I grew up watching Rik Mayall on the Young Ones and this was my favourite scene ever! Had me crying with laughter when I first saw this back in my school days. 'Try and make me.. Farty breath!' I just cried with laughter again having not seen this in years. RIP Rik Mayall
We sow the seed, nature grows the seed and then we eat the seed. It sounds like one of Neil's hippie philosophies, but ends up just being something Mike told him.
The happy music it plays between some scene cuts is I'm sure a reference to a British sitcom called "The Good Life" about people being self sufficient that had music like that.
It’s a veritable shoe-in. I was very fortunate to be c. 14yo at the time. All said and done, it still is my favourite thing ever to be aired. I still know virtually all of the dialogue off by heart. RIP Rik 😥
Rik Mayal had some talent,he reminded me of old steptoe in parts here,my old man used to kick off when i hogged THE family TV to watch that shite lol good times
Yeah, Rik Mayall was great. He took quite a bit from Leonard Rossiter too - especially that hands on ribcage (instead of hands on hips) stance, that Rossiter used all the time for Rigsby.
+oneworldfamily I never understood why they did that. Randomness is only funny to me as long as it has at least SOME tiny amount of meaning to it. I always thought my VHS tape had been tampered with lol.
The reason is that in the original broadcasts they put in a load of 'subliminal messages' with stupid things in them, but I think they were forced to edit them out in subsequent releases.
Everyone was paranoid about subliminal messages at the time, so they poked fun at the hysteria by putting in meaningless subliminal messages (but making them just long enough for them to be noticeable) to poke fun at everyone worried about them.
4:09 is a frog, + tadpole and/or flying insect. Easily seen at reduced speed. I wonder what subliminal effect its meant to have, was very popular at one time, especially on Second Side Up here on RUclips and the BBC iPlayer, I hear. Tattipoos.
hey that curly haired dude appears later in a bottom episode and kicks riks character Richie in the bullocks for shooting him in the eye with a b.b gun
Yep Arden & Frost were repeating characters french & saunders also ,robbie coltrane ,tony robisnon ,Paul merton ( credited as paul martin ) hale + pace terry jones ,obviously Mike is Little Dave Hedgehog in Bottom ,lots of familiar faces
I always loved the bit when he attacked the panda on the way down stairs 😂
Ok everyone, wait until Christopher tells you which parts are funny or not before commenting.
FAVORITE of mine too😂🤙
Same here, I watched it on VHS over and over. What episode was that in. I know it was his one but can’t find the name..?
10 points for the name of this episode
@@directtalk1 The episode is called "Sick" 👍

This one and the episode with the atomic bomb crashed in the kitchen...
@@manuell3505 Just after the Yanks got Sat nav I guess. Sweden had Garmin back in '64. Yanks got it a lot later
Me toooo!!!! Rik forever 💓💕💓💕💓 Neil 💚 Seeds
vizmetro Farty Breath. One of the all time best insults.
I quote that line all the time
Back then, anyone called Neil was automatically called orange peel after this sketch😂
Yep. You're right! 😁 😁
😂 Yep, me too 😂 🙏 thank you Rik 🙏 RIP 🙏
Funniest comedy growing up in the 80s. Would recite this
with my mates at school 😁
I always loved the accusing garden gnome.
''don't tell me to shut up you spotty little bastard'' always gets me lmaoooo
Vyvyans 'Rik, tell your conscience to shut up, I'm trying to sleep' gets me
my favourite Young Ones clip-best line..."I've killed a hippie...and now I'll have to pay" Brilliant!
I always thought that Eric Cartman's anti-hippy obsession was nicked directly from Rik's.
@@aerialkate oh yeah, you're right!
It's a garden gnome I accidentally cracked
"burn the corpse, burn the corpse, burn, burn. God, is just like Neil to be all soggy."
Even though it's hilarious, it really does show how talented Rik was that he added genuine anguish to the "Neil Neil, orange peel" monologue.
genius
Was "NNOP" a thing before the young ones? I get people of all sorts of ages/demographics addressing me as such
Genius, no other words for this programe, just the greatest of all time, nothing as ever come close to topping this iconic show.
The gnome that chimes in gets me every time.
HE'S JUST KILLED A HIPPY EVERYBODY!!
We sow the seed, nature grows the seed and then we eat the seed.
It sounds like one of Neil's hippie philosophies, but ends up just being something Mike told him.
It's not funny. While I love The Young Ones Neil prattling on about seeds was extremely irritating
@@benjaminwilliams1292 Do you get anything in The Young Ones because that was Neil's whole character?
The happy music it plays between some scene cuts is I'm sure a reference to a British sitcom called "The Good Life" about people being self sufficient that had music like that.
I nearly wore the tape out rewinding the “What a load of old crap!” line when I was a kid.
My mate at school got called Neil, Neil orange peel for about 5 years because of this 😁
Why though?
@The Armchair SpacemanTM alright simmer down you old bitch
@Troll King Yeah but you don't understand, you see, we sow the seeds.... Nature grows the seeds....
@Red Black Red Black...... Reeedd Bllaacckk, this is the voice of your conscience speaking.....
@Tom's Ghost did you learn much at school? - and if so how much of it was relevant to the rest of your life - come on tell me honestly.
Absolutely Brilliant ! First shown in Summer 1984.
Rik, Rik, this is the voice of your conscience speaking! Classic
Evolution of the seed
- sow the seed
- grow the seed
- eat the seed
"Not bloody yours matey" Brilliant!
Quite possibly the funniest show ever made
Not just 'quite possibly' it 'is'
It’s a veritable shoe-in. I was very fortunate to be c. 14yo at the time.

Absolutely superb. Time has not diminished it either.

Oh those great MTV years of the early 80s, I miss them soo
greatest show of all time.
“Don’t tell me to shut up you spotty little bastard!”
This means that Neil was a plant all along. Bloody hippy.
Remember, We Sow the seed, Nature grows the seed then we eat the seed.
Benjamin Anderson I'll try to remember that👍🏽
Yes but who wants to sow, grow, and eat anything called Neil? Especially after he's been planted in fertilizer, he might have ecoili in him.
Does that mean we have to eat Neil now?
The garden gnome is hilarious 🤣

Oh Neil, Neil, orange peel. If only I could see you again.
Hello Rick! x3
I miss watching The Young Ones. It came on Sunday on MTV
Anyone else see the frog at 4:09
@Sid Tanner they did that on three occasions - I never saw why unless it was an in joke with the production team.
@@revol148 They did it to give the people who bought the VHS something to look for.
that's the Acid kicking in.
20 years after I first saw it and I still do the "boing" thing, no idea what that stuck in my head
Steve Holland magic roundabout reference
one of the best scenes.
'WE SOW THE SEED, NATURE GROWS THE SEED, WE EAT THE SEED..."
Every time I have a bad thought about myself: GET OUT OF MY HEAD, POO-HOLE!!!
Even too this day if I see someone resembling Neil i start cracking up 😂
I remember pausing this one to see the frame of the jumping tree frog,, a trick the producers did for the very same reason.
Did anybody catch the music from the Good Life? lol
Sadly, unlike those innocent days, Monsanto will now charge patent fees for the killing of a hippy
What?
Don't tell me to shut up your spotty little bastard
Negative reality inversion
Robin Gilliver i get it
Gawd, he was superb on so many levels.
this was the best scene in the whole show... hilarious
Night of the living neils 😂😂
I love how Rik tries to drink in a cool old fashion and fails lol
That fella with the distictive laugh in the audience is hilarious as well 😂
Hello Rick!
The continuing tradition of cutting off young ones clips before they end
Nobody's doing a two ton poo in my garden ! Classic
"Oh no !!!" "I killed a Hippie !!!"
This is the funniest scene from The Young Ones. NOT BLOODY YOURS MATEY!!
That single frame leaping frog at 4:09 was weird!

We SOW THE SEED!
And the best line has been cut off at the end for which reason?
What’s with the frog at 4:10
"we would've brought 'Arry, but we don't know anyone called 'Arry"
