Agree on small cab ..ugh However JEEP like all old Jeeps were built for narrow trails ,old mining roads and off highway camping and so on .
Not for commuting in today's world . The J truck and wagoneer are purpose built for this use , hence the truck is narrower than all other trucks , just as a CJ-5 or Jeepster commandos are built . It does offer a REAL 8ft bed unlike all modern trucks that can't carry a sheet of plywood or much else. You own a J truck for what it is not what it is not . As for the carb issue , your correct they are from a time when it WAS the technology . However out in the sticks ..you'll be able to fix most any issue with the engine with a few tools , hose ot duct tape to get you back home or out of the boondocks. Modern Jeep or any other vehicle if it breaks down, you are not fixing it especially if it's fuel injected and your in tank fuel pump dies on you . Lastly yes the beds suck for rust , the bed floor is tied into the bed sides for strength . But resulted in trapping water . So this J10 is built for the environment its best in . Gripes are fine , just understand what you have and why .
BTW the jeep M715 went to war for a reason .
    Good day to all

Nothing wrong with carbs... Updated modern ones dont have that issue of going up hills stalling etc.. updated modern meaning from 80s up 2150 motocrafts on wagoneers ran great. And were eveb auto adjusting for altitude. My 90s carbs hasnt been rebuilt but one time. And it starts every day sith 3 pumps and the rest of the day i just turn the key. The hot start issue is most likely a drain back issue from boiling gasoline in the line and fuel filter. You probably have the tripple nipple fuel filter tilted wrong.. very easy fix. If its cranking slowely when super hot. The starter is being heat soaked and needs replaced most likely
I think your carb needs proffesionally rebuilt if youre having that many issues.
Also you can easily buy lifts and stock leaf springs.. even made in the usa. Your springs are also sagging big time btw i can see it. Lofted springs from 74-84 J10s are everywhere... Rough country.. Sd springs... there are 6+ websites selling springs.. only 480$ for two in the front and another 400$ for rear..
Also your bumper.. factory had solid tubed brush guards. If you can find em.. Very similar to that bumper. Not QUITE as rugged but can easily strengthen for a winch.
All your parts complaints are minor. Its 50 years old . You think theyre will be repro parts for cars foever ?
The rust is the only one ill agree on.. all the FSJs.. cherokees. Wagoneers.. j trucks.. seem to rust in the exact sane damn spots. Had to go through major frame and mediumish body rust and minor floor rust on my 90 Grand Wagoneer.
Fortunatly no one has issues knowing what my GW is.. i get stopped daily in parking lots or gas stations people giving me nothing but praise for the resto and mods i did and stuff to mine.
Why dont you get yourself some fender badging from the kaiser 60s Jeep trucks. That says JEEP on it. If you want people to see its a Jeep without telling them ?
Also your tire issue is just whiney non sense. Vehicles in the 60-70-80s didnt have 37 inch monster tires.. large tires for all terrain or mud terrains were 31-33 inchs.. max. Its just the way vehicles were back then.
Also are your AXLE SHAFTS broken.. or are your U joints broken ?? Cmon . Take the knuckle off.. pull the shafts out get it on a vice and replace the u joints.. which DANA SPICER still makes.
The problem with people not knowing or caring.. is it isnt the average person.. Its the average Jeep snob. The XJ wrangler owners. I brought my 90 to a Jeep 4th of july parade that went up to the mountains. The column of jeeps was 2 miles long on the interstate.. 99% of those people were 2010+ wrangler some XJ owners.. few renegades.
I was the only FSJ.. i have 0 people interested in talking too me. Everyone was just a snob and only wanted to talk about thier red headlights and 37 inch swampers with the / in the headlights to make them evil looking.
Ive tried talkin to random XJ or whatever owners. Their snobs too. All of em.
Only the average day Joe in the parking lot comes up to me and goes oh WOW i had one of these.. or i havent seen these in forever.. or what not. I even had a wrangler owner tell me my 90 Gw isnt a real Jeep.. haha
Also for your steering column.... The J10s in the 70s did hsve tilted steering columns. No idea what youre talkin about ??

It was a rough start at first because of transmission issues and no parts available.
But later on I enjoyed every moment in it!
It's now undergoing a total overhaul and going to get a 12 valve Cummins engine with manual 5 speed and np205 transfer case.
Front axle is a Dana 60 and the rear a 70 with limited slip differential.

The person listing it put it in the wrong location so I was able to get it cheap and that pissed him off but he had to sell it to me because I was the highest bidder. The cab has been on blocks in my 30 x 36-foot metal building for over 10 years. I drove it home to Virginia. The bed has been outside with a camper top on it for the same length of time and it still doesn't have surface rust. I have the tailgate and the original step bumper. I have a rebuilt 4.2 L engine on an engine stand and a Howell EFI kit to do the conversion. I am just now getting around to giving it a new paint job and putting it back together.

Parts are very hard to get for these no doubt. There's a company called Alcan that can make you leaf springs that I used and really enjoyed them. I had dana 60 rear and 44 HD out of a j20 I swapped in and after the spring over and blocks in the back I needed something that rode better and had the lift I needed for 36s. There are panels that easily accumulate dirt behind the rear quarters that I ended up making drain holes for and cleaned them out to stop rust back there. J series have their quirks but I still wish I didn't sell mine. Not much beats the sound of that 401 with 390 heads in my opinion. Don't give up.

I disagree, These are the best attributes of the J-10. I just picked up a '81 Honcho, the truck I've wanted since I was eleven years old. Mine was sitting a field for years and fires right up every time. AMC built these this way for a reason, they small and tough and run forever. You don't need 36" tires to get through the woods, just common sense and driving skills. If you want a square body, get one, then you'll be just like every classic truck owner.

They were manufactured by the Palmer Spring Co. of Providence , Rhode Island from scratch using the old springs as a pattern. This truck used to be my Dad's and is still my plow truck in winter. The pickup body was replaced with one from a 1977 Jeep ( 7'-0" length ). These old Jeeps are way tougher than any of this new generation trucks selling for $ 80,000.00 or more.

@@Ryan33T35 Hi Ryan, The Chevy frame we used on the Jeep was from a 1993 one - half ton model and it fit perfectly inside of the existing Jeep frame. We slid it in 1'-0" and cut a doubler out of a section we were not going to use to allow us to double plate the joint which was thru-bolted and welded together. All told the joint is one-half inch thick steel and has held up well all these years since the rebuild even being out in the salt for snow plowing. The gas tank we used was a 22 gallon replacement tank from Jeep which goes under the pickup bed just behind the cab. The nice thing about the Chevy frame was their bends were similar to the original Jeep frame which made our construction project much easier. I even got lucky on the purchase price - an even trade for a pickup bed mounted roll bar that came with the pickup body I bought which I was not going to use anyway. I found a 1977 pickup body in a local junkyard that was in real good shape and it fit the 1966 perfectly. Hope this information helps you with your project.

Had a 1981 jeep j10 automatic and I loved that truck but I was young and it was a snow plow truck since it was made in 81 and could t afford the repairs for it.. so I sold it to a mechanic for cheap and now I'm back in the market for one but damn they are hard to find... I really don't want any other truck.

Okay this is very interesting about your snow plow truck! I am just getting ready to go buy one. That is the same exact description. Same year everything and was a former snow plow truck. I'm buying it from an older mechanic who has to sell it as he's become a little bit ill. He's already done a bunch of work on it but he's retiring and moving into an RV. I wonder if it's the same truck you used to own???? I came onto RUclips to do some researching.

I got an 86' J20, it was shipped to west coast and came from FLA, so that road rash on the quarter panels is standard issue. I plan to graft in a new bed and patches with new metal. Carb is easy fix, had the same one on my 82' Wagoneer Limited, go to NAPA, they got a rebuild for $50 bucks. For sure the stick in your is a problem but the automatic is the way to go in an FSJ to begin with. I just got my steering column rebuilt by the Great Guys at JW Autowreckers near Sac, CA, they even had a wiring harness for my J20.
FSJ are the best trucks ever built, highly sought after, I would never trade from an import lol

I'd add that it's safe to say many trucks of the era now have rust . Gm truck beds 61 to 66 including the cab do have serious rust out . 68 to 72 chevy pickups have lots of rust issues all throughout the cabs lower structure . This J10 here looks to have been in a wet or other poor environments that has rusted much of this truck . My 72 has none of this rust as shown in this video . However the bed seam rust is a prevalent issue with Jtrucks . The wheel backspace issue is again
Due to design for a narrow track JEEP truck , not a chevy ford or dodge .

I owned from new a 1977 J10 Honcho. With 401 4bbl. Best truck I ever owned. Regret to this day not keeping it. It had a ton of room in the cab. I'm 6'2. The power was awesome. So I respectfully disagree with your assessment.

You can stop the whining. If you used it for what it was intended to do? It is a great truck. I had a j10. Now I have a j20. We use it like a tractor on our farm. It always starts and pulls like a herd of horses. I would agree. Not the most comfortable unit. But, if I want comfort? I will get in my Expedition. And, by the way. If you need to help with the fuel problem you are complaining about? Put an electric fuel pump and a predator carb. On it. Problem solved. And, there are lift kits for it. The best advice, as one poster commented. Sell it..............

The audacity to call the J10 the worst because it has rust shows you don't have knowledge about vehicles especially this one. It's a 40 year old vehicle, my dodge which is 20 years younger than this has more rust on it because it was originally living in Pennsylvania, and you can't find aftermarket parts for this truck because it's not a very common truck to come across, most are either rotting in someone's backyard, sitting in a junkyard, or maybe if you're lucky, on marketplace.

Thank you for this video, this is PRECISELY what I was looking for! Lol. I've loved the look of the J10 ever since I saw it in the movie Twister as a kid. The lifted 4x4 with the roll bar looks awesome. I'm in the market for an older truck & don't mind restoring one, but this is exactly what I needed to know. I look at old F150's & there are a million parts & they are dirt cheap. I figured the J10 would lack support & parts & this confirmed it. Maybe I'll get one some day, but this really isn't going to work for me rn.
