Lyrics:
"O Mrs. McGrath, " the sergeant said
"Would you like a soldier of your son Ted?
With a scarlet coat and a big cocked hat
Now Mrs. McGrath would you like that?"
With your too-ri-aa, fol-did-dle-di-aa, too-ri-oo-ri-oo-ri-aa, too-ri-aa, fol-did-dle-di-aa, too-ri-oo-ri-oo-ri-aa
Now Mrs. McGrath lived on the shore
And after seven years or more
She spied a ship come into the bay
With her son from far away
"O Captain dear where have ye been?
You been sailing the Mediterranean?
Have you news from my son Ted?
Is he living or is he dead?"
With your too-ri-aa, fol-did-dle-di-aa, too-ri-oo-ri-oo-ri-aa, with your too-ri-aa, fol-did-dle-di-aa, too-ri-oo-ri-oo-ri-aa
Then came Ted without any legs
And in their place two wooden pegs
She kissed him a dozen times or two
And said, "My God Ted is it you"?
Now were ye drunk or were ye blind
When ye left yer two fine legs behind?
Or was it walking upon the sea
That wore your two fine legs away?"
With a too-ri-aa, fol-did-dle-di-aa, too-ri-oo-ri-oo-ri-aa, with a too-ri-aa, fol-did-dle-aa, too-ri-oo-ri-oo-ri-aa
With a too-ri-aa, fol-did-dle-di-aa, too-ri-oo-ri-oo-ri-aa, with a too-ri-aa, fol-did-dle-di-aa, too-ri-oo-ri-oo-ri-aa
Now I wasn't drunk and I wasn't blind
When I left my two fine legs behind
A cannonball on the fifth of May
Tore my two fine legs away
"My, Teddy boy, " the widow cried
"Yer two fine legs were yer mother's pride
Stumps of a tree wouldn't do at all
Why didn't ye run from the cannon ball?"
With a too-ri-aa, fol-did-dle-di-aa, too-ri-oo-ri-oo-ri-aa, with a too-ri-aa, fol-did-dle-di-aa, too-ri-oo-ri-oo-ri-aa
With a too-ri-aa, fol-did-dle-di-aa, too-ri-oo-ri-oo-ri-aa, with a too-ri-aa, fol-did-dle-di-aa, too-ri-oo-ri-oo-ri-aa
"All foreign wars I do proclaim
Live on blood and a mother's pain
I'd rather have my son as he used to be
Than the King of America
And his whole Navy!"
With a too-ri-aa, fol-did-dle-di-aa, too-ri-oo-ri-oo-ri-aa, with a too-ri-aa, fol-did-dle-di-aa, too-ri-oo-ri-oo-ri-aa

Sitting with earplugs in train. Have to take care to not singing loud 😂. Wonderful, Thank you so much ❤️🙏🏻!
For anyone interested but unaware of the context, the song is portraying the Napoleonic Wars, as seen through the eyes of an Irish mother whose son has joined the British Royal Navy, Napoleonic Frances most resolute enemy. The last lyric is really, “King of France,” changed here by Springsteen as, “King of America,” (though I don’t know why).
Invasion of Iraq etc.
Bruce Springsteen is a genius. Spends a lot of time in Dublin. Sometimes drinks in the Long Hall and Whealans. He loves Ireland and we love him. What a fantastic person and a wonderful human being. What a treasure
But.. don't forget his last name is clearly Dutch! ;)
@@Seadweedhis last name maybe Dutch but of Irish decent.
He's German Irish
This song is so underrated
OMG Bruce O'Springsteen! What a master!
I remember buying this cd for my dad we listened to it together before he died
My parent played this song at their wedding I’m 97
irish folk Music works with any kind of Music thats why its so good !
even better than the album version... gives shivers all the time! wonderful performance!
All kiddin aside when you have cancer music is your angel
Brucie sure turned this song quite a bit more in a sombre direction. The original was almost whimsical. The guy is amazing. Hey, it's St. Paddy's Day 2022! Erin Go Bragh!
Thank Mr Springsteen for that wonderful album DVD live in Dublin with sessions band
Masterpiece ! I love it so much. The lyrics, the musical variation on a traditionnal song, this is so serious, so immersive, so tensed and powerful
Best of the Irish-influenced Songs.
this song gives me chills every time
the best singer and musician love you
I would have loved to see him perform with the Dubliners. Could you imagine Bruce Springsteen Ronnie Drew and Luke Kelly. WOW
I'll never forget when i heard this song for the first time. Shock! Love it!

Savage lyrics written hundreds of years ago would still apply today
Savršeno Brus. Predivno kralju. 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰.
I grew up with the traditional version of this song so it would easy to criticize Springsteen’s version but he kept it true and honest. Over the 200 years since it’s been written artists are still evolving it and sadly kids are still dying on battlefields all over the world.
From one mcgrah yo another...hands across the sea..🏴🇮🇪🍀
Tour ey ae fol diddle de day
I grew up with a quicker paced, folksier version. My sister would play this on the guitar for me when I was little. This is a butt kicking version.

I almost cry at these lyrics....
'Well I wasn't drunk and I wasn't blind
When I left my two fine legs behind
But a big cannonball on the fifth of May
Flow my two fine legs from the knees away'
'Ah Teddy me boy', the poor widow cried
'Yer two fine legs were yer mummy's pride
Them old stumps of a tree wouldn't do at all
Why didn't ye run for the big cannonball?'
Sometimes, there's nothing that you do to stop the bad things from happening.
Sometimes, you come to grips with it....but other people can't and they blame your for their lack of understanding.
I know I've done that to others.
Others will likely do it to me.
God Bless.
We can all find our way and we will all fine our understanding someday....
Sometimes we take even the hardest punches on the chin with little to no complaining, that those around us wonder if those punches are even that painful.
Your comment sums it up nicely. It's what I've felt all along but not being able to come up with the words myself; you get it, buddy! 👏
staggering to think it was written and sung by soldiers 200 years ago
Me and my dad love this song.
I reminds me of Bere Island real Irish 🇮🇪🇮🇪
I'm listening the full performance, hear the audience booh now and then.
There are things I can't understand, however I try
What is so hard to understand with this topic? War is a crime and every politics, doctrine and betrayal propoaganda or misleading religion that leads to and fuels war.
Super konzert
Mrs McGrath is my history teacher. 💀
Long Live The BOSS
The best
Lenda viva!!! Sem igual
The boss! Happy belated 70th birthday for Sept 23 2019
For the great Gaels of Ireland
Are the men that God made mad,
For all their wars are merry,
And all their songs are sad.
IRELAND 🇮🇪
ENGLAND 💩
HEE. Kid you know how Springsteen is? Yes its that Born in the USA guy.. well Noo. its that Live in Dublin dude
♥️
"...sadly kids are still dying on battlefields all over the world." PEACE in Ukraine! Stop this inhuman war, please!!!
My uncle served under Patton
He loves Guinness. Who wouldn't
Uncle Ted traci is tellin lies
Republic of Doyle brought me here
No está subida al castellano?
Fuck war.
Ask a vet about it ww1 no one’s there Ww2 talk to me
Well done but a corruption of the traditional 200 year-old anti-war song . . . “king of France” changed to “king of America”.
Apologies to all his fans but this has to be the worst crucifixion of a fine Irish song I have ever had the misfortune to endure. God rest the Dubliners.
Its an excellent version of the song
Wow
