Some of todays best (actual) music... and on Dave Letterman to boot. Metric rocks. Thanks to whoever had the sense to record/upload this gem. Greetings from the 416
+Arik Haydn Actually i'm discovering them live after listening to them for a few years now, and it's rare, but i have to say i think i prefer the albums (Fantasies, my love
This song is so unusual yet so enthralling. It's almost defining a new genre of pop It's got tons of novel constructs like large interval jumps in the lyrics without sounding like a sound track. The single note guitar drone. So minimalistic yet powerful its effect on the mood. The nonstandard song structure etc.
First discovered this song on my Discover Weekly shit on Spotify last year. Still on my usual track rotation. I just love this song. There's just something dark and sinister and cold in this song, but at the same time, there's warmth (maybe it's the blood in the heart's pulse) and an accepting kindness to it. Hard to be soft, tough to be tender. Just like Nirvana's Love Buzz, too dirty for pop, too clean for metal. Both of them are just perfect!
@@cankhovich1796 Why is that? What about Donald Marshall? Who is he anyway? I Googled and came up with a man from Canada wrongfully accused of murder. Donald Marshall Jr.
i heard Metric for the first time, last night on Letterman and am now youtubing for more of there stuff, i might go see them when they come to Australia in October, her voice kind of reminds me of Violet Clarke from Grand Duchy
I saw them about 10 years ago at Bogarts in Cincinnati, where they opened up from The Stills. Loved Metric then and love them to this day. Emily has a great voice.
+Diego García Ríos -- True enough, but, as the other comments here prove, this was hardly a perfect performance. Emily's vocals need to be up in the mix more, for one thing. Anyway, all I know is that I find the studio version disappointing compared to this, mainly 'cause the guitar parts sound SO much better here.....
That's could be right. The point is (talking about the instrumental background) that in live versions we get to notice details that are not so obvious in studio ones because of the mix and edition.
+jeffthrow6892 Been a while since I listened to the studio version but google, "the loudness wars" which may in part explain it, i.e, every part (vocals, drums, guitars, keys, etc.) are brought up to equal volume in the mix and to nearly an extreme point that there aren't many dynamics left in the music. So it sounds decent at low to mid volumes, especially in cars, on the bus, anywhere that background noise can intrude so the natural dynamics of real music must be tamed (or so the studio practices justification goes). But the negative byproduct of these "modern" studio recording & mastering practices is that the excitement and vitality is diminished and even becomes fatiguing to listen to when played at high volumes. The studio recordings sound too processed and some of that nuanced detail disappears. Detail and dynamics that are re-emerging again in this live setting. Not to say the live mix here is perfect, btw. But it does have a raw vitality that the studio version probably lacks.
I still think that guitar part sounds cool on the album version, but it's definitely got a bit more crunch (or overdrive) and a little touch of phaser or something on this vid. Rocks it out a bit more. +kikkiokioli 's probably right as well.
bingo!---you nailed that one perfectly--it's downright frightening in fact---Just discovered this song and band after watching Defendor---gotta check out more of their stuff---she's got it goin on
Hey, somebody who finally GETS IT!! You hit the nail right on the head, I like this version better, because the guitar playing sounds better, & your damn right she looks sexy, even if she seems more reserved here than usual!!!
They have really good sound techs. Plus, they do have nightly experience with the house band. Plus they usually have talented guests, at least when I've caught the show.
This is the first time I heard Metric last summer, but I didn't know who they were because I missed the introduction, but then the song was stuck in my head all summer, then I heard the song in the vampire diaries season 1 promos, and then I googled the lyrics and found out! :D
I completely agree. Throw Blindness and Waves (always surprises me that it's a B-side) onto your list and you've got my picks. I thought for sure they'd start performing Sick Muse since they made the video.
Metric sounds like a 90's alternative/grunge band... I love them, they are great. They deserve more recognition than most of the new bands today.
I call them Canadian Radiohead. They're amazing.
Silversun Pickups also do the same but they aren't 90s
A criminally underrated song. And the lyrics just blow me away with their existential terror.
Everything that has ever happened is underrated
my bf plays this constantly lol
this is one of the best pop songs to come out in the last 15 years
James Brice 2009 had it
It's not pop though really. It's more alternative rock, alt post punkish. I'd litterally throw up if I where listening to pop lol.
No offense but I think it's a rock song. A damn good one.
its rock n rolllll
dave wanted a slice of that
Jesus ! that synth intro is so heavy! Awesome song
This is a great performance from a band who actually sounds original.

i may sound stupid........but my heart completely melts when she says "they're gonna eat me alive"......

From 2:46 to 3:18.....the guitar part just rocks, absolutely love that, why the hell doesn't the studio version have the same sound & feel to it??
+jeffthrow6892 sometimes live versions are way better than the studio ones

It was great! I was gonna watch letterman that night to catch Metric. I missed it. So Thanx for posting this. Excellent
Everytime I hear this song, especially at the bridge, I feel like this is what music is supposed to sound like. Seriously, almost all of it.

Metric is amazing. If you have the chance of seeing them live. GO!
YES!! Best live experience. They can't be captured fully in recordings.

Easily one of the best bands around today and to imagine they come from the 90s!
AMAZING!!!! and OMG Emily's face RIGHT when she finished singing...man she's an angel!
