I always enjoyed Big Game Brent when he WASN'T calling games. Then you put him behind a mic and he turned into something else all together.

MNF highlights? No Denver Broncos "ever" and people loved to boo the TV in bars across the city. One even had a drawing and after the highlights were over and once again the Broncos (who were quite terrible back then) were dissed for the umpteenth time, the lucky winner was given a shotgun and allowed to shoot the TV screen.
Ah, the good old days . . .

Howard Cosell, interviewing Sammy Davis Jr. ringside at a Las Vegas fight in the 1970's: "Well, Sammy, how do you see this fight?", asked Howard. "With my one good eye," replied Davis. Cosell, as I recall, was stunned and momentarily speechless .

A great meme is one of Cosell standing next to Bruce Jenner and OJ Simpson, mike in hand. The caption is "Ladies and gentlemen, I have just returned from the future and you're NOT gonna believe this s**t!"

57 here and can remember those days. In fact the theme music from wide world of sports can still get stuck in my head every once in awhile. I think the main difference is back then you had to have character to do the job. Now days all you need to do is be a character.

My buddies dad made the front page of the Cleveland Plaindealer. He had on a Donkey Costume on with a Howard Cosell name tag & jackass written on it at a Monday night game in the Seventies.

Howard would do a lot of MNF drunk. One night he even puked in the booth. And spent an hour praying to the porcelain god. While you can hear Meredith say. where's Howard? Come back Howard.

I knew Brent growing up. I would play with his son who had a congenital heart problem and one leg about 3 inches shorter than the other, but we were bound by our love for baseball. We and the boy next door would play whiffle ball in their front yard and Brent would pitch. But I was introduced to Brent in a strange way. His son, who I believe was named Brett, it's been 45 years, said "my dad is on TV". I said "no way". He said "yeah, my dad is on TV, I'll show you". So he turned on CBS and we waited a few minutes. Long enough for me to give him grief that he was making this up. Then Brent came on, a face everyone knew, and I recognized him right away and he said "THAT'S MY DAD!". I was impressed for about 30 seconds and we went out and played. Years later I was working at a local restaurant in Westport as a Busboy and some of the staff were whispering, "Brent Musberger is here" and it was causing a stir. I immediately left my station to say hi and many were telling me to stop. He greeted me warmly, remembering my name. I asked how Brett was and he sadly said that Brett "didn't make it, he passed away recently". I said how sorry I was and we parted. I always thought him a good man who was treated poorly by either the politically correct class or the cancel culture crowd.

At one point a poll showed Cosell was the most popular sports commentator in the country with twenty percent of the vote - and simultaneously the most HATED with forty percent! I originally hated him but eventually grew the really enjoy his schtick, until, as Musberger points out, he got too full of himself at the end.
He was so popular he did four episodes of a variety show called - wait for it - Saturday Night Live with Howard Cosell in 1975. While doing a skit where he’s eating breakfast with his family he asks someone to “Pass The Juice!”
And let us never, ever forget the epic entertainment that was Battle of the Network Stars!
Man, that was a different time…

Howard was an entertainer. I don’t think he cared if you loved him or hated him - just that you watched. Like most kids back then, I had my Cosell imitation, “THIS is Howard Cosell!” I grew to love him. Anything he covered was instantly elevated to an event. He could have covered a bar mitzvah and made people think they were watching something of national importance.

Absolutely correct - the thing I remember most from the 1970s and early 1980s MNF games were Cosell’s halftime highlights.

I remember Monday Night Football with Howard, “Dandy” Don Meredith, and Frank Gifford. It was the best football broadcasting combination ever. I wish all football fans could have experienced them in their live MNF broadcasts.

I can't tell you how much joy, as a kid, I felt when that CBS NFL Today music played and Brent's voice came on Sunday. We only had 4 channels and Sunday mornings were full of creepy TV evangelists, farm reports, boring news, and then BOOM "You are looking live..." Still exciting to think about.

People forget that Howard Cosell's career as a major broadcaster was relatively short. He became connected with Muhammad Ali after he won the title and assumed a Muslim name. His last major assignment was the 1984 Summer Olympics where he covered boxing. That's only about 20 years.
