I miss those days. I was in elementary school through the 70s and Tuesday mornings were full of all us fellas talking about the game and imitating Cosells analysis. He was iconic and I knew deep down in his last years there would not be another like him when he would eventually leave. Same with Summeral.
I miss hearing both of them as well especially Summerall. I caught the tail end of Cosell's career and I know his voice well. But I had the pleasure of listening to Pat Summerall for 20 plus years along with John Madden who I remember when first teaming up with Pat. Unfortunately they don't make them at all like they use to. Even Keith Jackson's voice was super iconic with Whooooooa Nelly !!! But I was too young to remember him on Monday Night football. I'll always remember him calling it from the booth for collegiate games Those 3 right there we'll never see the likes of ever again
This was when MNF was fun. It didn't even matter who was playing, it was an event in itself because of the people who were selected and paired off in the announcer's booth. There are hundreds of stories like this. Putting Cosell with the others who were almost the opposite of Howard was an act of genius.
There’ll never be anything close to MNF like it was through the 70s w/ Howard, Frank Gifford and Dandy Don Meredith. Don poked fun and @ Howard until he would get visibly angry until Frank would bring sanity back and it started over again. It was entertaining, especially if the game stunk. Then they brought in OJ and the bad games were even worse.
This is news to me. We didn't get cable tv(I'm up here in Canada) at our place until 1974,when I was but 12. Monday Night Football was something I really hadn't seen before(much bigger CFL fan). When I got used to Cosell he came to sound like a rarely changing drone who sometimes would say zany and puzzling things----at least to me and my two younger brothers. I'm not sure we would have realized he was broadcasting this game intoxicated. Meredith was a class act in covering for his falling apart colleague. I do remember the Namath ''interview.'' Hilarious. His true self emerged.
What happened was that Leonard Tose, who was the owner of the Philadelphia Eagles, treated the trio to vodka Martinis and Couvasier Cognac in the booth. Howard Cosell, who was not feeling well, did the game and threw up on Don Meredith's cowboy boots. He was MIA for the second half of the game. After the game ended, he took a taxi from Philadelphia to New York City, traveling through New Jersey Turnpike and the Garden State Expressway in which he fell asleep during the ride home.

That’s the year they agreed to a peace treaty and decided to have the two league champions face each other in a championship game, which was subsequently called the Super Bowl. It was also the year they agreed to a common draft, eliminating the warfare over signing players.
The Cosell line that got him fired, "He's on the 30, the 40, the 50, look at that monkey run, he's on the 40, the 30....." in reference to Walter Peyton's breaking run in Chicago. Cosell was fired at half time in that game.

The comment was made about Alvin Garrett of the Washington Redskins, and Cosell was not fired at halftime or any time for the comment, though he did face a crap load of backlash for it. That's not a big problem now, even the bad teams sell out regularly. I don't remember the "bug flew into his ear and vertigo" thing but I'm sure you're right, lol. MNF was definitely a lot of fun to watch back then. It was great when Cosell got mad or got other people mad. He loved using his big vocabulary and sneaky, snide remarks, lol. He was an American icon though.
My dad drank at the refinery because things blew up all the time and he had to wade through neck high gasoline to shut off valves. They found his bottle and let him stay.
I'm not trying to excuse Joe Namath's behavior, but Suzy Kolber or someone on her crew had to have known he was in no shape to be on live national TV but they let him do it anyway.
