- Anthony Davis suffered a finger sprain against the Portland Trailblazers Friday night. It is estimated he could miss 1-2 weeks with this injury.
In this video we'll look at footage of the injury and then go over some basic anatomy and mechanisms of finger sprains, as well as how we manage and treat them.

UPDATE: 1/23, now we are learning hand specialists saw Davis and are more concerned about a volar plate avulsion fracture from hyperextension of the finger. I briefly touched on this sort of thing around 4:45. As mentioned this is a more serious injury but hopefully it still gets him back soon!
Brian Sutterer MD zach miller?
I have no admiration to be a doctor or anything close to it but I still watch every video because they are simply amazing and unique. It helps me understand why players need a certain amount of time to heal or why similar injuries might happen or reoccur

Thank you FBI, or should I say, Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Squishy Piggy Greg oden never played for the spurs dumbass
Squishy Piggy Imagine calling someone a dumbass and then following that up by saying something dumb
Damien Perez his ass won’t respond back because he knows he fucked Ik 😂😂😂
David Robinson?
I’m very glad you went over the treatment methods more in depth in this video. I hope you continue to do the same for future videos
Just recently got into this channel from another video regarding Demarcus Cousins. Got instantly hooked up to it, especially since I'm in to sports and the NBA, and of course an aspiring doctor. Looking forward for more great content like this, especially past injuries with more anatomic talk.
Awesome videos, man. I’m currently studying to become a PA so these videos make my anatomy lessons a lot more relevant and fun. Keep up the good work!
Please do a Michael Porter Jr. back injury and why he hasn't played a single game in the NBA
Sky Blue or college game
He did it !!
i love how much effort you put into these videos keep it up!
Can you please explain Yao Ming knee injuries that forced him to retire? Great video as always
reactiv he was huge, from all the pressure from his upper body pushing down on his lower body caused his legs and feet to break and every time it happened it just made it easier for him to get frequent injuries so he had to retire.
Apprently Yao Ming’s name is actually Ming Yao. In Asia, people are known by their last name first. So if your first name is Ming, and your last name is Yao, in China, your known as Yao Ming, but I guess no one on either end realized that if he was moving to America, he should be Ming Yao, so the name Yao Ming stuck.
@@sharpperfect4984 I'm pretty sure it's the other way around, where they are known by there last name first. like he is known as Ming Yao in China because they use last names first
Drake Gabe My bad. I mised type.
@@sharpperfect4984 it's all good
I had this happen this season and it healed in about a week and a half. This was so cool to see why this happened and I learned a bit about my hands. Keep up the great work!
That's what I like to hear! Glad it was so quick, most are
How bad did it hurt? & did it swell
@@versatillion15 if I remember correctly, it hurt to put pressure on it, but I could still play. Not too terrible on the pain scale, but more of an annoyance
As someone who has Brocken their finger twice and sprained it twice, this was very helpful and entertaining. Keep up the good work 🙂
Did you sprain the same one twice as I have just sprained the finger next to my thumb for the second time in the year and it swells up quite a bit in the middle area, if so does your finger feel worse now that you’ve damaged it a couple of times or can you still use it as notmal
Thank You for This DOC Sutterer . it Helps a lot.
love ur vids! u clearly put a lot of time into them!
To improve you chanel, I believe your viewers would really like to hear more about how injuries could affect the players play/abilities as well as how it could influence their career.
Good thought, thank you. Will remember that for future vids
Brian Sutterer MD also time table how long they’ll be out
Very informative video. Thanks Doc
Great video as always!
Amazing video man very well broken down
Awesome video
Excellent!!! Bravo!!
I was watching this video and im excited to watch your video on Lonzo Ball’s Ankle Sprain. Its very educational!
Yea we'll see what they put out. I can't speculate on things and need some more info than just "ankle sprain to really talk about it more and actually give useful info
Once again another great video! You definitely have found a unsaturated area of content!
Doc . . . YOU ~ ROCK ! !
I just sprained my fingers and I was looking for a faster solution
Thanks, helped a lot
Thank you 🙏
could you do a video on a tommy john injury. i feel like it would make a great video
This video was so vivid and concise. I severely sprained my pinky recently. It was disjointed so I snapped it back in place. X-rays indicated it to be a sprain. I followed RICE and no serious swelling occurred, but six weeks out there is still some swelling and tenderness and I still don’t have full range of motion, could that be a problem for AD? Can’t this type of injury lead to permanent disfigurement and loss of flexibility? That’s the issue your video didn’t address. And one to two weeks seems overly optimistic; from personal experience these injuries can take months even years of recovery time.
You should make a video on Brandon Roy. That guy had so much potential but had to retire before he reached 30. 😔
Do ohtani’s Tommy John injury and what’s Tommy John surgery..
You should do a video about Tim Don. The ironman athlete who fractured his neck before Kona 2017. Real amazing story that he was able to recover at his age and compete at Kona in 2018.
It feels like every time I play basketball I get my fingers jammed. I wasn’t sure if it’s partly because my fingers are kinda thin :/
Adnan I don’t think it’s that your fingers are thing but it might be, it could just be that you get them easier. I sometimes get them but I don’t get them every-time, it might be because I have don’t have thin fingers. You should ask a doctor about it and see why.
Adnan A happened to me a lot but it doesn’t happen anymore after I worked on my ball handling
JohnEliteGamer3 well I have fairly fat fingers and I can’t remember the last time I jammed one 🤷♂️
@@ogbobbyjohnson7221 lmao same
OG Bobby Johnson for me that happened to me when I was younger it almost never happens to me anymore
Great video
I just got a Collateral Ligament Injury today old video but still a good break down
This is so darn insightful
And in laymen terms
Tore a ligament in my thumb about 6 years ago and it’s never been quite the same. Get some slight soreness from simple things such as an analog controller for a ps4
Yoooo wassup bruh! Luv ye channel
Thank you!!
Really cool video. Pretty sure you get suggested this a lot, but you should make a video on Paul George injury or Gordon Hayward injury. Awesome work
Haha thank you and yes I do but I like seeing what people are interested in.
Do a video on kristaps porzingis ACL injury from last season plz
Thanks
This exact injury happened to me yesterday from ballet T.T. Thank you for the video! My doc said no broken bones, so I’m guessing I’ll need 2-3 weeks to recover too...
So how much time your injury took ?
@@TechnologyAtoZ It was okay after like a month but you'll feel a bit of that achiness for like another 6 months or so. You can remove the buddy tape after about 2 to 3 weeks. But I would listen to your doctor.
You should review Ryan shaziar’s spine injury even though it was a while ago
also, cpuld u do cp3’s hamstrings? that would be amazing
I smashed my finger the hardest i ever had before (so hard it split my skin in a different place) so this helped me know what to look for! It hurts on the proximal part of my index finger but it hurts more where the bone is rather than the ligament, and whenever i touch/rub it to see if kts ok i get a weird numb/tingle sensation in my thumb area. Its freekin me out
I remember those days I actually dislocated ring finger and jammed my index knuckle and it had scar tissue build up
Damnn this doc is underrated..
You should do a video on CTE
Yep i got that injury the ball bounce in to my finger the same spot that shown it really hurts 🤕🤕
Hi Brian hope you are doing well? can you make a video on mallet finger ? thank you for your consideration Cheers !
NOOOOOOOOOOO! Well it's not that serious, I got scared. Thanks for the info Doc!
Keep up the great videos
@YES I SAID IT!! Trade deadline
Thank you, but could you also offer ways to Prevent Such Injuries? Is there a self taught way to build and strengthen ligaments in fingers to not only prevent but to recover? Thank you
brings me back to my old days, i used to practice martial arts and during one sparring my ring finger got kicked and bent upwards. now said finger could be bent upwards if i pull it that way

There was literally me in gym today
Can you explain why I keep jamming my finger when I tip a pass and it heals in like three days. Or is that not a jammed finger?
Just wondering if there’s any ways to prevent getting a finger sprain like this one?
You should definitely do Shazier's injury!

@@BrianSuttererMD Great videos, keep it up!
Hey doc quick question is it true that an apple a day keeps the doctor away?
Do you know any rehab for jammed index finger?I can't do close fist anymore because of that.

I used to sprain my fingers all the time playing basketball in school and I never got to miss 1-2 weeks! They must be really trying to play it safe since they need AD healthy long term
YES I SAID IT!! Adrenaline.
Nathan Beach he has to kiss 1-2 weeks because nba players normally play 3 or 4 games a week
Explain Michael Porter Jr. Injury pls
What about on the fingertip doctor? I have an injury that feels like a jam but it's lasted for over 2 weeks?
I think I damaged a ligament near my second knuckle, but can’t put a splint on it because it won’t bend all the way up. Additionally, It hurts if I put pressure on it. I’m planning to tape it to the back of my middle finger for my basketball match tonight.
Hack to the finger: So I got a sprained finger and got bandages and tied it to my finger next to it, this way is kept it straight and healed fast then ever! I weared a sprain too but it made my finger blue and purple-
Hey Dr- i got a Ligament injury to my wrist called the TFCC. Is this what the Milwaukee bucks player john henson also has?
In basketball the ball jared my finger and now its been a year but it gets easily jared and it goes away the next day but a little impact on the finger makes it feel jared again.
Any way to prevent?
Haven’t gone to the doctor, but pretty sure I broke my pinky , I’ve been using one popsicle stick and 3 matchsticks , and applying pressure with tape away from the damaged bone. I also ice it twice a day and take atleast one ibuprofen when needed to manage swelling ,because I have to use the hand for work so the pinky will swell back up if aggravated , but after ice and splinted back up moderately tight , I get instant relief , hoping all heals well !
1.I have pain in my right hand index finger 😢, seems it is caused by using mouse...
2.There seems to be a very little swelling just above the joint of index finger ...Not sure if it is some fluid or some air that's blocked at the joint of my index finger.
Could you please help
I have a sprain, that’s why I’m watching this. I NEED TO LEARNN REE
Can you do lonzo ball injury, why he is not playing well.
May you break down Lonzo Ball's injury?
I’m a college football prospect, and a few months ago my trainer told me I sprained my left ring finger, I saw him today and he told me it still hasn’t healed, is that because I haven’t protected it well enough? Please answer this, some of these colleges are becoming more and more hesitant to offer me a scholarship
Hey doctor is it bad to ice a lot? Because you need inflammation to heal right?
Could you please do Peyton Mannings neck injuries
I sprained my middle finger yesterday
I just sprained my finger 😢😢
Doc every time I sprain a finger they never fully recover :( I just sprained that blue tendon that goes all the way to the tip of my ring finger and every morning I wake up for work I’m in pain and it’s hard to get it warmed up to start moving it
Any tips ?
can u do the lonzo ball injury
Don't know much about it yet..need more details on what sort of sprain it is to make it worth a video. If it's a routine sprain, no big deal. If it's a high sprain I'll probably do a vid

What happens if you do not manage your sprained finger?
Can get something called a contracture where the ligaments and tendons can get really tight and scarred to where you can't move your fingers well
@@BrianSuttererMD Ok thank you!
Brian Sutterer MD what about back contractures? I got diagnosed with it a while back taking lots meds... Recently got that to be chronic due lifting heavy barbell rows. I just jammed my finger really bad but I don't know what happened. Someone ran past me while playing basketball and my index finger started hurting like crazy. It's the joint closest to the palm. Will this take longer to heal?
How long did it take to heal?
Lonzo ball ankle injury
I "jammed" my ring finger on my throwing hand during football freshmen year of high school playing quarterback. It had turned blue and purple somewhat so I thought it could've just been a severe Sprain so I kept playing. I just played through the pain and it lasted I want to say 8 or so months, i also play basketball then baseball so my finger never really had the proper time to heal until school was over. Do you think It could've been just a sprain that I kept from healing or could it have been something else?
@@NotFromHere. my finger healed pretty well not bent strangely or anything
