This might sound silly, but as a young woman, I look at these two and can finally see through the veil of ageism in our culture. These women are beautiful and strong, and wear their age well. They inspire me to live in a healthy and cheerful way and help me to recognize that life doesn't cut off after 30, or 50, or even 70. There is always more to look forward to and it can get better instead of worse.
A lot of our ageism is from living location transient lives driven by college and job relocating. Gone is Gram lives either across town, or living in the same house. We're also living silo'ed, by age, by income and by profession. Gone is everyone from President/VP, to white collar, to manufacture, to janitor, in the same building. Zero relationship between the groups now, splayed across the country if not the planet. We're going to have to fix what we've broken, what you've inherited. Straight out of the movie Animal House, We f'ed up, we trusted them.
It’s not silly it’s a wonderful insight! They r ageless role models. Imagine if young people acted more like these two- refined, yet silly, demure, yet always youthful. A perfect balance without the ignorant attention seeking falseness of modern youth
I began searching about them after i’ve watched GRACE AND FRANKIE. They have changed my melancholic view of life being old. I suddenly realized that am still young at 53 and can be vivacious! I want more tv series of them😍
Me too!! Let's demand more mature entertainment. I'm sooo tired of shows featuring abuse of women as entertainment---such as the cop shows...Law and Order, etc.

Ricardo Silva well, maybe because in my workplace, i am the oldest being 53 back then. But now that i am 55 and not working because i was locked down here in my country, i feel so young with my grown ups children and two grandbabies😍 thanks for reminding me, i’m not that old yet😍
These women have given older women a new landscape and I for one, am enormously grateful to them both. The layers of this friendship that we watch evolve in their later years, encourage us all to keep going and remain open to changing no matter how old we are. Thank you both with all my heart.
You can see how they embody exactly what they’re saying in their own friendship with each other. They’re incredibly candid but respectful, kind and caring for the other. Their body language alone shows how comfortable they are with each other and how much kindness and love is in their friendship. Female friendship is such a blessing indeed ❤️

This comment section has become its own unofficial study of how people can hear the same words and glean completely different meanings from it. My personal interpretation is that we, each and every one of us, are born with the capacity to share the same kind of relationships with each other as anyone else, regardless of gender, social class, etc. All that changes once outside forces begin to act on us, be those forces patriarchal, matriarchal, religious, economical, or fill in the blank. I think many straight men spend too much time on being hard, straight, macho macho, to live the straight macho way. It takes alot of energy. I absolutely adore Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin...what a friendship they have and I love all their insights into female worthiness and the importance of females in the world at large...it would be amazing to be their friend.
@cathy smith she was protesting the Vietnam war like most people at the time. she was trying to make a statement that these people are human beings in a war just like America. Yes she took it too far and she made a mistake. Whether she had done it or not there would have still been the war and the deaths. She did a lot for the liberation of American women. Just because you are holding on to that one mistake, doesn't make her a traitor.
I can see why the chemistry is so good on grace and frankie. ..they know and love each other so well that they are just acting as their selves. ..2 beautiful women with beautiful souls. .we should all be so happy and well rounded
I have always loved them both. I sure hope they make a 9-5 sequel because I'll be first in line. Just watched the original the other day and it's as relevant now as it was then. These ladies are the best! Truly. #goals.
Thanks Jane for the great expression of how we all, men and women, need to be allowed to be vulnerable. Lily, yes we need to do something different.. Thank you you wonderful women!
IDK about most guys. I cry, hug, and get open and emotional with all my guy friends. This is mainly because of the stereotype that men don't have meaningful relationships that I do this, but it also makes me a better friend overall.
RiNickulous You are in a current wave of new thought about how men can/should be. A lot of hard work by men and women went into making that. I'm happy it resulted in a new world like this. The fight back from the right is the old way fighting the new way. Hang in there and keep on.
RiNickulous Men have had more heart problems and health problems because men were told to suppress emotions and unfortunately still do. It is good that you feel free to express your feeling. It’s good for your health.
i think this is great. its not sexist its an exaggerated joke to highlight a problem for men (culturally expected machisimo). how is it not good to address issues so embedded in the culture? rather than a lighthearted tone would a somber one be preferable? she even explained that our relationship need is equal @ birth, suggesting a societal issue. in addition the video is a celebration of female friends. although i do think the quality of male friendship should not be disparaged for being different.
+Namaka Lis "Feminism" is bigotry the same as racism at this point. It needs to be wiped out and exterminated with the rest of the antiquated, hateful ideas it's associated with.
+Namaka Lis Sort of like its not sexist its an exaggerated joke to highlight a problem for woman (culturally expected femininity). You know like mothers forcing their girls to play with dolls, wear makeup and high heels. ;)
+John Doe i dont think making a video celebrating their female friends supports teaching men to suppress their emotions? though they didnt really do anything that could benefit the issue either.
The sort of male friendship they describe is a sad affliction of the west. Men in the east are able to love and even touch each other lovingly, just as women do. We need to make it okay for men to show their need for and ability to love. It is the ridiculous macho culture that has taken that from them and I, like these amazing ladies, feel sad that men have to miss out on that. Think of Rumi and his Shami; has there ever been a deeper, fuller love than that? Men can have it to - it is part of what feminism offers.
It seems sort of noteworthy that while that's true, of men in the east, they also tend to be more homophobic (with a few exceptions). So it would be interesting for someone to tie that in and explain it. Is there any relationship? Does widespread homophobia make it ok for men to be close because they don't fear being seen as gay? Does the liberalization (gay friendliness, "metrosexuality") of the west make men fearful of seeming un-masculine (often associated with being gay, but unfairly)? 100 years ago men in the west seemed closer, you see them holding hands in photos (and they're presumed to not be gay), but gay people weren't even really considered on any level then, for most it would have been an impossibility for someone they know to be gay. In many ways it seems like men have progressed, but as that's happened the "toxic masculinity" aspect has intensified too.
I don’t think it’s the women’s problem “to make it okay for men to show their need for and ability to love”. Men need to take up responsibility for themselves. Women can support them. But, no one gets anywhere in life, unless they want change in themselves. Just a plain fact of life.
@@joyling5976 many women call men names like " they must be gay" when men express their feelings or get along really well. Many WOMEN accuse men of looking gay if they have close relationships and talk about their feelings to each other. How is this possible? why is this done? well, I suspect it is some kind of vicious jealousy and an attempt to keep the attention on them. Pure selfless instinct. care to comment?
That is so true, at the risk of using gender stereotypes I actually do think that women are more able to be vulnerable and disclose their deepest emotions and struggles, but only due to the irritating construction of 'masculinity' that society expects of men. I encourage every one of my male friends to do the same because it's so important that they speak about their feelings and struggles too, men need to feel they can speak about feelings too.
They're so freaking amazing, inspirational and funny. I absolutely LOVE Jane and Lily. I never anticipated devouring Grace and Frankie at the rate I did. These two and Sam blow that show out of the water for me. I have NEVER before binge watched an entire season in 1 day. They are just brilliant, talented women.
Have always loved Jane Fonda. She's strong, a trailblazer, an inspiration, and so very talented! She's always been so forthcoming & owned her revelations in life.
Great interview. I don't know if it's a regional thing (I live in Seattle), but I see a lot of those male tropes changing. Everybody hugs, which is still strange to me, and I overhear them having pretty interesting conversations about women, racism, homophobia. It's cool, I must say.
Love this interview, Jane can only be serious about her beliefs and Lily with her years of delivery can hardly speak seriously without the laughter. It is the perfect George Burns and Gracie routine!! Love you both ladies.
I love these women so very much!! Im 43 and watched Grace and Frankie all seasons 4 times!! powerful on and off stage. Thank you Jane and Lily for your inspiration.
I love their intelligence and their humor, and I love it that men are becoming increasingly open to expressing themselves. I think, too, of the great friendships I have seen between men. I have five superb women friends and I can so relate to what these three women are speaking of.
These two are wonderful in "Grace and Frankie!" The older I get, the more I relate to the experiences of the two characters. I've watched every episode twice because it makes me smile and laugh. I am excited for season 6.
I loved this! Two of my biggest role modes for so long! They speak my language and inspire me. Inspire me to focus on a persons essence rather than their persona they’ve built up. At our essence we are equal. And I love what Jane said “gender equality lifts ALL boats, not just women”
Kim Jasso There is gender equality already. Statistics now price that women have equal opportunity, are graduating at a higher rate and have equal income when taking all factors into consideration. They think it’s still 1962 and it’s simply not. How about pushing for women empowerment in the Middle East. Or do Muslim women not deserve equality?
These ladies are such an inspiration to all of us. They are beautiful, funny, intelligent , caring. They have been able to articulate in a very simple way all my thoughts and feelings. Thank you
GREAT POINTS THROUGHOUT! Not threatened but rather touched and inspired! -Cuban Male, there ya go! Loved all of this! The world needs their ideas! I had the good fortune to work with Jane a few years ago. Cherish it!
It's not threatening. These women are cool, but they're making incorrect statements. For one thing, it's a proven fact that men die earlier than woman, because they make up 90 percent of all high risk and hazardous vocations, such as: active military service, police officers, fire-fighters, construction workers, etc.
That is certainly not WHY men die earlier. First, your percentage is incorrect, it's much lower than 90%. Second, those variables (occupation, income . . .) are all factored out of the equation. Also, you fail to take into account that only women can birth babies, and many women still die of complications from pregnancy, either at birth or decades later. That's also factored out. What they focus on are diseases and natural causes. What they're saying is true.
I don't know where you're getting your information, but it certainly IS "why men die earlier." The occupations, etc., are ABSOLUTELY NOT included in the equation, and these studies have been conclusive for decades. I know it hurts the current extreme feminist's narrative, but facts are facts. Men die earlier because of the higher risk jobs/positions they overwhelmingly hold, such as: military service, police officers, fire-fighters, construction workers, etc. - and according to many studies, earlier deaths in men are due to financial stress due to 73% of American men being the primary bread-winner (*that number has been in sharp decline since 2001.) BTW - giving birth (while not a walk on the beach) is not a health hazard.

I remember Lilly from laugh-in when I was a teen, she is hilarious!Jane is a good actress and a very lovable person. I'm so happy they have such a close friendship.
I miss my tribe and desperately need one. As a single woman, never married and not able to have kids...your left out and looked down on. I miss good female friends.
Leigh Sheets i know how you feel,it must be really hard but i hope you will connect with your old friend or get a new friend :)
Leigh I wish I knew where you were. We could be friends. Travel and cut up together, movies, dinner, talk. I live in ATL metro area.
Reach out, Leigh and find new friends to talk with and do activities with. I recently had a falling out with my sister, my best friend - and I am devastated. I never did have many close girlfriends, and now - especially as I grow older! and have had to move! I find myself more and more isolated, and depressed. This video only underscored my loneliness. I intend to reach out, myself, and try to establish new and lasting friendships, and hope that somehow my relationship with my sister can be repaired. God bless.
Is there a place we can come together and pool resources like inspiring books, ideas and compassion? We can build each other up and grow together
If your old ones forgot you when they had families they weren't really good friends to start with. Selfish. I say look for new REAL good friends
I love Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda!
Watching this now in 2023, their transparency and wisdom shone through. Strong encouragement!! So thrilled Fonda and Tomlin are still going strong. Pat Mitchell did a great job of not interrupting and letting them both share.
I can't believe Jane is nearly 80... she looks amazing
Great plastic surgeon...but she does has great bone structure and would look great without it.
Lily is only about a year younger. Amazing.
If I would have the funds available to take ballet clases yoga special foods and exercises I will look the same very young looking unfortunately I had to work raised my children try to supply education home care attend to My husband busy with children activities girls scouts Indian maiden ballet classes gymnastics swimming and all the activities as a parent must participate in the children activities
I don’t have a nany to care and me take care of me
@@terrytepper3306 I'm so sorry you are so bitter.
I hope time eases that.
@@HjCrawford Jane hasn't had nearly as much plastic as a Kardashian or a Jenner and she's 80. She admits to some turkey neck touch ups and some to stay working, but she by no means has gone to the extent the latter mentioned have.
Frankie And Grace Showed Me That The Way I Feel At 71 Is Not Rare Or Weird!! We As Older Women Should Not Keep Ourselves Locked Into What Others Expect Us To Be. This Only Serves To Stifle Our Potential. Frankie And Grace Is A True Inspiration For Us All!! I Never Laughed So Hard And So Long While Watching This Utterly Hilarious, Down To Earth Series!! Jane Fonda And Lily Tomlin Are Now My Adopted Sisters, Even Though They Dont Know It. I Love Them So Very Much!! Thanks Girls, For Your Great
Effort To Show Us What Really Matters In Life!! I Couldnt Agree More!! Bless You Both!!
Team Lavender shares Jane and Lily's vision for a 3rd wave of Feminism! THANK YOU both for using your voice and leadership to help change the world for the better.
How refreshing! Their humor, their personality, their honesty, their strength, their friendship. It reminds me that beauty is there, at any age, and to do all that’s in your power to remain healthy and age healthily. It takes some luck, and a lot of work, but it’s worth giving it our best.
OMG! She was talking about renewable energy and fossil back in 2015! And she said that women were a renewable source of energy. I wonder how many book she reads in a week. I wonder if she reads more than one book at the same time.🤩🤩That lady just rocks!
"i have my friends, therefore i am" reasonated so deeply with me. i too would be nothing without my women friends :')
No wonder they have such chemistry on Grace and Frankie, they truly are very good friends in real life, I love that show.
If men were able to maintain friendships with each other as these 2 have described as women, the world would be a whole lot better place to live in.
I've seen many men keeping these kind of friendship and I am a woman.
@@marias7599 I'm a guy, and a gay one at that, and I don't see it. Maybe it's cultural.
Couldn't agree more with you ..
omg when lily whacked janes knee reflex spontaneously i love her
Lily's smile makes me smile every time. She is so cute! Ageless. What a powerful duo!
Oh, these women are so funny! and their friendships are true and obvious! Loved this one!
YES! Renewable energy! Wonderful to see them!
Hi Cynthia hope you’re okay?
These iconic women have really nailed it on women's friendships. My life wouldn't be worth living without the women in it.
Hi Suzan hope you’re okay?
I absolutely adore Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin...what a friendship they have and I love all their insights into female worthiness and the importance of females in the world at large...it would be amazing to be their friend.
Two monumental women. Cheers!

This beats any lecture, any day!
❤️🌹👍👩❤️💋👩
+Namaka Lis
Sort of like its not sexist its an exaggerated joke to highlight a problem for woman (culturally expected femininity). You know like mothers forcing their girls to play with dolls, wear makeup and high heels. ;)
+TehBrackShiip i can't speak for other's actions + idk what the feminists in your life tend to do, but it IS a problem.
+John Doe i dont think making a video celebrating their female friends supports teaching men to suppress their emotions? though they didnt really do anything that could benefit the issue either.
+TehBrackShiip then they aren't real feminists imo .
These two are hysterical together!
I love what you said I agree 100%:)
I don’t think it’s the women’s problem “to make it okay for men to show their need for and ability to love”. Men need to take up responsibility for themselves. Women can support them. But, no one gets anywhere in life, unless they want change in themselves. Just a plain fact of life.
You can always tell which groups are not in charge of society by witnessing how reluctant people are to be associated with them in any way.
It is heart-warming seeing them endearing each other so fondly.
That is so true, at the risk of using gender stereotypes I actually do think that women are more able to be vulnerable and disclose their deepest emotions and struggles, but only due to the irritating construction of 'masculinity' that society expects of men. I encourage every one of my male friends to do the same because it's so important that they speak about their feelings and struggles too, men need to feel they can speak about feelings too.
i grew up laughing, learning and being heart-warmed by Ms. Tomlin. Love her.
I love these two women, natural comedians. And beautiful and graceful!. 😘😘😘😘
More people need to watch this! Share it with your friends and family. SO MUCH KNOWLEDGE in 15minutes!
i do like these two together on their netflix show! I only hope Dolly Parton guests stars along the two actresses
These two share a wonderful chemistry in Grace and Frankie. I didn't know they were close friends.
Have always loved Jane Fonda. She's strong, a trailblazer, an inspiration, and so very talented! She's always been so forthcoming & owned her revelations in life.
Truly a wonderful interview.
Nice to see all the big strong men here to set us little girls straight about what's important.
HAHAHAHAHAHA THIS COMMENT MADE MY DAY
Klutzy68 MISOGYNISTIC PIG😡😡
🏆
Love them both. Always have. I so remember Lily on laugh-in. The telephone operator and the child in the huge chair.
Great interview. I don't know if it's a regional thing (I live in Seattle), but I see a lot of those male tropes changing. Everybody hugs, which is still strange to me, and I overhear them having pretty interesting conversations about women, racism, homophobia. It's cool, I must say.
We are born of love; Love is our mother. Persian philosopher, Rumi
Love this interview, Jane can only be serious about her beliefs and Lily with her years of delivery can hardly speak seriously without the laughter. It is the perfect George Burns and Gracie routine!! Love you both ladies.
I absolutely adore Lily Tomlin. What a mentor! What an iconic woman.
I love these women so very much!! Im 43 and watched Grace and Frankie all seasons 4 times!! powerful on and off stage. Thank you Jane and Lily for your inspiration.
oh my gosh, they're like Grace & Frankie for real
I love their intelligence and their humor, and I love it that men are becoming increasingly open to expressing themselves. I think, too, of the great friendships I have seen between men. I have five superb women friends and I can so relate to what these three women are speaking of.
Hi Susan hope you’re okay?
Damn didn't expect Jane being so informed, she's amazing! And Lily is too funny
I was lucky to meet Lily Tomlin at a park in LA while she was filming a movie. Such a nice and down to earth lady. Loved the experience ❣️
I love them. Lilly was an idol of mine growing up. She's so funny. Jane too! That show is amazing.
These two are wonderful in "Grace and Frankie!" The older I get, the more I relate to the experiences of the two characters. I've watched every episode twice because it makes me smile and laugh. I am excited for season 6.
Hi Lisa hope you’re okay?
Excellent interview. Thank you.
I loved this! Two of my biggest role modes for so long! They speak my language and inspire me. Inspire me to focus on a persons essence rather than their persona they’ve built up. At our essence we are equal. And I love what Jane said “gender equality lifts ALL boats, not just women”
My husband and I BOTH laughed and enjoyed every moment of this! Thanks for sharing it...
These are some brilliant women!
Just some people, sitting, having good time. Good for them.
Jane really gets passionate about our planet. She’s an excellent speaker..
Hi Sandra hope you’re okay?
I LOVE this show it has me laughing and always appreciating my wonderful female friends. Long live Jane and Lily and their humour and love of life x
These ladies are such an inspiration to all of us. They are beautiful, funny, intelligent , caring. They have been able to articulate in a very simple way all my thoughts and feelings. Thank you
Remarkable ladies individually, world changing as a duo
Yes Jane , Lily and Pat. Keep putting it out there. We are listening.
Wow. A lot of hurt male ego comments. Who knew that three women talking could be so threatening?
😂😂😂😂😂
These two r priceless. They r gold together n i enjoy learning from them
Jane's hair is amazing.
its a wig
@@mavennicole5936 are you sure? How about the interview's hair? It seems like it too
Sharp wigs
Thank you ladies for helping me embrace my aging. You have no idea how much I adore you. XO
I had no idea they were actually friends. Cool. :)
Do not seem that way.
Not all friendships look the same :)
Marielle Nerder True. As I looked on I could see.
they have been friends for almost 40 years

Love these two; just binged on Grace and Frankie and am now up to date for the new season that begins this week! ~
Hi Susan hope you’re okay?
I find this to be a really lovely interview, particularly as it expresses the real friendship between the three onstage.
