Kim Ventura Kaplan is regionally accredited though. It's just her program that wasn't accredited. Such a situation isn't uncommon. There are a few state universities in my state that are regionally accredited, but their business programs aren't accredited by AACSB. Ultimately, it's up to the student to do their research before they take on such an expensive and time consuming process.
It sounds to me like the woman in this video didn't take out a loan to pay for the course, she took out a loan to pay for living expenses (food, gasoline etc.). Loan providers wouldn't blink before handing that out.
Aren't public colleges funded by the state tax, at least in part? Which is why in-state and out-state cost differ One of the reason I believe that colleges are not fully financed by tax is to discourage people from enrolling for a "fling" so to speak. As some major and courses are, to put it politely, not very helpful in job seeking. If something is fully funded by tax, and thus "free" to people who actually wish to take advantage of it, it will be taken advantage, in both the proper way and in all the wrong ways. By always having a personal cost, even if relatively low (public/community tuition are pretty low), people will only take what they actually believe to be useful in some ways.
The for for profit college/trade school industry has very important friends in congress. Usually if the there is a program benefiting any education or heath initiative the "for profit" sector must have a major share in the funding stream or there will be no Republican support and much opposition. Hence these diploma mills flourish.
Nurse Brooks Amen. I tell people that all the time. It’s stigmatized, which is such a shame. But it’s awesome. I wouldn’t be graduating with my bachelors this school year if I didn’t go to CC!
True! I attend community college and I'm a second year now. They've been helping a ton and gives me hopes of graduating and transferring to a nice university.
It’s crazy because you can save so much money and if you get good financial aid you can get a good paying bachelors degree with only 5k of debt or less
I worked as a recruiter for Kaplan. It’s a company whose only goal is to take as much financial aid and money from as many people as possible. After I caught on to their scam I refused to lie to people and they fired me.
@@barlowvlogs1632 I agree people should research their purchases, however it shouldn't be fully reliant on the consumer. Like if you went online and bought a couch, and it was around the same price as any other couch, but when you get it you realize it's for a doll house I'm sure you'd be annoyed. Maybe somewhere in small fine print there a disclaimer, but it is purposely hidden. Kaplan College is the same. This video was posted awhile ago, what they did is illegal now a days...at least in my state.
Ask me she should have just bought a fake degree , saved all that money there's so many FBI/ Congress People/ teacher's/state employees walking around here with fake degrees
Idk why people think college is supposed to be convenient. I left high school and went straight to college. Brick and mortar schools sit every where. I simply do not understand why people pass up cheap stayed supportef schools, to attend kapplan.
@@1911beauty I have to admit this point crossed my mind. I went to a state college in the 1990s where I got my BA. I never really knew anything about for profit schools until much later in life. I don't think I ever heard of them both in high school or after I graduated.Maybe it depends on where you live and what neighborhood you are from. Perhaps people from poor and working class neighborhoods get this info more than middle class people.
James Gretsch you can transfer to a four-year school for that and most of them especially the public universities will accept a Associate's degree as credit and in fact in a lot of states, the state run universities have to by law.
chrismc410 yes I did the same thing but I think people are implying here you can get a Bachelors at a city college which you can’t unless things have changed. But yes you do have a good suggestion to get an AA and transfer to a university for the Bachelor.
Yep! I'm at FSCJ. I really want to hurry into a career cause it seems like my friends who went to schools like this got into a career fast but they're also stuck with a $40,000 loan or more just for attending 8 months at schools like this including Concorde, Virginia College etc.
@@kiara198923 LOL...What university/school names are those? I never heard of it...if you never heard of them...do some research and verify what is their background and if they're acredited before you enroll yourself there...simple...
Some of these comments mocking her for trying to better herself are sad. She got bad advice and worked so hard trying to make a better life for her kids.
Ryan Davidson It's sad but she could have done her research. It doesn't take long to do a little digging. See what others say about the school, etc. She could have avoided this entire debacle.
That’s because they’d rather blame a careless decision over a giant unethical one. I’m not gonna act like she didn’t make a mistake, but people who make money off of taking advantage of others like this University does are the worst kind of people.
Kaplan is regionally accredited; however, there are other accreditations that are needed for certain professions. It all depends on the state you live in and Kaplan says that numerous times in the catalog and during your first 3 free trial weeks.
Devry is one of the worst out there, a government watchdog group recently sued them and prevailed in litigation, however, the settlement proceeds only applied to undergraduate programs
To the young lady that is on this video, I am so sorry this happened to you. Please don't be discouraged and follow your dream. Thank you for having the courage to make the video.👄
Chris Nicula Ask yourself why Kaplan is offering useless degrees in the first place. Students are deliberately sold a dream and therefore have little reason to believe their new degree will not further their career in any way. Meanwhile, Kaplan is offering a degree knowing that the students can’t do anything at all with it once they graduate. Who is the “bad guy” here?
@M Detlef Cooks can actually earn quite a bit of money depending on the skill set. If that was her dream, then so what? I get that you're being facetious. I just didn't want you to have too much fun.
Y’all need to go to community colleges. It accredited and you can transfer them to universities. Don’t be ashamed of community colleges. They are great. And your degree means everything.
I did that too. I have my Associate's in Criminal Justice from a community college and will be getting my Bachelor's in Crim Just next month from a online school.....wish me luck......
Good luck!! You e got this!! I started off at community college then transferred to a four year college and got my bachelors then another school to get my masters. You’ve totally got this!! 🙌🏾🙌🏾
Erika Seriously, these scamming colleges should be shut down. The government goes after predatory loans, they should go after these businesses too. I don't know how someone can even scam other people like this, or why a bank would hand out a student loan to these phony businesses.
Always find out if it’s accredited. Make sure the career path you are choosing will have a demand and pays well. Please teach your high school students this.
Just teach your student how to start businesses.... No bullshit college needed. school only teaches you how to work for others ...not how to work for self.... My Black people need to stop falling for the College gimmick
I got a MPH that is CEPH accredited from a for-profit university. They have many program certifications. It depends on the school you choose, do your research.
I think a “degree” should legally imply “accreditation”. Any higher learning institution, if not accredited, should be legally required to succinctly and clearly state that they are not accredited, and the implications of that, on a major by major basis This vital information should not be in the back of a huge student handbook filled with otherwise useless information.
That makes perfect sense to me. Unfortunately that average American is subject to many LEGAL scams during one's lifetime and this is essentially one of the most damaging.
Exactly, imagine going to Med school and you can't practice medicine or going to law school and you can't write the bar. They can call it an interest of study certificate but definitely not a degree.
David Stout Oh yes; there is a solution; get Congress on it. Maybe call the cops too. Or we can choose to not accept the rip off prices of rhese colleges. Congress is the reason free college is not so free. It allows more grants than loans and puts people in debt for many years. I think college is a wast of time for most people. The result seems to put people in debt more often than a better situation.
David Stout The Department of Education conducts audits to ensure compliance, so you can check out their progress, then write your congressman and any committee Reps if you have concerns.
Alexis Jankowski it seems I’ve seen many of the unaccredited so-called colleges like Capella and Kaplan are always bring investigated by House committees. Unaccredited so-called colleges are little more than “schools” run by scam artists and conmen.
M Detlef Amen. But it shouldn’t have to be that way. I’m 70, and back when, I picked a college from the colleges into which I was accepted ... without ever wondering about accreditation. It sad that society and education have done away with so many ‘sacred’ trusts and values. These so-called “colleges” should be labeled as lower grade trade schools, which, actually, is an insult to the real, legitimate trade schools out there.
David Stout, are you kidding?. It is the corrupt congress who allows these abominations to take place. Our government is a criminal organization in bed with corporate America. Wake up and get your head out of your arse .
nickkingofearth nope, the folks they are advertising to are too busy working cappy jobs to have time to know, and the sales people (recruiters) are very smooth and dishonest. I had a chance to look at a for profit college when I was younger and it was scary, fortunately I had enough life experience to know what i was looking at and run.
nickkingofearth I didn't know this about Heald College (another for profit college). They bedazzle you with some pretty brochures and some compelling statistics (all of which turned out to be fake of course).
it's not common knowledge. the first "college" I went to was ITT Tech. I didn't know that ITT Tech's degrees were worthless and it was $40,000 ($40k) for just an associates degree. In my understanding, I thought that, because it was $40k, it must've been a really good school considering how expensive it was and how it had people from their respective industry giving lessons there... Not only that, I didn't know that the United States allowed for businesses to make their own colleges, for profit! I thought ITT Tech was a sort of private trade school and I've always heard about how private schools usually had successful students. Not only that, I didn't know that the U.S. Government allowed giving money to for-profit colleges to when it came to student loans. (my loan was government financial aid). I saved my own ass because, just for kicks, I decided to look up reviews on ITT Tech and found a massive ton of horror stories where people graduated there but couldn't find a job because the employers considered ITT Tech degrees as a joke and these people were $40k to $80k in debt (bachelors is another $40k). I dropped out from there and didn't look back. I was very lucky considering that I was only $10k in debt let alone $40k-$80k in debt...

Kaplan is regionally accredited, but there are certain accreditations for specific careers that your university has to have for you to have that career in your state.
... Not all community colleges are accredited. The hole point of her story is that you should do your research not just assume something. Assuming makes a ass out of you and me.
The lady really worked hard as she got a grade of 3.96. Grades might not mean much but getting that amount of score is an achievement. Hope she have a better future because she's not a lazy citizen.
I went to community college but was told I would never work in my field without a Bachelor's degree. So I got duped into going to University of Phoenix. Now after $30,000 in debt, I found out my degree means nothing. I still have my Associates degree from Community college but that does not get me a job in my field. They know how to manipulate you out of your money.
Koronswagg 17 in Va all community colleges are accredited by the State and if you have a 3.0 you will be granted into 80% of public colleges and universities in Va. If the school doesn't have accreditation by the state and a physical location DONT GO
Pretty much any state school (both community colleges and actual universities) will be accredited. I mean still do your own due diligence and research, but state schools are typically the best bets to get degrees that actually have pull in real life.
Yeah, there’s nothing wrong with an associates degree, but I would’ve just transferred to a legit university. I’m weary of places like Kaplan and university of Phoenix.
Shoulders of Giants No they would not. But they are all required to clearly disclose if they are accredited. Not a footnote on page 110. Some people still choose to go there and that is fine if it is just for your own curiosity. And pricing reflects that as do the courses. Home welding, €600, 2 days instruction. Flower arrangements, €400, 2 days, not including materials. Compared to something accredited, statistical analysis, 2 years, 1130 something hours, fully accredited, €10K, not including software and computerpurchases. I did sewing because I wanted to make my own jeans but stupid me, it does not take a genius to figure out you cannot learn that in 3 days. Still got a nice introduction.
Bob Charley how so? what he said is fact. this is what the EU is openly and proudly doing. does it hurt your feelings or something? keep kidding yourself, bud.
Why isn't it the law that before a college can offer classes for a degree in anything that it must be accredited in that particular degree. This is insane. She should get all her money back plus interest plus compensation for all the hours of hard work she did. I say they owe her between $80,000 and $100,000.
SecondLifeDesigner The government will never be able to pass enough laws to protect people from their own stupidity. If you're willing to waste so much time and money pursuing a degree without bothering to do any research, you deserve everything that comes to you.
Dance Electric The degree isn't worthless. It's regionally accredited, just like every other degree from any major university. It's up to the student to decide which program is best to fill the requirements of the career they want to pursue.
Because there are more to a degree then accreditation. Especially if you wish to be self-employed in some technical skill centered field, you don't need accreditation at all, you just need the actual skill. And then some employers are nice enough to give interview to people w/o accreditation, as that does not necessarily indicate whether the person have the actual skill and knowledge. And offering accredited courses tend to cost more than offering courses w/o them, so what ends up happening is people who need the skill but not the accreditation end up paying more for what they don't actually need. There is nothing wrong, for example, for a housewife to take a few nutritionist courses to better take care of her kids, without ever planning to seek a job in the field. Why should she pay for the bureaucratic overhead because some other people are incapable of doing proper research? Now, I do agree SOME courses should require accreditation. Say serious medical studies. But then we get into the murky water of who decide which courses needs it. So in practice, it's unlikely to be a thing. Edit: to be clear, I have been a victim of poor research myself. So I can sympathize with the confusion of researching school subject matter. It's a bit of a complicated story so I won't go there. But still, the "masses" should not be punished for the mistake of the few.
So with Dietetics/Nutritional sciences it's pretty clearly spelled out(hi this is my field) that you have to go through an accredited school to become an RDN or registered dietitian nutritionist. Once you do that you have to do an ACEND accredited internship and then pass an exam to become an RDN and receive your license to practice. That's generally how to do it nationally, state registration and legislation varies from State to state. Because dietetics is constantly evolving they want all dietitians to have the same knowledge base but it's a four year program so how do you do that? You make the schools be accredited by the people who certify the practicioners. So why isn't this law? Well if you've taken a chemistry course in college chances are you heard about the American chemical society and you took their test at the end of the semester. Well that's kinda like common core for colleges. The colleges go to board and say "you know about this shit how do we level this playing field?" So then the colleges and ACS or what have you work together to make the curriculum so everyone has the same basic chemistry knowledge to go towards higher education. It's not a law because it's something the college sets up with a notable agency. And schools don't have to teach based on these standards because it's higher education.
Research research research. Speak to the field you want to go into, take careers advice. Out of 40 on my course not one of us is working in that field and i am no further forward than school drop outs
sad but true most college grads don't end up working in the field they went to school for. most companies just want a degree and don't care what it's in.
I get that its important to encourage people to research, but you gotta realize these groups are shady, stocked full of salespeople, and will lie if they can get away with it. What we really need is a government that stands up to this, and given trump u being one of these bs “colleges” i doubt it.
Hell, this is all the research I need to do. This confirms what I always believed. All these little universities that pop up on commercials during the day and pop up on your computer while you're working on the internet or just trying to steal your money. It's not real. I knew they were Crooks all along. I figured as much. I feel so bad. My stomach keeps dropping the more she speaks.

Disagree. I make the same if not more than people with my degree I got at a community college then those from a university. People are paying for "the college experience". Total rip offs
I would make it my mission in life to stand outside the classrooms if I were her of the the Freshman and Sophomores giving out flyers saying that their degrees will not be accredited. Sad situation, but I don't know how you don't research this kind of thing beforehand. I started with community college, got a couple years down there before transferring to WGU, which is 100% online. Before signing up with them, I verified that they were nationally and regionally accredited, because I knew otherwise it was a waste of time and money. I think I spent maybe 30 mins researching online college in general and found that the accreditation is the biggest factor in that market.
jw11432 how many high school graduates were never taught or just completely forget what accredited means. If you don't know it's a thing, how can you look for it.
Kudos to her for her self-discipline, grit, hard work and determination. I hope things work out for her . That being said, schools like these should be closed down
I went to Kaplan for a month, the first 30 days was like a "trial" based thing. The moment the first month was over the pace had changed in teaching and I went with my gut and quit the school. I went on to join the Navy instead, which made me regret going to Kaplan in the first place. That school is a scam.
Before I entered Ashford University, I made certain my degree and courses were credited. Temple University accepted 90% of the credits and I was happy. Research Research Research!!
What is the point of a college that isn't accredited? What service do they think they're selling people? I would be embarrassed to tell people that I was a professor at Kaplan because it's just another way of saying that I'm completely useless.
Owen Brady Kaplan is regionally accredited, just like every other major university. Some licensing boards require you to attend programs that are accreditated by industry-specific bodies. Kaplan's nutrition program didn't meet this criteria. The degree isn't completely worthless, though it was significantly overpriced. The regional accreditation allows her to take it to any university and apply for graduate school, something she'd have to do for a career in nutrition anyway.
Dance Electric Unfortunately, the US government will give a student loan to anyone. She'll still eligible for loans to go to grad school as long as she stays current on her current loans. Hopefully she puts more thought and research into her future endeavors.
I think most schools, any except the most prominent, would probational accept an in-state student w/ a non-accredited degree. Because if, despite the lack of credits, the student can actually perform, it's all fine and dandy. If not, they can always kick the student out after the first semester or year. Thou even for the probational acceptation, they are usually required to get some recommendation letter and maybe take some test to get in, so a bit more hoops than regular students. I mean I got probational acceptance into my masters with shit grades from my undergrad study (accredited thou), just had to jump a few hoops. I'm sure a good grade in unaccredited will have more or less the same pull, as long as it's not a literally bought diploma. I'm sure that most school are aware of Kaplan's situation, in that it's not a complete scam in that they actually teach something despite all its other faults.
Just Anoman On the contrary, her degree is accredited by the southern regional accrediting authority. Her particular program isn't accredited by the national authority that accredits nutritional programs. To get into grad school, they only require that the undergrad degree come from a university that is regionally accredited at the time you attended.
That’s the thing with accreditations. I went to ITT a decade ago and that was my first question and they said yes “ we are accredited “ but what I didn’t know was they were Nationally accredited, not regionally. What kind of crap is that. They technically didn’t lie, it’s just that National accreditation means nothing, I am so mad
I agree that these institutions are predatory and unethical, but WHY do people not research their career paths ahead of time?! Such an expensive mistake to make.
It's not a random dude that can trick you by hidding from the law and get money out of you and then disappear. It's an OFFICIAL fraud that is going on and govertment allowes it.Laws suppose to protect people from these kind of shit because not all people can protect themselves.
Bingo. Every time I hear how someone was sold on this... that is the question which I ask. You have a great program... fine. Takes about five minutes to look up Department of Labor statistics, five more to look up pay scales, another five minutes to look up various groups dealing with nutrition education and ask what they think about it, an couple of days to send emails to some nutritionists or companies which deal with nutrition. And of course you can simply ask the college for things such as graduation rates, lists of former graduates as references, student/alumni societies, companies who recruit at their campuses, etc., etc. And of course... does any real degree good for actual jobs come online? How are you possibly going to learn about nutrition without serious chemistry and biology classes? With real labs? Seeing actual people?
When I was in nursing school, our class found out that those who went to Grand Canyon did not qualify to enter the program because the school was not accredited. Just go to a community college. It's cheaper and easy to get into.
This is an untrue statement. Grand Canyon was disciplined for its students falling below taking the nursing exam 2 years in a row. They got the lowest firm of discipline, which is a warning to get their act straight. They did, indeed, so just that. GCU is now expanding its nursing program and they have been renewed for academic accreditation (which they were never in jeopardy with) as of last year. Matter of fact, most of their programs have gone under huge renovations to exceed the demands of accreditation. For your reading pleasure... www.azcentral.com/story/news/local/phoenix/2017/04/09/grand-canyon-universitys-rn-program-disciplined-state-nursing-board/99695092/
Here's a suggestion--gather up all your coursework, papers you wrote, exams, and especially course syllabi. Find an accredited state school with a degree-granting nutrition program in your area. Make an appt with the faculty member who serves as the Director of Undergraduate Studies, which you can probably find online. See what they are willing to do for you. Be sure to emphasize your academic achievement. You may be able to transfer some or all of the Kaplan coursework. There will probably be some additional coursework, but you've come this far . . . Despite this setback, you'll finish with a REAL degree from a REAL school. Good luck.
I went to a shitty for profit university for my associates degree and was on the deans list and when I tried to go to a real university to get my bachelors they said I would basically have to test out of the lower level classes but I would still have to make the credits up so it would be doing a full four year program all over again.
Stick to the public, instate colleges and universities. Even a community college that has a curriculum which allows transfer into the public, state school, is better than this mess. Also, before matriculating, ensure the institution has a regional accreditation.
texan903, yah that's true. However, I think Ivy Leagues and Private Schools (Stanford, Johns Hopkins, and schools like that) are not necessarily better than what you mentioned earlier. For instance, if I was in Texas like you, what I would do is go to a Community College for 2 years, then transfer to either UT Austin, UT Dallas or some other UT school or Texas A&M.
Ivies and private universities are for those who are part of the elite, want an education to help maintain their contacts and gain career security. The students who attend those schools are usually from legacy families, and those who have donated significant funds. Outside of that, those schools offer those from the lower and middle classes the opportunity to elevate themselves to upper middle class and even a pathway to the elite.

It's always a good idea if you talk to REAL people who have gone to the school and/or are working in the field ( NOT the testimonial students the school provides)
I looked into Kaplan recently and quickly determined that the school was not worth it. When you go to their main page you can't even find information on their degree programs. You have to submit yourselves to their enrollment advisors who do the hard sell.
That's how I know they're just trying to sell to make money, not for teaching. I do the same for corporations (sometimes I have to source parts). If they don't have information on their website, and instead they say to contact them for the information (or sign up with email, etc..), I leave. No business for you! :)
Just be careful there are a lot of for-profit institutions like Kaplan. Make sure where ever you go, the program is nationally accreddited. I'm transferring into engineering school, and most employers won't take degrees from non-ABET accredited schools. Some of these schools are Devry, Globe, Everest, ITT tech... Ect. Any public tech school will offer these degrees for much cheaper. They also love to prey on vetrerans for their GI bills.
This is such a sad story, all that work for no return and then left with a huge student loan, I feel her pain, when she said that she can't get those years back. The university should be prosecuted for their misguidance.
It is so true!! They told me to make a portfolio to bring to my interviews, and the employers didn't even want or need to see my degree and achievements. Pretty crazy eh?
I think she could always use her unaccredited nutrition degree along with her food service experience to sit for the CDM exam and gain a certificate as a dietary manager and work in nursing homes making $45,000 to $60,000 annually.🤔
Very good point ! All accredited schools are in for big money too. Just look at their football programs. And how they arrange the classes so that it will take you longer to graduate.
Ashton Christopher you probably work a shitty job for shitty pay and might get to retire 10 years before you die if you’re lucky. How “logical” is that?
Mandalorian Gaming: Because they advertised as a full and accredited college that would supply students with degrees. Its false advertising to an extent, so Bro might be right.
It's all based on terms of agreement. It's like that dude that advertised donation to Trump, people donated 20 Million dollars. But the money was for him, not Trump. Then legal experts looked into the terms of agreement, found out he specifically says that none of the donations are for the Trump campaign. All the money was donated to the individual. So legally can't do nothing because Terms of Agreement are a base of Contract. Similar it's Facebook apps, it specifically says it will collect all of your data. From contacts, to Google search, to your text message. It's the price of using the app, ones accepted, even if you delete the apps. They still will collect and analyse all of your life.
Yeah and then the blood sucking lawyers finish you off... they'll make Kaplan debt look like small peanuts. Everybody thinks lawyers are on your side, news flash: *THEY'RE NOT!* Lawyers are some of the most low down pos scammers, I hate lawyers. I celebrate when a lawyer gets his or her ass kicked by a client.
As a former college counselor, there should be a POSTED warning just like the Surgeon General's warning on tobacco products as regards non-accredited degrees & the schools which offer said regarding their, lack of, marketability, acceptance by employers and graduate schools, and their zero credibility for entrance into certified professional work fields. I believe gov't educational agencies on the state & federal level should warn the public & potential students as to the full nature, character, and consequences of unaccredited programs. If we warn/inform people as to health hazards and require organizations to post dietary content info, California Proposition warnings, etc. we should do the same with regards to these "hustler" schools. They should "upfront" communicate the lack of accrediation & what that can actually mean.
That is waaaaaayyyyy wrong and such a disservice to students. Students put in time, effort, and money in the hopes of a better future, life, or job prospect. They should not be steered in such a direction. I hope you weren't a casualty of such advice.
EarlFaulk OK?... I'm on my phone and wasn't speaking to you. I wasn't making fun of the job. I was making fun of the person who is anonymous and says they're a former college counselor like strangers will take them for the word or it makes more qualified
Kaplan is regionally accredited. That is why she got student loans. The dietitian program doesn’t have the separate accreditation required for licensure.
I truly feel for her and I cannot imagine being in her shoes. However, it is the responsibility of the student to look at employers that actually will hire you and ask about accreditation after all the job is the end goal. Blindly choosing a program without proper research is negligence. Go to public colleges and universities folks. There is something very shady of schools getting 90% revenue from the government and considering themselves as a private for profit. Screams scam more than a job offer on Craigslist without an interview.
It shouldn't be the responsibility of the students. It should be the responsibility of the state. Kaplan knows it's misleading people. Why the hell would an institution offer a program that is not accredited? What's the point otherwise? Why would someone want a degree from a program that is not accredited? For fun? Yeah, right. Their business model is to simply mislead vulnerable people. They can create the perception of value (e.g., improved career and lifestyle, flexible schedule) without the cost of accreditation. There is no point to offering a degree that is not accredited. They should be forced to advertise their program as non-accredited.
It is a student's responsibility. You don't jump into a major and career without serious research. If you go to eat right.org it tells you which colleges are accredited for nutrition and dietetics.
jrs89 They do advertise that the program is not accredited. It's right next to the list of required courses for the program in the course catalog.... They even showed it in the video.
I just graduated from local community college with a 2 year tech degree and I'm making almost TWICE as much as I did with my previous bachelors degree.
But don't you think it's because of your Bachelor's Degree that your employer wanted to take a chance on you? Try not listing your degree (related or not) and getting a similar tech job. Then see how long it takes to get a call back.
Keisha Jones I paid $100,000 for a bachelors in design. Made $14/hour until I got an AA in nursing at a community college. I know it’s not the same as the other person’s tech example, but it does happen. The highest paying nursing jobs (hospital) didn’t require my bachelors.
I feel really bad for this woman because clearly her intentions were good. But it sounds as though she didn’t do her research beforehand. If you’re seeking a career change that ultimately requires some sort of certification or licensure, you need to contact the regulatory body and get a list of accredited programs/schools and confirm that your school is in fact going to put you on the right path. It is hard with all these online degree mills that make their programs sound awesome, but they are FOR PROFIT! They’re selling a product just like anything else. Buyer beware.
I was doing Kaplan and they straight up told me that with want I wanted to do I'd have to look into what else I'd need for teaching in my state.I could get the core classes done and even the other classes needed, but there'd be more offline stuff for Public school teaching. I didn't finish school at the time BUT I did learn a lot.
Lemon Lindsay Exactly right. If she was so passionate about the field she was entering, she would have done her researched and learned that the degree wouldn't have helped her. This is a typical case of "buyer's remorse" and she is not taking ownership of her own poor decision. Not only that, but it looks like she's a single mom with two kids (judging from the picture the photo at 3:47) so I don't really feel sorry for her being in debt. You're supposed to get your education BEFORE you have kids.
What if a woman's husband abandons her? Or dies or gets disabled? Sometimes people have situations where they find themselves needing to start over or change gears after kids are born. We should not be down on her because she wanted better. If it was a man you wouldn't say such a thing.
_ _ If it was a man you wouldn't say that about the kids. Nice way to put down a woman who was trying to do right and better. You don't know if she needed to get away from an abuser, or if the father abandoned the family or is dead or disabled - maybe she expected to be a stay at home and it didn't work. I know two women who ended up at school after kids were born. One father died, one father came home from the military and was really messed up and unable to work or cope. Life is crap at times and we have to do what we can as is.
Caitlin Broza no one here is saying that it's bad of her to want better I did that's why I originally was looking and researching and decide to do online college now. Later I ended up not being able to go through this to go back to school but what I learned was valuable. The thing is I want to go back to Kaplan or whatever it's called now even if I could because they don't do my degree anymore rules changed and so they don't do my degree anymore. Because I decided to go to Kaplan originally I did a lot of research on what they needed for their degree but they had to do surgery I wanted how good it would be afterwards would I be able to get my actual teaching certificate which by the way the answer is no online you can't because it's by State so it wouldn't work anyways but I would be able to get the base degree in childhood development at that time. I did a lot of research not just on Kaplan but I'm many different schools. I like that good and bad reviews I like that how they handed financial aid how they handled learning disability Aid. I put in a lot of research before choosing. That's why I even though it didn't work out and the degree in dip changing after I'd left and things changed I still don't regret going. To me from what I was able to gather and they said she didn't do extensive research before choosing the school and if this was a guy I would say the exact same thing when you are going for higher education if you're going to go for it whether you're going to an actual School private or state or online you should do extensive research religious private school. School is whether they are state or private or online they are all in reality for profit if you have to pay for it they are making a profit in some way shape or form you should always do your research that's funny when I tried to do it online I did extensive research this time. I will restate for one more time that if this person was a male my answers would be exactly the same. Also I'm sorry if there's any spelling errors my tablet kind of sucks
In 2019 I was in hospital. They had a lot of student nurses doing rounds with staff RNs. A commercial for another of these for-profit paper mill nursing schools aired on TV during one of their visits to my room. I had noticed that all of the student nurses wore tunics with their school logos -- five accredited four-year university programs plus one community college program. I asked the RN if any for-profit colleges sent their students to their hospital. She said that they never accommodated for-profit college nursing programs at the hospital because most of those students are so badly trained that they were likely to kill patients from sheer incompetence. Then I went to a rehab center and the ONLY student nurses walking the halls there were from for-profit schools.
If you've never enrolled in school before, you aren't gonna know to make sure it's accredited or not.. I hope she has overcome this problem within the past 5 years .. When I was barely an adult at 18, i enrolled into Aveda Institute.. 15k in debt for hair and makeup school. Hopefully her story will help someone. 🙏🏾
im glad i saw this video bc i was about to register to go to Kaplan University this january i am not going now thank you for this video im sorry this happen to you i am in debts with other colleges but i would have been in even more debt by going to this school
My mom got a “degree” from Phoenix despite me warning her. When she started applying for jobs, basically every single employer told her that her degree was worthless and they get a lot of applications from people with for-profit degrees and whenever they have hired someone with a for-profit degree, it never works out because the person had no idea what they’re doing because they didn’t even get the right education for their fake degree. Do my mom, she qualifies for disability so she was able to get her student loan debt from it all forgiven, but I can’t even imagine how devastating it would be for someone young and desperate like this woman. Community college or trade school is your best bet. It’s not possible for a lot of people to attend classes because they have to work, but I think more colleges are offering night classes and online classes because of this.
nicole davis they aren’t accredited by the institutions that matter. If your s hook isn’t regionally accredited and the degree isn’t accredited by the leading body then you e wanted your money
@@mssha1980 University of Phoenix has been regionally accredited since the 1970s. That's the same accreditation that public universities and most private American universities have.
So fucking easy to armchair judge shit with common 2018 knowledge as though you'd never make this kind of mistake. My wife got an online degree and they said they would get accredited and then didn't. Then they got sued but we never saw any of that money. It's not always black and white. This was back in 2010 and we still owe 6 figures for that shit. Easy to judge it when you don't go through it yourself.
While, I agree she went to a scam university, getting a degree will not get you a job alone. You have to build your resume while you are in college, LinkedIn and network in your area you are going into. Volunteer and look for opportunities to get WORK experience. With the right type of experience, a degree is really just a check in the box for an employer. Also her "degree" is not entirely worthless. It might be for being a nurse, but not other supervisor jobs and positions, which require a bachelors degree (accredited or not).
Government closed down last Cordon Bleu because the people who graduated were in debts of 50k and up. the people I know who graduated from there told me it was worthless and you'll be in major debt by the time you are done so I went to a community college instead for the program I wanted to go for.
I'm a community college professor, and this woman's story just kills me. She put in the time and effort and way more than the financial cost necessary for a degree, only to find herself in this pitiable situation. Anytime one of my students tells me they're leaving our school to take a quick 2-year to 10-month program or any other completely online prog with a for-profit school, I try to counsel them. Unfortunately, the predatory nature of these institutions indoctrinate students by convincing them that they are making the best decision even if others disagree--sometimes even preparing them with rebuttals. It's so important that states invest in their community colleges to offer more distance education and online education. I'm lucky my state does. Had this woman chosen to attend/had access to a community college DE prog, she would have been ready to transfer to a 4-yr at the time she found out her degree was not accredited, and might be in a grad prog by now--I see the drive in her that could have achieved that. My advice to anyone considering a for profit education is to go to a community college first, but also to consider the program being offered logically--in nutrition for example, if every accredited institution in the country requires practical labs in their nutrition program, why would this totally online program, in less time, be equivalent?
A couple of years ago I was taking art at a community college, and found out about a state scholarship for veterans. I applied hoping for a little money for art supplies. I didn't understand the full program until I got a letter stating that I was eligible to attend any state school for my masters. I had to call the state education office and ask if it was real because it was an amazing letter to receive. I am in graduate school (as an older online student) and I can understand how hard it is to get informed on all of the credentials, licensing, internships - I can understand how a young woman expecting a college to be legitimate and having her best interest at heart could be duped. My scholarship is limited to state university only so I am fortunate in that sense otherwise I may have been duped too. Things have changed a lot and I hope that this young woman can figure it out. It is a lot of debt for nothing and this isn't the America I grew up in.
You know there are jobs in between waiting tables and getting an advanced degree. Like working in a bank, insurance company, sales rep, hospitals, plumbers, electricians, etc. Not everyone can go to college or should go to college. This is a myth.
Maybe a non-accredited school shouldn’t be allowed to exist in the first place. It is logical to conclude that a school you’re paying $40,000 for is an accredited university, especially if you’ve been led to believe so. You’re blaming her for this- when the real issue or for-profit universities exploiting and taking advantage of innocent, blue-collar workers like her.
Accreditation isn't what it used to be. Corinthian and ITT were accredited. Many highly "reputable" accreditors are pay to play and would accredit a ham sandwich ie. Corinthian and ITT.
Actually, many veterans go to these schools. Not to mention working class individuals with families who are just trying to make a better life for themselves.
Basically yes, also losers, desperate single Mom's, recovering substance abusers, ....really anyone that missed the boat the first couple of times and now is looking for a "quick fix" for their life.
Student loans shouldn't be allowed for unaccredited schools.
Kim Ventura i agree with you
Aren't public colleges funded by the state tax, at least in part? Which is why in-state and out-state cost differ
One of the reason I believe that colleges are not fully financed by tax is to discourage people from enrolling for a "fling" so to speak.
Here's a hint: if the "university" runs ads during Maury or The Price Is Right, it's a scam
That used to be a good way to tell but now legitimate schools like Arizona state and John Hopkins have online programs and run TV ads.
Jasmine Spicer Their degrees nowadays are just as worth as the for profit ones

It’s crazy because you can save so much money and if you get good financial aid you can get a good paying bachelors degree with only 5k of debt or less
I worked as a recruiter for Kaplan. It’s a company whose only goal is to take as much financial aid and money from as many people as possible. After I caught on to their scam I refused to lie to people and they fired me.

Make sure the school is Regionally accredited, It's time to start suing these online universities for false advertising and deception.
The school doesn't necessarily have to be regionally accredited, but it helps at times like this for sure.
Kaplan is regionally accredited; however, there are other accreditations that are needed for certain professions. It all depends on the state you live in and Kaplan says that numerous times in the catalog and during your first 3 free trial weeks.

There should be a disclaimer about that
@Longster86 Maybe better educate people so they know enough to avoid them.
I think a “degree” should legally imply “accreditation”. Any higher learning institution, if not accredited, should be legally required to succinctly and clearly state that they are not accredited, and the implications of that, on a major by major basis
This vital information should not be in the back of a huge student handbook filled with otherwise useless information.
Daniel - I think our points align to some degree with each other.
All of these fly-by-night so/called colleges need to be investigated by Congress and put out of business.
David Stout
Oh yes; there is a solution; get Congress on it.
Unaccredited

M Detlef Amen. But it shouldn’t have to be that way. I’m 70, and back when, I picked a college from the colleges into which I was accepted ... without ever wondering about accreditation. It sad that society and education have done away with so many ‘sacred’ trusts and values. These so-called “colleges” should be labeled as lower grade trade schools, which, actually, is an insult to the real, legitimate trade schools out there.

it's not common knowledge. the first "college" I went to was ITT Tech.
A useless degree and an insurmountable debt to boot. - if this isn't a catastrophe that sets one back for life, I don't know what is.

@@JimmyStruthers1000 I am a 70-year old Singaporean. Some 40 years ago, I worked for 10 years to save $10K - only to spend it all for a 4-year BA Hons at the Singapore University. In contrast, 2 of my non-graduate colleagues invested in several properties. The Singapore economy was then taking off! Over their life time they made several millions from properties they bought and sold! Some years after my graduation, I bought my first property but by then property prices have shot up several hundred percents - believe me, I struggled to pay off that 1st mortgage!
I’m glad ppl are talking about this subject
But when are people going to talk about 4 year universities that are just as useless and cost 10x as much?
I got a MPH that is CEPH accredited from a for-profit university. They have many program certifications. It depends on the school you choose, do your research.

how is Kaplan even a school if they offer degrees that aren't accredited.. doesn't that mean you can't even call it a degree.
Kaplan buys schools for thier accreds then "rides them out" so they don't have to go thru effort themselves.
Kaplan is regionally accredited, but there are certain accreditations for specific careers that your university has to have for you to have that career in your state.
As a Kaplan student I can tell you that you have no idea what your talking about. That's not how a school gets accreditations.

I went to community college but was told I would never work in my field without a Bachelor's degree. So I got duped into going to University of Phoenix. Now after $30,000 in debt, I found out my degree means nothing. I still have my Associates degree from Community college but that does not get me a job in my field.

No they would not.
Dance Electric She wasn't ripped off. She got received everything she paid for.
The government should shut them down. A freeze all the accounts and pay the people back at los all that money.
These schools sleep with the government. They are safe. The government does not care about the people.

Knowledge.
I feel so bad for her. Accreditation is the first thing we should ask about a school.
Agreed, I have 4 degrees and can't earn enough to be sane. I don't blame anyone but myself. I should have known better.

IMHO, if they don't plan ahead first, maybe they shouldn't be going to college to begin with. XD
E. Null CC nursing programs are easy to get into? Liar
Good luck.
Larry B this isa great suggestion

Yeah if what she learned was at least relevant she may be able to take a challenge exam for courses.
I went to a shitty for profit university for my associates degree and was on the deans list and when I tried to go to a real university to get my bachelors they said I would basically have to test out of the lower level classes but I would still have to make the credits up so it would be doing a full four year program all over again.
Community College or state schools have online courses. Sorry this happened to the victims.
Stick to the public, instate colleges and universities. Even a community college that has a curriculum which allows transfer into the public, state school, is better than this mess. Also, before matriculating, ensure the institution has a regional accreditation.
texan903 agreed that is the way most people should go, unless if they are from a rich family that can afford Private schools and ivy leagues
Someone in this lady's predicament would most likely take out excessive loans for a private or Ivy League education.
texan903, yah that's true.

THIS CALLS FOR A LAWSUIT!
Bro she can’t sue
Why? Because she's too dumb to know how college accreditation works.
Everybody thinks lawyers are on your side, news flash: *THEY'RE NOT!*
Lawyers are some of the most low down pos scammers, I hate lawyers.
BlackandTan1950 I wish you worked at my high school, my high school counselor actually recommend these schools to the students.
That is waaaaaayyyyy wrong and such a disservice to students. Students put in time, effort, and money in the hopes of a better future, life, or job prospect. They should not be steered in such a direction. I hope you weren't a casualty of such advice.
That counselor probably worked for them at one point......its very easy for the employees of fraudulent diploma mills to justify what they are doing.
BlackandTan1950 AS A FORMER COLLEGE COUNSELOR 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
EarlFaulk OK?... I'm on my phone and wasn't speaking to you. I wasn't making fun of the job. I was making fun of the person who is anonymous and says they're a former college counselor like strangers will take them for the word or it makes more qualified
I thought the whole accrediting part of a university is tied to financial aide. How did she get financial aide to go to an unaccredited school?
aid not aide.
I believe there are bank loans given out for these types of things as well, government may not give you a loan but a bank will
It's not that the school is non accredited. It's that they offer programs that are not accredited by the governing body. Please note the difference
Schools need to be upfront about this shit. If your degree is not accredited, the school needs to be clear about that UPFRONT.
Its cause you made a smart decision to do something reasonable unlike other people
Please tell us please
Stephanie C exactly. I say the same thing. Take that same 2 year tech degree without that bachelors and see who picks you up and for how much
Keisha Jones I paid $100,000 for a bachelors in design. Made $14/hour until I got an AA in nursing at a community college. I know it’s not the same as the other person’s tech example, but it does happen. The highest paying nursing jobs (hospital) didn’t require my bachelors.
She will never owen a home, until she pays off that loan. she will probably die and still owe on it.
Maybe the school should not scam people?
U can get a house with student loans, you just can't be in default
MG - now that was funny ... long winded but funny - and i wish i could remember the name of the movie
dm8867 ☹️😭
dm8867 No, I got my first home with $30k in student loan debt.
Accreditation itself is a scam. If she actually learned something, then it is education and should hold value.
JC Sunderland you made the most logical sense of all comments I love you whoever you are
JC Sunderland but she can’t work as a dietitian legally
These diploma Mills need to be eradicated.
Erick Nava Idiot DeVos just reinstated them.
okay, so they're even worse than a diploma mill in that case.
That's "school" should have to pay for her student loans...
Rule of thumb 👍: if they have to sell you " to get you in a program it's probably a scam. Community colleges don't do that
In 2019 I was in hospital.
This sounds like a lie, I went to a for profit school and did my clinicals at a Veterans Affair hospital and multiple hospitals around my area..
A single mother, no male guidance, filled with "you go gurl"-power. She was a sitting duck for someone with the name of Kaplan.
Booooo. This can destroy lives. No way the feds should give loans to unaccredited schools. This lady deserves an honorary degree. 😡😡😡
Not true at all. I made sure my school was accredited.
I know how she feels. I went to a culinary academy. 40k in debt and it also meant absolutely nothing.
I am still crying. Kaplan did me the same way. I am $88,00 in debt because of the lie they sold me.
Same I’m 60K in debt for the past 6 years
im glad i saw this video bc i was about to register to go to Kaplan University this january i am not going now thank you for this video im sorry this happen to you i am in debts with other colleges but i would have been in even more debt by going to this school
Big mistake!
TheBachelorette10 Good thing you found this video. So many schools out there prey on innocent people. It's so unethical and wrong.
TheBachelorette10 I almost went to that school myself. Im glad that I didn't
Go to community college super cheap, accredited and usually has connection with local community.
TheBachelorette10 I hope you're attending a community college now
My parents taught us to never get anything you can't pay for. I received my law degree at 35 years old because I saved and paid for it.
They are accredited.
nicole davis they aren’t accredited by the institutions that matter. If your s hook isn’t regionally accredited and the degree isn’t accredited by the leading body then you e wanted your money
The sad part is when you tell people about these schools they don’t listen
I attend the nations first community college established in 1901
@@mssha1980 University of Phoenix has been regionally accredited since the 1970s. That's the same accreditation that public universities and most private American universities have.
I thought it was common sense that if you see an online college on tv, then it's probably bull shit lol.
Acid Plug most are accredited this college is a scam
But the black guy who screams at me on t.v. about everest seems so legit
Our educational is all about business not learning
When choosing online education, always go with a state university. I wish the best for her and her family.
How much did it cost you?
julio alferez i went to culinary school at community college. Was a year course for the certificate at 800 a quarter
Yup my friend went there hes fucked lol
It’s not about you gaining a productive life and moving forward. It’s about stealing as much of your hard earned money as they can!
It is a lot of debt for nothing and this isn't the America I grew up in.
wow this is horrible
You know there are jobs in between waiting tables and getting an advanced degree. Like working in a bank, insurance company, sales rep, hospitals, plumbers, electricians, etc. Not everyone can go to college or should go to college. This is a myth.
Nancy Desch most of these jobs you need experience.. ive been trying to get out of retail but nothing
"I am a logical person". Doesn't check for accreditation.
Lol gotcha. Logical yet succumbed to drinking and gained weight. Logical yet sacrificed so much time for no payoff. Whoopsy
Both of you commenters need to go to therapy and work out your anti-emotion insecurities
Lol i was scrolling and this made me laugh
She didn't research the school before! Big mistake...
These schools make $ off party chicks.
And single moms
Actually, many veterans go to these schools. Not to mention working class individuals with families who are just trying to make a better life for themselves.
Basically yes, also losers, desperate single Mom's, recovering substance abusers, ....really anyone that missed the boat the first couple of times and now is looking for a "quick fix" for their life.
Ironic the advertisement before was for a for-profit university 😂
LOL noticed the same thing.
It was done on purpose as irony lol
All the recruiters have degrees from actual universities
You must realize schools are businesses
