i love the way Neil says "the belly of your woooooman."
I just love how they add "you bastards" in the letter.
One of my favourite jokes in this scene, is how Rik calls out Neil for assuming that the bank manager is a man, even though at 1:10 Rik says "stick your tounge straight down the back of *his* trousers".
I don't know whether it was on purpose, but it perfectly encapsulates Rik's hypocrisy.
Good spot, I'd never noticed that.
And also these days having a beard would not mean you are not a woman!
Literally 20 seconds prior Ric assumed that he was a man lol genius
purpose *
@@onevastanus Thanks :)
This has got to be the best scene from the Young Ones. Man, you'll be missed Rik.
It's now 2022. And he IS ;-(
One of the best, surely, but I have a soft spot for the "No more telly..." scene.
Even when set against Vyvian declaring ' I'm bored'.? Rik in Yellow dungarees listening to Cliff
This clip is becoming scarily more relevant....
This scene was referenced by Metallica in the liner notes for the Master of Puppets album in 1986. They included The Young Ones in the "extra special thanks" section and ended the overall dedications "boom shanka to all"
Yes! So I wasn't the only one way back in 1986 that noticed that.
I wonder if the skier at 2:36 has anything to do with ... anything.
I can't stand Metallica and no wonder they quoted Neil.
@@Bless-the-Name lol
@@paulwolffart1251 thank I was born back then and couldn't gas. 😶
'I'm so hungry I can eat my own earwax! And we all know how horrid that tastes, right kids ;D' Lol, Rik is the best!
"Don't you want your snow, Vivian?"
"Ah, now, I didn't say that, did I?"
Love that bit.
None of this was said...
Vyvyan: Oh God, this is disgusting!
God: Don't blame me! I didn't cook it, alright?
Love Neil. Long live the Young Ones!!!
2:36 gotta love that quick skiing image.
I always thought there was something wrong with my VHS tape as it did the same thing!
Yeah if you look closely on some of the episodes they flash random pics for no reason
There's a jumping frog in the episode when Rik hits Neil with a shovel.
This is subliminal messaging or advertising apparently. Im not sure if it was experimental or what the images were. I think it's a banned practice nowawdays
@@fillipo1972 They purposefully slipped pictures into the episodes as a joke, to make fun of contemporary fears of that. They let them last a little bit too long so audiences would have noticed something for sure. It was intentional as a meta-joke
Once again, Viv is the voice of reason. Of course, Rick’s observation about Neil’s remarks were hilarious.
“Might as well stick your tongue down the back of his trousers.”
BOOM SHANKA!!!!
Vyvyan: why can't we have some decent food?
Neil: because we haven't got any bread
Vyvyan: well why don't we get some bread?!
Neil: because vyvyan we haven't got any breeead" 😂
Need to write this to my landlord
I put this in most birthday cards, not going to lie.
I do this to my friends who are young ones fans. Happy birthday you bastard, the seed of your loin has been fruitful in many women
LOL
Why does this clip make me want to go on a skiing holiday...?
Justin Kalman As my wife holds all the money, it makes me want to stick my tongue straight down the front t of her knickers
Subliminal messages. The 80s were full of them. Especially this show...
I saw it too. Totally subliminal!
I couldn't pass any of my o' levels or even CSE's back then... but I still know and knew this entire sketch and 'letter' perfectly... even to this day :)
Lol same 👍👍
I bet you're happier than if you had passed everything though.
That sounds like autism to me (speaking from experience).
Young Ones rule!!!! Hands down, the best ever.
"neil wheres my supper?"
"coming!"
"it's risotto"
All of a sudden I want to become a downhill skiier
I think I'm going to cross-stitch Neil's letter and hang it up in my living room over the fireplace or by the front door.... Or over my bed like The Lord's Prayer.
Not only does Greg Davies look like a large version of Rik Mayall but he sounds like him to
I think Rik Mayall looks like a small Greg Davies!
This is a prophecy 😂😂😂😂😂❤
Rip rik mayall , comedy genius.
You're not very comfortable, Rik. No, I'm bloody not!
I loved the Young Ones, hilarious comedy. I did notice in some episodes that during the scenes on occasion there would be a brief flash on screen of a totally random image almost as if the film was accidentally recorded over or a subliminal image. In this clip watch carefully between 2:35 and 2:37 you will see a skier, I'm not sure if that was deliberate but it does appear in the DVD too.
I recall it was part of a BBC competition. There were a few subliminal images to spot.
its an in house gag, theres one in every episode :)
Yes, it was broadcast with the subliminal image. In this case the skier was relevant to the topic of the snow Neil serves. I don’t think the subliminal images always had a relevance to the scene though. It was an in-house joke.
I noticed that when it all first came out on TV and then later on DVD and did wonder what on Earth those were. Now I know.
Aye, sometimes they were confusing & so brief! There's 1 (@least) in every episode indeed, but sure there's been scenes shortened or cut out over the yrs though!!
When I was 18 I wrote this exact letter to the bank as a laugh. Now I own 36 branches.
I reckon they did those images so it would make people want to buy the VHS so they can pause and see what it was
the weirdness of the skijumper at 2:36
They would put random "subliminal" images into episodes.
I remember seeing that in 1986 when I used to watch The Young Ones on Mtv on Sunday nights.
I had to mess with the VCR to be sure it was really there.
'Well if that doesn't work, I don't know what will.'
Trouble is though the fire is going down, chuck it on the fire
I have a similar experience when I get my friends to help me write a letter, give me a job you bastard!
The skier is a joke. This was back in the days when people were very paranoid about subliminal messages. The skier flashes past slow enough to be noticed though so it's not a real subliminal message. Just poking fun at people's fears. There are similar images/clips in most episodes of The Young Ones. I was fairly confused by that as well when I was a child and had most of this series on VHS. =P
Love the way they tuck into the snow regardless! Mike don't you want your viv, No now mike i didn't say that" haha
I put boomshanka in my senior yearbook
Very accurate uni lifestyle honestly
I love these guys they were awesome ! I miss this shit.
lol person skiing at 2:37
The best part is how you cut off the start so we miss the premise of the whole bit and the part where Neil says what he's actually doing. Pure editing genius 👏
and if you're going to add the next joke, why cut off the last few lines.
editor either had no comedic timing, or straight up didn't care
All the BBC clips are like this. It has to be deliberate. No one with more than two brain cells to rub together could be this ham fisted. The fact they cut off part of the relevant scene then leave on part of an irelevant one is a bit of a giveaway.
Absolutly love when Neil takes a (bath).
"Problem is we're running low on fuel, put it on the fire!"
I am guessing that's way they are trying to help him write a letter to his Bank manger so they can have some more money so they can buy more fuel for their fire and to pay for their shopping? and pay the rent.
This is pretty much every corporate team meeting since 2001
Rik: "Why don't you go down there now and stick your tongue down the back of HIS trousers?"
Also Rik: "A ha! And what makes you think your bank manager's a man?"
That brought me back... Thanks
Boomshanka
Neil obviously has yet to see that lady with a beard that won the eurovision song contest in 2019 lol 😂
one of their very best bits :D
Thank you to The Young Ones for inspiring the name of a 311 song.
They were laughing at subliminal messages
Brilliant
Well, if that doesn't work I don't know what will!
Classic!
BBC.
WHAT ARE YA DOIN
BRING
THIS
BACK
NOW
You see this letter on the DVD menu which is an anarchism as it was chucked on the fire. I do use this as a template when writing my letters! Assertive but fluffed up and to the point
Fire place lots of heat there
Neil was too polite to be mean but he didn’t want to be bullied by his housemates
top scene!
12 dislikes....wouldnt be our local friendly bank managers...would it?
I miss being able to see the dislikes. I loved hating on the haters.
Obviously, all were left by fascist bully bois.
Wow I really want to go skiing now
lol guys stip on 2:36
Well ... If that doesn't work, I don't know what will
@2:36 downhill skiier for a few frames 'subliminal messaging man'
BOOMSHANKA !
I KNOW SNOW WHEN I SEE IT!
I still call risotto “snow.” 😂
My home recording of this episode started at the exact same moment. Weird. :b
why does it start without the intro to the bit, and end missing the final part of the snow-eating?
Because the person who did the deliberate editing butcher job probably thinks it'll annoy us into going and buying the series.
haha yeh i used to have this on video, its also on the dvd version aswell and never knew what that was
Did I just see a flash advertisement at 2:35???
2:35
ski
0:36 Commander Staal of the Tenth Sontaran Fleet and Lord Kiv of Thoros Beta!
its so risky, but so funny.
2:36
he told him it was resotto lol
@pmalone4 yeah they did that alot with this series, random pictures and skits popping up! It made for great conversation while we were all whacked out back in the day.
@HPpsychedelicatessen How much time did I spend pressing pause/rewind/play trying to capture those little pictures....
@Telescopicz if you watch all the other episodes they often put litle clips (lasting under a second) in for no reason, in one episode there is a pigion
even a video with bbc in the heading starts with a bloody advert ... GIVE ME MORE MONEY
In a yellow jumpsuit? me too!!!!
i wonder why?
Yes. I did.
check out @ 2:37, that make sense...
@vampirefreeak375 no they used to put flash frames in because a famous reporter had got into a lot of trouble whilst they were filming by putting flash frames into his reports on ITV (or ch4 cant remember). They were not broadcast but they are on the VHS/DVD copiess
2 mins 36 seconds did anyone else see a Downhill Skier flash frame ?
Yes, those used to be there on the original broadcast too.
Yep. Half the fun, every week, was to freeze frame these flashes, on my Philips 1700. !!!
living robot productions I know for some reason in all the episodes there is an image that flashes in for a second. in one there was a frog
living robot productions The producers did it as a joke, they were trying to make people figure out a load of pointless jibberish. ;)
Wondering what the subliminal was
It wouldn't have worked anyway.
The bank probably has a couple thousand customers named Neil.
Why did Neil come back in with two plates if Rick wasn't knocked out yet when he went out?
Two hands?
They had already eaten?
You seem like a pretty stable guy
I love Neil. He annoys me, but he has a cute side too.. He's a waste of time. But seems a good friend. 👍🏻❤️
Wow! Totally forgot about this show!
did anybody see the skier at around 2:35?
Love Ade edmonson is because comedy always shouting outburst i wish
I’ll be him
This is a great example of how perfectly reasonable ideas are turned into turd sandwiches by a committee.
whats the image in 2:36
What's with the random picture of a skier?
🤣🤣🤣
@Hubbingbird yea
🤣🤣
What's with the skier at 2:37?
risotto
2 people work in banks
@NintendoKiddd One of them is that bank manager.
@damedavid
The USA version of the DVD set (Every Stupid Episode) is exactly as I remember seeing it on TV
