  • Aphids versus Diatomaceous Earth under the Microscope.
    I found a huge number of aphids hiding on a pepper plant leaf, and having been recommended it by a few different people, I thought I'd take a look and see what kind of effect diatomaceous earth would have against them.
    I recorded 9 hours of footage from the microscope and then accellerated it to 100x playback speed so that I could watch the results.
    There's also a quick greenhouse update to show how the plants have been coming along over the last two weeks.

    Per the company...
    Depending on the size of the insect, it normally takes 12-24 hours for an insect to die once it is exposed to DE insecticide. (The larger the insect, the longer it will take to die.) When using DE as an insecticide, it is important to strategically place the powder where the insects reside to ensure that the insect brushes against the powder and is eventually eradicated.
    It does really suck anything out - it just dries up.
    DE is 80-95% comprised of silicon dioxide, and silica is typically found in quartz (see above), sand, and other living organisms. Silica is a desiccant which means it can be used as a drying agent. This drying action works very well when used as an organic insecticide. It physically abrades and absorbs the waxy outer coating of the insect which results in rapid death by dehydration.

    Please be careful breathing the D.E. From what I understand it looks like shards of glass under the microscope, and is effective in killing the insects by cutting their undersides as they move across it.They then dehydrate and die. Breathing it can also cut our human lungs. On the upside, I have put it in my dog's water to control worms and parasites, and I have put it in my smoothies as well. This is exclusively Food Grade D.E. that I am talking about.
    Strangely, it does not harm earth worms, and that is very good.

    I don't think your desiccant mechanism of action is the correct explain, or at least it isn't complete. The diatom bodies under stronger magnification look like serrated circular knives that easily pierce and cut the carapaces of insects like aphids, ants, and even bees. They need that waxy exoskeleton to retain their internal moisture. Once that barrier is compromised, the air itself will dedicate them rapidly. Of course, an additional desiccant in the environment speeds that process along further. Another reason I don't think DE is a good desiccant is that a lot of gardeners actually mix DE with water in a spray bottle to evenly disperse the powder. The water eventually evaporates and leaves a fine film of DE to ravage pests. Unfortunately, it affects all insects indiscriminately and may lead to bee die-off if used in mass quantities.

    If you put shade cloth (at least 30%) and increase humidity, you will considerably decrease spidermites. In addition, using plain water in a sprayer with a nozzle that really shoots the water out pointed over and under the leaves ..will help wash away aphids and mites. It is my understanding though I haven’t checked with bug guy who knows these particular insects - once they hit the ground, most can’t crawl back up - stay where they were born basically until mature. Need to be on the plant to mature.
    Per most neem oil products, they state to not mix with adjuvants which are spreaders, stickers, extenders i.e. soaps. They recommend late evening usage, and not on stressed, wilted etc plants.
    I don’t like neem - it burns very easily and it is toxic to bees and nearly non toxic to fish and birds but you are warned about it running off to drains and waterways and standing where birds might drink. Just the bees is enough,to make me not use. Our bees are under attack from colony collapse caused by the varroa mite and exposure to numerous chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, etc.including the neurotoxin Imidacloprid the most widely used pesticide in the world - check the active ingredient on your bottles.
    If you use insecticidal soap - why are you mixing neem oil. However, if you are using regular dish soap - they have many chemicals that are harmful to plants particular when exposed to direct sun and heat. People see Dawn used to wash ducks and think it is safe for everything....it isn’t. They use a special dawn - the unscented, non antibacterial, etc. And most people use too much dish soap - it is just to act as a wetting agent i.e. a couple of drops in a gallon,of water will do it. If you have to use some household product - use a non scented baby shampoo. But Spend a few dollars - buy a safe purpose made insecticidal soap and use as directed - not how you think it should work.
    Keep in mind - most horticultural oils recommend using out of bright sunlight and in cooler weather i.e. why we spray our trees and shrubs in the late fall and winter once the leaves are off so we can spray the branches where the egg masses are and not burn our leaves up.
    From a neem oil label (Safer brand) ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS www.gardensafe.com/products/fungicide/neem-oil-extract-concentrate.aspx
    Do not apply directly to water. Do not contaminate water when disposing of equipment washwaters or rinsate. To protect the environment, do not allow pesticide to enter or run off into storm drains, drainage ditches, gutters or surface waters. Applying this product in calm weather when rain is not predicted for the next 24 hours will help to ensure that wind or rain does not blow or wash pesticide off treatment area. Rinsing application equipment over the treated area will help avoid runoff to water bodies or drainage systems.
    BEE HAZARD: This product is toxic to bees exposed to direct treatment. Do not apply this product while bees are actively visiting the treatment area.

I am applying D.E. mixed with water in an asortment of spray bottles (I've even ordered rechargeable sprayers too) to outdoor fruit plants and flowering plants loaded with aphids. The best thing D.E. has going for it, IS THAT IT doesn't hurt the plants, unlike stuff like Sevin. Delivering D.E. mixed with water, leaves a visible coating, once the water dries & it appears to slow down the "bug feast".

    • @dawnsmith5691

      If DE gets wet then it’s not effective, correct? How would mixing it with water help anything? It’s whole purpose is to get in their exoskeleton and dehydrate them. How would it do this if it were wet? It wouldn’t, right? I’m asking because I’m truly curious. I’ve been using it for pest control and it works beautifully but every instruction set I’ve followed says to reapply after rain or after watering because water essentially renders it useless. If you’ve had luck mixing with water that seems to me like an easier and less time consuming process as it wouldn’t need to be constantly reapplied or monitored for rain/water/dew drops making it ineffective. I’d just like to hear how it’s done or what your experience is??

    • @FreefallSC
      @FreefallSC Год назад

      @@dawnsmith5691 my understanding is that it becomes effective again once it dries out. The rain just washes it off of the plants is why you want to reapply after rain. Hi Michel Laine - Well.. it certainly didn't have the effect I was expecting at the start of the video - I was thinking that I'd see the aphids shrivel up as the diatomaceous earth absorbed the moisture from their bodies, but there was no sign of that happening (except perhaps for the aphids shedding their skins earlier than they normally would), but it was clear at the end of the microscope footage that the very young aphid was having a terrible time of it all. Aphids are very short-lived, so I'm assuming that the way it works is by making it impossible for the babies to feed and grow, meaning that all the aphids will die off in a few days time - You'll have to wait a couple of week's (as will I) for the next greenhouse update to see if it worked on the pepper and butter bean plants though. Cheers!!

    If you use the Bonner's peppermint soap diluted a bunch in the spray bottle the aphids and spider mite go off quite well . I use it all the time and then rinse it in a little while so as not to burn or build up residue. Sometimes I don't rinse and things seem to be alright anyway.This is the liquid soap I mean I haven't tried a bar soaked up. I get it at the heath store.

    Don't want to sound salty or negative to a fellow technically minded Englishman though I do believe the sea bed has already been devastated by such extraction and that it is an essential ecosystem for our entire environment. Any move away from the poison that is roundup and the like is still welcomed and maybe one day we will see a night time refrigeration system which both knackers the arthropods and increases growth rates by a greater difference in respiration and photo respiration temperatures. Modern refrigerants mean a very economic chiller system too, so.....all the best and thanks for the vid

    Do they come from the sea only or from fresh water as well? Are they always white? ... can it be yellowish? Are they found all over the world or only in some places? Are there different grades? - and if so, what determines the difference? I live in Chiangmai, Thailand and no one seems to know what Diatomaceous Earth is!

      Hi Virginia - I'm afriad I don't know for sure the answers to most of those questions. Wikipedia tells me that they're a major group of algae and among the most common type of phytoplankton, and that they grow in fresh and sea water, but beyond that, I'm afriad I've no idea about different grades or colours. Sorry. Cheers!!

    I bougut a bag of Fox Farms Ocean Forest and put a germinated seed in, a day later when my seedling came through the dirt I noticed some type of white mites crawling on its first leaves and panicked. I ended up reading about DE, and immediately bought a bag and dusted my seedling and topsoil. That was about 5 days ago now and i have not seen another bug since. I will be appling another dusting tomorrow or the day after and again in another week just to make sure any eggs that may have been laid hatches and the DE kills it. In short, THIS STUFF WORKS. I DEFINITELY RECOMMEND TO ANYONE HAVING BUG ISSUES WITH THEIR PLANT.

    The problem with THE MUSIC, is an individualized issue. Some of us, growing up, would read a book laying on the floor, while the radio and/or tv were playing. Some would have to read their books in total silence and I get that too.

    I use DE on the ants that farm the aphids. It cuts their exoskeleton, especially in the joints. They go back to the nest and die, contaminating other ants that have to remove the carcass. If you want ants to disappear, dust them with DE.

      Hi Ese - Not at all. I'm just curious by nature and have a lot of hobbies. I have a microscope for doing electronics work (another hobby) and was curious to see what effect DE had on the aphids and whether it would be an effective control for the greenhouse. I haven't used DE on the plants this year, but sprinkling it on the greehouse floor seems to have stopped the ants from bringing aphids in as ants really really hate DE. Cheers!!

      Thanks Patrick Meehan - It was fascinating for me to watch all the footage at 100x speed after I'd shot it, and to finally see the secret lives of the aphids, shedding their skins and pooping their ant food. Both the pepper plants, and the butter bean were sprayed with Neem oil two weeks ago, so I was rather surprised to find them crawling with insects when I came back from holiday - I was really expecting the Neem to have had more of an effect. Sooner or later I'll find a solution which works effectively though. I'm very pleased with the tomato cutting, and started another two cuttings after I'd finished shooting the video. Hope all is well in your bit of London. Cheers!!

      Jim Conner Jim Try spraying neem every 3 days for 2 weeks ...Neem only lasts a few days before it breaks down .... and the bugs reproduce quickly ... you need to treat several times to make sure you interrupt the life cycle completely.... follow my advice and you will be bug free ... then spray 1 a week as a preventative measure ... bugs do not build up resistance to neem ... prevention is better than the cure ...

    • @ThingsWhichArentWork
      @ThingsWhichArentWork  9 лет назад

      Hi GreenEvolutions - I'm trying to be better at pest control (hence ordering neem oil and diatomaceous earth a couple of weeks ago), but due to work commitments, I've been struggling to get enough time in the greenhouse during the week. I've had pumps break, reservoirs run dry and bugs all over the place this year and the plants have suffered badly as a result. I'll see if I can stick to the schedule you suggest. Thanks for the tip. Cheers!!

    • @GreenEvolutions
      @GreenEvolutions 9 лет назад +1

      Jim Conner Totally understand Jim ... I get called away from my farm all the time and it is guaranteed that that is when something will go wrong... But here is a fun project for you, to tie together a few of your inventions .... Your hi pressure water pump, some greenhouse misters strategically placed, one of your auto dosers .. and maybe a solenoid or two for freshwater or dump valve for residue .... and a timer or an arduino to control it ..... Neem needs to be mixed fresh for each application .. and a fresh water spray is always a good thing once a week ... I bet you could have it mix other foliar sprays for you as well like seaweed and garlic ... most pests don't like getting wet all the time .... and plants love to get rained on to wash them off .... love your technical stuff ... way over my head with the electronics most of the time ..... but I have been in the bug wars for years now ... and the most important secret with natural organic pest control is to start using it before you see bugs ... I grow year round and have found over the years, it is the only way keep them under control ,, its not one battle ... it is an never ending war ..... spray as often as you can .... and rinse with fresh water every few days ... you will never have a problem again .....

      That's a superb idea GreenEvolutions - I've already got all of the parts I'd need to make an auto-mixer-sprayer device. I'm going to add that project onto my very long to-do list in the hope that I get around to it one day. Thanks for the idea. Cheers!!

    I'm not surprised by this. I live in an area with those big tree roaches that get in no matter what, I've tossed both borax and DE on them, DE does nothing, but Borax works great killing them. I dont know if borax is good for gardens, but if I ever have a need, I'll look into that and use it long before DE.
