Mortal Kombat: A Nostalgic Dive Into An Iconic Video Game Movie

  • Look, the history of video game movies, both at the beginning of its run and currently, is spotty at best. You had bad then and you have bad now and while you can get some more indie games being made into movies or at least studios taking more chances with what ips they decide to use now, back in the early 90s it was only the best of the best and the most popular that would be turned into movies. Mortal Kombat came along and changed everything, at least momentarily! And boy, is it hard not to scream that at the top of my lungs whenever I say it.

What would an A-list movie treatment of this be like today? With top writers, fight choreography, stunts, cinematography etc, and with, say, Ryan Gosling as Cage, that kind of casting. It'd be frikkin cool! Look how the Kano actor smashed that role the last MK movie, he was so fresh and funny.
And ONLY have the original Techno Syndrome as the intro, to really pump the audience like no other song could! And *_maybe_* also use it for the awesome fight intros like the OG did, sparingly!

Christopher lambert was a great Raiden. If it wasn’t for Highlander, he might’ve not been cast in the movie. It’s ironic because big trouble in little china was made the same year as Highlander, and inspired mortal kombat especially with some of the characters spawned raiden. Also Kurt Russell was considered for the lead role in Highlander but turned it down and did big trouble in little china instead and Christopher lambert got the part. And also Paul Anderson who directed mortal kombat 1995 directed an action sci fi movie with Kurt Russell 3 years later from Warner bros called soldier.

It's somewhat of a common thing in the internet, to try to call this MK a "b movie flick". I don't really get where does it come from. The movie is certainly professionally made, shot, cast, it has a pretty impressive production value, even if it's not a blockbuster with overblown budget, it ain't cheap either. A good, healthy midrange budget, which contemporary movies need to start learning to follow again. Beautiful location shots and decorations, visual effects, that are carefully balanced between practical and CG ones, were excellent back then, but mostly do look pretty good even now. Not to mention that it had its wide theatrical release, and has made a notoriously good box office. Why so many people tries to detriment from movie's qualities by trying to label it a "b movie"? Where does this come from?

    • @rolmodel12.

Couldn't agree more: soundtrack was THE best part of this movie. Driving techno mixed with some industrial metal. Not quite as iconic as The Crow's soundtrack. Or as good as Tales From the Crypt: Demon Knight's soundtrack. But, DEFINITELY a 90's classic. Good stuff (still have the CD, in fact).

    • @peterludwig4599

@@Bogdaman2 In my country mostly because of Paul Anderson. All of his movies are regarded as b movie tier here. But what is a B movie and what Mainstream? The line is very thin. Roger Coreman did a lot of movies that reach the quality of MK and are also b movie tier. This is not something negative.

I'm Asian by the way and seriously hate race swap like this for DEI purpose. Kano's portrayal is so memorable in the first MK movie the games actually use the character's accent from the movie. Christopher Lambert's Raiden is also a DLC character in MK11.
