10 Defunct Alton Towers Attractions - Attraction Graveyard

- In this Attraction Graveyard episode, we discuss 10 defunct Alton Towers attractions. This historic park has had many attractions come and go through the years. Many were replaced for one reason or another. Rides like the Flume, Corkscrew, Black Hole, The Beast and Twirling Toadstool all enjoyed long tenures at the park but were removed due to deterioration. While Thunder Looper didn't comply with height requirements for the park. Submission and Ripsaw were two flat rides that had both gotten older and less comfortable as time went on.
Nemesis Sub Terra was a strange removal due to high operating costs and only stayed open for 3 years. Three rides occupied one building throughout the years, all of which are gone now. They are Around the World in 80 Days, Toyland Tours, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory the Ride. The Alton Towers Dungeon now occupies this space. While the park's development has been great overall, we thought it would be nice to stop and look back at old old defunct attractions in Alton Towers Resort that made this park what it is today.

Which one of these defunct Alton Towers attractions do you miss most? 💀
Definitely Corkscrew - it was pure fun, and as a smol thrillseeker, I appreciated a rollercoaster with a lower height limit. That said, in the years before it closed, I remember my head being bounced around like a pinball, so I understand why it had to go.
Yeah it's sad that it had deteriorated and become uncomfortable. Maybe someday they will build a replica!
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory defo
Us too! 🍫
@@ThemeSeekers Maybe for Alton Towers 50th anniversary?
Great to see that Nemesis: Sub-Terra has made its way out of the graveyard at this point!
Absolutely! 😀
Thunder looper is still missed by me. It was such a fun ride. Loved the black hole. Ripsaw was so bad with the water jets, it was a good laugh though. I had forgotten about the beast! Love Alton towers. Went every year as a child and now I enjoy taking my kids too ❤
That nemesis sub terra was the weirdest thing I've ever experienced
Yep it’s the thunder looper I miss most . Back then it was a really thrilling coaster 😍😍🧱👍🏼
When he said the flume lasted 6 mins I thought that was its whole lifetime for a second
Lol
Of all the rides on this list, Black Hole is the one I miss the most 😢
Just went on Subterra this weekend. Glad to see it has resurfaced!
Yes I remember queueing 6 hours for the corkscrew in 1980
Will watch this later..cheers for doing it
Thanks for watching Tim!
I love log flumes and it’s a shame it had to close.
Here's to hoping they open another one in the future! 🚿
R.I.P to that giant killer rubber duck 😂😂
I’m 53 now.. so for me corkscrew is my memory growing up
Glad to have ridden all of these. Sub Terra is back open now
Great video, great memories. Last rode Thunder Looper in 1992 and lastly in 1995. Last rode Corkscrew in 2005 along with Black Hole. Going to Alton Towers this weekend for the first time since 2005 (I think, anyway! Have been doing the parks in the States since, and lastly in the UK with Thorpe Park in 2015).
Amazing! It's a very different park now compared to 2005 but you will have a blast 😀 Enjoy your trip!
@@ThemeSeekers yes, I can imagine. I’m struggling to remember if I’ve been there since 2005? I rode Air, Ripsaw, Nemesis, Rita, Corkscrew, et al, my last trips were Nov 1992, July 1995, April 2000, June 2005. Now this weekend! Bring it aaaaawn! Start with WickerMan?
Wickerman is a great one to go on first, if it's open! It's been shut the past few days. Another new one for you would be Thirteen which we like a lot.
Love ripsaw
awsum video and great use of my black hole lights on pov... the number of times i see that crop up is crazy coz of the fact that there were so few of them!
certainly a few rides missing though like astrodancer/dinodancer/dynamo, enegizer/boneshaker, beastie, the cine360 dome cinemas (2 of them), tri star, the swans, 4 man bob, alton mouse, the many many many shows that were in the theatre (that would make for a video in itself, all the shows and the parade)
Thanks! Yeah maybe we'll have to make another video 😄
just a video of rethemes and moves could be interesting... like you covered with the log flume changing to the flume, there have been many rethemes of rides of the years
You k what I like you chessington and alton vids you just earned yourself another subscriber
Thanks for watching Bobby 😀 glad you like our content!
@@ThemeSeekers one day I want to be like what you doing I just need few more months and I will get everything I need
The thunder looper used to scare me. Surprised it was only there for 6 years!
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: The Ride, closed due to the licence for Roald Dhal IP expiring and AT failing to renew the licence in relation to the impacts from the Smiler incident in 2015.
One of the best channels on RUclips I've seen wow amazing thanks for the vids
Thanks for watching Mic! 😀
Black hole, or as I like to call it 'The Beast but in the dark'
The beast wouldn't fit in the black hole tent😂 As the black hole was a jetstar 2 and the beast was a larger jetstar 3 which had a higher spiral lift and, 3 drops, instead of the 2 that the black hole had.😊
I think the Toyland Tours ride was revamped into Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is because of the Tim Burton Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie from 2005, which turned out to be a success. Therefore the following year, Toyland Tours got refurbished and was turned into Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
That makes sense! Although it's strange that they went for the style of the book rather than the style of the new movie.
@@ThemeSeekers That’s probably because of copyright infringement
Maybe so! Perhaps licencing was out of budget 😀
@@ThemeSeekers The 2005 movie follows with the book too, as opposed to the Gene Wilder Willy Wonka from 1971.
Corkscrew didn't feature any loops, just two corkscrews, drops and helixes by the way.
They was a river boat like a wakcky fun house mid 80s on the side of the lake
Nemesis Sub-terra is open now
This video made me sad :( last time I visited Alton towers was in 2007 so many rides shut down
It's still great today, you should make another visit! 😀
I rode the flume when I was 10 I rode ripsaw when I was 10 I rode Charlie and the chocolate factory when I was 9 I rode twirling toadstool when I was 10 and I recently rode nemesis sun terra and it was really good
When i was younger i never sent on the flume and Charlie and the chocolate factory ride. Wish I did now just to say I'd been on them but hey can't change the past. I honeslty always thought charlie and the factory would have been another 4D movie like ice age was
If you've done the Alton Towers Dungeon, some of the Charlie amd the Chocolate Factory ride is still used on that!
can you do a defunct PortAventura Attractions please?
Hey that's a great idea! Watch this space 🤩
@@ThemeSeekers here are some ideas: el tifon, sea odyssey, trono de pacal, fumanchu..
Ripsaw was brutal
What happened to ‘the mouse’ roller coaster? I remember banging my ankles on it as it had sharp turning points..👍
Tip for future videos: turn the music down a little. It makes it hard to hear your voice sometimes.
I don’t understand all these restrictions due to neighbour complaints. They live near a theme park, what do they expect? What is the issue with the rides being higher than the trees? I’m so confused by it.
The villages and the houses in them were there a long time before the theme park opened.
@@southofthemersey7351 Same folk complaining will be the ones benefiting from the footfall.
@@Jasontvnd9 Footfall for what? The house you live in?
@@southofthemersey7351 how many of the local businesses benefit from a large footfall theme park next door?
local businesses tend to employ locally.
Thunder looper should never have gone !
Limited planning permission due to noise levels generated for local residents
Is that why they had to remove it because of the noise of people screaming?
Now Nemesis Sub-Terra has returned and is not defunct anymore.
True! Now only 9 more to go 😂
@@ThemeSeekers 😆😆😆😆😆
Submission aka castration the ride
I thought Corkscrew would be NUMBER 1
They are in no particular order. He says that right at the start of the video.
X area of Alton towers has always been dodgy where rides break down and where accidents happens
Needs a new corkscrew ride ......
There was only 1 accident...
@@smilerfanatic8889 the black hole ride was dangerous tho I hurt my neck on it in old days
@@quinnpaddock4241 doesn't make it dangerous
Sub terror actors also got put on their asses a few times by startled guests
I remember a story ages ago where someone started trying to fight a guy dressed as Sonic the Hedgehog for the Spinball ride 😂
U who un
You get a thumbs down for no flashing lights warning.
Epilepsy can kill people so PUT A WARNING ON NEXT TIME!!
Nemesis sub terra was awful completely boring.
I wonder what happened to the Black Hole tent...
The only thing you failed to mention was that the black hole track was the same as the beast.
