    #7 Pupusas
We’re going to be starting off this video with one of our all-time favorite recipes. Why are they our favorite? Well, because we never liked eating tortillas as is. They’re kind of dry. Not the Pupusas. They’re stuffed tortillas and are a cheap way to fill up if you’re on a budget. They’re soft and have a crunchy shell
These bad boys are made from a corn flour dough which is stuffed with all sorts of goodies. Some like to fill them with refried beans, others like them with some oozing and hot cheese, but we prefer them with some cooked pork. The recipes are to die for, especially when served with a hefty portion of salsa and that fresh cabbage.
    #6 Garnachas
Who’s in the mood for some crispy-fried cough with a meat mixture on top? If you said yes, you’re not the only one. Everyone loves the Garnachas.
They’re made with a mixture of meat and veggies that are fried together until soft and tender. The garlic, the green onions, the chili and the meat are all fried with some spices, and set to the side.
Then they SMASH THAT LIKE BUTTON, JUST LIKE YOU SHOULD DO IF YOU HAVEN’T ALREADY, BUT NO, in reality, they prepare the deep- fried dough patties that are going to hold the meat mix. And finally, you can take some of that fresh cabbage, but some like to fry it up a little bit with some chili and some carrots until it’s soft. A hefty serving of about 10 Garnachas are served on a plate with some cabbage in the middle and some salsa for dipping. Now that’s what you call delicious.
    #5 Hilachas
Hilachas means “rags” and don’t go off thinking that this dish is made with dirty rags that they put in a pot and boil with some spices. The dish has gotten this name because of the meat used inside the HIlachas that shreds easily.
First of all, they cook the meat until very tender and you can pull it apart with your hands. Then, they take out the meat and cook the tomatoes and chilis inside the pot. All of that is blended together, they add in the shredded meat. Then they add the chunks of carrots and potatoes and you’re ready to stuff yo’ face!
    #4 Mole de Platano
Now, we know some people will find the idea of mixing chocolate and tomatoes a bit crazy, but this is one of the most popular deserts in Guatemala. First of all, they boil the tomatoes and the dried chilis with some cinnamon. Once tender, they blend them all together.
In the meantime, they fry chunks of plantain and they set it to one side. The tomato mixture is added to a pot and then they throw in some chocolate, wait for it to melt and chuck in the fried plantains. The desert is served with some toasted sesame seeds on top… and we like it served in a bucket… if possible.
    #3 Kack’Ik
This is the chicken stew that people can actually fight over. It’s so good that you’ll forget how much you’ve had and just keep coming back for more. After they boil the chicken legs and wings with some onions and parsley, they scorch the tomatoes, chilis and garlic in a pan. Everything is put inside a blender, finely processed and added to a pot. Then they add some water and leave it to cook on the stove for about an hour. Served with a side of tamales or rice, it’s absolutely delicious.
    #2 Rellenitos
If you ever come across these little fried Guatemalan donuts, just get as many of them as you can… especially if you have a sweet tooth. They’re made with some refried bean paste as filling and some boiled and mashed plantain. Once stuffed, they’re deep fried and ready to be eaten… usually rolled in some brown sugar.
    #1 Chicken Pepian
This dish is so popular in the country, it can be considered a national dish. Once the Spanish and Maya cultures have fused, the Chicken Pepian was born. The chicken along with the spicy stew is served along with either rice or tortillas, and sometimes… for those who love to experiment, you can even find some fruit inside like pear or squash. Also, you can replace the chicken with pork or beef. If you’re on the fence about these new variations, just go with the regular. You’ll love it!

And with pronunciation, where do I begin. Let’s start with the easy ones. In Spanish the “H” is silent (so check your “hilachas” pronunciation) and a double “L” sounds like a “Y” (so it’s not tortiLas or reLenitos.) And don’t let me get on the accents…
