As someone with screws in the middle of their middle finger on the left hand that does get sore the eclutch is a fantastic idea and I hope it makes it to more bikes. I like still be able to use the clutch as normal but the hand gets sore after bit and it has been 30 years so it's not going away.
Yamaha FJR 1300 AE had electronic clutch in 2006. It's an excellent system for riding in heavy traffic. Don't know why some clueless people are jumping to the riding skills argument. Yes it will also help new riders but many of us have no issues with a full manual clutch except when commuting in traffic.
I can see this especially helpful on the track approaching the typical hairpin turn one at most tracks...being able to brake hard and hit the downshifts without worrying about blipping or botching it, especially in combination with its slipper clutch. I have an 03' 6r and have never gotten comfortable with that first hairping ughh.
Why did Troy try the e-clutch to launch in 6th gear (they ask)? Because eventually someone will inadvertently do just that! And , it’s a good test of the system. To me, the technology of e-clutch makes the most sense of semi-automated gear shifting. I’m sure there’s a lot of computer code to it, but Honda has easily accomplished it. Finally, Troy is the best video presenter/host/MC in the bike world. Always concise and to the point.
Easily? Honda certainly worked several years to accomplish that level of refinement in the smoothness of the e clutch system. What a beautiful motorcycle brand without being in the luxury side, like ducati or MV.
Excellent demonstration. Especially helpful was starting from a dead stop, stopping and slow speed maneuvering. You gave me a good understanding of the riding experience. I hope Honda brings it to the US on a bike with a more vertical riding position. I doubt that I could ride comfortably for a long ride while leaning far forward. I would like to see it available on the TransAlp.
Thanks this is the best video out there of the e-clutch system. Though i think you missed the best of this system and its driving in citys with traffic jam and all the stop and take offs. You dont need all of this clutch in/out movement. You can be more chilled. Then i wonder if the inline 4 is the best motor for this when you dont have so much grunt down low. Yes its great but maybe its even better on a twin cylinder bike? Whats your take on using the clutch without the e-system is the clutch sloppy or how does it feel comparing a normal clutch on other bikes?
I could launch in 6th too, but I'd smoke the clutch doing it. Awesome demonstration of control. Any quick shifters out there that can do that? Been riding since the '60s and don't really need any help but still I'm having trouble seeing a downside, except for it being one more thing for riders to be snobby about.
And how much does a Rekluse clutch package cost? And how much for installing it? Not everybody is knowledgeable enough to do it. I have nothing against the e-clutch, as long as it's optional on a model. I look at it as a quick shifter with an added party trick.
How does the e-clutch work on push starts? I imagine one could still manually clutch in, activate 2nd gear, then push (or roll) and throw the clutch to start like a normal e-clutch-less motorbike?
It's a manual with automated clutch. It's complicated solution of nonexistent problem. Only good thing about this is to aid a people who have some hand problems operating clutch.
Why bother developing an e-clutch if they already have DCT? I've had manual bikes all my life, but one gets to an age where the constant shifting, especially in traffic, just becomes annoying. I switched to a scooter 10 years ago, twist-and-go is heaven. I briefly added an ST1300 two years ago, based on fond memories of my Gold Wing GL1100 Interstate 30 years ago, but dropped it when I accidentally pulled away in 2nd (I hadn't shifted down to 1st) - I sold the bike within 4 weeks.
Not much different from System on the FJR 20+ years ago .Very niche product that not only adds weight but 1 drop on the right side and you're out big $$
eClutch is a 4lb addon that can be mated to almost any traditional Honda transmission, the DCT is a specialized product that's heavier and more mechanically complex. Considering how applicable the eClutch is to other models, seems like it's a pretty great piece of kit for Honda.
The screeching from Fudds and purists on this makes me laugh. This technology will be a game changer and get more people on two wheels, which is always a good thing.
Laaame. Fixing a problem that never existed. Get on the bike and learn how to ride and use the clutch. Don’t be afraid of stalling. Taking the skill out of becoming a rider. If you ride a motorcycle you should know how to use the clutch!
Launching from 6th is stupid and not helpful. You should have tried launches from 2nd. That would be helpful to avoid the 1st to 2nd shift. Also, would be helpful in traffic. What was the point of starting from 6th? Daaah...
Some very negative comments so far. I reckon it's a great idea for new riders who might struggle with a clutch, one less thing to worry about and then they can start to learn how to use the clutch once they gain confidence. If it can get more people on to bikes that can only be seen as a positive thing in my opinion.
It is just another way to up the price with a technology nobody needs. Do you know what people really need? Afortable motorcycles. In 5 years time people will have trouble buying simple and reliable motorcycles and will look for mid 2010 and early 2020 used models not because they would like to buy used, but because it will be their only choice.
If ever there was an answer looking for a problem. This is it! If you can't operate the clutch & gears without stalling. You shouldn't be on a motorcycle!
As in older rider, I’ve been motorcycling for 40 years with various manufacturers super sport bikes. Is there a problem with a clutch and manual shift lever? Is no clutch and auto shift up and down a real thing? Is it for the children that can’t grasp the thought of a manual clutch and shifter? I know most cars built today are automatic, therefore, the majority of people can’t drive a manual. My ex wife couldn’t drive my muscle cars and the like, it made me happy!!! 🙂
Yeah its more accessible its like whats wrong with non syncromesh transmission in cars or truck arent kids can't feel the rpms in their machine😂😂 lol Dont gatekeep things just because you dont wanted to get used to it the e clutch also increase the driveability in cities making the motorcycling experience more enjoyable
@@kruzininla lol you're reasoning what's wrong with lever and clutch system is the exact reasons people shame on younger people who can't use non synchro transmission in the old days E clutch makes motorcycling accessible and more comfortable especially in cities or highly populated area you just dont get it old man
@@jasonlemuel5078 just get a scooter with a CVT, sounds like that would suit your needs best. I've had both scooters and motorcycles, if you're that much stop and go traffic I don't even see the fun in being on a motorcycle. For the rest of us a large portion of the excitement of driving is in the interaction with the machine. Continuing to nerf the machine just removes some of the best aspects of the experience.
Maybe could’ve emphasized its advantages in city commuting… With lights and stop signs on almost every corner.
Very cool that they decided to leave manual operation intact. They clearly understand riding a motorcycle.

This technology is a tremendous benefit for people with hand strength issues. Say, older riders for instance.
Or anyone who just doesn't want to deal with it. You don't need to justify a disability or some other condition to use new tech or make riding easier.
Great for commuting! I tend to get a cramp in my hand after an hour in stop and go traffic. This is an ideal solution.
You were at Two Wheels of Suches in Georgia - a fantastic meeting place for riders!

would love to try it pretty neat that you can stay in first gear at a stoplight whithout have to pull the clutch in
This is much better as DCT takes away the traditional feeling of riding which is a terrible Honda investment. This is best. Good Job.
Honda sales of the DCT disagree with your statement.
@@SimonRiley752 They took something that was less than what could have been. That's the point.

How does the e-Clutch behave in 1st gear stop-and-go clutch-slipping traffic?
Like u use clutch)
Honda e-clutch seems to work just like a REKLUSE clutch.
Just weighting 6 times more and occupying 10 times the space.
Or am I wrong?
And how much does a Rekluse clutch package cost? And how much for installing it? Not everybody is knowledgeable enough to do it. I have nothing against the e-clutch, as long as it's optional on a model. I look at it as a quick shifter with an added party trick.
so its like quickshifter and auto blip.. ? e clutch is just for the 1st gear to neutral then.. am I right?
Cool tech that seems to be adaptable to multiple platforms.

I imagine one could still manually clutch in, activate 2nd gear, then push (or roll) and throw the clutch to start like a normal e-clutch-less motorbike?
With the clutch constantly engaging to anticipate up and down shifts, I bet the clutch discs wear out fast.
Perfect clutch option!
The hand clutch is vulnerable to grinding out the gear box
Nice for new riders i suppose... But as a clutcher for so long, to each there own.
This would work really well in a car

how does this transmission compare to the dct? it looks pretty good.
pretty cool

Weight, DCT weighs 35 pounds.
Besides weight, it's probably cheaper to manufacturer and they can add it to existing models with minimal additional development.
Appeals more to purists, that can seamlessly transition between the classic riding experience and e-shifting
Will these models come to the US?
So it up shifts but doesn’t down shift?

The E-clutch is just confusing for the new riders and unnecessary for the experienced ones
basically glorified super cub
4 pounds outward one side of the motorcycle. Bulky system.
Makes the bike 2 wide. I don't like it.
Never seen how it goes in the stoplight drags by anyone. My guess it’s shit in auto mode
It’s actually quite fast, I can get a jump on my buddy with an R6 and then immediately lose beyond 40mph 😂
When you're good enough you don't use the clutch to shift on a sports bike. And I don't need Honda's E-Clutch to do it either.
