    The cover of Kilroy scared me as a kid and held off buying the album for 12 years until I watched Caught In the Act (I had the live album when released in 1984 and loved it) and then I understood the Kilroy concept and the roboto masks were just masks and not real monsters. Then 1983 saw Supertramp and Pink Floyd implode as well plus no one could stop The Police and Def Leppard.

    1983 Savannah, GA I saw Styx start the show with that 14 min video and kick off the show with Mr. Roboto. I don't think the die-hard fans were ready for a theatrical performance, most of all Tommy Shaw and James Young. The beginning of the end on full display.

    • @nealm6764
      @nealm6764 3 года назад +1

      The people in the row in front of us fell asleep during the movie, which set the tone for the entire concert. People were leaving halfway through, the energy in the arena was completely drained.
      We came for the Grand Illusion, and got dancing, singing robots and ministers.
      I felt Cornerstone was the beginning of the end and Kilroy was THE END.
      They had a great 4 album run though with Equinox, Crystal Ball, The Grand Illusion, and Pieces of Eight!

    As much as I loved and still enjoy Mr. Roboto, I can’t help but think that song thrust our whole world right smack into the future...whether we wanted it or not. We went on the highway when 1982 began after the whole post-70s hangover that was 1981 faded away, but once 1983 arrived we went from the highway full throttle into hyperspace.

    Like the album or not it was successful. Roboto was on the radio every minute. I never understood how band members could get so upset about making an album that people loved and bought. That album extended their popularity and relevance. They put out Paradise theatre in 1981. Roboto comes out in 1983. No Roboto and their hay day ends in 1981. Some band members seem to think that their big record success ended because of the Roboto album. When something ends, it does not mean the last thing you did was what ended it. If paradise theatre had been their last big album would that have made paradise theatre the reason it ended?
    Then these band members say they lost their audience. Well, they generated a bigger audience with roboto. Fans that didn’t like Robot didn’t quit on the group. They actually kept the group alive through the 90’s and 2000’s.
    I also think all this hate talk on the Roboto album is not really true. Half the so called fans who say they hate that album as of late, loved it back then. When your favorite band(s) fall off their perch at the top, you always want to know why. So when band members start saying it was all Roboto’s fault, these fans just repeat what they say and then the album you liked then and in many cases, what got you hooked on them, all of the sudden sucked. I mean how can you say you like an album that the people who made it says it sucks?
    Lastly, I wished there was a way to find out how many Styx fans got started on Roboto, and it led to their discovery of their previous music

      @wildbilltexas 7 лет назад +2

      I agree, I have the "Caught in the Act" DVD and it was a bad idea to have them act it out on stage. And the tone of the album should have been more serious. The songs tried to be "infotainment" when they should have been a lot more serious criticizing backmasking, TV preachers, the moral majority and companies moving factories overseas. But I bet they felt it would be career suicide to do that so they kept the tone light, so most fans didn't take it seriously.

    • @luisalonsoecheverria
      @luisalonsoecheverria 6 лет назад +2

      I think I mostly didn't work cause Tommy and JY had trouble trying to write songs that fit with the theme and many of them were kinda half-assed or didn't fit the concept at all, with the exception of "Cold War", "Heavy Metal Poisoning", and "High Time". In one of the early drafts, "Don't Let It End" was supposed to be Kilroy singing to his estranged wife. She was written out of the story but the song stayed and that's why it doesn't make any sense in context.

    I'd like to hear far more stories about guys in bands deciding how a song is going to be structured and recorded than one whole big narrative about the songwriting process behind that song. Especially in bands that were self-produced and argued about that shit all the time during a recording session. DeYoung literally didn't say a word about it. Certain licks of a specific song bring back specific memories from that specific time. There's no "Behind The Vinyl" going on here. *BOO!!!!!!!*

I also enjoyed the theatrics of music in the 70's, and as a musician myself it is an exciting way to make a point and storyline for your music. Tommy and James didn't like it, but it was an incredible show, I saw it performed live the second show, and it was unbelievable and three hours long. It was a direction for STYX I feel ended much too soon and that was a shame. In a band you can not always have your way, hence the reason so many good bands have failed. I won't take sides because I love them all as musicians, however as much as Tommy gave the band, he also took from what De Young started and gave himself. I will just say it was a shame that they could not see eye to eye and broaden the world of Rock Musicals that pretty much died after this great album and concept.

      dakotaescher1 actually the riff with the band was they were together for a long time Dennis after caught in the act was trying to get into writing music for Broadway musicals which was his passion the killroy was here album had nothing to do with it plus in 96 John panozzo died which really hurt the band but also in 96-97 Dennis finally went after the grand reopening of Paradise theater album was when he left for Broadway and wrote music for the play hunchback of Notre Dame then he came back to form a new band with his name and the music of Styx but before that he and tommy shaw went to court over some of the music of Styx's that Dennis wrote that is when the fallout happened and Dennis completely distanced himself from Styx all together

      You don’t know if they were even going to survive the 80’s. So many bands failed or ran out of steam during the 80’s and the ones that didn’t fail were the ones that turned to ballads. Look at Chicago, Heart, Foreigner, etc.

      Tyler Buckley - You have the story ALL WRONG. Tommy, Dennis, JY and Chuck (with Todd Sucherman on drums) were back in action and after touring in 1996 with Return To Paradise and again in 1997 with the 20th anniversary of The Grand Illusion, put out an album called Brave New World.
      When they all sat down to discuss the tour and promotion for Brave New World in 1999, Dennis came down with his apparent “illness” of “light fatigue”. Whether he was lying or not is not the issue. The issue is that he asked Tommy and JY to wait a little bit until he got better. Tommy and JY said “fuck you!” and went on to keep Styx going without Dennis. THEN Dennis tried to sue them for the use of the same Styx. Dennis lost. THEN Dennis started touring as Dennis DeYoung and the Music of Styx around 2002/03.
      I met him at the casino here in CT on his first tour in 2002 and it was actually BEFORE he had the band that he has now where he’s got the 2 guys to sing the JY and Tommy songs, so what I saw was all Dennis songs.

      The fallout didn't happen when he went to court with the band (which btw was over the rights to the bandname, not the catalog). Dennis didn't leave the band to do Broadway. He was working on the Hunchback musical in between tours and eventually got sick in '99 with symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome. Styx had just recorded a new album and was set to promote and go back on tour, but Dennis wanted the band to put it off until he got better, which was indefinite. That was the final straw that broke the camel's back. Tommy and JY got sick and tired of compromising and it always being what Dennis wanted, even going as far as getting Dennis a temporary replacement while still having him travel on tour, but Dennis didn't want the band going on without him at all, and that's precisely what the band did. These days, Tommy and JY have made their peace with Dennis but no longer desire to work with him. I'm pretty sure Chuck still talks to Dennis every now and then though.

    Funny how this song broke up the band, was never considered a contender as a single etc... And then blew up huge in the early 80s and is a permanent fixture of our culture. I was a little kid when Mr Roboto was released and it's what introduced me to Styx. Because of Roboto I got their other albums and one of the things I loved about them as a kid was how their sound was in so many different directions. Ultimately the band themselves didn't like that. That's a shame. Everything from Renegade to Roboto was great. They should have accepted that they could be all of those things. In fact, just to mess with people and expectations, the follow up album after Kilroy should have been something else entirely different.

    Saw this tour in austin Texas. They had a movie on for about 15-20 minutes explaining the whole concept. I knew eventually they’d play some music. The concert started with this song. They had an elaborate curtain around the stage that refused to open. He got about 45 seconds into the song and said “can someone please open the curtain so we can start the show”? A spinal tap moment. The house lights came on. 30 minute intermission to fix the curtain. They played the movie again. By this time people are pissed and booing. They finally got into some music but the theatrics was a bad move.

    LOL. Must. Deflect. To. A. Different. Song. Easier than explaining the idea/inspiration for this or how it ever made it to a Styx LP. "She blowed up....she blowed up REAL GOOD!". OTOH, I suspect the "song" has made him/them a ton of money so bruh got paid.
