  • YES: THIS IS A RE-UPLOAD
The original upload file was missing the testing portion of the video, and this channel is not big enough to qualify for live file swaps. I have unlisted the previous version. Sorry for any confusion!
In a recent video, I pulled several motherboards out of my collection, and after some testing, found then to at least appear to be fully functional. Not quite knowing what to do with them, I have decided this would be a great opportunity to use them as a learning experience, and maybe make some interesting content while doing so!
We're starting with the Pentium 4 motherboard, which although not the FIRST P4 ever released, had one of the first chips ever released that was designed to take advantage of the improved electrical design of socket 478. This is an excellent representation of a "fast" computer from 2001, and gives us a very good look into what kind of performance people could have seen back then. Unfortunately, my GeForce 4 collection is limited, so I decided to opt for an FX 5200, which is still a good representation of performance from around that time.
This video was fairly easy to make, as Windows XP is wonderful and easy to use. I can drag and drop offline installers for games from GOG, I can use Snappy Driver Installer to take care of all the drivers, and hardware compatibility is phenomenal. Next time, when we tackle the Pentium 3, we will be stepping back with the operating system, though I have not decided if it will be Windows 98, or Windows 2000. Either way, I do at least have SOME experience with installing those operating systems, so it won't be a completely new experience. However... We will be jumping back to Windows 95 with the Pentium 2, and all the way back to Windows 3.1 with the Pentium 1. Let's hope those videos won't be TOO painful to make, as I have limited experience with installing anything older than Windows 98!
