@@Sul_Shadw Ohh right, with you now. Yes, I have the answer for that one, it will be explained in the next part, basically they have the same VRM components but the 'Pro' design is much better.
Electrical engineer here: You plug the power cable to the wall so little electrons can travel to your cpu and work inside. AC electrons go all over the place they are kinda overqualified for PC work, but DC ones I heard they are the kind of people that don't like changes. Battery and capacitors are some kind of hotel for them, doublers are cloning device used to reduce cost, but the efficiency of this device is low. MOSFETS are factories, if you have less of them it gets kinda of crammed and hot for electrons, that's why you need heatsink to keep them cool otherwise they will protest by setting fire in factory and work is over. Currency used to pay workers is Watt. Hope this helps.

A revisit for me. In late 2022 I bought two Gigabyte Gaming X (V2) boards for a very good Black Friday price, and I run them on average 3.5 hours a week, one with a 5700X and one with a 5600X. Both are very simple systems running 32GB of 3200 CL16 or 3600 CL 18 RAM. Neither has ever presented a VRM heat issue. I don't overclock and obviously had no plans to when I decided on this motherboard.
Hey Steve! I just saw you got over 500k subs, and i remember me saying when you were at 100k that you'll get over 500k in no time. Glad it happened. Best regards and may you continue to 1mil.
Decided to preemptively purchase the MSI B550 Gaming Plus as with a promotion it effectively cost me around $190. Was nervous going into this video, but now I feel justified in my purchase. Thanks Steve!
Thanks Steve. I guess I made the right call buying the MSI B550 Gaming Plus even when there were hardly any reviews last month. I had all my parts ordered, but the B450 boards I wanted were out of stock for many online stores five weeks ago. I bought the MSI Gaming Plus because it was one of a few boards that were available within $30 of the price of B450 boards I planned to buy.
So happy to subscribe to real experts channel. Regret I haven't done it before. You do a great job. Bought Ryzen 3700X + b450 tomahawk. 2 intake fans in front, 1 intake fan in top, 1 outtake fan at the back. No overclocking. No issues so far.
Great review, MSI B550M Mortar is such a mini beast! Hoping to see Asus ROG Strix B550-F and B550-E tested soon. Seeing the poor performance from B550-A makes me skeptical about those two. Thanks for these informative videos. 🙂
Nice job, appreciate the effort. Hopefully your future review of AM5 boards will include Cinebench scores like your review of Intel B660 boards to ensure throttling isn't happening.
Many people noticed that Steve accidentally says Aorus Pro instead of Aorus Elite in the intro, but the biggest error in this video is at 14:03 when Steve adds the Part 1 boards into the graphs: the B550*M* Aorus Elite is missing! (There should be 7 purple bars, not 6.) Despite the similar names, the B550 Aorus Elite and B550*M* Aorus Elite are very different boards. In this video, the B550*M* is only mentioned once when Steve concludes it is disappointing at 15:41; don't confuse this with the B550 (no M) Aorus Elite reviewed in this video which is one of the half a dozen Part 2 boards that Steve says "delivers excellent results"!
B550M DS3H has good enough VRM for most gamers since its temperature with stock 3950X is only 96°C under heavy CPU usage which will never happen in games. Gamers should focus on other features instead. If you want WIFI, go with PRO-VDH Wifi. If you want better audio(1200 chip) , go with B550M Pro4.
I'm a month late, but I can attest to the TUF B550 being incredible. It gave me similar overclocks to my previous X570 prime and ran a bit cooler. One feature it has that other boards at it's price point does not is a Thunderbolt 3 header for an option card, so while the built in IO is lacking, this makes up for it for anyone who has devices that utilize thunderbolt like me.
@@seanbrennan5469 Yup. I was in Australia in August, and it was cold and rainy. Even ran the air conditioner for heating the hotel room, which I didn't expect to need - being from Norway and all. When the weather cleared up, we went on some nice walks.
I have the B550M Mortar and I am quite happy with it. My only one small gripe is that the CMOS reset jumper is directly below the video card. Other than that, my R3700X build is very stable. Why mATX people might ask? Because cases like the Silverstone RL08 exist. :)
It's not just about temperatures. It's also about efficiency and curve smoothness. Here it is better to have less phases at higher switching frequencies. If you have too many phases, they will simply be inactive most of the time. This is why the new B550 Tomahawk is so good with just 5 phases, which switch at 600 kHz instead of 400 kHz.
The “best” B550 is the one I have... it’s a ASUS TUF Plus ATX. I run my 3950x overclocked at 4.2 GHz. It also runs my ASUS DUEL 2080 Super OC Edition quietly...
Great video! I'm assembling a new PC in 2-3 weeks and my current parts list included the Asrock b550M Pro4. Now swapping it with MSI B550-A Pro. Dodged that bullet.... On a different note, the power delivery of B550 boards seem seriously upgraded across the board. Makes me wonder if that's not a response to Zen 3 specs provided to board manufacturers. Higher operating frequencies maybe?
Ahh it's good to know that it was a good decision to go with MSI B550-A PRO. This was my first build I was thinking of going with B450 boards but then "Future Proofing" is also a thing. Good to know thermals are not gonna be an issue. Cheers Hardware Unboxed.🍻
Hi. Awesome videos. Will you be doing a part 3 with the 170$+ B550s, and a roundup/conclusion of ALL B550s you've tested? If so, I'll be looking forward to that video. Thanks again. Your videos offer a great help. More power, and keep safe always!
I just wanted to give you guys a little of my experience on the Auros B550 Elite (not a pro like the video said, which he corrected in the pinned note above). I had some issues getting it to post initially, I thought it may have been my power supply so I swapped it out and I reseated my ram just in case. It posted, I got everything set up through bios, no problem. Didn't do anything crazy in terms of overclocking, just turned on XMP and I have a Ryzen 7 3800X so I get no real benefit from fooling with anything there with an air-cooled CPU. Well, updated my system and it needed to restart to finalize updates. Powered off and never completed the boot cycle again. It would turn on, the fan would run for a couple, then turn off. I returned the board and got an Auros X570 pro wifi. Everything else is exactly the same, fired up no problem and works great. I don't think it's a widespread issue but I did see one other reviewer on Newegg say that they had the same problem.
Woohoo for MSI B550M Mortar. I bought this B550M Mortar Wifi this summer not knowing it would be a VRM champ, I got it for its silver/white aesthetics. So coupling this board with a Ryzen 5 3600 and Cooler Master MasterLiquid 240 all-in-one, the CPU socket temp stay at a comfortable 27°C, CPU core 31°C idle
I chose the B550M Mortar WiFi for my build. At stock settings my 3900xt scores CPUMark 34433 (average of 11 tests, global average 33022 for 3900xt), with a single core score of 2934 (average of 6 tests, global average 2804 for 3900xt). All board temperatures below 50 degrees centigrade with one 120mm exhaust fan. It is memory fussy, follow the certified vendor list. Thanks for this review which helped me. Bluetooth is also included as part of the WiFi implementation on this board. The supplied 'rabbit ear' antennas are not very high quality.
Thank you for the video and If I may suggest, maybe for some next video, it will be a good idea to compare b550 with x570 that are on the same price range
14:34 why is there a B 350 MSI tomahawk in the charts? Is that supposed to be a B450 and the B450 MSI Tomahawk shown on the chart is actually the B550 model?
Wish I'd discovered this before I ended up getting a B550 Gaming X V2 alongside a 5900X... still not arrived yet but now not feeling too great about it!
It's worth mentioning that on a lot of these b550 boards the second m.2 and sata 5-6 share lanes. So if you install 2 m.2 ssd-s you typically would not get 6 sata ports, just 4, even if the boards physically have 6 ports. Which is super disappointing...
@@tomstech4390 Oh, silly me. I guess motherboard makers who put 8xsata and 2 m.2-s on x570 boards are just as stupid. Right now I have 3xsata ssd-s and a hard drive. More precisely I have another 2tb drive that isn't connected, because my motherboard only has 4 sata ports. And I plan to buy a gen3 m.2 in the future. And after that a gen4. But what if I decide to add another 2tb sata ssd?
@@danieldudas9026 1) buy nvme ssds, 2) B550 can give you x16gpu, x4 downlink and x4 nvme *plus* 4 sata drives *plus* 2 sata *plus* x8 pcie which might be broken into more m.2 slots (going throught the x4 downlink). I think 6xsata and 3xM.2 should be enough for most people, you just gotta shop more carefully. 3) get a nas or server if you want lots of storage, you should be backing your stuff up anyway dont blame the board makers or amd for your poor shopping and priorities. My system is 9.6L itx and I can fit 3x2TB(or more) SSD's in here with only a single m.2 slot.
@@tomstech4390 I was pointing this out because it doesn't matter if you have 6sata, ports if you can only use 4, if you installed 2 m.2-s. None of the boards featured here have 3 m.2-s, are you sure, you're commenting on the right video? A small itx build with lots of nvme from the get go isn't in everyone's budget, certainly not who is shopping for a 140usd board(hint - the title). Instead buying ssd-s with smaller capacity (smaller as in smaller than several tb) as they fill up with games(and also over time they get cheaper), might be what someone needs. In that case go with the board that steals the pci-e slots from the second x16 slot, not from the sata ports(if you don't need the second x16).
I was looking at ASUS/GIGABYTE for my arsenal. But, B450 has been discontinued (in my country). We are very fortunate to have a couple of VRM ‘rainman’ level channels on RUclips!
That MSI B550 A-Pro is an absolute gem for that price.
as usual extensive benchmarks and detailed explanation. good jog steve.
Finally
You guys are awesome
What a video
Thank you so much
Thanks Steve.
This is great mobo will serve you well
Well that definitely helps confirms my future purchase decision on the mortar wifi. Once again great work Steve
Great review, MSI B550M Mortar is such a mini beast!
Hoping to see Asus ROG Strix B550-F and B550-E tested soon. Seeing the poor performance from B550-A makes me skeptical about those two. Thanks for these informative videos. 🙂
Thats not an Aorus Pro. Its an Aorus Elite, just as the box says
Yeah I was thinking where is the Type c port if its an aorus pro
Righto Mr. Pedantic...
It’s ok. That’s what I’m actually looking for haha
Yeah i was so confused when he said only 4 sata ports as the pro has 6.
No shit sherlock
Nice job, appreciate the effort. Hopefully your future review of AM5 boards will include Cinebench scores like your review of Intel B660 boards to ensure throttling isn't happening.
Thx love the mobos comparison VRM reviews
outstanding work guys !, you are really doing a good job with the motherboards ! congratulations !.
You guys are the best channel for motherboard temps reviews
Massive amount of work done here. Thanks to the Harbour team!
damn i simply couldn't imagine monitor steve to be outside his monitor.
He's in your monitor 🙃

the 21c room temp
31c here lol
I think its Aussie winter
30-32 here also, air-conditioning at full speed only takes it to 26!!!😅
Lazarus The adventurer . Need better AC?
@@seanbrennan5469 Yup. I was in Australia in August, and it was cold and rainy. Even ran the air conditioner for heating the hotel room, which I didn't expect to need - being from Norway and all. When the weather cleared up, we went on some nice walks.
I have the B550M Mortar and I am quite happy with it. My only one small gripe is that the CMOS reset jumper is directly below the video card. Other than that, my R3700X build is very stable. Why mATX people might ask? Because cases like the Silverstone RL08 exist. :)
I don't get it, was he talking about the Gigabyte b550 Aorus Elite or pro ?
Thumbs up! This is what I need right now. Thanks.
I don't know what you're talking about but yes, yes I agree 😄
lol that b550 mortar is a beast
The “best” B550 is the one I have... it’s a ASUS TUF Plus ATX. I run my 3950x overclocked at 4.2 GHz. It also runs my ASUS DUEL 2080 Super OC Edition quietly...
Nope
I just picked out an MSI gaming plus for the features, glad the VRM thermals seem good!
i am planning to buy gaming plus ..is everything ok?
Great video! I'm assembling a new PC in 2-3 weeks and my current parts list included the Asrock b550M Pro4. Now swapping it with MSI B550-A Pro. Dodged that bullet....
On a different note, the power delivery of B550 boards seem seriously upgraded across the board. Makes me wonder if that's not a response to Zen 3 specs provided to board manufacturers. Higher operating frequencies maybe?
but the msi B550 A pro is not compatible with the Ryzen 4000G series right ??
Steve is a fucking hero. His work ethic is mental
Just got the MSI B550-A Pro and I’m 100% satisfied with my purchase.
Im really enjoing my b550m steel legend, just not sure why the b550m pro4 has a better heatsink for the VCore vrm, pretty silly.
Same as mine but I have a bit problem that one of the usb port had a warning "device descriptor failed" should I return this board?
The B550M Mortar was recommended for my latest pc build for Ryzen 7. Nice to see reviews that justify it.
Steve :*Talking about VRM configurations*
Me : He is speaking the language of the gods
My b450 tomahawk working perfect for me.
I'm using the B550M Aorus Elite. Currently on a tropical climate but temperatures are great. 60-65c avg. Great value! 👍
Oh no Steve is now saying Hardware Unboxed, what have you done! Harbor Unbox for life.
Thanks Steve I appreciate your hard work and looks like that mortar is best of breed .
It's so good to see an Asus micro atx board performing so well. My only wish is that the I.O shield was pre-installed like most of the other boards.
super glad I picked up the Mortar for my friends build on day 1
Thank you for the video and If I may suggest, maybe for some next video, it will be a good idea to compare b550 with x570 that are on the same price range
B550m Mortar has a massive VRM heat-sink. Massive.
14:34 why is there a B 350 MSI tomahawk in the charts? Is that supposed to be a B450 and the B450 MSI Tomahawk shown on the chart is actually the B550 model?
Great job!!! Now im happy and can choose the best one!
Great review B550 AORUS Elite was better than steel legends and u forgot to say its excellent at the end like others
Yeah I was about to comment and ask why he said it was disappointing, because it stayed among the top performers for the entire suite of tests
@@dako91196 weird probably a mistake
Free Audio probably the b550m which is a joke
Big thanks for this hard work.
Because so many people have 2x NVME drives and 6 blocks of spinning rust.
My gigabyte Z390 Gaming X burned after 2 months. My MSi lasted for 2 years no problem. Glad to see they are still going strong
I was looking at ASUS/GIGABYTE for my arsenal. But, B450 has been discontinued (in my country). So, with the money in my wallet, I paid extra for MSI B550 Gaming Plus (Trust me, I never looked at this brand), I bought it yesterday. Then, I found this review. I'm grateful for "mistakenly" choosing MSI B55 Gaming Plus
I'm confused. B550 Aorus Elite Section starts by showing the correct board, but he says Aorus Pro multiple times. Then VRM diagram is shown and, again, we see Aorus Pro, *not* Elite. Is is Aorus Elite described here or Aorus Pro?
