydroponic farm. I would like to get in touch with you. How would I go about that? Thank you for your time
i really love the way you do this and i also want to try it in my garden but my garden is smaller i am thinking to use vertical hydroponic systems, have you ever experienced vertical farming like zipgrow towers ? and if you have please tell me why you prefer nft horizontal system
I could be wrong but I believe if you buy the 8 foot long or even 4 foot long tube leds that are daylight about 6000k spec it’ll be good for the vegetative growth in there. It’s basically the same type of bulb for a fluorescent fixture but the bulb is filled with insane leds you can keep it six inches from the lettuce. If you already bought some crazy leds I’m sure those are even better but just an idea if you want to consider it.
Hi what size is ur lettuce green house what size are your trays what do you use to heat your greenhouse with and what size is your heaters
Great video as always. I’m guessing you use propane heating in this green house in the winter. What is your propane monthly expenses and at what temperature do you keep this house? We are so blessed that you share your knowledge with us daily! We all wish you a great holiday season!
Thank you! Yes, we do heat with propane. Each month fluctuates as the weather does, but we generally spend appropriately 7,000 per year. We keep the temperature at 58 degrees F through the winter months.
We are always happy to share our knowledge with you all! We are blessed to have amazing viewers like yourselves to share this with! Happy Holiday season to you and your family as well. 😀
Is that 7000 for just you lettuce green house or all your house thru the winter?
Do you have heating in your glasshouse? I would’ve thought it would be too cold with your climate? Thanks
Yes, we heat the greenhouses with propane.
Hi, I just found you guys and am really grateful for all the wonderful info you share with us! I am new and to hydroponics and have a lot to learn! Can you tell me the size of your reservoir tank (I can't remember if you already said this somewhere and I missed it) Thank you!
I'm inspired to put my own green hydroponic. Thank you for knowledge, going to keep following your video and set up. Just wondering if you do fertilize the plant? or it's just a nutrient that you use.
Right on...
Thank you!
Gee I miss you guys 😢
I will be back doing videos soon.
You are my idols!!!!
Thanks so much for watching!
What type of channels are you using? Been trying to find those online but don’t know what they are called?
Was having germination issues with the oasis thanks for the info
Happy to help! Thanks for watching!😀
Hello. There was no feed back since last year regarding celery plantation. Any info on the growth, weight, final crop period and yield per trough?
Thank you
do you heat your water ? do you heat your greenhouse ? I am in Northern BC and looking into starting a similar operation.
PD. Ya he visto varios de tus videos.
what is the lowest nightly temp that allows you good adequate growth?
58 ° F. Is ideal, but I would say 55 would be safe
Awesome!
It would be great to hear about how you schedule your crops!
We will be answering your questions in today's video. Stay tuned and thanks for watching!😀
can you plz show how to make one of those thing majig pipe
Thé rack on the first tabletop that you took of the cover and the germination begun: will you put back the covers or not. Or if you transferring them on the other height?
Where do you purchase the BVB system from for you tomatoes
Thanks Eric!
Happy New year friends, love all your video, How the lighting project is coming along. Blessings
How long a day you leave the lights on ur new seeding
