some injuries don't look bad but man they are unlucky. If there is one piece of evidence for God not existing it's that his greatest athlete was struck down by a one in a million incurable injury.
@@spjr99 God has deeper wisdom than allowing someone to keep playing when he’s the one who created them to be that successful in the first place. You don’t know what else could have happened if he kept playing.
I watched Bo Jackson play from his days in Auburn to the NFL with the Raiders. Even though I was a "San Diego" Charger fan at the time I couldn't help but marvel at his combination of speed and power. Incredible athlete, too bad his playing days were cut short from a rare football injury.
You know, growing up. Some of us didn’t think we could be doctors. I’ve been watching you off and on over the years. You’ve taught me a lot. I don’t have children yet. When I do, I can honestly say doctors like you and videos such as yours have restored my faith in becoming a doctor. My children will be an extension of me. If they become doctor, I became a doctor!
Great explanation. I had avascular necrosis of my left hip and had it replaced successfully 4 years ago. Mine took 3 or 4 years to develop after a fall.
Yes please do and also his recovery. After his neck surgery, he could barely throw the ball 10 yards. Then a year later is breaking records all over the place. Then regressed badly to the point where he was the worst starting QB in the league. There were reports that HGH was shipped to his house, but he claimed that they were for his wife and he didn't touch them. I'm not making any accusations he took any, but what are the effects of HGH? Would it even even help? Anyways it's a curious case of fast recovery and fast collapse. BTW, love your channel. It's a whole new dimension of insight into sports!
Doctor Sutterer I was broadcasting that game at KYNO-FRESNO live when Bo Jackson was hurt.. We were the Los Ángeles Raiders radio affiliated station. I was also watching it on tv. Thank you for the very simple but very articulate explanation!!
I didn't realize how intricate the hip was until I had surgery to repair an acetabulum impingement. From something that seemed basic ended up taking me a full year to fully recover.
Explaining who Bo Jackson is to my 8yr old and revisiting this clip was very informational. I never understood at the time because it looked like such a normal tackle. Really a shame he couldn't have a full career in either sport because he was definitely gifted.
I like your channel cause ive learned alot and I had anatomy of the body in my freshmen year but I wasnt interested and now im a senior and its quite fascinating how I learn more and more about the human body😀
Great explanation. I wonder if these days an injury like this would be properly diagnosed earlier, so proper treatment could have prevented the end of Bo’s career.
Can you react and explain Zach Miller’s injury? At some point he asked “please don’t cut my leg” I believe he damaged this arteries but I’m not sure how. I wish you the best luck with your channel. I love different and educational content.
Hey Brian. Can you do D-wade vs Westbrook (or someone else) about meniscus removal vs repair. I don't really understand what factors go into that decision.
Good question...surgeons used to cut the meniscus out back in the day but now they try to repair it. If a little bit is just frayed up, they will sometimes shave it down to smooth it out and remove the rough areas. But if it's a big chunk gone they might try to "reattach it" so to speak. If you remove too much you are prone to early arthritis
I thought they said that Bo Jackson actually had an undiagnosed hip defect which caused the injury to become worse. I remember watching this when it first happened and thought that his left leg was in a very awkward position when he was being tackled. I know you pointed that out.
Broke my heart to see Bo running, or rather limping down the line towards the end of his baseball career. I think he was on the white Sox… might have been preseason, too.
My hip is all messed up from PVNS and I'm working towards hip replacement, but trying to prolong the keep from that happening until it's absolutely necessary. People don't realize how bad hip injuries can hurt until you have it happen to you.
I have a question for the doctor. Is it possible that he weaked the ligament or something playing baseball. He was an incredible athlete and never took a play off. Im saying the shear torgue and power of his swing of the bat over time if that makes sense. Could that in any way have helped contribute to his injury?
at the time I felt he had tried to surge away from the leg capture but bcs it was so much tighter than the many he had broken before his power combined w/ the grounded grab to rend his hip
I have avascular necrosis. It freaking sucks. Mine was due to a fracture though. Then they put screws in it. I'm in my 20s. It can happen to anyone. So becareful everyone.
Hi Brian. I’m a current pre-med student and love your videos. I had a quick question tho. Isn’t hyaline cartilage avascular anyways? Any response would be appreciated. Keep making these videos!!
A more inspiring avascular necrosis situation that actually had a happier ending involved former 49ers running back Garrison Hearst. After the injury, to his ankle, it took two years and special transplant surgery for Hearst to defy the odds and bring the 49ers back to playoff caliber status. I don't know if a similar procedure could have saved Bo's hip and career but it's certainly worth a mention here.
Being someone suffering from avascular necrosis and needing total hip replacement in both hips, this video was hard to watch and now I'm all sad again ☹ I am only 29....my surgeon won't do my surgery until my hip collapses. Idk why. But I am always I'm pain and discomfort, I just want to have my surgery already and end this nightmare.
Got a total hip arthroplasty at 25 after breaking my hip in a car accident at 21 years old. My femoral head dislocated and impaled onto my pelvis. Because of my age drs believed they could put humpty dumpty back together with no complications. Xrays kept coming back with darker areas on my femoral head. Very painful and disabling. Avascular femoral head necrosis. Thanks to yoga I can now sit full lotus.
what about the Baseball player , Cody Ross who dislcoated his hip while running to first base, I have never been able to figure out how running to the base caused him to dislocate his hip, AS a side note, the injury happened before he was at the bag he sorta stumbled and hit the base wrong due to blowing out his hip.
I watched this game in 1991 and knew it was a very serious injury the minute it happened. Just something about the pull on the right leg relative to where his left leg planted.
Would be cool if you did isaiah Thomas and his hip labrum. I’ve have two hip labrum surgeries and it’s annoying the way the media portrayed isaiah Thomas’s injury.
I’m a Broncos fan. Absolutely hate the Raiders. But, I loved Bo Jackson as an athlete because he transcended team. He’s a very rare athlete where you are just fortunate to have seen stampede over or fly by someone like a downhill freight train. Earl Campbell, Deion Sanders, Barry Sanders, even Mike Vick. But Bo might be the very best athlete I ever saw that wore both uniforms. Was very sad his football career ended with that play. And a class act, just like Shaq. You have to luv the guy
If you're here after the Tua injury, will try to get a vid up later tonight
I am. I wanted to get a better understanding of his possible injury.
I wanted to see if this will end Tuas career
Thanks. Found this great video trying to understand Tua's injury.
Just got here because of the Tua injury. Thanks.

Very well explained, thanks. So much going on in the hip joint area. Lose the blood flow, lose the cells.

I’m so glad I found this!!!! Very informative and easy to understand. Thank you for doing this!
Damn, Bo Jackson was the reason why I started watching Football & I would've watched Baseball because of him as well.
Wasn’t it Bo Jackson’s own speed and strength that pulled his hip out with his inertia?
Mason Kinter that’s the theory
Pretty much yeah he was tpo fast for his own good
Steroids ate his hip away
