+EDDsp2009 He's had issues with drug addiction and depression before. He says he still struggles with his mental state, and with drugs sometimes. Once an addict - always an addict. And if you've dealt with depression before you're likely to do it again.
stoopiDOH Yeah, that's pretty sad. The energy that he takes out of all of this is great, though. He transforms it all into amazing music, and I really hope it makes him feel better. Thanks for the answer.
The way he smiles when he sings "you in your skinny jeans, anyway" makes my heart break because I feel like he's actually remembering vividly her and her skinny jeans, kind of melancholic.
Imperfect and flawed? Not really. Maybe in some ways but that's what makes it great. Perfection is unattainable; why go looking for it when you won't find it? Take heart in the small beautiful things.
every time I listen to The 1975 , it's sounds so New for me but I already listen it for 2 years , it's so weird because a band like the 1975 give me that feel, I dont know I just can't stop listen to it
He has these little smiles and then when he says "she's got a boyfriend anyway" it looks like he's about to cry. Really powerful song/performance. I've listened to this 6 times in a row already.
I definitely got the wrong idea about this song when I first listened to it so here's what I think is an accurate interpretation of the lyrics just FYI: Matt is singing about a guy who longs for something more than just a sexual relationship with this girl. Ironically, all they "seem to do is talk about sex." At the end of the song, it truly begins to express how frustrated he is that he couldn't feel anything with her. "They've all got back combs anyway, you've all got boyfriends anyway" -- all of these girls are the same to him, and he's still looking for something different; something deeper than sex.
Ingrid Schmidt actually i think it does.. he asks can he fill his shoes, ie can i be your boyfriend instead of him? but she said no. she just wants him for sex and is happier with her boyfriend.. in fact whether or not she actually has a boyfriend or not is irrelevant, she obviously doesn't see the narrator as boyfriend material, she's sees herself with someone else in the long term and he's sad about that...
I don't understand the hate that is addressed to this song. He doesn't necessarily want to have just sex with the girl, he wants more - a relationship, actual feelings, "but she's got a boyfriend anyway," and "all we can talk about is sex." I can relate to the situation so much in a unique way, and it happens more than most people think. From the clarity, and emotion in his voice to the guitar playing itself this acoustic version is fantastic.
Haha that's a beautiful sentiment but if you look up the interview he did at Melt festival, it's definitely about wanting to have sex. The "and you're making your way down... and I'm not trying to stop you, love. If we're going to do anything we might as well just fuck" is about him at the end of his tether, wanting to do more than just fool around, but the girl is being indecisive because she's got boyfriend/doesn't want to go that far yet. Of course, he may want more from the girl too, but the song itself is about sex. You're being seduced by his beautiful acoustic rendition, making this song so wonderfully poetic and romantic. Which, of course, I can't blame you. He seduces us all easily.
I always come back to this performance of matty singing 'sex', because the way he furrows his eyebrows while singing, the way he puts so much emotion into his voice and just the way he makes the song come alive gives me goosebumps everywhere. This performance is gold!
I never realized how beautiful this song could be! I love the original and never would have imagined it done this way but this arrangement is wonderful. Perfection! Here I go to listen to it again
My all time favourite song.. When I first heard it I thought that it literally was just a song about sex, but then I quickly realised that it actually has so much meaning and emotion behind it, and watching the acoustic versions just confirms that.. Beautiful.
Agreed. He is amazing and very intelligent. He will be okay. But songs like this make me want to just give him a hug and wrap him in a blanket with tea.
This is my favourite version of the song. It's just so relatable for me, his tone, the lyrics, and the sound coming from his guitar. It's so melancholic and so much of a contrast of the album version. I'm glad I found this band.
Listen I’m a big Swiftie but I’ve also been a fan of The 1975 since 2013 and this exact version of this song will ALWAYS be my absolute favorite. And I get it Taylor. I get it.
He always looks so sad when he sings this song, and I think this is not an obvious consideration because he could sing it in many different ways but he always chooses the most heartbreaking. This really means a lot to him
He looks so sad everytime he sings to this song. It means so much to him. It is so clear the meaning behind the lyrics, like he was so in love with a girl and maybe they sexted but for her it was just fun and he was just falling more and more for her. And she was taken, and he wanted her so badly that it broke him. And maybe, he asked her to sleep together, "to fill his shoes" and she said no. She said no. And it made him feel worse, because he knew that she was just playing with him and she still choose her boyfriend over Matty. And so, he wrote this song for her. (Sorry for my head-cannon but I feel so connected to this song, because I've been there, in the place were Matty is)
I know alot of people don't like Matty because of the way that he doesn't care what anybody thinks of him and he says what he wants without thinking , but that's what I love about him. He's different to most artists today , he has a special and unique personality that can make someone fall so in love with. He shows his emotion in songs and its almost like your reliving his last with him❤
It’s crazy how an acoustic performance can just give a totally new vibe to a song and give you a new understanding and appreciation of it. The emotion in Matty’s voice is so honest and real. It’s actually wild how Matty just completely puts his heart into every song he writes and how he (and the rest of the band) can make us feel that exact emotion when we listen. So grateful for their talent
This is how it starts You take your shoes off in the back of my van My shirt looks so good When it’s just hanging off your back She said "use your hands and my spare time" We’ve got one thing in common It’s this tongue of mine She said "she’s got a boyfriend anyway" There’s only minutes before I drop you off And all we seem to do is talk about sex She’s got a boyfriend anyway (x2) I love your friend when I saw his film He’s got a funny face but I like that ‘Cos he still looks cool She’s got a boyfriend anyway (x2) Now we’re on the bed in my room And I’m about to fill his shoes But you say no You say no Does he take care of you Or could I easily fill his shoes? But you say no You say no Now we’re just outside of town And you’re making your way down She’s got a boyfriend anyway (x2) I’m not trying to stop you, love But if we’re gonna do anything We might as well just fuck She’s got a boyfriend anyway (x2) You’ve got your tongue pierced anyway You in your high tops any day You in your skinny jeans anyway You and your fit friends anyway I’d take ‘em all out any day They all got back combs anyway You all got boyfriends anyway
Try to picture yourself wanting to have sex with someone that is in a relationship, and you want that guy to be your boyfriend, how would that make you feel?
Matty and Adam performed this at the private meet and greet I attended before one of their concerts. It was the most beautiful and surreal moment of my entire life. That moment will always mean so much to me. Always. They are such beautiful people and I'm starting to cry as I am typing this.. They are just amazing
best acoustic version of song. period. floaty, ghostly, reverb. black & white. perfect. plaintive vocal delivery, and even after watching countless other versions, I still buy it. I'll push this over 18k views by myself. can't stop coming back. thanks, Mah-ey.
How do 283 people dislike this?!? I could just sit in that room and listen to him sing this over and over again. That simile when he mentions her skinny jeans = heartbeat skipping!
i have literally listned to their album so many times now im listening to all their acoustic covers and its like a whole other album, much different meaning when its acoustic. cant wait for another song or album just more of the 1975 please
Matt Healy is a refreshing escape from the superficiality of modern music. His raw honesty is so powerful, and his humility is astounding when you consider his talent. It is musicians like him that inspire people to create beautiful music. I hope his message, that music made for one's self is the most worthwhile, is conveyed across our generation, and echoed for those to come. Don't change, Matt. We love you.
Never liked the 1975 much especially the lead singer but my friend showed me this and it changed my opinion completely. The emotion he puts across in his voice along with the sound of the guitar makes the song so different and gives the lyrics a whole different meaning. Incredible talent right there.
i've been listening exclusively to this for the last three days i'm not even joking if i don't pass an exam that i'm taking tomorrow it'll all be your fault, matty healy
This acoustic session just brings so much of a deeper meaning to the song. Really like it. I did a cover of this version on my channel, I'd love to know what you guys think! 💕
this band's songs either turns me on or makes me burst into tears. there is no middle ground for me.
+Luthien Soliven this is the most accurate thing I have ever read
this is too true
this one made me cry
If only I could understand a single word he says.. Swallow that potato first; play after!
Luthien Soliven D
Matty looks like he is about to burst into tears
He always does, though. I'd really like to know what's inside his head... He has the same look as one friend of mine that was depressed.
He recently said at a gig that he's much happier now. He's found love he says and he's less troubled by addiction.
@@EDDsp2009 pain. Its pain
The way he smiles when he sings "you in your skinny jeans, anyway" makes my heart break because I feel like he's actually remembering vividly her and her skinny jeans, kind of melancholic.
I thought exactly the same thing, after seeing this I can't help but feel he's in pain. This has got to be about an experience he's had.
So long ago this video was
So sad
The-Team-S
He has so much raw emotion. It's fantastic.
Raw emotion is like gold ore imperfect and flawed
Imperfect and flawed? Not really. Maybe in some ways but that's what makes it great. Perfection is unattainable; why go looking for it when you won't find it? Take heart in the small beautiful things.
No thanks
Many different ones.
I don't think I've ever seen him smile tbh
I love how he says "buoyfreend"...
smtel same here
omg yes
He sounds like a child... and a moron.
you know the feeling when you find out the meaning to a song and you just love it so much and your chest actually aches how dare u matty
every time I listen to The 1975 , it's sounds so New for me but I already listen it for 2 years , it's so weird because a band like the 1975 give me that feel, I dont know I just can't stop listen to it
Agreed 💕💕
+stef baay i feel you, same thing here dude.
+stef baay the accuracy of this
+stef baay same
+stef baay yeah that accuracy tho
when he sings about the skinny jeans and he smiles as if he can remember what this person looked like :'(
right
this was what I was thinking.. oh geez..
Kar Viera I never noticed that, how heartbreaking
Oh shit
J Wad just because he said it doesn't mean it's necessarily true
i think the acoustics he does are always way better than the original tbh
Agree 🙌🙌🙌
Same
ShaymaB6 everytime he sings his songs, it’s like a new version to me! He’s amazing!
The comment i was looking for...Totally feel you🖤
Except for robbers. The Acoustic version lacks the punch.
I just want to give him a hug
I would give all the money I have to sit in the same room as matty and just have him sing this over and over again.
same
He has these little smiles and then when he says "she's got a boyfriend anyway" it looks like he's about to cry. Really powerful song/performance.
i always find myself returning back to this video x
He has these little smiles and then when he says "she's got a boyfriend anyway" it looks like he's about to cry. Really powerful song/performance. I've listened to this 6 times in a row already.
I was just watching this and I glanced down at the comments and I was like Whoaaa, It's Jenn!
haha hey!!!! i listen to this at least once a day, not kidding lol

damn
What about that part "And I'm about to fill his shoes"? That doesn't go with your theory
Ingrid Schmidt actually i think it does.. he asks can he fill his shoes, ie can i be your boyfriend instead of him? but she said no. she just wants him for sex and is happier with her boyfriend.. in fact whether or not she actually has a boyfriend or not is irrelevant, she obviously doesn't see the narrator as boyfriend material, she's sees herself with someone else in the long term and he's sad about that...

amen!
every sex acoustic recorded sounds so sad like his face is so upset and i cri
evry tim
but you aren't literally crying are you? LIAR.
if you're not in love with matty healy after this then there's something wrong with you
I always come back to this performance of matty singing 'sex', because the way he furrows his eyebrows while singing, the way he puts so much emotion into his voice and just the way he makes the song come alive gives me goosebumps everywhere.

I adore The 1975, He breaks my heart
I always come back to the acoustics. This band is my home. Really.
I still cant believe just a few weeks ago I got the honour of seeing the 1975 and Matty live at a concert. It was amazingly beautiful.
My all time favourite song.. When I first heard it I thought that it literally was just a song about sex, but then I quickly realised that it actually has so much meaning and emotion behind it, and watching the acoustic versions just confirms that.. Beautiful.
His voice is perfect for this song.
Can someone please put Matty on a crystal box so nobody can hurt him? pls?
He hurts himself at this point. His coping skills arent the greatest. Poor guy.
Jerome Canafranca hes not a poor guy, hes actually an amazing person.
Agreed. He is amazing and very intelligent. He will be okay. But songs like this make me want to just give him a hug and wrap him in a blanket with tea.
he meant he felt sorry for him, not in a mean way
but if he didn't go through all of these emotions then we wouldnt have this sick music... hes taking one for the team really ;)
love how he puts so much emotion into everything.. always feels like he's pouring his heart out when singing acoustic songs
''BOIFREND'' the way he says boyfriend.
how do you say it 😂
+jv kk 😁 he just says it differently and it's so cute
+R. P. Neh ahahah, sounds pretty normal to me but you're right, matty can make anything sound cute
when your from the north it just sounds normal lol
BUYFRIEND.
This is my favourite version of the song. It's just so relatable for me, his tone, the lyrics, and the sound coming from his guitar. It's so melancholic and so much of a contrast of the album version. I'm glad I found this band.
that little barely noticable smile.
Be right back. Crying.

Matt is perfection no matter what anyone says ❤ when he sings I'm almost crying
this gives me chest pains
I think its cute he says "we might as well just..."
he only really says 'fuck' in the studio version, it's so cute.
It’s like he can’t bring himself to finish the sentence
A COUPLE YEARS AGO THIS WAS THE FIRST VIDEO I HAD EVER SEEN OF THE 1975 (or Matt Healy lol) AND NOW I'M IN LOVE WITH THEM
I don't know how anyone manages to be this vulnerable so often in their music.
I may be a huge Swiftie but my god I will never get tired of hearing this exact version of this song. ❤️
I love how matty looks here, so calm. idk
i melt every time i hear this and i'm a straight guy
I know alot of people don't like Matty because of the way that he doesn't care what anybody thinks of him and he says what he wants without thinking , but that's what I love about him. This is how it starts
You take your shoes off in the back of my van
My shirt looks so good
When it’s just hanging off your back
She said "use your hands and my spare time"
We’ve got one thing in common
It’s this tongue of mine
She said "she’s got a boyfriend anyway"
There’s only minutes before I drop you off
And all we seem to do is talk about sex
She’s got a boyfriend anyway (x2)
I love your friend when I saw his film
He’s got a funny face but I like that
‘Cos he still looks cool
She’s got a boyfriend anyway (x2)
Now we’re on the bed in my room
And I’m about to fill his shoes
But you say no
You say no
Does he take care of you
Or could I easily fill his shoes?
But you say no
You say no
Now we’re just outside of town
And you’re making your way down
She’s got a boyfriend anyway (x2)
I’m not trying to stop you, love
But if we’re gonna do anything
We might as well just fuck
She’s got a boyfriend anyway (x2)
You’ve got your tongue pierced anyway
You in your high tops any day
You in your skinny jeans anyway
You and your fit friends anyway
I’d take ‘em all out any day
They all got back combs anyway
You all got boyfriends anyway
So.You can repeat other peoples lyrics. What a fucking FLAKE ...
@Scott Adam I didn't know. And that's good lyrics are here
Impossible not to be in love with this wonderful, sensitive human being.
He looks so sad when he sings this song ):
Try to picture yourself wanting to have sex with someone that is in a relationship, and you want that guy to be your boyfriend, how would that make you feel?
I know how it feels lol. It was a simple observation, meaning no harm.
Leonardo Cerda omg pls do not own guns
Dang *****
for some odd reason, the fact that this comment is 3 years old makes me happy
for a strange reason I always come back here
as a lesbian I spiritually relate
Uno😂😂
sierragh as a bisexual girl with all straight girlfriends I relate too lol
saaaaaame
yes same here and I'm in love with a straight girl
me too
who would have known that falling in love with someone who LITERALLY cannot love you back the same way would hurt so much
he's got this unseen smile on his face for quite a while after he censors the "we might as well just ..." part
he's a cute lil baby angel
Smh
This is just so pure, not every band sings with this much emotion again and again
I always prefer the live versions over the others, because you can really feel the emotions behind the song.
Ikr!

this is absolutely beautiful.

I could listen to this version on repeat for hours. I love it so freaking much
i have literally listned to their album so many times now im listening to all their acoustic covers and its like a whole other album, much different meaning when its acoustic. cant wait for another song or album just more of the 1975 please
the feeling he put into this song and how he didn't curse just makes this so beautiful

he always looks so sad when he performs this acoustically PLEASE someone hug him

Can't believe this has been 7 years. Thanks for reminding youtube.
This is by far my favorite performance by them. I love this acoustic version.
looks like he's about to start bawling his eyes out...
Damn. Right in the feels.
"You said no "
kills me .
Best song of the 1975
I'm in love with it 😢
I have watched this an unhealthy amount of times
almost 4 years. time flies man...
It feels so real. It def comes from a raw place. Ugh I love matty
I just cried. This version of sex was the song that my best friend introduced me to the band with.
i've been listening exclusively to this for the last three days i'm not even joking if i don't pass an exam that i'm taking tomorrow it'll all be your fault, matty healy
The 1975 makes me feel like im in another world.
I feel like them and their music are my escape.
They make me feel home and ugh.
i come here every once in a while to feel something
This acoustic session just brings so much of a deeper meaning to the song. Really like it.
I did a cover of this version on my channel, I'd love to know what you guys think! 💕
I think the musical style of the album version contrasts beautifully with the lyrics.
she's got a boyfwend anyway
so cute tf
How can anybody not like this?
This is the best version of the song hands down
2019 and i still watch this everyday
This video holds so much emotional significance to me
The 1975 a band for a generation
How can this level of perfection even exist? ;(
