    We sang "Walking in the Air" in my choir when I was in high school. Last year my choir teacher died from a subdural hematoma at only 38, and we were shocked. A few of his students were asked to sing at his memorial at the school, and I was asked to sing "Walking in the Air". Now I can't see The Snowman without bursting into tears, and so I'm sitting here bawling at the countdown when I'm supposed to be happy. I'm glad you put it so high, Doug. It's a beautiful movie with an exquisite song that makes me think of angels...

  • @ActiveAdvocate1
    @ActiveAdvocate1 6 лет назад +56

    PS: With "The Snowman", the boy who sings "Walking in the Air" was chosen by the directors, ALL of them unanimously, out of an English boy's choir. They all just kind of pointed, like, "third boy up, second from the left". He has such an incredible voice though, I can see why. Took me forever to learn to play it on piano too, it's very intricate.

    • @thecinematicmind
      @thecinematicmind 5 лет назад +5

      SoulFire39 Sadly many people in the UK think Aled Jones was the original singer when he did a cover version for a Toys R Us commercial.
      The only reason outside of that people don’t know Peter Auty sang it was the makers accidentally forgot to credit Peter Auty in the credits until it was the 20th Anniversary.

    The thing about 10: I have to really credit the scene with Grandma while everyone's having their party. Christmas is so often focused on kids, the kids point of view, the kids being the focus of the family, etc. But Garfield, by gum, had the most touching look at the holiday from the older generations who have learned WHY that family-centric attitude is so important, and as a kid I always found that the most drawing part of the special, aside from Garfield himself, of course, and I still do.

    Even I though I completely agree with him that the ending was too depressing, I can't but think a positive light to it. What if the director added a message into the ending which was no matter how much fun you had, all good things must come to an end. The boy had probably the greatest night he ever had, but sadly snowmen can't last forever.

A grandfather in modern times tells his grandson the story of how, on Christmas eve, a contingent of US and German soldiers happen to converge on his and his mother's cottage as the Allied forces encroach on German positions, and are made by the mother to put aside their weapons and spend the night together.

    The ending of The Snowman really is so sad. Idk, I've watched that short film many times, at different points in my life, and when I was little, I was just kind of like, "Huh, what a bummer... Oh, well." And then as a teenager, it starting to wreck me lol. It became hard to watch without tearing up, like the ending to Homeward Bound (except that Homeward Bound is more of an emotional rollercoaster -- but the chest-constricting "oh shit I'm going to cry, this is making me feel so many things about life and time and childhood and shit ahhh" feeling is similar).

Yes, but the Joseph of the bible would have not stoned Mary, even though the thought probably crossed his mind. Other than that, I totally agree with the critic about why the film wasn't received well. It's not a bad movie regardless if you're a believer, or not. That's just me though.

    The Nativity is my favorite story. The BEST telling of THE Christmas story, period. For me, it would be at the top of the list, but it's good to see it here.
    The Snowman outstrips Frosty the Snowman by a gajillion miles. There's a real heart to it, opposed to the over the top sweetness of the rankin/ bass animated sugar over-dose. Between Frosty ... and Rudolph I want to make reindeer steaks and stick that singing snowman in a sauna.
    P.S. I recognize the laugh. And if I didn't know it was YODA, I'd swear GROVER was playing tricks on NC by hiding under the table.

    I remember Black Adder (the Christmas special and the series) was on Netflix at one point and I really hope they put it back on. I seriously couldn't stop watching it. Adkinson is the greatest actor ever.

      Blackadder is Atkinson's best role imo, and also the best sitcom in history. I wish it got more attention outside of Britain it's criminally underrated. Compared with Blackadder American shows like Friends don't even seem to know the meaning of the word comedy.

      What's amazing about Blackadder is that all the jokes are really obvious, you know exactly when they're going to land and what they'll be, but they're still REALLY funny anyway!

    I'm very happy to see how many people love The Polar Express. I love it, too. I think the visuals are the biggest reason, but I also love how it shows the different feelings the 3 main characters have to Christmas. And, of course, it's easy to fully immerse yourself in it. I like Arthur Christmas a little more, but The Polar Express is definitely a favorite of mine

    Elf was kind of meh. Will Ferrel is hilarious and I think this is the first time I ever saw Peter Dinklage. I never watched the Garfield christmas special but I saw the end of it. I loved Polar Express as a book and as a movie, I always thought the music was amazing and the northern lights were so amazing. That Black Adder thing sounds like the most aggressive Christmas special ever. I love Gremlins, I saw part of it and I thought the sequel was hilarious. I heard of that Christmas of WWI story and I thought that more people should learn from that story and that their superiors should have taken a page from their example. I think I read the Snowman as a book and I had no idea it was a cartoon. And if Die Hard counts as a Christmas movie, than Iron man 3 counts as one too.

    once, my family drove all the way out to charlotte to see The Polar Express on the big screen (and believe me, this was a huge screen, so big that there was a huge vacant space in front of it because nobody would sit that close to a giant screen) because it's our Christmas classic, a tradition, my brother still tries to persuade ma and da to get a Christmas train around the tree, but I remember when I saw it on that big screen, every flake of snow felt so real, even though i was so young i remember the snow so clearly. I think it's worth watching even on the small screen tv.

    You know, I actually would have been interested to see what Catherine Hardwicke did with the rest of the Twilight movies. While it's obviously... you know, Twilight... the first movie has a different vibe than the rest. And the first movie is the only one that's directed by a woman. Could have been interesting, in another world.

      If the books had been in any way decent, maybe the movie could've been something. Alternatively, if the movie had completely ignored everything about the books and just been its own thing, it could've been something. Alternatively, if Catherine Hardwicke had just directed a completely different movie and Twilight hadn't existed, it could've been something.

    The 5 Qualifications to be considered an ACTUAL Christmas movie (all must be met):
    1. Santa shows up. (Santa costume counts)
    2. Has at least three Christmas songs. (Christmas-based originals count)
    3. A Christmas gift is opened.
    4. There is a decorated Christmas Tree.
    5. A change of heart must occur, for the better.
