- This is Part 1 of the 就 (jiu) series. In this video, we are going to look at a simpler framework to understand 就 (jiu) as an adverb in most occasions. The video will introduce about 11 patterns in which we use 就 as the adverb. More variations will be explored in future videos.

Sorry about the typo at 4:19, I meant to say "whichever" not "wichever". It's unfortunate that youtube won't let me change it after posting it.
No worries! You are a great teacher and your intention is much bigger than this little mistake... I hope to see the next video soon
Didn't even notice

Genial. One of the trickiest grammar concepts made clear in 5 min.
This is such a great way of explaining a grammatical concept, that I was having so much trouble understanding. Your visual approach and clear explanations are so refreshing. Thanks. I’m now a subscriber, and I’m looking forward to seeing more of your videos.
I just discovered twin cities. I just went through 2 videos, and they are excellent. Cudos to twin cities. I used to TRY to work on my mandarin with youtube, but the Mandarin videos have greatly improved, and these are some of the best I've seen. Hello to Twin cities, from a Univ. of Wisconsin - madison Graduate! I intend to go through the whole array of videos.
So glad you like them! Enjoy.
Fantastic explanation!

@@ChineseGrammarSimplified No worries. Your videos are excellent regardless of small errors here and there. Your English is better than my Mandarin. Not like I'm paying for the content. I appreciate the time you put into this channel.
You are amazing. This was my first exposure to this concept. I have a lot to learn.

Woww...哇谢谢你 waiting for the other videos 😭😭😭 like I'm now in HSK5 level and I still haven't mastered the whole meanings of this 就
Wow! That was helpful! Will definitely check out your other vids about 就
Thanks for the video. I really helped me in my Mandarin lesson!
Your explantion using the arrow is just amazing. It helped me a lot. Do you have something bout 了 le, I think is as difficult as this grammar point and your video could help a lot.
Omg! best explanation I've heard! Where have u been all my life? I did my master in teaching Chinese as a foreign language, passed HSK 6 but still haven't figured out some of the particularities in chinese, such as "了". Ultimately I have came to terms that I'll never completely understand it, but I'm sure that with your help I'll finally get it. ❤️🙏🏻

谢谢 thank you for the great video, please keep up the great work :)
Smart teacher.
Thanks for the very informative videos! They really help me a lot in understanding Chinese grammar. Perhaps you could also make a video explaining the use of 才? I have a hard time understanding this character.
Just did this year!
Thank you.
Great!!!
我觉得你的课是很好👍就连续
我觉得你的课‘’程‘’很好👍‘’請继续”
In the example:
他想买哪个电脑就买哪个电脑
we could almost say that "two questions make an answer".
Because the question-word 哪 appears both before and after 就. Yet the sentence is a statement, not a question.
I first saw this structure in the sentence:
谁有钱我就卖给谁 ("I will sell to whoever has money")
It took me a long time to figure out the meaning.
Partly because 谁 is the subject in the first clause, yet it is the object in the second clause.
Also, "whoever" is normally rendered as 谁也. But 也 is not used in this structure.
Thank you for your comment, you are totally right! I just saw your comment and would like to also introduce anyone who is curious to watch my more recent video about this exact topic:

Very helpful!
Thank you!
Geez….. my brain is smoking. I will review this with the goal of learning this. Thank you for your hard work.
Could you please explain the differences between 了,过,and 着。there's also some other confusing things too like the usage or 一下 or reduplication, when a verb is repeated twice with 一 in middle. Eg; 笑一笑。
when u have a verb repeated with a 一, it implies that the action is small. for example a little smile or chuckle. mostly it's just a feeling (which is why it's hard to grasp) but think of it as a way to really emphasize what you are saying rather than it having a specific meaning.
as for ”过“ this is a verb right? but it can also be used for when a situation passes. you might know about this, but don't use this word for people (like 我过了 as a way to say you passed) unless you add on a location like you passing over a BRIDGE.
as for ”了“, this is just a particle word (idk if this is the correct term) but you will commonly see it added to the end of a sentence, signifying that whatever the sentence is has happened in the past. If the sentence is long, you will have to add it at the end of a verb such as "吃了”, but it doesn't always have to follow a verb.
in the situation that the word isn't following a verb, it has to be a compact sentence, so you can write your action (verb) the LOCATION and the word "了". there are exceptions, but this is what you will commonly see. ex: 我到(verb-to arrive)了餐馆(restaurant). the same sentence except with the particle at the very end of the sentence 我到餐馆了. both are fine, it's just that the first one might seem awkward in certain situations.
and the same word has a double meaning and pronunciation in which "le" turns into "liao". you will commonly see this with "了解” (liao jie) which means to understand. again, this might be something you already know, but I hope this clears some things
Sorry for the late reply (3 years later). But if you are still confused about these issues. Please watch the following three of my videos:

哇,太感谢了🙏,这部视频为我非常好用的,您可不可以教我们“才”的语法?
Damn I’d struggled with jiu but had no idea it was such a common pain point until I was suggested this video!
Since 是。。。的 is also used for emphasis. Is 那个是Taylor的 the same meaning as 就?
No, I am actually planning to make a video about this. There are actually three layers of information involved here.
1. 是……的 is only used for emphasizing "How" "when" "where" "why" "with whom" a past event happed. ex. "Taylor 是昨天买那个电脑的"。Notice here, 是 is not the verb, the verb is 买。 If you take the 是……的 away, the sentence should still make sense. That is a simple way to determine if the sentence is actually using 是……的 pattern for emphasis.
2. Therefore, the sentence you gave is not really one with the "是……的" pattern, because 是 in your sentence was used as a verb. Your sentence is really a "Subj 是 + description 的 + Obj" sentence, but the object is omitted.
3. Notice in the first point, 是……的 is used in a very precise occasion for some specific emphasis. And it's location is different in the sentence from 就 (the arrow 就 goes before Verb)。So it is therefore different from 就.
你很厉害!🫡
11 first ways of using this damn word. I wish I could give you 11 likes, 兄弟
I only want to learn Traditional Chinese Characters so I can read some basic Chinese. What do you recommend? Right now I’m studying from an App, a few books, and you! The App isn’t exactly what I want. I think the way I would learn best is by the radicals. All words that have one radical then move on to the next radical. Or learn all characters together that have the context. My book kind of does this, but it doesn’t explain the measure words. I would be grateful for any help. I was looking for a contribute area on your bar, but couldn’t find one.
If we are just talking about population using the language, there are way more people using simplified characters than traditional ones.
就
Is it ok to use the sentence without Jim when we have an adverb ???
jim?
This reminds me of a famous sentence: 不!我就是你的父親!
That is a great one! I should have used it! I might work it into my later videos. Thanks!
Darth Vader? 😮
This is off topic, but isn't 台 supposed to be the measure word for electronics/machines like computers? Or does 个 work just as well?
Both works.
博主是母语者吗?总结得还挺到位噢
是的🙂↕️
就 and 然后 how deferent?
Av Nkig they essentially mean the same thing in this case. But 就 here is an adv. (placed after subj.) and it can be used for other purpose. 然后 is conjunction, which can go before the subject. You can see them used in one sentence as 然后他就去吃饭了。
Do u have more explain for this verb 就
Not really, but I am happy to answer your questions if you have any more confusion about it.
what's the difference between 就 and 然后 then?
然后 is conjunction, 就 is adv.
They can essentially show up in the same sentence.
The example sentences at 3:53, don't make any sense to me as a native English speaker. "As long as Taylor is happy", so if Taylor becomes unhappy, his mom won't buy one anymore? I do not understand the context for any of the example sentences.
Your understanding is correct. We can somehow assume that Taylor is a spoiled brat in other sample sentences. In this one, we can maybe imagine that mom is posting a condition...
Jiu shi nan. Xie Xie.🤔😏😊
I would love to be rich like taylor to use 就 in my life hahahaha
I want to become taylor :))
1。 做晚饭就打扫干净厨房。
2. 如果你想玩就玩。
3. 这是我爸爸, 如果我想玩, 他和我就玩。
老师,你看看我的句子, 对不对?
You can find the answer to the Challenge questions on my website. Thank you.
LAOSHE, NIN TAI BANGLA.
妈妈不管Taylor, 他要买哪个电脑就买哪个。Should be translated into " Mom doesn't care what Taylor wants, he can decide whichever computer as he wants."
There are two meanings of 管:
1.To care
2.To manage
I think you can interpret it either way.
so 年轻人玩了几下就放弃了,说太深奥。(context: he is talking about an online game) 就 here is an adverb and means “then”? its not a conjunction??
Yes
